Hello pingu722. Love these beginnings, especially the regal feel they many of them have. Seems like some of them feel like a battle clericon while others feel like a empathetic, healer type.
Great sketches!
Keep it goin!
Very very nice. I like silhouette 4 and the 3/4ths from the waist up concept at the bottom.

Ah, seeing stuff like this is why I wish I could be more effective at thumb nailing....just such great looking stuff for quick sketches....
I think I like the sil of #5 the most, and I really like the overall design in the lowest left hand corner (besides the plant looking thing). At least, that one looks the most like a warrior class.

Wow. The centaur and panther both stand out as really unique and complete entry ideas. I think if you go with one of those you've got a great shot in this contest
Yeah both of those are awesome, I Love sexual feel of them all really awesome, if you could pull that feel off with the pose in 3d WOW!

I loved the rider and her panther also, sad to see them go.
The wind queen and her limbs of wind look very cool also though. The 1st of the three connects to the idea the most to me. The feathery headdress fits well.. I like the clothes of the 3rd also. It'll be cool to see this idea develop...keep goin, it's lookin good!

After going through those three concepts above,I have made up my mind to settle this new figure, which contains those essential ideas in each old ones and is even more practicable.
The female Invoker named Soul-of-Wind is still the key character in this three-in-one combination.
Those cloakand headgear are artifact weapons she owns. She uses them to summon the huge nature power which rests among air and triggers lightning,so that she is able to float over the surface of the earth as well as to destroy enemies.
An animal for mounting still remains.
It's a creature which looks like a panther,or a Harley-Davidson in flesh form, and consists of thuderclouds fulfilling bunch of unstable electrons.
It's not only used for transport but also a lethal fighting partner with thunder-like roars, extreamly bright lightning and high voltage power sent from heaven.
The horrible cloud-shaped face behind my Invoker is a whirl of wind and thunderclouds, altogether it comes into being a tornado or hurricane in order to wipe away all hindrance to help army pushing forward,if necessary.

Killer designs. All of your concepts so far have been wonderful to look at.
Of all of them, I think I like your initial girl riding panther concept the best. It's a bit more in the realm of conventional than the other ones, but sometimes conventional just works best. At least to me, thinking of how these concepts will look fully modelled and textured and set up, I see that initial concept working out the best.
Doesn't change that they all look great on their own though.

Beautiful work man! I have a question as im new to mudbox work.
Are the belt buckles and and the armor test piece you did a stamp of some kind?
Because im working on a model and would like to add some detail like yours
other than just modeling it separately.

The hair is crazy cool (how'd you do that?). The cat is great too.....the musculature looks good though the legs look a tad long. About the only thing I can crit is that there are a lot of elements that you sculpted out from the surface rather than modeled and it's apparent (like straps and such). The border between the belts or upper leg straps is soft like clay rather than crisp. But it's all really well done.

I assumed by the look of it ;) I think you did a great job on all parts and it will be easy for the normal map but as damageINC said, it will look a bit soft
like a cloth belt rather than a leather belt. I love it either way. :)

pingu722
28-03-2008, 02:21 PM
First of all,thx for all your crits and suggestions.
About the tail,I would like to mold some strands of thunderclouds floating in the air instead of animal hairs. It hasn't come out perfectly and I am keeping fixing it.
I know I still need to take lots of efforts to get this work better.
And I plan to make all critical corrections in the next working process as doing lowpoly.

28-03-2008, 04:53 PM
how did you make those cloud/ghost tendril parts? looks amazing!
Great work! The animal looks kinda like a lynx so
you might try looking at it with no tail or a short one like a lynx.
I think it would look good without a tail but thats just my 2 cents.
Just a suggestion. ;)

1 question
Do you have the high poly model mapped and then basically use a gray scale map as a stencil and pull the detail out... or do you apply stencils a piece at a time?
Just wondering how you wraped the dress and belts so nicely.
keep up the good work!
pingu722
29-03-2008, 12:30 AM
Jak:
Thanks for those two pics you attatched, they are helpful.
I think I will keep the tail but maybe make it shorter and more "furry".
I use the former method you just said (high poly mapped and use a gray scale... ... )then do some corrections.
Clouds were made by the same way.

07-04-2008, 05:37 PM
I'm going to go against the grain here, because to tell you all about how awesome you are isn't very helpful, even though it's nice and I like when ppl tell me that. But my criticism is that the girl has no personality. She has no mood, no character. Are you going to toy with her expression at all?
Weiryknight
07-04-2008, 05:55 PM
wow...looking cool. Love the cat. However, I feel the cat and ghost mouth, look as if they belong to one another....but I feel the girl is a little detached. perhaps if her skirt gave the wispy ghostly look? or maybe once you've colored them they will begin harmonizing. I thought i'd put that out there. I do agree with Conejo Blanco about her bland face. tho i'm sure she'll look fine onced rigged and posed. Either way your work is inspiring.

