1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 19th of December 2007
Subject - Snow Globe

Snow Globe: Be careful! These things are fragile... one wrong slip and you'll have a big mess to clean up. Just give them a good shake, put them down... and stare off into a place of wonder. Snow globes are the bestest... aren't they? :)

Have Fun and Good Luck!

aaah very christmasy :D 90 minutes and a 2 week deadline.. hopefully see some really good entries for this from you guys, and a great starter to kick us off marty :)

working in retail this month is pretty much 10x the amount of work than a reguler month so I'm not gonna have much time, but I will see about fitting in time for an entry or two.

good luck everyone!

I've already got a few idea's that both involve Santa, the first using his enormous belly as the glass globe section, and another just having Santa's legs either side as he's been flattened by the globe :)

I've not modelled organically for over a month though and it shows!

Very nice starter, Marty.

I believe the hard part in this challenge will be the render. I had to render mine lots of times until I got an acceptable result.

Hope you like it, and good luck to everyone:)

Ummm... pavrix I don't think that is a Snow Globe. And your images need to be in a single image. Read the Directions very well... But it's a nice Ball.

hi!
b3ta, i really like your render. it´s looking awesome!!!
my glas keeps distorting the model inside. i need to find a way to correct this.
good luck to everyone else.
cheers

mr_lemon
08-12-2007, 09:39 PM
justus_jonas look at the index of refraction of your transparent material, maybe try to lower it,like 1 or so...a way to preview the distortion is to watch the sample of your shader and it's checkered pattern behind ,when the B/W squares doesn't distort anymore your glass is refracting the way you want,

and btw
Mimi01 i really like your image,if your not satisfied with your glass material you should try to add a thickness to the half-sphere or else it will look like a philm ball

See you soon guys

Okay, I'd like to post some comments...

Marty Looking back at your starter post - it's just struck me that you've managed to make a heck of a lot in the time - really liking the snoopy character - and your refraction is spot on - nice one :D

Aleg8r A nice entry, and a unique twist with the globe in a globe! - I can't tell if you have refraction on your glass - maybe this would help make the glass feel more substantial? - Nice wires btw - very clean.

mimi01 Lol - like the choice for your snowy scene - and a very nicely modeled palm tree :D - again, perhaps refraction could help the glass seem thicker - but overall I really like this one :D

slitcanvas Excellent idea - kinda wondered if Marty was trying to plant that idea subliminally! - Very ambitious for the time time limit - nice touch with the boat - we usually see things bolted down in snow globes - it's a refreshing change :D

seheng Very nice clean model and wires - the render side of things would maybe benefit from some bump mapping on the snow, and perhaps an hdri for reflections on the glass - but I see you have the refraction in there - nice work :D

Keylitho Excellent work! - Very very nice snow scene with all the trees - and superb glass - perhaps you could turn the hdr down a tad as its overpowering the logo on the front a bit - but overall an excellent model and render - great work :D

justus_jonas I hope you get your glass sorted soon - looking forward to seeing your entry :D

Well thats it for now - I don't think I missed anyone out - but sorry if I have :P

Keep the entries coming :D

I pop onto this website on a weekly basis too see what the contests are. Often times I want to try to do one, but I have no idea how to start it, or even how I could do it. But it looks like great practice so I finally convinced myself to try one and put my first entry in. I'm pretty new to modeling :P (been trying for quite a few months but have done very little of anything. Anyways, my jpg file was actually too large to show the entire thing so I had to break it up.

It's not nearly as good as some of the posts I've seen so far, and I can't texture or render worth a damn, but practice is practice. Worth saying that I'm really impressed with some of the renders I've seen so far. Lighting and rendering is something I just can't do yet.

