Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first.

Here we go with this month's challenge, which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive, whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine.

This month we have chosen DRAGONS! Grrrr!

This challenge is awesome,
First off I thought what would be considered an abstract dragon, cause there are loads of dragons that are eating people or used by scantily clad women or big men with swords as mounts etc... So i thought what if dragons aren't all giant, what if they were tiny, like fingernail small, so i played around with that idea. I figured to show the size it would need to be on an object that gave the viewer perspective, eg a hand. I couldnt be bothered with modeling a hand so I thought some more and this is what I came up with:
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/5530/layoutyu1.jpg

a dragon the size of a butterfly with butterfly wings!
so I started modeling it tonight and this is what I have come up with so far:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/8786/test06tt0.jpg
http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/6146/test07sy2.jpg

The basic shape of the dragon I have used the nether drake from world of warcraft to give me a rough idea but i will be changing a lot of it later, i just really wanted to render off a picture with butterfly wings.

MunkyButt> you're making me thinking 'oh yes....why??' ;)
BTW Good start so far, what software is used? are you going to model the wings as well as the body?

Good start and good luck!

Hey! I'm new to these forums! I keep seeing the amazing work produced in these competitions, and i'd like to have a go myself. Here's my entry so far... unusually for me i didn't do much concept art beforehand - i just dived straight into modelling. Which might explain why im not completely happy with the model so far... I probably need to go back to the concept stage in order to get a better idea of what i want to achieve. What do you think? Great entries so far as well!

Lynette-3dt: Thank you very much for another wonderful competition
Munkybutt: I can't wait for the final image, very different concept - cool!
Noviski: Very nice concept and indeed very fast, and quality modelling.
grafixsuz: Very funny concept and nice sketches... I'm eager to see the models now
penguins: Nice sketches, hoping to see more updates
DaddyDoom: I do hope you could still find time to join. I'm really looking forward for your works ( and also CG too and everyone else )
stiderotte: Very cute
bjzaba: Funny, Cute and fast...Welcome to the forums
Hoping i did not miss anybody. Great entries and concepts so far

Hi guys, This will be my first time here (I did'nt make it the last time due to health problems), Hopefully, I can finish in time. Started modelling the body to the tail. The rest will follow soon. sorry if I haven't been able to post the concept sketch just yet because my desktop pc (where most of the files i'm using was) is currently "offline":wall: but anytime soon I will be posting the sketch. Oh! by the way my concept is a tie between a young dragon and a robot, more of an "Astroboy" like thingy but more of a cyborg (co'z astro's pure bot). So, about 1/3 of the model will be inorganic but I will finish the dragon model first before I add on the "parts". The title of my entry will be "CYD" the young cyborg dragon (CY=cyborg + D=dragon). I really liked everyones work and concept here so good luck to everyone and God bless.

Tnx for the motivation Nocturn8 :) I'm currently working on a small personal project, just for the sake of fun and learning (take a look at the Inorganic Projects section, the BugZapper Robot thread and tell me what you think). That's why I will not be able to join this one.
That's a nice start-up you have there. Curious to see where that leads too :D

Thank you all for comments. Sorry about the huge post.:lame:

@TonyClifton: Você é brasileiro? Que surpresa boa! O que anda fazendo em Portugal, cara! Eu nasci em Curitiba, moro no bairro Cajuru. Abraço pra você e nossos irmãos tugas. ;)

@grafixsuz: Thank you. I like modeling using Carrara, it's a great tool IMHO and I think that's help the fast work. Maybe I'll try the Speed Modeling Challege next time.:smug:

@DaddyDoom: I agree with Nocturn8, hope you can participate with your great work at this one. Allways inspiring the forum's users. Ugga! ;)

@Nocturn8: Thanks for comments, and welcome to the party! Nice idea the CYD, can't wait to see it.

Really nice sketches and ideas, penguins, stiderotte and bzjaba. Good luck!

I finished the body. A little regret about the spine, "soooo many spikes versus lazy guy" but I made it, using the extrude method. The head I'll try something different. The poly by poly modeling technique, using background image as reference:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip030a.jpg

After joining the parts, duplicating with symmetry and weld the points, I create the horns using the Extrusion:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip035a.jpg

The tongue is a cylinder primitive, adjusted as the reference background image. The bifurcated point of the tongue was made by extrusion method too:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip038a.jpg

Now the teeth. Duplicating and rotating one of the horns, I made the upper row, duplicate it and made the lower teeth. Extruding the back of the tooth I create the molar teeth:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip047a.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip049a.jpg

Now, the head is adjusted to the body. A quick render:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip053a.jpg

Defining the shading domain of the head. I'm using a nice feature of Carrara, the Layers List for shading. Very easy and fast. Here's the basic:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip054a.jpg

Another pose tests. Looks decent:

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip056.jpg

The next step are the wings.