11-04-2008, 06:50 AM
Please tell me that that's not going to be the final pose you use... If you have everything front on, you lose all the wonderful details you worked on. I love your modelling work and designs but if you leave the pose like that, you won't get much of a second glance. Composition, lighting, pose, etc... all are key to presentation. You know how they say that 'first impressions are lasting ones', well, if you don't make that first impression pop then you will be overlooked.
I'm only saying this because I'm sad to see such great work lost to poor final compositing. It may be too late but if you get the chance try something with more impact. Have you ever seen one of those cool airbrushed posters they used to sell with an amazon warrior riding a giant cat of sorts? Those posters were damn good because the poses were dramatic and you saw an energy in them. They had this raw power about them that made your feel like the artwork had a life of their own.
Anyway, if you have a chance, do a search for those posters and see what I mean.
Otherwise, I wish you the best of luck in this competition whatever happens.
Cheers,
Revanto ;P

11-04-2008, 12:50 PM
I do love the beauty shot you made. It really does give justice to your work. You see, the problem with the front pose is that your three characters look like one complex blob. You have to look carefully to separate the ghost, the rider and the cat. When they said they wanted front and back shots for the final render, it doesn't mean you can't separate the elements. You could have had the woman standing next to the cat and have the ghost floating more above the cat so they look separate. I think the purpose of the final shot is to see as much of the details as possible. You could have left the woman riding the cat just in the beauty shot. To be honest, now that I think about it, I doubt that there should be much action in the final shot. The judges may want to judge your sculpting and texturing abilities taken from a minimal pose first before seeing what you can do with your model.
Look, I could be wrong. The judges may love the final shot but remember that they won't be judging from a pure 'that looks pretty' angle. They are professionals and will look at things from a technical angle as well. It may also be a good way of recruiting new artists into the gaming world. Talent is talent but they may want to make sure you don't cut corners and may be capable of meeting expectations in the gaming world. Even if you don't win, you may still get contacted by a gaming company who are impressed with your work.
Anyway, I think it may be too late. What is it? Only one day to go? Basically, whatever you do is up to you. I'm just trying to think differently in regards to the competition because I can bet you that all the rules they have set have a logical reason behind them.
Best of luck and I hope you are rewarded for your hard work in this competition.
Cheers,
Revanto ;P

Ah, yes, you've got such a unique design it can be really tough to get it all into the required image size, with the required views of the model. I honestly think that just the view you've got of the bottom right of your beauty shot is the only thing you should show off for your beauty. It's very strong, and is the best view of the character.
It sucks that you've got so many beautifully detailed area's of your character, that you can't show them all off equally, but right now I think you're beauty shot is a little hodgepodgy, and it's difficult to tell what's going on where. I think 1 single strong view of your character is better than multiple, smaller weaker views.
Still, stunning work though. It's been very enjoyable to see this character come from concept to where it is now. I'm impressed.

12-04-2008, 02:36 PM
My last bit of feedback for now:
showed this one to the guys at the studio yesterday, most of em could hardly believe that the close up on the beauty shot ( upper right hand corner) was actually textured 3d art and not painting. And we're fookin game developers. Very impressive texture work there!
As technically impressive as some of the other entries on this forum are, none of those top 3 that come to mind right away are as solidly executed as this piece, nor were they as ambitious. Personally very tired of seeing more unreal/gears of war/quake rip offs.
Furthermore you've got some really strong focal points, and area's that are not just filled up with alpha brushed details for the sake of details. It's really important to allow the viewer to rest they're eyes while pulling them to the next focal point, which I find happening here.
Hopefully the folks judging this comp. are as keen to this kinda artistry!
Good luck, this turned out very nice:D

To Puckducker:
Glad you like the bottom right pic,'cos I myself like it very much.^^
It's truely a challenge to settle all pics I want to demonstrate on the limited square-shaped scope, but rules are rules, right?
As my beauty shot, yes,it's kinda crowded at aspect of layout, but I think this situation is necessary and not avoidable.
I would like to show this three-in-one team is able to fight in the air as well as on land, their special relationship--not only master / steeds or pets, they will not only kick enemies' axx altogether, but also do their best even though they have to seperate to each other for a while in battle.
And some critical details will be ready in the corners to be evaluated.
Thanks for your reply .^^
To Intron:
Your replys really cheer me up.
I know this model I just have completed does not quite fit the favor of main stream.
Those tough, strong metal heros still often make me "Wow!!!",and I appriciate them and artists who made these undestroyable heros a lot.
But I think it will bring me more fun to create something different,ex:a female character, not just a hot, sexy girl, but a calm, mysterious and elegant Athena, she's with some special friends coming from Mother Nature...
Anyway, very thankful about your encouragement in these days.
Good luck to you,too.

definatly agree with earlier comments, your renders in the beauty shots have a real feel of a classic fantasy painting, truly superb choices of colours and composition :) the winning pose sheet is still a little confusing, but the beauty shots really make up for that. congrats on completion! and really inspiring work all the way from concept through to completed models.

Definitely feel where you're coming from there Pingu. It's difficult sometimes when you've got so much excellent work to present, and only a couple images to do it in. I think I just want to see that one beauty pose on it's own for the sole reason that it's so well done I don't want anything else to take space away from it.
But, I think you're in a pretty good spot if your biggest problem is having far too much good work to possibly show off fully. Amazing work Pingu, good luck in the judging round.

This is a demo reel which shows the model with texture on it and gradually turning into wire frame.
I also added an very simple extra effect on "the Ghost" to show how I suppose it would look like in games.
I know this clip is not an essential object for submitting, and maybe it's unlikely to be seen by judges,I still want to share with you guys who might be interested in this model.

Congrats on making it to the the end. This turned out really great, and you managed to squeeze a lot into the 9k limit. I really like your palette, it's kind of muted almost, it works well for you character I think. The turnaround is awesome, the ghost is too cool. Well done.