RoboPencil
09-12-2007, 12:45 PM
And here's the wireframe, sorry if it's hard to make the wires out. I was trying to cram it into the photo.

b3ta
09-12-2007, 02:32 PM
RoboPenci Welcome to the forums :D - A nice solid model and not a bad effort at all for the render - I found this forum to be great practice and like everything you practice, you can only get better :D - So I say welome, and look forward to more entries from you!

oh btw - do you have Photoshop? - I think as it stands your entry would be classed as a disqualification split across two posts - If you have Photoshop and need to know how to composite the wire and save to a file size then we can advise you :D

macghost Yep, always nice to see others using Lightwave :D - If you ever want to share knowledge just drop me a pm :D - Looking forward to seeing an entry from you :D - Thanks for the comment

RoboPencil
09-12-2007, 08:07 PM
It's ok if it's a disqualification, I think I can safely say that it isn't a winner anyways. I'm here for the practice more than anything else. :P
Next time I'll have to use different methods to create my entry. I'll probably just crop everything. :)

d3m0ni0 Just checked out your website - I see you're the one responsible for the brilliant egg render! - really nice work :D

I guess you're right - I am enjoying the surfacing more and more - I used to only like to model, but as I do more 3d the surfacing is now what I am starting to focus on (although I still have some way to go!)

PAQUITO FPrime rules :P - I couldn't use Lightwave without it - the other week I made the mistake of upgrading my apple mac to Leopard - and FPrime didn't work! - I'm now back on Tiger :D

OK well here's my first entry, alot later than I wanted to submit this, but 'tis the season to be busy! :)

I wen't reletavily slowly with this one too as i'd got it worked out in my head how I wanted it to look a certain way, the Merry Christmas text was added in photoshop simply because I got lazy with trying to get my glass settings to refract the correct way without the text looking warped, i'll need to work on that for future entries.

There's some excellent entries coming in too guys, well done! :)

All relevant information is on the composite as always.

Materials and render setup: 1 hour
Render time: About 90 minutes (Vray)

Hey everyone, I'm new here and this is my very first post. Hope yall like the my snowglobe. Good luck to everyone and all great work so far.
I modelled everything in Max9 and then exported the fat guy on the spit to Mudbox1.0 to model it a bit quicker. I accidently exported him as triangles instead of quads and didn't want to waste time exporting and importing again so thats why it looks a little messy in the wireframe.(I'm only just got here and I'm making excuses already:roll:)

oh, and btw slitcanvas, that submarine entry is crazy XD I like the cartoon style, but since you've used only 55 minutes, I guess you could have made also a nice "ice" environment to go with... something like a hole in a ice platform and the submarine embedded in! Just my two cents :)

Been a while, hi everybody

Taking a break from studying for finals... So I decided to do some modellin'

Didn't read that the rules have changed, so I did it via old rules... oh well
Modelled in Autodesk Inventor 11 ~ 60min (including particle setup in max and fixing my internet radio)
Rendered in max+mr (it's not so great, but hey - I'm rusty)

This is my 50th speed modelling entry :)

i'm a little dissapointed that there's not been more

Classic Gamer

I would love to devote an hour or two a week to just 3D, but I really have way too many other commitments.
For those that don't know me, I work for a multinational computer company doing installations and tech support and once in a while I just have to get away from the computer. 40 + hours a week working on and with computers to pay the bills doesn't make me all that interested in doing modeling. Sometimes, I just have to unplug, though.
On the other hand, I really do enjoy modeling when I do get the time.
BTW, CG, when I do model, you are on of the few people that set the levels to which I attempt to achieve. Keep up the amazing work.

Hi guys,

there are some really nice entries for this one, also some really funny ones (the drowned santa or the lawine guy are hilarious).

Very inspiring... so I got an interesting idea too I really had to try, but down the road too much sacrifices were required, so not much is left from the original concept (which would have played a twist on the 'snow' part of the topic, by replacing it with cherry blossoms in some kind of japanese spring scene, now it's mutated into a Shurayukihime (Lady Snowblood) type of character, which I'm still happy with, though ).

In case someone is interested: the reference/ main inspiration pictures used: #1 (http://www.hobbystock.jp/item/view/goods_img/HBY-GCF-00000813.0.jpg), #2 (http://verleih.polyfilm.at/nippon_classics/lady-snowblood_06p.jpg) and #3 (http://www.nexsketch.com/japan/images/pictures/monk_10_25_05.jpg).

Some great entries here, it has inspired me to do some modelling, for the first time in about a year.

Decided to stick with something simple and I still barely managed to finish it in time, I'm really rusty :)

Anyway here it is. All created in Blender.

hi all. very very nice entries so far and a good topic.

when i scrolled through the entries here i got the idea with the snowman and the umbrella and decided to join the smc. then after modelling i stuck with my rendersettings and their results so i decided to end it up very fast and do some postwork in photoshop. will work and better renderings the next days.
hope you like it.

best wishes and a nice x-mas time to all of you!

