1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!
Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 23rd of January 2008
Subject - Broken Fountain
Broken Fountain: What we're looking for this time is is for you to break your pretty fountain that you made last week! Yes... that's right, we want you to let time and neglect take it's toll and destroy that beautiful work of art that you made last week. If you're just joining us this week... that's fine. Just model out a working fountain according to last week's rules and submit it there... then break it and submit it here! (That goes for anyone that would like to make a brand new fountain to break this week if they're too fond of the fountain they made last week! ;))
Have Fun and Good Luck!

classic gamer: can't wait for your danger mouse; I'm still going to try that mario sunshine thing this weekend. the original... and then a few decades later. good luck everyone. also, do you not update your blog anymore?
ClassicGamer-3DT
10-01-2008, 04:10 PM
I've been meaning to update the blog yes, it's on the list of things to get done once i've got some free time, it's fairly out of date at the moment. So hopefully I will try to update very very soon, plus i've got alot of new artworks i'd like to upload to the blog.
But with work, and free time being taken up with SMC's and GTA Vice City Stories (an oldish game I know, but I got it at a reduced price for christmas) I've only got time to sleep after that lol.
I look forward to seeing Mario, that'll be a cool entry i'm sure :)

Sorry i've not submitted my entry et, but i've been pretty busy lately, sadly though it seems the same with other members too, not even one entry yet.
I hope to submit something asap, i'm dissapointed to see nothing here at the moment, but more dissapointed with myself for not getting around to completing mine yet.

OK well here's my dangermouse absolutely ruined now then.
The mesh was broken and the I booleaned alot of damaged peices out by using landscape planes with subdivisions of 40 by 40 and creating new meshes from the old. The grass was made from one single low poly plane of 1x1 shaped, cloned, copied, and then copied loads more times to create a clump, then the clumps are copied and arranged.
The wooden fencing panels are a little bit repetitive but nevermind.
Not much more to say about this entry really.
A bit busy to have created this, but I wanted to get it done and out of the way, I hope to get some more free time to make more entries before the deadline.
All other information is on the composite.
Kind Regards

Thought I would give a little input here on why I think the topic has had such a poor reception.
My first thought is that if I want something broken in 3d I will model it that way. The act of damaging a model that was intended to be whole the entire time creates problems when it comes to mesh quality. I personally started damaging my bamboo fountain by adding cracks and splits but the mesh became horrendous. Maybe I just don't know how to model damage well but the only other method I can think of besides adding cuts to the mesh is to boolean the pieces and other than Rhino I have yet to use a piece of software that likes booleans very much.
Anyways, my second thought is that unlike the previous two week challenges this one has you modifying an existing model or making an entire new one and then damaging it. The past two week challenges I have seen involved masking pieces that then made up a whole(ex. the legos) or pieces that work together(ex. hero robot/evil robot). To modify an existing model just feels like it goes against the spirit of the speed modeling idea.
So there you have my two thoughts, $0.02, take them or leave them Just please don't construe this as complaining. I love the speed modeling challenges when I have the time to participate and the I like the subjects about 98% of the time.
Oh and to ClassicGamer congrats on the only entry thus far and a nice one at that, nice job.

Sydney075 - Thanks for the comments :) I have to agree a little bit with what you are saying although my mesh was broken with booleans, but then I cleaned my mesh up afterwards.
I'm certainly keen on a new completely different subject, which all being well will be announced in a few mins.
The whole point of a SMC is too be a challenge it has to be something that's not too easy, but not to hard either and on average I feel that the mix of the two is right.
I don't construe you're comments as complaining either, it's simply not been a popular week this week,
BUT
consider this
it is still only the first month of the year, and people are trying to fit back into the daily schedules they had before christmas. And I know i've been busy with home and work aswell, which is why i've only submitted the one entry.
To be honest, only about half and hour ago I realised that this SMC was ending tonight, don't get me wrong I knew it was Wednesday, I just forgot that it was the end of the SMC, that's how quickly the week has gone for me anyway.
Like I say, i'm looking forward to a new topic, something different to sink my teeth into :)
Kind Regards

I was kinda hoping this comp might have been extended. My week was so insane I didn't get a chance to finish. I had never attempted to model something not shiny and new before. (I mean modeling- not textures or rendering.) That's what made this one really interesting for me.
Good entry as always ClassicGamer! Poor DM. He's sure seen better days.

Nice one h2k1. Welcome back.
So as usual my post was delayed by teaching. I'm pretty satisfied with the way it came out. I would have liked to go back and improve the sculpt of the sand. (If I did I have no idea when I could get it rendered and posted.) I can clearly see a spot that needs more sand... It's actually the only thing I look at when I see these renders. lol. Shameful.
Anyway, this is the first serious render I've done with Blender so I learned a lot. Sad that we didn't see more people try this one.

Not many entries so far ... so I try this one.
Wintermute: Great idea. The sand look so realistic.
This was really a challenge ...
I missed the last challange so I had to create a fountain first and the break it.
I'm still a beginner so I tryed to keep it simple (hard enough :hmm:).

Thanks a lot ClassicGamer! I really appreciate that.
And thanks also Stargazy. Your model is pretty cool. We were all beginners once :)! Keep up with these competitions and you'll get faster and better.
hi erm cant remember who wrote something about it but booleans breaking models. I have this problem everytime i use them. if you ahve any tips i'd be very greatful.
Thanks Adam
Booleans ALWAYS screw up the mesh. If you know ahead of time what the
model will be used for then you can try and compensate ( and retain some
sanity ) during the initial build out. For instance, had it been known the
fountain was to be disassembled for phase II it's likely the original model
would have been built a bit differently. *shrug*
I've been trying to find the time / motivation to do these again, but I'm
pretty much swamped at work these days. I do keep track of them though :)

Stargazy : very nice entry, remember, simple things are always winner
so heres my entry, got some free time to make it, as always, modelled in XSI, from primitives, extrusions and bridges connections to make the holes, exported to 3ds for render with v-ray, the grass was made with v-ray fur, and thats all, hope u all like!
im glad to be back :D
