Going to start off doing a variety of sketches and then see what I can bring out of them into a fleshed out idea.

Some sort of elf in armour.

Yeah... those are great concepts

I did find it odd 3DT is not in 2D comp, but eatpoo.com is not in 3D. I guess the name itself "3DTotal" implies, although inaccurate, focus only on 3D.

The colors in this piece are awesome I love the kinda blue-ish feel to them, are you going for the ice element on it? if so try to make her pieces feel more jagged maybe you know like frozen to go with the element. Well that is a suggestion but the colors are awesome!!

The back.
Need to figure out some way of attaching these forms to the back, the details will be changed, but should stay roughly like this.

Great design...simple, but very very effective.

Those elements in the back, I'd probably cut holes in the jacket to allow them to connect to either an piece of armor she's wearing, or perhaps directly to her body. You'd have to assume the coat was designed to accommodate those fins I'd figure.

platypus_green
20-02-2008, 08:02 PM
Decided to darken the clothing a little more. Also made the spear darker so the electricity/magic/lightning effect will show up much more clearer.
Added the logo to the shoulder but doesn't quite work so will have to alter the patterns to get it to fit.

Great piece! She's coming along very nicely and I really like the interesting design of the ropes/chords on the upper body. The simplicity and saturation level of the color really let the glows breathe.. Can't wait to see her break into 3d!

As far as the logo on the shoulder, could this possibly go on her jacket? Maybe below the right shoulder? Keep it comin!

love the pose for the latest concept :D I have to agree with yoyoman, I like the more organic feel of the gauntlets, but in some ways it conflicts with the rest of the uniform. The leg plates are certainly better in that they now look attached to the belt area (before they looked a little 'stuck on')

your concepts continue to look beautiful :) will be watching this thread to see were you take the details next. keep up the great work

platypus_green
21-02-2008, 02:21 PM
They do seem a tad different from the rest of the style, but that's good since I intend to make these gauntlets as the artifacts. I'm going with something like they grow out along the arm during combat, but during rest they go back to being gloves.

platypus_green
21-02-2008, 04:48 PM
I'm happy with the design of the face so I will start modeling that now while I ponder what to do for the design of the rest. Quick sculpt from a sphere to get the head proportions in.
Later on when I'm happy with the proportions I'll export this to max to create a base mesh and set up the uv mapping then send that new base mesh into zbrush to do the detail sculpting.

platypus_green
21-02-2008, 06:32 PM
Archeris: I set up a custom brush which I use for just about all my sketching in photoshop. It's a hard edge round brush that doesn't change scale too much with pressure. the pressure mainly controls the flow of the brush.

I suppose the hip armour does seem similar to Saber.

I'm Pretty much happy with this version. now time to take it into max to build the base mesh from.

Puckducker
21-02-2008, 10:03 PM
You seem to be going ahead very well...everything looks pretty clear.

I do agree with bBox about the head. Maybe try to give it some more stylization other than just the ears as well, and push it into a bit more fantasy type look.

platypus_green
21-02-2008, 10:31 PM
the images are from zbrush without any perspective on.
It should look fine when put into a perspective viewport, hopefully. I was going for a fairly strong jawline but it did come out a bit strong.
Also with a texture on and eyelashes the character should look a lot more feminine. I should do a quick colour map to check and see if I need to change the model.

I think i'll prob makes the eyes a little bigger, and maybe rounding the cheek bones a little more may help. Also looking at it now maybe thinning the ears a tad may help, but I do like the look of their length.

Anyway, plenty of time left to tweak the head.

bb0x
21-02-2008, 11:27 PM
Aye I thought you were going for the strong jawline, I just made it (too) round to get the femininity over.

I don't think the jawline itself is a big problem. I think the chin should be rounded out a little and perhaps the bottom half of the face a bit more narrow, to get that egg shaped going on.

About the perspective thing I see what you mean. It didn't feel too masculine in the other views, just the front view for me.

I'm beginning to go off the concept, it's feeling too boring to me.

Did this sketch to try and get a feel of the character.

I may go back to the drawing board and start afresh. Will think on this.

Pixelsage
26-02-2008, 05:37 AM
I think this character is still workable. Probably its main downfall is the symmetry in the character and the weapon, which gives it more of a static feeling. It beckons to be more epic and freeflowing.

I think I spoke to you about the weapon. Making one of the blades longer at the end, curving the handle... simple things like that might be able to make it feel less static. Also, the pose you gave her is very vertical. Play with diagonals a bit more, in both the way she moves and in her overall design.

I know it was a quick sketch, but she is definitely starting to look more like a water/ice invoker. One quick thought... whatever element you decide to do, if you change it or not, make sure you find a way to use the element in a way it hasn't been used before. The obvious no-no's are fireballs and tornados, but you get the point.

Looking forward to more work!

yeah, im in the same boat that im not quite happy with my character, but im hopping that buy working on it ill play with it and change it. though nice work so far.

i might rehash what i think you were doing with your last pic; think about how she wields her weapon and uses it. from stance to magical ability. that quick pic of yours is nice.

heh, now im thinking its entirly possible that you have more in mind than you are conveing... so im not really one to talk cause i dont think my concepts say much.

anyway, keep up the awesome work.

