So.. time to make a frontpage, when the thread is getting longer...

Name: Rahab
Race: Evil squid demon from the pits of watery hell! :D
Class: Warlord
Artifact weapon: Evil squid-fishie of the depths! Don't know if it's darkness or water yet... :)

So..here is a concept-pic, and the latest render :)

Haha thats incredibly bizarre. I'm stoked to see how it turns out.

Askguden

Started fiddling around with the mesh... the face is just a placeholder-thingy I threw together. Still blocking out the basic shapes of the torso... :)

19-02-2008, 12:58 AM
looking good, kinda reminds me of quake, what software are you using?

Askguden
19-02-2008, 07:18 AM
I'm using Modo for the sub-D and will be using Zbrush 3 for sculpting. :)

Askguden
19-02-2008, 09:42 PM
Random update. Just blocking out the body (which you can't see here) while adding random details whenever I feel like giving him some love. He probably needs alot. Doesn't look like he got alot when he was a.. mini-squid demon warlord of darkness... or whatever. ^^

Tamdamdam... Some more work on the model. I am redesigning some parts, and while I'm doing that I'm trying to find in what kind of direction I want to take the detailing, so I'm basically just playing around with the head-area and see what I get. :) I need to feel the love ^^

kaizokuace
21-02-2008, 09:34 PM
I like the suit, looks totally sweet! hopefully you will make the 9k limit with those kinds of details.

omnicypher
21-02-2008, 09:46 PM
acctually he has a pretty solid shape, normal mapping should get all those little details on the metal under 9000 with no problem. the difficult parts will be the tentacles, legs and any protruding parts that affect the silohette.

Puckducker
21-02-2008, 09:57 PM
Very different looking concept. Looks kinda like a giant boot.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. What sort of things do you plan on doing to incorporate your elemental power?

Askguden
21-02-2008, 10:02 PM
Yeah, the bootshape has been dealt with ^^ Its because his spine was to straight in the concept, I made a bit more... curvy. A bit bent forward, and the arms change the silloutte quite much. I'm not quite sure how to design the elemental power. First I thought that the fourth arm was gonna be the weapon, some kind of wierd darkness..claw-thingy. But now I'm gonna redesign part of the armor and toss some wild ideas around, so I just might end up incorporating it into the armor. Still have no idea what to call him either...

I like the suit, looks totally sweet! hopefully you will make the 9k limit with those kinds of details.

Thanks... yeah, the limit wont be a problem... It just boils down to what kind of detail I'll have in my silloutte, all the legs and tentacles are gonna swallow quite alot, sadly..

Conejo Blanco
21-02-2008, 10:08 PM
This is lookin great, and obviously you're ridiculously talented. I would say, though, that the judges may not take too kindly to his armor, which doesn't look hand-made, but looks extremely hi-tech. Is it technology per se? Maybe not, but they may be biased against you because of this. Just a thought.

Askguden
21-02-2008, 10:14 PM
hehe, thanks ^^

Yeah, the rules states that you may not use any kind of electricity, etc. But his armor is just that, a big piece of metal harvested from some ancient robot or machine, and then bolted together with leatherstraps and rivets. I think that the organic and low-tech parts of the model will be more obvious once the armor starts to come together with the different pieces. :) ...I hope ^^

Askguden
22-02-2008, 11:39 AM
YEah, I figured out what his weapon is gonna be. It's gonna be some kind of monster octopus/fish that is strapped to his shoulder, and then he's gonna use his fourth arm to open its mouth via a chain attached to a piercing in its lower lip, and when it opens it's mouth it pukes dark slime over people... uhm... that sounds so wierd. Will probably make more sense when I draw it ^^

Robbelibobban

make a quick sketch of it so we can see the awesomeness in action!

hmm very cool concept!

Askguden
22-02-2008, 11:40 PM
Uhm...yeah. So. This is what his body looks like :D Just working my way downwards now, trying to test out some different designs I came up with. That happy thing on his shoulder is an evil octopus/fish-thing, just so you know. ^^ It's gonna be evil, trust me! All the dummy-parts look really silly right now, but I hope you can see past that ;)

omnicypher
23-02-2008, 01:07 AM
its comming along nicely, although so far it seems more custom built rather than crudely strapped together, but a few lether belts might fix it up. thats a good looking low poly human, is it just for scale reference or will it be used on the concept?

