Here is my take, not too keen on the subject because I'm a new comer to painting. There are stars in the background, hard to see because I made them small, and resized and it seems I lost most of the stars with that.

Not to pleased with the outcome of this one, It looks too colorful for my liking, and not enough detail. I'll try and put something better together for another if I find time before the deadline.

@rawwad - you inspired me to go give it another shot and do some Homeworld (http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=homeworld+concept&btnG=Search+Images)like concepts. Nice one.
@pogomez - (first one) great job on the station, the perspective looks dead on. I like the vector style, but there is some weird clipping at the bottom of the station (looks like a black box with 20% opacity or so) that keeps drawing my eyes toward it.
@artecnl - awesome piece, great job capturing the feel and atmosphere. I also like how you use a lot of colors, but they don't really distract the eyes too much.
@exyt - without a tablet, that has to be tricky. I like the idea behind it.
@Qbanpensil - looks good, I don't think much more detail is needed. Though maybe a bit sharper, but thats because of resolution issues.

This is my voteable entry for the challenge, titled 'the Worex Ultimatum'. The fighter craft from the Worex system attacks a rival space station, giving them an ultimatum of impending war if they do not submit to their wishes and surrender their space station.

pgomez: your space station looks very real and the construction is very complex. nice colors on it. Overall, great treatment of a nice concept.

rawwad: fantastic concept with equally appealling colors :) there is a lot of movement in your piece. i love the feel.

exyt: nice treatment on the planet buddy. I like it a lot. It's a haunting concept. I hope that's what you have tried to bring out here. Although i agree with you...a little more defining of the space station would tell a better story, but then again, it's just my opinion, i am no artist. All the best.

this station is the station of the last hope....while the planet is dying, some persons save the Life bringing with them a part of the life on earth to create a new world, anywhere in space, or in the station. this story I imagined make me thinks about the film Final fantasy (the first)...natural disaster, life under glass roof, hope, anywhere....
excuse my mistakes, it's hard to say it in english....i'm not clear perhaps.....

hi there ppl, here's mine entry ...

i would like 2 capture feeling of some abandoned (destroyed by time / damaged) space station drifted in the space ...

volito 2 + sketchbook pro (sketch) + photoshop cs2 (paint) + about 4h (i paint bg in less than 30 min. but than i got lots of problems with this station, i paint it from "scratch" about 5 times :( ... but i made it & that's why it takes so much time) :)

Hello. Here is my piece of work. Aprox 3 hours of work (1h for spacestation, 1h for planet and background, rest for little ships and correcting / saturations and so on. I have spend one more hour for trying to add some nice lens flare shining from a sun behind a planet, but when it tooks like 1 hour, i canceled it and sended it as it is now, since it wont be a speed painting anymore :)))

artecnl - cool atmosphere, lights, i just can feel as i'm inside :>

pgomez - well, i got a realy nice feeling of space and 3d from both of images, but i would suggest you to use a pure vector graphic then a combination before you will get a tablet. As this is quite confusing, the mix of "blury" brushes + rendered outlines. I'm sure if you would done the job only as vector, it would looks 10times better! But on the other hand, it got nice taste of "retro" images.

rawwad - industrial images, thats what i like :) + choice of unusual angle makes this image a hot candidate for mine top3 of this challenge :)

exyt - as you say, i agree with that the background is very good (i like a planet), but a spacestation looks poor :( w/e, without a mouse it sux tp digitaly draw, i know. It could help if you would cut in a midle and delete rigt side of image, put sun or right up corner and make some little dark floating spacestation with one side slightly glowing from a sun. It should be doable with mouse, just few black lines with hard brush and shiny glow with white airbrush :)

Qbanpensil - zomg, this is amazing, dark and hot. Dunno why, but it reminds me of Blade Runner, but irealy dont know why :D

Goj - as an idea its very interesting, but what means that buble comming out from a cosmonaut? + i suggest to remove that red lines. Or make them with +shift holding up for make them narrow, if you wanted to make a "movie" feeling xD

Alkaliho - its very original and a bit abstract. Looks very nice :>

drained spirit - nice colors and original idea and angle, I got quite problem with orientation, but i push that away. It got a "retro" feel too with that plates and distortion on surface of the ship, and with that it brings something new here.

Pitchus - well, you're probably the onlyone here who trying to fit "speedpainting" truly meaning with your very fast works :D. Its original and i like a coloring,that i must admit, but i wonder what you would create, if you would break your rule of "10-20 mins work" and worked on something for 2-5 hours as most of comunity in these challenges do xD

zylak - i think i can realy easily identify any of your work. You got your own "airbrush" style and i have to say its pretty good as always! the entire image is great, but only think which little disturb me is the amount of "colored stars and planets" i think they should be all white. but that dont have anything to do with painting, its just realy a pitty details xD

about Ur work ...
there's lots of cool ideas, awesome effects, nice color pallete, but i really don't like 1 thing ... this "spaceship" that's almost 100% @ planet bacground ... i think U should make it more contrasted 2 the planet ... it looks so fake & flat 2 me :( ... & there's one thing that i like mostly - this planet ... i don't know it's intentional but when U look closer U can see that "light patern" became ... ALIEN :) (huuuge head + eyes + torso) ... i think that this should be some kind of continents :) am i right ? ... this looks awesome 4 me :) + this glitter of "sun" comming out of the planet :) ... U captured really great mood friend

i just don't have nerves for that... i grab the tablet, scratch something and figure out that i am bored.. so i quickly color it and go spam somewhere :)

@drained spirit - Nice piece, I think the colors are a bit too dark, I like the angle you gave us.
@zylak - I agree, it is too simple, I tried to add some others stuff, details in on the astronaut and the space station, but I didn't like how it turned out, so I just stuck with the simpler. Next time I'll force myself with the bad one and post that instead, so I'll get some progress. You did a good job on the atmosphere of the picture.
@Reddgrrr - I like the planet and the space atmosphere (nebula? or something) gives me the idea that a space station is hiding there. The only thing I'd change is shading the station and the ships a little more, there could be a little more black on them, and maybe some highlights from the star on some of them. As for the bubble on mine, its a though bubble trying to portray the feeling of being pissed off because he was trying to get back to the space station, but it turned out to be a toy (not sure how well this story is portrayed in the picture), and the red lines were there for me to crop my picture when painting, and I liked how it looked like so I made them thicker and kept them in. I think it gives it a more cartoonish feel to it.
@Somepantsman - Nice and clean, though I don't think that the flares from the star (that is a star right?) would need to be shaded because aren't they made from the same thing as the star itself.
@abyarty - You shading from the top half of the station looks great, but when you get the cross beam you abandon it and it doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the picture. I'm assuming the star is the white one in the background, if so then the planets should have a little bit more darkness on their back sides, like you did with the top of the station. Of course try and put some more detail in it, but I'm bad at that too so .. can't really hound you too much on that.

First, a little about comments on my picture - well, i was looking on my creation today in work, and i must admit that i have a lot darker monitor at home - some parts (little ships + some parts of the big station) are too light - they should be black :P. Well, I will take a care about it in next work, i dont want to fix it, as it is suppose to be a "speedpainting" and corrections could be agaisnt a rules :>

I got a realy lot of hot canditades for top3, so i have decided to sort them now by a mud, that their pictures giving. In this category, i would vote like this:
