Welcome to the Stylised Animal Monthly Challenge – With a Twist – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select an animal and a scene and post some images for you to use as reference. The animal and the scene is there to be interpreted as and how you wish; in fact, for example, if we say “fish out of water”, then there doesn’t actually need to be a fish at all – it can just be used as a metaphor. Get it? All you have to do then is to think up your concept, model in and create a final 3D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 3DCreative Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the ‘animal and scene’ brief however you see fit. As I said, you can use the ‘animal and scene’ briefs as metaphors if you wish, meaning they don’t actually have to feature the animal that the brief discusses. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation! All we ask is that the ‘animal and scene’ brief is instantly recognisable in your final image, whether literally or metaphorically! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 3D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com). There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th March 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th March to the 15th March 2008, when the winners will be announced by me! We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

Prizes!!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3dtotal.com). We sell lots of items these days, such as our book (http://www.3dtotal.com/book/), Design Studio Press books (http://www.3dtotal.com/design%5Fstudio%5Fpress/), textureCDs (http://www.3dtotal.com/textures/), Shorts DVDs (http://www.3dtotal.com/shorts/), lots of training DVDs (http://www.3dtotal.com/training/), and 12 month subscriptions to 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com) and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com).

2nd Place
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3dtotal.com).

3rd Place
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3dtotal.com).

We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items.

Judging
Everyone who entered can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/3DCreative team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

This month we have chosen BULL IN A CHINA SHOP!

Please don't start new threads: all design sketches, WIPs, feedback should go in this thread! Final Images should be posted in the 'VOTING' thread, which will be created at the end of the month.

Finally, I would like to give thanks to Alo Álvarez who wrote in and kindly suggested this twist to the current stylised challenges to make them more enjoyable for all, so we hope you’ll enjoy it!! This one's for you, Alo! ;) Enjoy! :)

Hey guys! I've decided to enter this months competition :)

I've started modelling the head of my bull.

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/6668/bull1on1.jpg

I should really draw up some concept.. I -know- what I want to model, and can picture it in my head, but maybe I should draw it out?

Very nice challenge! I'm in!

But this time I'll take more the metaphoric instead the literal language of the phrase. ;)

To help some (non-English language users, mostly) people follow the idea, here's the definition, explanation and example of the "Bull in a China Shop" meaning:

Definition: someone who is clumsy; someone who upsets other people's plans

Explanation: Used when talking about a person who is rather insensitive

Examples: He was like a bull in a china shop with our new clients. - His lack of understanding made him appear as a bull in a china shop.

BTW, nicew entries so far!

Cheers!

Wow.. another great challenge.
I think i'm in. here's my concept... "THE CHINA BULL"

Setting:China Shop,broken stuffs here and there,"almost" everything's destroyed
Characters:Store owner looking for the one who caused the trouble.
The bull, doing his best to imitate an object-which is the only item left that "seems untouched" the china doll, (the bull will be imitating a china doll) from the store to hide himself.(looking very worried).

I just hope that I can pull this one off nicely! Good luck to all and God bless

I think I'll go for the elegant tea sipping bull, with his fine china set.

My entry is called "Bull Swimming With Grandpa"
"Bull" is the nickname of the "kid". But, now, after finished my concept, I'm not sure if the tatoo fit on the "Stylized Animal" category. If the moderator allow it, good, if not, don't problem. I'm thinking in another idea. ;P

Looking very good kowai, i like the flow of the curves, what kind of modelling style did you use?

Here's a very quick concept sketch, and did a slight research on china dolls and this is what i've found:

Wikipedia:
A China Doll is a common name for a doll made of porcelain. Originally manufactured as a toy for children they are now made as collectibles or art pieces.

a quick search for a china doll in google images and found a doll image which can be seen below. At first i thought of not using that one because i believe that it is a japanese doll, but coming back to the china doll definition and the fact that a china shop sells mostly china made items(which most products especially in our country came from including a few japanese dolls like that one) I then came up with the sketch below. Sorry for the quality... (i like manually sketching instead of using a wacom for concept arts)Still having scanner problems. had to use a digital camera. Pls. tell me what you think.

hey vox360, that's a cool concept! I just think you could enlarge the bull's head a bit, because it looks very small when compared to the base where it's nailed. That's the fundamental element of the piece, and it could be a bit bigger.
Just a thought :)

No, I'm from the south (Paraná). There's a lot of places with a good Carnaval, like Santa Catarina's beach and Antonina. But the best Carnaval are from Bahia and Pernambuco!:dance::dance:
HEHEHE!!! Cool idea about the semi-naked cows! In fact, there's another huge brazilian popular festival called "Boi-Bumbá" or "Bumba-Meu-Boi", at the North, evolving a mystical bull. Check it out:

ok, no one sayd its bull****, so i continued..

meanings are welcome... the fur for the bull-head took a long time to render..

daddydoom: maybe you could rotate the hand of the bull, that the cup is positioned in the middle of the hoof , could be a funny pose..