Askguden
23-02-2008, 10:35 AM
The human is just arshs basemesh for size reference. Also.. I came up with a name for him, "Rahab"
Quoted from wikipedia: (the source of all accurate knowledge...)
"Rahab is mentioned in the Talmud and the Old Testament, and its etymology is given as "noise", "tumult" and "arrogance".
This name originally designated the primordial abyss, the water-dragon of darkness and chaos, and so comparable to Leviathan and Tiamat. Rahab later became a particular demon, inhabitant of the sea, especially associated with the Red Sea, in this case sometimes associated with Leviathan"

Details are looking pretty good...though, some of the high res bits of a bit of a "poly smooth" look to them, where you're not getting nice crisp edges where two pieces should be intersecting. Perhaps you should do these pieces with separate geometry, rather than extruded pieces or cut in edges.

Update time...

Yeah, it kinda looks like he is wearing power armor. But that is because it's scavenged parts of the armor of his ancestors, and their metal gods ;) But its not functional, but their metalworking skills were far better ^^

LOL! I was wondering what the little fellah would do in the battle, now I know.

Will you go the a stylish look? Or for a more realistic one?

For the fish I think I will go for a bit over the top crazy look, but I'm not quite sure. I'll do some quck passes in Zbrush just to play around with his proportions, but I think he will look rather funny, in a disturbing way, with his little cap and all that ^^

Aaaaaand, update! I've been playing around with some of the parts that I didn't like, for example his behind and his shoulderpads, replaced them with the new and improved... thingy! :-) I'm still dooodling around abit and try to get a clue of what I'm doing, but I'm gettting there, I think :O

Great character dude! The ZB details are gorgeous.
Imo, the legs are a bit too short comparing to the torso. It would have a really small gravity center to help it keep balanced. If you can make the legs a bit longer, it will look creepier, more menacing and overall, even cooler.
Just a thought anyway!

Thanks :-) Hmm, yeah, I actually made the legs a bit longer, they were even shorter before. I have tried making them even longer, more like arachnid legs, but that didn't look as good. Can give it another shot and see what it looks like. I think he's got enough stability, though. His feet are placed like an ellipsoid, if I make them longer it would be more like a circle, but I think that would be to overdo it, but I will give it a shot and see how it looks :)

Thanks, I would even say that they are 11 times more cooler, since the old ones were the definition of uncool. Still got plenty of coolness to be added, though :D

Thanks for the comments :) I feel that the model is soon starting to resemble what it's supposed to look like, now that most of the major shapes are in place... but I still have alot of leeway to redesign the funky stuff.

Askguden
02-03-2008, 08:26 PM
EVEN less retarded arms, but still very retarded! And I must do something about that cute muppet on his shoulder soon... But I'm having second thoughts about it now, and that's not good.. :( also did some zbrushing of the lower body, but I'm to lazy to show it now ^^

Askguden
04-03-2008, 11:41 AM
Updateuru! His muppet got a hat and some fake teeth! yay! Also added more leather :] Still trying to nail the design of the shield arm, and the lower part of the torso. Drawing alot of quick sketches, all of them turn out to be crap, so I'm kind of stuck, design-wise... :)

Robbelibobban
04-03-2008, 11:46 AM
he's starting to look really mean! frikkin awesome with the blue light also. cherri-o mate! jiggle on!

Savagefluff
04-03-2008, 12:05 PM
He looks rad, but those legs don't look like they could take him very far. I suggest making them chunkier and possibly longer. Make them look like they're holding him up, he is a heavy boy.

;3 keep it up, love your rendering!

and I agree with the others, changing the arms was a great idea.

Puckducker
04-03-2008, 01:39 PM
Yeah, the latest updates look really freaky. It'll be interesting to see how this guy turns out when reduced down to low poly.

I agree with Savage, the legs could use a bit more thought. Maybe take a closer look at some real insect legs, but he's looking fairly unique regardless.

nice update, askguden. i agree with the leg issue. look at a centipede, crabs and lobsters. all stick-like legs but pretty long.

as for the muppet, very cool. make sure to make the teeth uber-fake :D

Askguden

Chung Wong
09-03-2008, 12:57 AM
Ace, been looking at this for some time now, I was worried that you was going to keep the face plain looking, but it looks pretty damn sweet! Wonder what you're going to do with the legs. I'm sure it will look ace.

Askguden
09-03-2008, 10:44 AM
Chung Wong: Thanks :) I'm trying to keep the detail at a moderate level, Don't want to include details that will only mud up the normalmap... for legs I'm going for a bit of... crab/insectlegs mixed with the good 'ol randomness of Zbrush :D

L3XICON: Thanks alot man :D Yeah, he will suck out your soul!

BiG ToE-3DT: hehe, yeah... I made the lowpoly for the two...knifearms yesterday, today I'm gonna try to wrap up the head and make the lowpoly for that area, it's looking tough though... I have the distinct feeling that my model wont be the smoothest one out there, 8 legs and 4 arms takes it toll, you know :D I will probably make the lowpoly around 11 000 for the baking and unwrapping, then make a LOD of it. Will probably be easier than to push it down from the start. But we'll see ^^

This is looking good, but I'm still pretty concerned about the technological look of this thing. I understand that it's supposed to look like trashy metal bits put together, but I can't shake the feeling like this is a suit that was manufactured for THIS guy.
Otherwise, this is great, and I love the creature on his shoulder! Really cool!