Thank you all, guys! Cheers!

Here's the rough sketch... Sorry for the quality, scanner problems.. had to use a digital camera to be able to upload the sketch early. Just as usual, might change the overall appearance. (It's quite fun and better to find the best camera angle in 3d). might also change a few details such as the robot parts. etc. I'm still figuring out the best facial details.. I wanted CYD to look like he's full of pride and aggressiveness, but i might still change my mind.:???: it all depends... hope y'all like it Oh and Noviski you're really good!!!!!

Thanks, DaddyDoom. I allways work with cartoon, drawing 2D things without care with proportions, flat aspect of characters, etc. But after work with 3D I've been more careful with my jobs. And those contests are a great opportunitty to try it, the translation of the 2D to 3D is a good exercise. And, if you like the results so far, I'm happy. Muito Obrigado! ;)

Thanks, Nocturn8, nice sketch! Don't worry about the scan quality, CYD looks very nice indeed.

Hi, GARBO X! I'm very happy and proud with your comments - and vote :smug: -, thank you so much! I agree about the wings, thanks for the tip.

Thanks, lythis, your model style looks very cool, I can't wait to see the progress. Good job!

Well, the up of the day. I've been very busy today, but I found some time to play with Carrara and model the Barbarian's head. Using a background image as reference too, starting with a cylinder primitive:
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee104/noviski/Challenge/dragon_wip070a.jpg

The helmet is a sphere, builded on the Vertex Modeler. The horns are extruded and deformed cylinders too. A render test, with the basic shaders:

I'm going to take a shot at modeling a stylized Chinese dragon. According to www.wikipedia.com, Chinese dragons are a combination of "The horns of a deer. The head of a camel. A demon's eyes. The neck of a snake. A tortoise's viscera. A hawk's claws. The palms of a tiger. and A cow's ears."

Still trying to figure out how I should do the mane of fur, but here's what I've got so far. crits welcome...

cmarcus - liking the sketch. i can see him in a dragon's lair game chasing after dirk.
cyll - sweet embryo looking thing. from what i see, the poly count looks very high. still a good start.
noviski - from concept to final is amazing. i agree with others, ur work flow is quick.
ianchaos & munkybutt - looking nice. both are unique and non traditional looking ( well at least to me anyway) cant wait to see more.
lionfox - all i have to say is " AWWWW so cute"

my update: i was wondering which way should i go model 1 or model 2. i am leaning more towards 1. the differences are basicly the front hands. one can walk on hind legs and hold stuff the other walks on all 4.

cmarcus: Nice sketch, will wait for the model.:)
Cyll: A totally different concept, i like it
lythtis: that dragon's looking cool already, 1 vote for 1 here!
ianchaos: awesome research work, looking forward for more updates
Munkybutt: Nice progress, i think you should model the wings instead of just using the textures for a much better look.;)
stiderotte: The first sketch was already good. and now, a whole lot better. though i think you should make the face a little younger.;)\
LionFox: Nice concept
Noviski: Boy, that was fast and like I said before, the quality remains. simply amazing and how i wish i could have the same workflow. Very Nice job dude;) about the light, i think the shadows beneath the dragon are going the wrong way(towards the source of light).Hope that helps!

Here's a few updates,
Never followed my previous plan of modelling the whole body first before adding the mecha parts for a much faster worflow and to be able to meet the deadline. Worked out a few body details and started the mecha leg parts(had to figure out how the mechanism should function for a leg. Next will be the arms and hopefully finish the head sketches for background reference (if not, might proceed to the wings first and extra details) Then I will try to make the scene funny and cute(Oh man, that's gonna be hard). Had a little render problems on the image due to light and render setup. Anyway, Hope you guys like it.

@Nocturn8: Very nice modeling. I like the details, good work!

@grafixsuz, your dragon is just amazing! A very charismatic character! You have my vote on this one!