I really liked the skirt she had, with the armor plating on em. The new concept is awesome aswel. What kinda weapon are you going to give here?

Because she looks so kind I would give here a big ass weapon. Just something which you wouldnt expect a girl like this to wear.

platypus_green
02-03-2008, 05:32 PM
I was thinking of giving her two close range melee blade like weapons that connect together to form a spear like she had in the older concept.

platypus_green
03-03-2008, 01:20 AM
Couldn't decide on a better concept so I merged the last concept with the older one to get this. Still needs more work, but getting somewhat there.

03-03-2008, 03:14 AM
Ah yes, the merged concepts look great. I wasn't entirely sure I agreed with the new direction you were taking, but the latest concept you posted seems to be the best of the bunch. My one suggestion is to perhaps to try and retain a bit of the military look of your last concept, I really liked that. Maybe just a few pips on the collar, or an insignia...but that's just me. Looks great regardless.

She looks neat---good work.

platypus_green
03-03-2008, 03:53 AM
I still need to work on areas like the boots, I think something more traditional might work better.

Puckducker: yeah. I've been wondering how to do that. I liked the military uniform the earlier concept had. As you said maybe adding an insignia or something like that to the collar area might do the trick.

arathalion
03-03-2008, 06:34 AM
before it had a kind of military officer/dress uniform feel whilst now she has a more of a soldierish feel. perhaps have a look at how she looks with the smooth sleeves as apposed to those armed strap things. or perhaps just make that coat of hers dressy, using the shoulder rank things with and some insignia. or even go as far as cords (those string dress bits) not sure how practical they are though, so they might not work on her strait gear though... trying to remember if mine ever got in the way (scouts)...

perhaps just putting those looping things on her shoulders would work.

platypus_green
04-03-2008, 11:50 PM
Changed the dress style. lengthened it and made it asymmetrical.
Quite like the boots now. Will try adding buckles or such to give them more detail.

I'm thinking I need to change the hip armour plates. Maybe making them more detailed. Also I need to figure out how the character will carry the weapons when not in combat; some sort of attachment/clip on the hip armour maybe? The weapon will be two hand held blade like weapons that connect together to form something like the spear seen in earlier concepts.

Also I've still not figured out how to get back that military officer feel it had before.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/47/10cp5.jpg

Puckducker
05-03-2008, 12:43 AM
Update looks good. I think you've got back some of that military look of your earlier concepts just by adding the trim around the edges of the cloth....looks very formal, which makes it look much more like a uniform.

I really think a couple stripes or pips around the collar would really pull it back to that military feel. The collar is a fairly common characteristic for all military uniforms, and it's something I think people can latch on to to figure out the style your going for, if you've got some sort of "rank insignia" looking thing up here. Just looking at your headshot in your icon, you can tell it's a military uniform pretty much only by looking at the collar.

Maybe you could figure out how to get the epaulets back in there as well, since that would help...but really, I think you're almost there with this concept, there's not too much more that I'd want to do with it. Additional detail like on the thigh armor can be hammered out when you start texturing, since I don't think much of it would be very geometry effecting.

Really great work all together. Can't wait to see the model.

:3 Love your concepts! All so clean and pretty! But I reckon out of all the ideas you've done the lady with the black spikey hair is by far the most interesting and convincing to me. I would leave the boots alone. The are full of character right now, anything else may just over do it.

How is the model coming, have you played with it since the last sculpt post?

platypus_green
16-03-2008, 04:05 AM
have been trying to design the weapon with little luck so I did this sketch to try and get a more solid feel of the forms (pose referenced off an image I found on the net). leaving the colours light in this sketch so the shapes are clearer, the final colours will be much darker.
Also temporarily removed the hip armour and jacket pouches as well as the arm thin plates so I can see the areas beneath more clearer. I think I'm going to have some form of strap coming out from the dress slits on th thigh sides where the thigh armour plates join on. Also I'm thinking of giving her some kind of separate gloves.
As for the hair, I've shortened the back of the head hair, I think it looks better this way.
I know I'm running out of time to start the model properly. But I find that if I have a firm plan then the modeling stage is very quick. Any ambiguities and I spend ages trying things in 3d.

...I find that if I have a firm plan then the modeling stage is very quick. Any ambiguities and I spend ages trying things in 3d.

...Tell me about it, I've wasted so much time because I didn't have a finalized idea before jumping into things. Always under the false assumption that I'll be able to 'see' it when I get the model fleshed out more, and sure, that works sometimes, but more often than not, it just eats time while I stare blankly at it.

Character looks good, the clothing design is pretty simple, but still very interesting, elegant in a way really.

platypus_green
17-03-2008, 04:59 PM
Started on the basic mesh for the body. Even though this won't be seen in the final model I think it's necessary to make sure that I position all the clothing correctly. So the poly count for this mesh is not limited as it's a guide.

Proportions still need some work. especially on the torso. Face was removed because I will be making a separate sculpt for that, might even use the head sculpt from before with some heavy modification.

Set to be about 195cm tall which is 6'4" approx.

Very little time left. Here's some progress on the sculpt.
not started the fine detailing yet and the hip armour and dress have just been imported into zbrush and need a lot more work.
I'm unsure on the arms and since I'm running out of time I may just leave the design as it is and clean it up.
