FINALLY, our school's CAD lab got a copy of 3ds 5, so i've been playing around with it. Unfortunately, the lighting tutorials are sadly inadequate. I want to learn how to use the new lighting features. Are there any tutorials on using the new lights on line? I looked on 3d total and couldn't find much.

thanks

You already did the 2 advanced lighting tuts that came with max, right? I agree there could have been a couple more tuts, at least two for each one. I thought the gallery\radiosity one was pretty good though.

I don't know of any tuts for radiosity or light tracer, so I can't help you there, sorry.

I guess GI really depends on the scene and what's going on in it.

Do you know what type of effect you want? Like the color bleeding, or the softer shadows. A good test for the color bleed is a red ball in a white room. Or do you want the room lit by one light source effect?
Or are you more interested in the IES lights? Those need the scene to be in the right proportions to the light type.

yeah, i just found the intro to lighting. guess i should have looked there first :P

Well, i tired messing around with the sample scene, and my computer hosed up, so i haven't tried since. I am trying to make a scene with illuminating tubes (kinda like the neon in one of the tuts, but not really...

Anywho, i need to see if i can get a book for cheap on 3ds 5. I have on on 3ds 3 and 4, but those don't really help anymore.

I guess u r looking at radiosity there. Just go through the max 5 tutorial on radiosity. There is a tutorial (an interior scene at that too, so I guess ur lucky) on lighting with neon lights!!! It comes under the radiosity section.