Guys, I think is finished. I change the dragon texture skin and rebuild the lighting like suggested by Nocturn8. Also correct a wrong joint of the right back leg. Tell me what do you think:

Hi,

@Grafixsuz Your dragon looks so kind, like it could be a pet, which could bring me to my work, haha! Great modeling! Hopefully the texturing will be as good as your modeling!

@Noviski Like said before, looks great. One point of critic: the flames coming out of hit mouth are to yellow in contrast with the background. It looks like they flow away in the sunlight. Maybe you could give them a bright red color which is in contrast to the background as the dragon self... just an idea.

This is just a WIP from my dragon. I'm not that good at moddeling, first time working from concept through mesh by polymodeling. And because i haven't learned yet how to rig i have to model everything in the right position and shape (like it's tail)
Let me know what you think or what which really need some attention!

Greetings, LionFox.

grafixsuz I think that your dragon's winds need to be fixed.

Noviski Great work I am sad because now you have finish your dragon and dragon rider and I must wait until the next challenge to see your wips and final image.

LionFox Don't worry about your dragon it seems very cute and I don't think that you have to rig it, and keep 4side faces for better smooth.

I can't think of something funny with a dragon right now but I will let all of you know when I will start the modeling.

noviski_i think it is a little too much of yellow light now...
grafixsuz_your model turned out really good, nice character!
lionfox_stick with it, may be do some more detail in the lower level, before using a modifier, and do like garbo said and keep four-sided polys

lionfox: Looking pretty good, waiting for updates

@ nocturn8 : nice work m8, good texturing, will be cool to see the whole thing once its done ! and btw its zbrush im using :)
@ TonyClifton : Looking forward to seeing it put in a 3D env and how it goes ! good luck !

and heres a litle bitt of a update, aint much, since i havent had so much time, but anyhow,

cyll_that is crazy detailing! great! what happened to him? was he burnt or is this his normal skin?

nocturn8_the contrast between machine and animal(dragon) is working well, the textures will help showing that! cool concept!

@ nocturn8 : ahha :) its not that much actually, but lets hope it makes it into the final render, i think the whole mesh was att 12 mil poly , 100 000 in maya at most i think, aint exact :)
@ penguins : thx m8 , i cant wait to texture it... "not" XD
Tony Clifton : thanks, well its more of a hybrid that never made it into the final state, so i guess its a bitt hard to say what happend to him, other than mutations, and skin deterioration, :)

and heres a lil update, wont be working on it till wednesday because of some school project with a photorealistic car instead.. but after that, i guess its going to be textured in a week and im done :) ! hopefully :D

neway Wings grew :O

"crazy detailing"? ... hmm, dont't know, but the skin structure looks quite random to me. And btw. a dragon without wings is NOT a dragon imho ;)

Cyll
13-01-2008, 09:10 PM
well since i used only 3 brushes, i dont know about random since its the way i wanted it to look :) and still yett u try to say that a dragon whitout wings aint a dragon :) thats a bit of a shame since i guess u havent seen the chinese dragons since the dragons originaly come from the chinese "fantasy" and myths:) ? and then we have the other types of dragons that are land walkers :) artworks abbout them everywhere, not to be a pain in the ass that is, :) and i can even remember them in the heroes of might and magic games. altho there was only 1 , and that was the cristal dragon, but i think we have another now in homm 5 :)

penguins: thanks, i'm using 3dsmax 9 on modelling and photoshop for making the textures. nice update going on there.
TonyClifton: thank you very much, i'm learning a lot from the forums because of you guys. (eager to see your model:))
Cyll: 12 mil polys and only 3 brushes in zbrush............man, that's cool. nice wings growing.

finally got an idea to make the scene slightly funny, Had to change the title to CYD the DRAGon Racer. 2fast 2 furious racing style put into a futuristic dragons setting. So the actual racing machine and the driver is actually the dragons themselves. The scene i am planning will be something like an upgrade (dragon) garage, wherein i'm going to put some nitrous oxide tank in CYD plus Neon lights and Speakers. Hope to post updates soon. Hope you like the idea for now! good luck to all.

since i got to carried away with the thing, and im such a tard and cant keep away from it :p i satt and put down a test of it textured in a organic matter :) 2 tests, and the second whiter one aint copletly fixed(head texture was missing but there are details that can be seeen kinda good :) ) but thats for the later things :) and i think il redo the chalange for this, next week, but atm heres what ive got from this first alien type of creature :) aint gonna be a dragon nomore i think its getting sure to say :)
and wings collor isnt normal , i had a other texture for it, but well as the head texture ( and my head ) it got lost in the render or something

nice entries here, particularly ianchaos, i like a lot your model man, hope we can see more posts in the next days... nocturn8, let us see the upper part of your dragon!!! looks cool, noviski, this color scheme looks a lot better, the modelling, sketch, rig, pos and translate is excellent!! maybe another texture on the ground, this seems kinda lowres & his rightback leg seems planted on ground already... not a big deal ... :-), great work man..