Nice sculpt, so much detail everywhere. Definitely a unique character. I like how you handled the "shield" of sorts protecting the creature on his shoulder.

Askguden
12-03-2008, 11:35 AM
Conejo Blanco: Yeah, I know what you mean, but still, all of it is lowtech. And we could shape metal and bend stuff way before we had electricity. :-) Just look at medieval armor :-) So I hope that it's still alright ^^

Warlock 279 Thanks alot, it's gonna be a bit redesigned, but rather similar to the other shoulderpad designwise.

Anyway, update on the arm... been working on the lowpoly mostly now, but it's still too early to show :)

Askguden
12-03-2008, 07:12 PM
Damn you parkin and bulgarov :D You make my Zbrush model feel ashamed of himself! But I dragged him out of his corner and this is what it looks like right now. (note: yes, the ens of the tentacles look like blegh, don't sure how to end them in a good way..)

Askguden
13-03-2008, 10:41 PM
So... been beefing up the details a bit.. here's two close-up renders of his be-hind ^^

Puckducker
14-03-2008, 02:01 AM
Heh the rear details are looking good. I think his legs are going to need some zB treatment down the line.

I think you should maybe really focus on your low poly mesh before adding too many more details though. Adding all the high poly details you want is great, but they won't mean anything if they don't translate well to your low poly cage.

Askguden
14-03-2008, 07:14 AM
Yeah, the legs are gonna get the good ol' ZB-treatment, don't you worry :D

Actually, I am focusing on the lowpolymesh, and all this small detail really isn't a problem, it's capturing all the big shapes that is the problem right now, since I went totally bat-**** crazy with the silluette ^^ I have already tested out normalmaprendering to check what kind of level of detail I can use in the highpoly and still capture it to the lowpoly. :)

Robbelibobban
15-03-2008, 08:57 AM
nice work pal! i really like that you can see the details under the armor bits. wonderful!

Askguden
15-03-2008, 09:00 AM
yeeeeeees...random update! I'm really working on random stuff right now.. a ittle lowpoly here..a little zbrush there... a little sub-ds there... haha, I'm getting confused by my own model, but here's the finished shoulderpad anyway :)

Askguden
16-03-2008, 12:22 PM
Yes, almost final modo-model, just missing some final stuff on his claw-arm, and stuff hon his third arm. and then I can take more of it into zbrush...

Robbelibobban
16-03-2008, 12:24 PM

that looks so cool and so original. great work

Askguden
18-03-2008, 09:54 PM
Yeah...so here is a WIP of the lowpoly...still too many polygons, but atleast now I've managed to capture the silluoette. It's 10500 now, so it'll probabl be 11 000 when finished, then I'll drag it down to 10 000 - 10 500 and bake it, and then drag it screaming and kicking down under 9000 :-P

Askguden
29-03-2008, 11:41 AM

Well done man! I admit, I wasn't so sure about this design (not from a technical or artistic standpoint, because you're obviously really good), because it looked too mechanical, but seeing it textured adds a whole new look, and I really appreciate it, looks great! I'm really anxious to see how this progresses.

9000 polys makes for a pretty complex single character. The weapons are well integrated. It's badass!
I have noticed that your workflow starts with a high poly model. Is it your method of choice or you sometimes do it the other way around?

ToxicAvenger: Thanks man :) I always start with making the highpoly first, since I usually create stuff with rather intricate shapes, it would be impossible to know where to put the polys of the lowpoly without making the highpoly first. I try to not limit the shape of my highpoly by having a lowpoly cage to build after :) I really feel that it's the only way to work. :)
DaddyDoom: Nope, no front shot yet ;-D Will probably update with one in the next update. Still laying out base textures and stuff, so some areas are still grey-only :)

I would increase the size of the front render, and leave the back render the way it is.

hmm, yeah, good idea :) That pic is downscaled though, to 70%, since it was too big for the forum :)

really awesome work :D if it wasnt in the low polygon forum area, I would be swearing blind this was a high poly. really impressive how you have carried through the detail from your sculpt to the low poly model normal map and textures :D

kirgan: Man tackar, man tackar :-D

L3XICON: Thanks man :-) I really felt that my model suffered from the polycount though, too many shapes for the silouette >_<

I think you did a great job, the texturing is excellent, the hi-poly work excellent as well, and overall truly original and engaging. Very rich color palette, too, which I appreciate. This is fantastic Askguden, you should be proud!