MJslove, welcome to the forums and to the smc's!
First thing, to make it a valid entry, you'll have to include in the same image both render and wires, and if possible, the text containing the details of your entry (modeling time, render time, software, etc).
About the model, it's not so bad for a starter, and I think that would time you'll improve and learn to add more details within the time limit.
About the texturing and rendering, I don't have much time to talk about it right now, but I think that someone else will do.
Welcome again!
Ugga!

Actually... I'd have to admit that i am inspired... I am inspired by this forum and guys like you. This challenge really brings out the best in us and really adds speed in our improvement. I've been viewing all of your works here and your personal sites and I'm proud to say that I have admired everyones work. like your works Classic gamer, Kaisor and Daddydoom. Tnx man! Though I've been doodling with 3D for some years, just as a resource to graphic design and not 3D modeling itself, it was when I joined the forums that I really started taking chances on it (always for the good sake of fun and passion for this), and so far as been an ever learning experience.
I do not intend to be a pro at it, from the perspective of the game industry or the movies, it's really all about learning and sharing the evolution.

Well here's my 2nd entry, being nearly Chrimbo i've just not had the time to do much 3D other than paid CG :) So this is my 2nd and most likely last entry for this SMC. I'm a little dissapointed with the rendering and some elements of the modelling, but I took my time and didn't model very fast as we had the extended 90 min time limit.

The main reason this is a create your own style snow globe is partly because I didn't have the time to texture it and partly because it was losing too many details when I tried materials on the base mesh. All modelled in Cinema 4D, all other info on the composite.

I think it's a pretty cool idea CG. I miss some shadows in the render, namely the objects shadows on the table, it seems that they were imposed on the background. Apart from that, it's a cool idea :)

I know what you mean, maybe I should have used GI along with the 3 point light setup, the small paint cans do look super-imposed on the top.

If get chance i'll re-render it, but i've been so busy lately.

i hate mondays! hehe nice entry moondog_rsa, and superb entries from everyone, wish I had the time to crit each (

a very quick one from me, this one kinda evolved as I modelled, and even though I reached only 45 min I decided to finish it there (as I could only mess it up even more ;p) the basic idea started as a glass snow shaker in the shape of a christmas tree, I then decided to put that into a snow globe, to have a snow shaker inside a snow shaker... but not sure that worked too well lol. so here's a render with them seperate.

Lovely entry moondog. With that name you could have modeled Odie instead :D... or Snoopy lying on the roof of his house eheh :D
L3X, cool entry as well, love the glass!

Lovely entries, as usual ;) Inspiring stuff.

- Love your Garfield moondog ;) Although i really don't like de character itself eheh, CG very nice idea :)

Unfortunately my 1st entry won't be this time, last night while trying to make my "ship-in-a-snowglobe" (that was the idea ) my laptop started behaving weirdly, turned up to be a video memory problem :ugh: hopefuly tomorrow a Dell tech will be coming here to replace de defective gfx card. Alas, that gfx card was the reason I bought the whole damn thing

I'm sad

Well, I'm rendering with GI and HDRI skydome... That and the glass texture and water reflections and chrome... you know... it's taking ages :S
It's a simple piece, but the settings are quite heavy to render.

Beautiful entry there DaddyDoom, shame it's late though, the Titanic was RMS I think it that's the one you're referring to, a USS would reference the ship ship titanic game a few years ago.

for the few people that asked me to post my glass materials, terribly sorry for the delay on this one, i been very busy in the past days with work and with christmass comming up and stuff, i am sure you know how it goes.

ah well, here is the glass material, sorry if it's a bit messy, once again i am/was kinda in a rush, but i am sure with some common sense this can easily be figured out =).

once again, sorry for the delay on this.

i do have to add 1 last thing, i could easily be that this was a material i downloaded somewhere, or something of the sort, so if someone finds it just like this, or insanely similair, it's very well possible, so i am not claiming this material as my own, but i can't give proper credits either since i dunno where i got it anymore, or if i even got it somewhere at all =D.

ah well, less talk more images ? i agree, here it is.