Adroit.jrk looks a little better but especially in the nose area and horns it looks messy mabey you have smoothing issues along with uv problems. id help more but i dont know your workflow or what your uvs look like.

Thank you for your backing thatsmessedup I'm very happy with you help. And I have used 3dmax for base mash and zbrush for Pose and style. and for uv's I used PolyPaint in zbrush and as well as render in zbrush. And composition in Adobe Photoshop a little bit. And One thing more may I change the color of horn And nose? And which color should I use?

howdy marzlp. Your scene is not bull***** but even though I'm not a vegan, it kinda freaked me out a bit when I suddenly saw it. Anyway, it's a really well achieved scene.
About my bull's hand. I'll have to check that out. The model is not rigged or anything, so I don't know if that's a good move at this point. But I might relocate de cup a bit and see how it goes.
Tnx for the suggestion!

Hello to everybody around here, I`m in for this month`s challenge too.
If I won`t get too busy I`ll try to participate every month, it`s a nice challenge, a good way to learn and a reason to get models done.
What you`ll see below is what I call a zsketch, a fast way to preview my 3D model and make an idea about how I`m going to continue it. I would like to make hand drawn concepts too but time doesn`t allow it.

Here`s some progress, trying to get an idea of the colors and proportions. Tomorrow it`s time to get to the serious work. Or soon, when I`ll have time.
Your bull is starting to look good, Siege. Evil guy!

Hi All!

Looks like an interesting challenge so thought I would have a go. My rough plan is to have the bull as a shopkeeper of a run down china shop. Just got the head done so far.

Here's a very rough draft of what I'm going for (luckerly my 3D skills are slightly better than my 2D skills :)). So basically a bored looking bull running a china shop. I want to have it fairly cluttered, with lots of old cup and plates, a odd broken one, etc...

Bit of an update:

http://www.tomatoblaster.com/bull3.jpg

My idea now is to have a load of mice causing havok. I've still got lots to do:
- Sort out the bull's arms and back
- Make some mice
- Sort out the textures (need to add a load to the china)
- Add more objects \ detail
- Sort out the lighting

All suggestions welcome.

Nice characters, Michael and Dan. I`m curious about how Michael`s will evolve, it looks like a silly/dreamy bull now, reminds me of a very old cartoon with a bull called Ferdinand.

Here's the ultimate update. I guess I'm calling this one a wrap. What do you guys think?
Thanks for that very flattering comment Mr_Lemon. After what I've seen from your skills, it's really cool to get such an input from you :)

WOOOOW a lot of cool works here!!! Daddydoom, that´s a funny one, lordpisag is right about the tail, and the crows... hahahaha even just the crows could make a funny image! and MivadeVO... that bull has a nice and clean style! i like it.

my entry, I skip the sketch this time... made it during those boring render times here at the office, hehe...(don´t tell it to my boss)

Stroggtank, that bull is a riot :D Are you gonna leave it lowpoly?
I've tried you guys advice and added the motion effect on the tail. Also added the smoke effect coming out of the tea cup.
How do ya like it?

MiVaDeBo
18-02-2008, 07:04 PM
Thanks for those kind words guys, it made my day ('s been a tough one)! :D

DaddyDoom: As much as I love your design the thing that draws a lot of attention is the tail. Maybe bend it a little. It seems so stiff now ;)

jizrik
19-02-2008, 07:09 AM
stroggtank: nice concept,as always:)

DaddyDoom: This month I will vote to you,I like your gentle bull :D.Try to little bit bend the tail.I think it could be better.Maybe Im wrong but I have slight feeling of flying your floor.(maybe the grass make it so)..
To pose-He is going to drink very hot coffee so he should look at it,just a little bit.But maybe you want to archive a different situation,so in that case don't listen to me:D...
How did you make the smoke above the coffee? It seems to me very realistic..

DaddyDoom
19-02-2008, 07:13 AM
Tnx dude. I wont have time to twitch on the model anymore. I guess you guys are right, I could have made the tail a bit more curvy, but now is a bit too late. Lots of client work...
jizrik, the smoke effect is post prod in Photoshop. I used a simple smoke picture over.
Anyway, I feel some improvement going on, comparing to my previous entries on SAC, so the next time, I'll try to work out these things sooner.
Anyway, tnx once again for the inputs you all gave me. There are lots of great models going on here, and it's always a pleasure to dwell among such talented folks :)

Hi, im new to these forums and im attempting to compete. I thought I'd post what I've been doing so far. Although not super stylized like some of your guys cool stuff, I have been refining and putting as much detail into it as possible.

I'm glad I can participate in this challenge since I am paralleling it with a school assignment. Any pointers as to how I can make the bull funny (because I kinda missed that key factor when I read the challenge the first time) would be helpful.
I think Im gonna put him in a china shop with a party hat on with everything broken around him. Maybe the contrast between his serious look and the party hat will make it funny?

MiVaDeBo, that Bull needs to be an Animated Star.
Certainly looks like the noble good guy.

Did a little refining on the head

Tackled the body

Did some posing.
Dropped the body onto the canvas,
then brought in the head and moved it into place.
