thats looking sweet dude. Can my character live in the top castle to await the passing by robots. lol. the foliage is coming along great. the rock texture is will look perfect once you get a little bit of grain and grit going mix with some small specularity. I can't wait to see this dude lit. cheers

Now that is clever. Nice, I really like that snow beard. Very clever. Those buildings are really coming out now. I think you are onto something so just run with it.

thanks for the comments guys, all your suggestions are spot on, and are currently being worked on, most are due to the diffuse texture being incomplete. hence the seams, untextured sword and gem etc :P
The diffuse is taking forever and a day to do, I am estimating about 60% complete on just the diffuse, I then have to tackle the normal map and spec's.. gonna be a dash to the finish line on this I think =/
here's a quick update. not a huge amount different on the texturing of the main mesh (although a lot of work has gone in :P) and have also added to and expanded the buildings / village on his back. hoping that the textures for the buildings really pop out a bit more and not so flat after normal mapping has been done.

lol daddydoom, why the embaressed faces?
CG, Shiskebab, neokyubi. thanks! :D glad you are liking the progress. am getting happier with it myself as I get closer to completion, still a ways to go, but don't feel like I am fighting it any more :P
neokyubi lol, aye. think burglary crime rate is gonna be pretty low in this village :P
I am almost done with the diffuse texture!! at long last lol, got the sword still to go, and a few bits of tifying and tweaking, but I can start looking at Normal and spec maps very shortly.
here is a 360 of the guy so far

Beautiful. Your concept has evolved remarkably well over the modelling stages, and I think where it's at now is stronger than where you started out.
My one minor crit, it may be the lighting, but the snow is nearly pure white in some area's...looks a little bright. Maybe pull some of those intense whites out, and add a little cool blues/aqua to give the snow a bit more range than just white.

You should be very proud of yourself. This is a novel, interesting and fun character, brilliantly executed and extremely unique. Definitely one of my very favorites. I look forward to seeing it continue.
One of your beauty shots should be from the bottom-up view, adding in an atmospheric effect and perhaps even have his upper half almost in the clowds.

hey guys! thank you very much for the kind messages :D you guys really keeping me going to the final line :)
I've worked on the normal, spec and diffuse maps, and think I am almost there. the normals are barely making a difference to the final model. I had a lot of issues by doing detailed sculpt in zbrush really detracting away from the feel and style. I ended up doing a not so complex normal that aimed to round off some of the edges, and highlight the cracks in the rock yet maintained the styalised look I want to achieve.
I have also set up a basic rig for him, and started exploring poses, and thinking about the plinth / pedastal.
Steamtrooper
06-04-2008, 11:13 PM
Hi Lexicon, looking stunning, that first pose is truly dynamic.
Now hes got the grey/snow beard its reminded me of a recent Thor strory (well worth collecting at the moment), where Odin is telling the story of his own fathers downfall, hes turned to snow but vows to return. Shameless plug for people to buy Thor comics. tee hee.
Crit wise Im dry, but Ill think about it for a while. How about some wildlife in the scene? maybe a Hart or Stag on the lower rocks or a hint of a rookery or squirrel community, just a hint or sillouette. Thats if you havent already ;)
Cant wait to see his pedestal.

07-04-2008, 05:46 AM
Just a quick suggestion you can try if you find it useful: try making the stone incased over his belt, in the logo, blue, as in the colors of Threedy. Also, maybe add some glow here and there in the cracks of the sword, like energy would surge through the weapon. Again, just suggestion, don't mind me if you don't like the ideeas :D

Try using crazybump. It allows you to import a picture (say your diffuse texture), and it converts it into a normal map that you can adjust via sliders. Really cool program. BTW nice texture work......wish I could paint like that.
DaddyDoom
07-04-2008, 08:10 AM
L3X mate! Really cool to see how you literally climbed a mountain to get this far. Really cool results and all the effort was rewarded. The poses are truly dynamic but now you need a scenario that gives the character the exact notion of scale, like a field and him crossing a river or something. Also, some bands of birds circling around him and clouds would be cool too.
Awesome stuff bro!