GARBO X - the hair and the hair ties were done in Maya. The main body shape of the dragon was modeled in Maya and I've been making the finer body adjustments in Mudbox.

stroggtank - I love your dragon concept drawing. if your model looks anything like that I'm guessing you've got another winner.

Noviski - much better contrast with that background. I can't believe how fast you can develop such a great looking scene...It makes me laugh every time I see it....great work.

Stiderotte: Nice follow up to an already strong sketch.

I think that, as long it looks like a dragon and not like a pig or a chicken, you can stylize it as you like. There are certain elements that make a dragon look like a dragon, and since you use them, it's ok.

My problem with the logging into the forum is finally solved, many thanks to Lynette and Chris for that.
So, hello to everybody around here and I`m in for this nice little challenge.
It`s still a very early WIP, some sort of a sketch. Unfortunately I don`t have the time to draw the concept/sketches by hand therefore I model them directly in Zbrush. It`s fast enough, it gives a better preview of what the final image will be and I will use some of the parts in the final render (after some tweaking, retopo, whatever it takes).

It`s supposed to be funny and stylized, I hope my "Crusader Dragon" will fit those requirements. The idea is that Europe sent pretty much all it could send into the "holy" crusades, including children. I thought about what could they use after all the human resources are finished. What was easy to find everywhere in medieval Europe: dragons! With promises and more promises why wouldn`t they be willing to fight the heretics and infidels and gain glory and gold?

aby arty
26-01-2008, 08:01 AM
oh no silvacticus posted the style before me
now what should i do ?
i hope i can continue on with my modelling as i am half way under and dont have time to start from scratch .
ill just try to make it way different from silvacticus

way to go silvacticus, ur lizardman warrior is great.

u prefer them bigger? I kinda dont get the crit though..a lizard is ok but the one with horns and wings(wich i think are important to get a dragonish creature) isnt a dragon to ya XD. ill take a look at the wings.

DaddyDoom
26-01-2008, 08:50 AM
Big asian island lizards are called Komodo Dragons. One of the various interpretations of dragons is in fact a big lizard with wings, horns and fire spitting.
Stick to it mies, it's cool :)

aby arty
26-01-2008, 02:59 PM
mies :ya make them a lttle bigger , i think that should do the trick .

mies
26-01-2008, 04:56 PM
i know they named comodo dragons ^^. in dutch its called a comodo varaan. so in dutch they are not dragons but sure just fooling with ya =). the reason i kept the wings small is that i want to get a cute effect on the little fellow. And small wings and small arms help with that. together with the big head and and small knees it will get that look i hope. i did how ever change the wings alittle and ill post my current state in a bit. I hope u like the new shapes better. =)

A very nice little character you've got there, mies!
I prefer the smaller-wings-version.

ya mies u were right ,the big wing version looks like the original's elder brother.
maybe its resembelence to pteradactyl(flying dino) is because of somethinng else , but over all this piece of urs has good chances of winning .

by the way are u going to stylize it more or its done?

.KaisoR : whoohooo some1 that agrees with meh :P thnx

aby arty : i was stil working on textures. i tried alot of diferent stiles to get a more scale like feeling to it but didnt got one i liked, so im still working on that and im always open for sugestions. i would love to hear some crazy idea's to stylelize it some more =) i myself was thinking its pretty much the texturing for now and that the mesh is done but who knows =)

thnx for the kind words. not so sure bout winning ;) but i did have a great time and learned alot from it again :)

al3x: Don't quit on it now...I would work on the eggshell...the render looks really nice.

mies: Smaller wings definitely. As for the pteradactyl look...you only really see that when the side view shows one horn... long as you keep two horns showing...it looks like the little cute dragon it is.

i love to be right =) thanx for agreeing. Im such a sucker for cute characters =) any1 has a crit or idea how to improve tha little fellow? im importing him into zbrush for some detailed skin and see how that works out. though not sure i should. updates later today =)

