Low Poly Mini Contest #19

model by: Daniel Bullock concept by: James Hawkins
Subject – Creature Mount
ALL WIPS AND CONCEPTS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THIS THREAD.
Guide Lines:
Lets say you don’t have a car, or a plane or boat, but you do need to get somewhere far, far away. Lucky for you there is a creature of some sort right outside of your house and it’s just waiting to carry you and possibly anything you need to carry with you to wherever it is you need to be. The only problem is no one can see this creature but you. Help out the world by modeling what you see.
The best part about this comp, which is the same thing with all our competitions; there are no limits/restrictions to what you can’t think up. Go wild with this, have as much fun as you can with this. I only ask that you keep this comp crazy.
The specs for this competition are the same as the last (10,000 total tris), it may sound like a lot, but the idea is to keep you all ready for the up-coming Dominances War. We need to defend our championship. So consider this more training. You get about 5 weeks, so do not try and over do it. I want people to finish. So start now.
Above all,
Have Fun!
Judging: 3 categories of judging will apply. 10 points possible for each:
Concept - How well your idea fits the topic
Model – How well the geometry is structured, how well it looks like the subject.
Texture – How well the texture space has been used, and how well the texture is painted/applied.
DUE DATE: January 13th: a Sunday, 5 weeks and a few days from today! 11:59 pm GMT - SUNDAY
Idea:
Your mission if you choose to accept it, will be to show a ride-able creature of some sort. You can have a creature fused with machine parts, but try not to overdo it. Keep your creature, a creature.
Poly limit:
10,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 10,000 Tri Limit. Remember, the limit tells you where to stop, there is no minimum, so use as much of the limit as you see fit.
Textures:
(1) 2048 x 2048 texture. This means (1) 2048 for color, (1) 2048 for bump, (1) 2048 for normal, (1) 2048 opacity, so on and so forth. You can chop it up into whatever you want, but you still need to go all out in your texture.
Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.
Prizes:
Great range of products from 3DTotal shop:
-Digital Art Masters Book - Vol1
-Design Studio Press books
-texture CDs
-Shorts DVDs
-Lots of training DVDs
-12 month subscriptions to 3DCreative Magazine

2nd Place
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop as listed above
3rd Place
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop as listed above
Final Pictures:
Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):
- 1 x Winning pose shot. This image can only have "One" pose of your character. No multiple shots or different angles. Just one!
- 1 x Beauty shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you. Also add a picture of the character your redesigning. Like a before and after type thing.
- 1 x wire frame shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple wire frame shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you. Must have polycount included.
- 1 x texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.
- Concept Sheet (Only if you have a concept)
You must provide a screen grab of your wire frame with your poly count, with the actual model and all its parts selected. Please don’t Photoshop your Poly counter with a bogus count. Make sure you post all work in progress, including final poly counts and wire frames in the work in progress thread.
A Final Entry Thread will be up and waiting around the end of the third week/beginning of fourth week. Don’t forget to submit your work by posting it in the final thread.
Good luck everyone!

w00t!!!! I've been waiting for this post!
Alright I've been giving this one quite a bit of thought and here's my purdyful Concept! I have a good feeling about this and it's definitely going to be a challenge to be able to fit all of this thing's armor into the poly-count without making any of it look like a flat plane.
It's called a Vicredaunt (VIS-RAH-DON-T)
Comments and Criticism VERY welcome!

setschaos that was fast :haha:
i have question: is that shuld be land walking creature, or it can also fly/swim/crawl ... ?
setschaos
14-12-2007, 12:28 AM
Goust: I want to suggest that it's a natural grazer that uses its forearms like a giant sloth, but has four other limbs that when all used together creates a lot of speed. I figured that if he was going to be bulky, that there should be some way to make it so that the mount could be swift over a long duration as opposed to a bear (who's bulky but fast yet only over short distances)
I wanted to however, instead of making a fast and agile mount to make something like an elephant or rhino war mount, just to add flash.
Put a lot of thought into it ^_^ I'm pumped! lol
edit* Oh yeah, to answer your question: it's a crawling creature only

Here is the first Idea I have in mind right now, should probably pad him up a bit!
Some more ideas are floating in my minds on this topic right now, so this concept isnt the final one, just an idea to see If I'm on the right path ;)

