Níðhöggr, or Nidhoggr, is a serpent from Nordic mythology who lurked in the earth beneath the world tree and sucked from its roots.
I didn't start out with that, but as I was considering naming my idea I found this and I think its perfect.
Name: Níðhöggr
Race: Serpentine
Class: Stalker
Artifact Element: Darkness/void
My creature is a snake-like alien who is a specialist in information gathering, infiltration, and assasination. The background ideas in my mind for his physiology are from an earthy perspective, while his power is occult. His skills in stealth come from his use of mind-altering and mind-enhancing drugs which allow him heightened senses and short future-sight, to infiltrate without any technology. His knowledge (un-drugged) comes from a massive library of knowledge within his mind, an occult-style idea of his 'sight into the unknown' thus the darkness/void element.
I haven't considered too much what the artifact will be, but I am thinking it will be not neccesarily an item that has a lot of obvious use, but as a 'focus' item used in his mental magicks.
I have some other sketches done but I'll upload them in a bit-- i'm gonna go with the right--four arms, snake-underside, large mean head. (That first one was when I was trying to decide whether or not to do a juggernaught warlord)

Sorry about that diagonality. Anyway Here's my head concecpts, I went with A, and also the beginnings of my 3D head. I'm working in ZBrush to do more detailing on the head and to flesh out the concept. I want it to look a lot more calculating than that illustration looks.

I fleshed out the face more in ZBrush. I plan on finishing more of the geometry of the body cause I still haven't defined that well yet. Oh, and the teeth shape/detail I kind of ignored in this stage, but they're still kinda there.

Nice, I like the sketches. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the body attached to that head.
Is that zBrush model just an initial knock out for concepting, or are you planning on starting with that for modelling your model?

That was my knock out for concepting. I actually started out with a pretty low-poly mesh that i have kept using, and added the detail onto that in zbrush.

Okay I finished the basic geometry of the body--I'm not sure if the arm geometry is okay. So far no artifact yet, i'm sketching more next. I guess I'm kind of doing this in a weird order. I also plan on adding more detail, as he should be wearing clothes, and I'm going to also add a pouch and plenty of vials and stuff for his drugs.
I hope its not toooooo strange that I'm having my character use mind enhancing drugs... though I guess if I called them potions, which I imagined them more like, then I guess it makes more sense. In the texturing I want to add a lot of things that makes him look like he's been awake a long time, with lesions and things to indicate how drugged up he is most of the time, all the detriment from using potions so much.
also a note on the tail--i plan on having him have like a fin on the back, which is why the tail appears really high--- it won't just be really tall, but instead will have a flap of skin there which will be more obvious in texture

First work out your concept before going in to modelling imo.

looking good. will you be giving him a scale texture? what are his colors? and are you going to take it into zbrush? I could see this being a cool design

Yes, I do plan on going to ZBrush. But first, I wanted to start adding on more of the details of his costume. I also haven't decided on colors yet, but I want to give him very dark, earthy tones with some redness and skin discoloration, and some sores and red sensitive eyes.
All of that is because of my original idea of this guy overusing massive amounts of potions and drugs to enhance his mental powers.
This is a really weird way of doing this but I printed out the wireframe and drew over it. I hadn't anything lying around that would really show up well so I just used some highlighters so it'd be easy to see what i drew. Those aren't really the colors I am gonna go for, but it did make me consider using some kind of colors for the tubes and pipes that go through him to make them stand out.

You should really check out some of the Ophidian race from Rackam's Confrontation game (like this one: http://www.rackham-store.com/boutique/fiche_produit.cfm?type=607&ref=FROPTR01&code_lg=lg_fr&pag=1&num=40)
Very good reference for your character....