aboout the pedestal, definitely do small citys placed all over it... it will increase the feel of scale even more. maybe small mountains forests etc :-D i think that will add up a nice feel to it ^^

thanks for the comments and the suggestions :D
Avatar, great suggestions for the sword. Will be working on that next! there is definatly something missing for the sword
Neokyubi, great ideas :) so far I have been working on a nature themed pedastal. I decided against buildings there as with only today and possibly some of friday to work on it, I need to start finalising :P
here's a test beauty render. just seeing what I can dow with lighting etc. really want to start concentrating on lighting, effects (for beauty shots), and render settings. any suggestions on these would be very much appreciatted.
thanks once again for all the comments :D

my only concern is how you will show both front and back in the same imaqe. Maybe a split screen, but that would take away from the artistic feel you got going.

07-04-2008, 08:40 PM
i think the dark gray sky does not really fit since part of his skin is almost the same color. I would like a more clear blue sky which also makes the coldness up high on his shoulders feelable. but very nice pedestal :-D i love it ^^

thanks big toe :D reading that made me step back and look again at the submission rules! few things there I had forgot. for example, in my test beauty shot I am using a vray material for the water.. I better ditch that
i think the dark gray sky does not really fit since part of his skin is almost the same color. I would like a more clear blue sky which also makes the coldness up high on his shoulders feelable. but very nice pedestal :-D i love it ^^
I kinda like the moody grey sky look with the character, but agree it isnt helping the sense of scale and the 'winter' areas. I ll test out a few other colours for the sky and pick what i like :D
ROFL....it looks like he was attacked my a bazillion pigeons. but seriously tho...looks great
LOL :ugh:
well I have continued to look at setting up for my final renderings. and a few more tweaks here and there I want to look at. I want to add the energy / glow to the sword, and have a strange shadow being cast on his back that needs looking at. think I have a smooth group issue on that poly :P
Out of town again until later in the week, so friday should be for finalising :D
thank you all once again for the comments, very happy that you like it :D
and a quick test of my winning shot, front and back pre tweaks...
looking at it now, I also don't like the way the right arm is looking on the 'back' render. another thing to add to the list :P

08-04-2008, 03:15 AM
Looks very good.
Two things.
1.) I love the pedistal, for adding the sense of scale. A being of such mass would diplace a lot of dirt, maybe add some foot prints in the "path" up the hill.
2.) I'm sure this was a design decision but have you considered adding a glow effect for the eyes? Just to add some punch?
By all means I think after you tweak the right arm you can easily call it done.
Great job, more giants are coming to play from 3DTotal, watch out!
Warlock 279
08-04-2008, 07:24 AM
Awesome. The pedestal is almost perfect, I think a big ol' foot print on the back side as suggested by Mel, would be the only thing missing.
Sword looks cool, I think the village looks great, and I think moving from the foliage everywhere to the transitioned look was definitely the right direction to go. I think it balances nicely, the visual weight of the foliage at the bottom against the village at the top.
DaddyDoom
08-04-2008, 08:08 AM
Beautiful... no other words.
Agree with the footprints, and maybe to get him a bit bigger. Comparing the size of the trees with the size of the houses, they would have to be really tall trees or really small houses. Perhaps reduce the trees in the pedestal a bit...
Otherwise, amazing work mate!

You know, back when you first submitted your Goliath of nature concept, I told the guys at work that "if this guy can translate that concept into a solid low poly model, he's going to win"....I'm happy to say that I don't believe my faith was misplaced there.
It's been great to see your many updates, and the final entires are spectacular. It's got all the hallmarks of a winner. Not only are the modelling and texturing skills up to par, but the design, presentation and overall unique atmosphere set this entry apart from the pack. I think it's going to go far in the competition, and you've definitely got a model to be proud of I think. Excellent work and congratulations on finishing the competition!