14-12-2007, 11:01 AM
are we supposed to have a rider as well? or does only the mount count? and would he fall under the single 2048 texture space?
keenox
14-12-2007, 11:53 AM
i don't think so... it sais only to model the mount, not the rider... i guess you could make it, but it wouldn't count
BenniKImmel
14-12-2007, 11:58 AM
Hey Omni, the thread with the poll on it for the ideas, about halfway down, says that modeling a rider isnt necessarry, but if you want that you could.
omnicypher
14-12-2007, 12:46 PM
some update on the zbrush. i starting at the front and working my way back so im not so sure about the rear end yet. i think i will do a rider, as i want to show some scale with this beast. anytime you throw a human in, its easier to relate with and judge scale. but then again i could just use the saddle to judge scale.
omnicypher
14-12-2007, 12:48 PM
if you dont want to make a rider, you could always just throw a biped on there from max to show scale as well.

im not spending too much time on this one because i know it probably wont be the one i use. every time i enter one of these comps i get bored easily with my entries and move onto better ideas with what i learn from the first. ill go through at least 3 concept sculpts before i choose the one i use, then ill go through a few armor/saddle ideas and choose the best. if i have time ill make a person to ride it and maybe a weapon for that person. and maybe some saddlebag luggage/potions/sheild. plus they need a flag to represent where there from... this could easily get out of hand. if i want to experement with all these ideas, i need to make quick rough sculpts of each one. right now im not really liking the way my meshflow isnt showing enough geometry on the arms/legs, and with zbrush2 if i want to change that, i have to resculpt everything. i think im a bit faster when i throw concept to the wind and let the inner sculpture burst out, rather than try to tediously match details to a painting. heres where im at in max:
Quick question. Organic only? Or could it be a machine?
Mixed Metal and Meat is the way I'd like to go.

Quick question. Organic only? Or could it be a machine?
Mixed Metal and Meat is the way I'd like to go.
I asked about this in the poll topic, you're allowed to use metal, but it can't be entirely mechanical. So a mix would be fine, as long as it's a creature and not some sort of vehicle.
Here is my Concept:
Mathilda the Spider ^^
http://freenet-homepage.de/xxstyxx/contest03/concept/mathilda.png
Here's what I'm thinking of going with. Gonna do both mount and rider. Now I need to figure out a nifty harness and do some more work on the rider. Then on to modelling.
Good luck all!

nice idea, marv. i've thought of a giant, but i dropped the idea. i have a new idea... only a giant hand as a mount :D
i'd really use some oppinions, crits, comments and ideas... please people, a little help :dunno: ... i also thought of a giant hand as mount (as i said before) - i'll draw it later...
what would you choose between this 3 and the giant hand idea:
108637
108638
108639
omnicypher
14-12-2007, 06:44 PM
keenox: i like the 2nd idea, the first and last would be hard to ride. the third one isnt a bad concept as it is original, but if you acctually animated it, it would either be a really slow and boring way to travel, or a fast and bumpy ride. giant hand sounds cool though
Fenixy
14-12-2007, 07:00 PM
keenox: like omnicypher alredy said the second one, or third with legs of second
styx: funny ^_^ why all hates bunnys so much

im still liking my first character, but im moving on for now. i might come back and polish it up a bit. my next one will be some kind of wolf with wings, but bigger than last time. my first was leathery on the skin and saddle, my next will be furry, and last will be more mechanized i guess. in the end i might mix and blend a few into one. if i can keep up the speed i did this morning everyday, ill have an army by the end of the month.
Ok, the final Concept:
http://freenet-homepage.de/xxstyxx/contest03/concept/concept.png
@keenox
I like the Third but ist realy hard to animate (like omnicypher says)
@Goust
In the past i used Cats (cat looks in a gun, cat sit in a cannon) and the most People scream "oh no, the sweet cats. how can you do this??". No Joke. ^^
omnicypher
14-12-2007, 07:36 PM
heres a good example at why i like skipping the concept phase for random beasts. i started making a wolf, and now i think im going lion with this one.
Keenox Would go for the second one. The third one looks like its gonna give you a real bumpy ride :)

14-12-2007, 08:06 PM
thanks everyone for the suggestions, i'll draw the giant hand(i also have a little story for it) and post it.
styx why do you hate rabbits and cats so much? they are innocent animals...
omnicypher i don't want it to sound offending, but i think the first one works better. the last one looks more like a bear with wings. i noticed something about your animal anatomy: you make it look more like human anatomy. animals have some differences in musculature and shapes.
omnicypher
14-12-2007, 09:04 PM
i feel using human anatomy for a fantasy animal is a good idea. it always seems more barbaric and its alot easier to convey size and strength. if i choose this concept, i will probably find another way to make wings with more detail and less waste. im going to hold off until after my third concept before i decide which i like best.