@mies: Very nice character indeed. If you allow me to give you a hint: sometimes you don't need to focus at the "zbrushing" details or a complex enviroment to create a nice scene. Severall times you can build a nice image simply puting some fun at the situation or make you character more expressive. Just my two cents. good luck! ;)

Nice job, al3x, keep going!:smug:

Here's my little entry. No one knows me so I think I might introduce myself first. I been 3d modeling for about 2 years and I am still learning alot of stuff when it comes to creating decent models. I am still learning about uvw maps and all that other goodies but I got a pretty solid grasp on the actual modeling part I think atleast. As far as the dragon character I created I don't really come up with concepts unless its for a work project or I am really interested in the character otherwise I just try to convey the idea I have in the model itself. I wanted to make a dragon that was cute but not to cute thats why I added some of the funnier items on him. I pretty much used basic shapes for the most part and just extruded and pulled to get what I wanted. The reason hes in a water park to is because a friend suggested it hehe.

I had a little time to read the guidelines and see the submissions to the previous challenges. That made me change my mind about my entry so I left my crusader dragon to rest for a while and started working on a new one. Not crusader, nor lizard warrior this time and hopefully more fit in the challenge.
While working on it I did a test render to se where he is going. Still lots of work to do.

silvaticus - you were able to model and texture that in the 3 days since you posted your other model. let me guess...you're not married.
Really nice work...love the character...love the textures.

Ianchaos- thanks for the appreciation. Actually I am married, I have a kid, work etc. That`s why I have to be fast.
Daddy Doom- thanks, the wings are coming, of course.

In case anyone wondered why he looks a little bit drunk, I made a little composition, that`s how the final image will look like, with better terrain, grass and ...mushrooms.

Wow.... it's been a while since my last post and there's been a lot of new great entries. -silvaticus, mies, gilmond, alex and to all, sorry if i fail to mention everyone as i'm in a pretty rush right now. Just finished modelling the head and a few more details... Guys.. I need your help... are we allowed to make the final image composited with a 2d background or should we model everything in 3d? I was planning to create the foreground and immediate background in 3d but for the horizon, I was planning to composite it with a 2d image. I do hope someone could help me out as soon as possible and please accept my humble thanks in advance. good luck to all and God bless

Thanks again for the replies, everyone.

I also have some questions, just to avoid any misunderstanding:
-once I posted the images here it`s considered an entry, I am in the challenge, right?
-after 31, in the other thread that will be opened, I can post my final image until january 8?
To put it another way: the image posted here just goes to the other thread as it is or I still have plenty of time until the deadline and I can modify, render again, add things and so on and then post it in the new thread?

mies: Great model! but it looks like your dragon is trying to stretch up to get something.. maby try to get im more to the ground..

silvaticus: wicked work man, but i have some problems liking the texture.. i think it looks like old "3D" picture you look at with green and red glasses. :P

silvaticus:

- yup you're in the challenge
- i believe that the images that go here may and may not be the final image... as it is only a work in progress thread, it is not necessary to post the final image here. I believe also that the final entries thread will allow you to post your final images (with a little more post work) as long as you have'nt altered most of the work in progress image you created. Pls. understand that this is how i look at it but a few more opinions might clear things better...

Struggled to post another wip before the end of the month. I really love everyones work and it's really fun here. I do hope you'll like it. Still a lot of work to do. But I think I can manage to do that before the final submission ends.

Things to do:
- A little texture problem in the head, mouth details, horns
- decals
- unhide the other wing (:D teehee, forgot to unhide before the render!)
- props and scene (finally finalized the setting) would go something like the original concept. the setting will be in a building rooftop overlooking a city.
- a little (here and there) tweeking.
- a few more if someone would be kind enough to give a few comments. -thanks in advance.

Nocturn8, thanks for the answer. I think there`s still is enough time until I`ll make a final image.
I liked your dragon more in the previous post, the one with the lots of text. The metal material in this last one is not on my taste but that could be very well only me, I have a general problem with models of cars and other things like that. But I do like the mechanical legs.
Good luck with finishing it!

the rest, looking sweet.

heres an update: its been awhile since the last one. ive been extreamly busy. i know it needs work like the cheezy simple texture. the skinning problem. etc.. etc.. etc... this is how i want to end a busy day :D

I like the textures, but the wing is sure looking strange. Try to get some references on bat wings and stuff. It'll help you out!
