1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!
Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 27th of February 2008
Subject - Mobile Communications Device
Mobile Communications Device: They can be metal, they can be plastic, they can even be wooden... No... wait... that was for the last challenge! ;) This time we're looking for those things that most people have in either their pockets or purses. Sometimes they're extremely useful, sometimes they're a pain in the butt... but in any case... we see them everyday. So let's see what you guys have to... oh... hold on... I got to take this phone call...
Have Fun and Good Luck!

Cool idea! i've just got a new mobile phone the Nokia 2310 it's a kinda old phone, but it'd be cool to model it, and i've not modelled a mobile phone/ communications device for years.
I'm in for this one, and we get two weeks too :) They'll be a few entries from me this time around I promise.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys create and Marty's starter.
Good Luck & Kind Regards To All!

Even though he won't fit in your pocket, R2-D2 would qualify as a Mobile Communications Device wouldn't he?
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope
And of course
Sometimes they're extremely useful, sometimes they're a pain in the butt.. fit's our little astromech droid as well. Remember C-3PO's lines?
That little droid has given me nothing but trouble
So unless there are any objections, I'm calling dibs on R2-D2 :-)

Love the starter Marty! really really great work!
Well i'm currently rendering my first entry, i'm calling dibs on Star Trek's Starfleet Docking Communicator! :)
It was the first thing I thought of actually, and i'm really happy with the results, I hope to submit my first entry soon :)
This is going to be a great SMC two weeker I can feel it :)

Ok well I finally managed to get this one rendered out how I liked, I really really enjoyed modelling and texturing this entry. The marble is a coloured layered 3D total texture from the latest V16 CD and it looks wonderful I think, those texture CD's are the best things to own :)
All relevant information is on the composite.

Haven't done one of these in a long time!
Spent more time on the render than the model. Wireframe is on the phone's screen- can post larger if needed. Model is made of primarily beveled splines.
My phone, see here (http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/340/C10715/), still gets comments because it is so small, even though I have had it for 2+ years :)

Thanks Classic Gamer and h2k1, I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. Love the new features in mental ray. I felt like I could never really wrap my head around it before, but now its easy. Especially cool is the rounded corners effect- especially when modeling with splines when you can't chamfer :)
Nice entries, everybody! Keep them coming.

EF > I think you have too much mistakes in my opinion =) thereīs big differences beetween texture on wheels and texture on phone that looks strange ( diffuse, reflections ), maybe you forget texture the handle of the phone box =), and what about windows ? , it look like mirror I can see your scene setup. And the last one , you have crazy shadows =)
I canīt believe that modeling of this scene taken just 45 minutes your great.
sorry for my critiques, but itīs my point of view =):hurt:

yeah...well, difference between textures is not a mistake I guess...it's just that I have good rubber materials, good alloy materials but not so good phonecell materials.
And the handle of the phonebox is chrome.
And the windows are this way so I didn't have to model the inside.
and can you explain me what's wrong with the shadows? It's just a vray light from above.
and the modeling took me even less than 45 min. but I don't know the exact time so I say around 45 minutes.
You don't have to apologize for the critiques...only you should remember that it's a speed modelling contest....so little mistakes (as you call them) are pretty common.
Cheers!

As I said I like your entry and if it fits the category - it's a winner for me for now.
But what I was trying to say that probably there is gonna be a week (as there was one in the previous challenges) when everyone will be asked for modeling a phone boost.. you just gonna have to do the same again! :)

*Jumps out of the darkness*
First model outside of the anim8or forums in a long time. I need more speed modelling practice though. As you can see I'm a tad rusty... plus I spent too much time toying with my refound love, Cinema 4D's renderer.
Based off this:

Made a quick model in 3dsmax (40min) and textured in photoshop. Rendered i V-ray.
Well i decided to model the sony ericsson k850i as i reckon its pretty cool looking, unfortunatly i ran out of time so its missing some details. Works kept me away from any real modelling for about a year now so in all im pretty pleased with it. Some really good models coming out without using all the allowed time so good going ppl!

well brilliant entries coming through, i'm getting there slowly trying to find the time to render out my entries, but I've had trouble with my internet connection at the moment, Firefox is acting like there's no connection and if you don't open up firefox before you get online it hangs for about 10 mins until you can use it, and I can't view threedy, 3D total or youtube and other website through firefox anymore either which I've no idea why as firefox has always been reliable before, i've even re-installed firefox but no success. I'm currently writing this in my aol browser (which I hate, far to small).
Oh well, i'm sure I'll figure it out soon :)

Damn those 60 min  Really, really needed some more 30 min to finish this one. But as you can see I managed to do only the front of it.
Hopefully I have everything right with the entry as I haven't entered these competitions since the new challenges started.
And I hope you`ll like it and good luck to everyone.
Details are on the image.
Modelled in 3d studio Max 9
Time: 60 min
I started doing some texturing work on this, but since it's actually a modelling challenge, I think it may draw the attention away from the modelling. SO I chose not to texture it.
It's rendered in Max's default renderer Scanline, with a skylight and a direction light.

Thanks brian, your model has a nice meshflow to it aswell :)
Hello everybody.
This is my entry and my wallet at the same time :D. That´s a pity that picture can has maximally 195kb :(. Some interest: zipper is made of plane with displacement and opacity map which I have made. Stitching around the wallet is made of plane with a bump map.
Modeling: 59 minutes

Nice modeling peas, but unless im really missing something, it isnt a mobile communications device...
But as said, nice work and very good render!
PKT love ur model, would look good with some decent mats on it if u didnt wanna go down the texture route, thats what i did on my model, i only textured the screen.
Thanks Elf, you might be right.. I'll see if I can update it a little on the materials.
I really like yours aswell, looks like a very nice layout of the mesh.

How do you comunicate with a wallet?
Ok..you can use the money which is in your wallet in a phoneboot, but that doesn't make a wallet a commucation device.
I do have to say that the model itself looks great...so do the textures (except those coins..they looks off)

Hmmm I have to agree, the modelling does looks excellent though, but the wireframe is mirrored to what it should be :hmm:
I'm getting fed up with my creations, they look awful, i'm trying to get them done though, i'm usually never off this site posting entries :)

Well this entry is bit of a cop out really, but I've simply not got enough time to back anything else. What with work commitments and home life to compete with, this is the only entry i've got time to submit. Modelled in just over 20 mins, I really took my time making the intersections etc. It's the good old communications device we all used to try out when at school, with the string :)
Half of me is dissapointed with this, the other is looking forward to a new SMC though.
Here it is anyway :)