Thats a great idea. But of course the two animals/creatures would share the tri count and texture space.

That's what I expected.
Did a quick doodle for a single creature. The general shape I like, but the limbs need a lot more work; they look boring atm.

Platypus_green: Nice :)
Here is an update, did a quick ZBrush ZSphere scuplt for basic proportioins and such, brough in Maya at 60k so I can use that to start Making my polymesh for the sculpting;)
After adding a few horns, claws and WingMembranes, here is what I have! Almost ready to start modeling the base scuplting mesh :)

EvilKinght: Maybe the back legs could be beefed up a bit more on the winged creature, unless it was incredibly light I think it would struggle to support itself when it lands. It is looking very promising though.

14-12-2007, 11:00 PM
Marv: A giant, yes! Hrm, hrm, hrm...
Goust: Neat, now go make it with the same quality of your last entry :) .
Styx: A spider huh? Cool, it'd be sweet if it was a wolf spider (jumping yey!) Personnally I don't like that bait on a fish stick thing. I've seen it done several times and it's starting to get kinda cheezy.
PG: Interesting design with the face (reminds me of a dog). It looks kinda plain at the moment though but I know your probably gonna go back and add some stuff to it. It'd be nice to see some kinda cool looking harness (like that sexy one on the snail thing on the front page) and some random travel bags and what not.
EvilKnight: Model is coming along nicely. I still think you should bulk it up, main due to the large head.
BigToe: I'm interested to see what you come up with. With your entries for the past couple of contests, one can only wonder ;) .
I might do some doddles pretty soon after I finish a couple of minor side projects.

i finished normal mapping 2 of my concept characters , saved the file in max, and when i reopened it, it says "error loading biped" then "invalid file: only partially loaded" then "file open failed". all that work thrown out due to a stupid, unnessasary biped. luckily not all my eggs were in one basket and i still have all the .obj and normals. but i lost my whole step by step process for making the first creature. i was going to make an animated gif of it too :( oh well, the sculpting is where the magic is anyway.
styx why do you hate rabbits and cats so much? they are innocent animals...
I dont "hate" kittys or bunnys, i love them with ketchup XD
Nooooo, just a Joke ; )
But i love Post Apocalyptic Themes/Stils and in such a World Rabbits, Cats, Dogs and Rats the most Animals (i think). So this Animals are the best Choise (i hope the word is correct) of Source of Food. ^^

I know what you mean. But its a little Thing and if i dont like it at the End, i can let it away.

15-12-2007, 01:06 AM
omnicypher, i think you should stick to lower subD levels until you get the basic shape down. it looks like you're sculpting like crazy and just throwing blobs of detail on there, with little underlying structure. all in all it's very unreadable, especially the faces.

There can never be too many of one kind :)
Couldn't resist. Here's my concept. It's a beetle-esque creature that runs on two pairs of legs instead of six. The last pair has evolved into a pair of small scythes nestled between the large front arms. The ruins on the creature are natural growths.

Well...I don't know what I'll call it...Sort of Owl meets 3 legged elephant. I imagine it bounds into the air using it's powerful hind leg and then glides back to earth.
I'm not sure If I'll stick with the gyroscope combat seat or build a regal oriental style seat. I'm at 4802 tris right now...so lots of room to add stuff still.

defaultalias: these are just sketches, and ill spend the first 2 possibly 3 days making them, pick my favorite, then model it for real. seeing as how i am going for speed sculpting rather than precision, the original low poly was just a tweaked divided box with a couple of extrusions. im liking the major proportions of the models i made and overall i think the next one or two will be in the same cartoony, RPG style as well. this is all just an experement in my concept workflow, seeing if i can make a sculpt just as fast as i could sketch, but with more detail, and seeing how that would help/hurt my current pipeline. after last competition, i have been doing a few studies on edgeflow and making things subdivide better. my current theory is, alot of people are against triangles because they dont understand where they should and shouldnt go. i think a triangle in the right place or places could make certain meshflows better, and i will do a few more experements during this comp to show what i mean, once i have my concept down. only towards the end of the comp will i know if this workflow is a keeper. either way it should help fill up my portfolio, as i will likely go back and finish up each of these.

Hey Keenox, love the idea but I got a question. Where does the black magic come into play? I see how the mechanics help the hands, just not the magic.

omnicypher thanks! i think i'm gonna use some dark greenish grey, add some veins and make some thicker, rougher fingers. hope it will come out as expected and finish on time :D
BenniKImmel i think the magic keeps the hand from rotting and controls the hand "wireless" :haha:. i dunno, you can think of another story.. it's fantasy after all :)

i started sculpting a turtle with a jet sticking out of his shell. then i realized the sky chase zone from sonic 2 had a similar mount, so i might ditch the rocket idea and just go for a walking turtle with a pagoda on his back. i might make it a large pagoda castle and show the scale of this beast.

lythtis - as far as i know ZBush3 the normal mapper doe's not work you have to get the 3.1 update which is free the update includes a lot of good changes, but most importantly it includes Zmapper which creates normal maps for you.

Here is my update, this is the base mesh for sculpting in ZBrush, really not a real time mesh yet, but I'm gonna use this mesh to start sculpting good details in ZB3.1 and I will then bring the new one, and retopo for the low res, and use XNormlas for the Normals extraction ;)

Well, I'm going to toss my hand in on this one, sounds like a fun concept..and lurking around here is just too boring :D.
With all the tough competition I've seen so far, I hope I can at least get a good showing in here :D.
I'm horrible with concept art, but I'll see if I can do some stick figures before I jump on modelling.
@VersionThirst: one comment about your idea the saddle setup is great but what happens when the creature lowers it's tail..wouldn't that effectively dismount the rider? I'd think about putting something under the seat to compensate for that possibility :???:

keenox: thats a good looking hand, if you were to add more tris, i would say the knuckles would be a good place to define some more, maybe just throw one more edgeloop around them, and the palm side of the thumb has a wierd pole that might mess things up for animation or sculpting. also the last joint in each finger could be sized down a bit. its a little easier to tweak fingers if each joint is bent a little and the thumb is pointing down, as if grabbing a soda can.

Awesome idea Omni- I'm a huge fan of Sonic 2.
Sorry I've been off the radar for a while. Busy Schedule and all (Starting two businesses, looking for a job, and finals week is finally over).
Here's a WIP from my mount. It's kind of like a rabbit with massively long legs. I'm using an old ZB3->Max->ZB3 work flow. I've made a messy base mesh in ZB, which is then re-meshed in 3dsMax. UVWs are applied in Max and then it is detailed in ZB3 again for the final product. Hope I can finish this one!

Keenox: If you want to render out your wire-frame, use the move tool and clone your whole model without moving it, then add a push modifier to your cloned object. Open your material box and create a new material with the wire-frame option applied. Then you've got your nice rendered out wire-frame model. (This is all using MAX that is)

I have been slacking for the past year now and I want to learn more and improve my skills so I desided to try and join each comp, from now on in order to learn a lot because my school fails in that part.
Early stage concept but it will give you the general idea:
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4236/mountconceptcopyvs3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Story behind it:
I play world of warcraft and in that game they have some player versus player stuff called arena. An Arena season lasts... a season, which is 4 months. If you end in the top 0,5% of your battlegroup ( combined servers that fight each other in the arena's) you get rewarded with a Gladiator title and an Armored Netherdrake.
I was one of those top 0,5% and should have recieved it. But they screwed up and now after 3 weeks of "investigating" I still haven't recieved it.
So I thats how I came up with the idea for a mount for this contest. I hope I can make it look sweet. I am going to improve the concept tomorrow or so.
btw, I like what I'm already seeing here. Good luck to everyone.

a little update with hoses and tower(saddle).:smug:
do you think i should add more sides to the hoses (they have only 4)?
i want to make the fingers a little bulkier, more ogrish.
the tri count is 2024:
108903108904
108905108906
108907

those "ngons" are polygons resulted from cutting edges. i have a little question: is 'paint deformation' in max similar to mudbox? i have never used mudbox.:o
btw MiyamotoMusachi, pretty cool rhino!

Keenox: Great idea and work so far, if your looking for a couple of places to add polygons, try this idea: Add a bulge near the end to simulate some sore of place for all the components to work the tendons to be, I think it would be great detail to add in (I even colored it for you :P ) The color scheme might not be what you were looking for...

ok iv been busy modelling and have got a half decent looking turtle so far, im not happy with the geo on the shell it smooths good but it might not manipulate how i want it to when it comes to the high poly version so i think i will be tweaking that, im happy with the basic form of the model but it still needs lots of tweaks, heres a wireframe any criticism would be awesome :D

yuriyxxx: is the tricount with the smooth on or off? In the end, you will want to make sure the smooth is off.

yeah it doesnt seem to be as widely used as my teachers seem to think it is...

Hello Everyone,
I decided to share with you what I've been thinking so far,
I'm trying to put some philosophy to the concept!
I have some sort of house however don't have a transportation equipment or device that will travel me off ... hmmmm ... It should be friendly easy to treat, fast and powerful to travel long distances easily.
thats my concept I hope you like it
and best regards to all participants in this challenge :haha:

i threw on a few quick rough textures without even unwrapping, added a few lights and im at 9600 tris. i think im going to make less dense pagodas for the final piece. im also not sure about the red roofs, i might make them blue or green, but that might take some of the contrast out. so far im going for jade chains, but i might try other materials. i was also thinking about adding chinese lamps for extra lighting, and possibly a bridge to the head. and a better island couldnt hurt the scene.

This is just a concept and will probably have several revisions of this first sketch before I’m done.. I'm still very new to 3D modeling but like this site and think it's great to have somewhere to go for encouraging this skill set.
I do have a question in regards to process.. I've read then watched some videos that differ in steps to a finished model.
Some say to model, texture, bone and skin then animate
others say to model, bone, skin then texture and animate. If I remember right that was how it was taught.
Is this a preference or is there a rule?

Wow this is shaping up to be a big one. Great work so far everyone. Trying to get work in with holidays and school ending has been tough, but hopefully I'll get this comp. done.
I was thinking that my mount would be a minotaur with rider on top. Yep pretty simple. I have not finished doing his armor, and rider saddle.
Good Luck to all, I'll have updates in 2008

LOL, thanks BiG ToE-3DT- I went little over as I was adding the saddle. Now I need to go back and rethink where to cut.
Thanks for saving me time:)
BiG ToE-3DT Question: reading all post I noticed a central rule which is not to apply any sort of smooth, weather in nurms subdivisions and/or modifiers of any sort. Am I right?

yuriyxxx,
I was tracking your work right from the beginning :o,
I think you have done a very very good job so far,:haha: however, after adding the detail in ZB and coloring your character !? I think you move in a different direction.
I'm not trying to be negative! I thought your concept would be the winner concept among the art works available, really :shy:
But, because your work is a mix between Final fantasy work & reality work, adding details is really hard job to do. I admit it.
What I'm trying to say here, tray to move in a different direction.

more realistic (more of details) would be more fun in this stage.
more fantasy (more textures & creazy addons, complexity I mean).

okay. so this is my first time EVER entering a piece in a contest. i started on my model somewhere around 10 a.m. today, and just finished the base model.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/Oniram/models/02.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/Oniram/models/01.jpg
unfortunately, i cannot smooth out the model without it being less than 10,000 tris (the model with turbosmooth actually ends up being about 18,000). so it looks like ill have to do with what ive got, and just touch up a bit to get the silouhette looking right.
tell me what you all think.
and i was a few minutes shy when posting this, but now its a decent enough time for my message:

Oniram - Are you famillare at all with normal mapping? because you can just use the model you have now as the base and then crank up the smoothing and cut in some insane details and map that onto your low poly
Oniram
25-12-2007, 12:28 PM
i am familiar with it, however i am not that efficient with it. i have zbrush 3.1 on my computer but i can barely understand the UI well enough to make decent details. im learning though.

Oniram - An easier program to use for normal mapping is mudbox, im not sure which software you use but the mudbox interface is like maya, its alot more simplier then z brush also so you should alot more success using it, pretty much all you do is load in your mesh, subdivide it and start painting your details, you have to remember to uv map your low poly model before you export your normal maps or they will be all srambled up
