very nice reference! I can only recognize the wizard guy from How'l moving castle, though... The guy with the turban on his head looks pretty cool...whoever drew it, I'd contact him if the picture is copyrighted :D

Mr Kite drew that, he is my adaptive daddy.
I like the idea that your artifact is what gave the machines life, and now your using it to bring the fallen back to the battlefield. It's like a teacher having to kill a student for using the knoledge given to them in the wrong way. Time to crush young grasshoppa.

Great work! I love the little metal trim pieces on the wings, and the 3dtotal lamp light.
I'm actually not sure about the amputated arm though...I think that look might be difficult to pull off in a still posed model. My first impression was that you just had not finished your concept yet, and painted in the rest of the arm...your end result my unintentionally look unfinished. And for what your risking, I'm not sure the amputated arm adds much.
Just a thought. Top notch otherwise.

beautiful renderings, i liked the pyramid lamp thats the first concept had, its suits 3DT even it it is not part of the logo. the feathers growing on the arms are a nice touch to the design.

amazing piece of work. thats all i can say.
I defiantly like the avian feet over the human ones. I also love the details, very nice job. I would love to see it in 3D and I think it would be a shame if you didn't model it. the technical complexity alone would make it a fun project to work on.

why would anybody need to make a 3d modell if the concept itself is a stupendous hit???!!!
amazing work Stephan!!!
but I´m not quite sure about the chicken legs :D (I beg your pardon)... IMO, they don´t really reflect that overall mood or atmosphere you´ve created around this character.
I mean, the guy reflects calmness, some sort of weird power and strength, and the last one doesn´t really match the skiny legs. Again, in my opinion only.

If you do plan on hitting the 2d section as well, I would go with the eatpoo forum for the simple fact that are are just 2d for this comp. Only makes sense for the 3d only forum to join with the 2d only forum. Together we will dominate the dominance war.

I Really like the painting its really good. I especially like his weapon.

Looking awesome so far. Im doing a similar feeling character, in the sense of the angel theme. Im hopefully going for a more sinister approach and playing with the idea of giving a demon-esque looking character holy powers.
Very excited to see this come together.
Good luck!

I think I have to agree with this. have you watched a bird walk recently? it's not very dignified
otherwise - what can I say? you've got a stinking great pile of painting ability and a refreshing "not a man in a big suit of armour" concept.
I am impressed (and that doesn't happen often on account of my arrogance)

Sadly, I think 3Dtotal is the only forum not entered in both 3d and 2d parts of DWIII (With eatpoo exclusive to 2d). To enter this concept in 2d you'd have to do it through another forum that participates in both.
Not 100% sure on that but wherever you do it, I'd like to see this concept flesh out in full.
MonteCristo
28-02-2008, 09:17 AM
Yeah. That's basically the deal, and of course, no two of your competition concepts can be the same, so you have to pick one or the other: 3D or 2D. My advice would be not to stretch yourself too thin (Unless your other idea is wicked smart, of course). Don't forget how much stuff there is to enter here. The concept entry needs accompaniment of sketches etc...
To get this done to the necessary standard is not gonna be a quick job IMO. If it was me, I'd get on to the 3D, make the thing. Then If You've got a week or two left at the end have a crack at the concept one.
Great work by the way. Atz why ya got pluggged! ;)

So I have a general idea of Pandora, and as I make the 7 sins I will adjust they're 3d versions to match up with one another (might take props off one and combine it with others etc) I want a subtle look that feels like "queen of the goblins" so I hope that carries over. The sins themselves might be a little more sketchy because I really need to start 3d with so much to tackle. I expect to wrap up every character this week.
Pandora won't be the priority, I'm going to build the 7 first then if I have time I'll include their master.

She has a real feel of 'Mad Hettie' from the 'Sandman' comic, only shes got Deaths looks. And thats no bad thing, Hettie was a full on force of nature if you got on her bad side. (just checked your refs, and seeing the bag lady and the pigeon feeder, Im guessing that Hettie realy was your inspiration. Funny I was thinking of doing Merv :). http://kleinletters.com/LetteringImages/MervP.jpg
Love your work, good luck.

I have to admit I don't know who Mad Hettie is. I'd love to see some pictures, I searched with no luck.
I'm thinking about making a girl that's been possessed by pandora rather than pandora herself.

I'm thinking that the Mad Hettie, is just a female version of the mad hatter. Which means she doesn't exist. So don't worry about her.
Stephan_R
04-03-2008, 07:13 AM
2 left... and keep in mind, these are loose concepts I will definitely need to unify them when I have them all in 3d. Similar feathers, patterns, armor and skin colors etc. They're kinda goofy, and I think a young girl as pandora would be more suitable.

I'm thinking that the Mad Hettie, is just a female version of the mad hatter. Which means she doesn't exist. So don't worry about her. - close but no cigar, she is a very very old (older than America); NOT-witch. A character in Neil Gaimans 'The high cost of living' and the 'Sandman' masterpiece which everyone should read at least once, it realy is the best comic ever written, and for those without concepts yet, a great source of inspiration.
I did try to find you some refs of the old girl 'Mad Hettie', before I posted last time, but like you said, theres is very little to nothing online.
Here - goto the sneek peek download and there she is in all her mad adorable glory - http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=1601
I wasnt accusing you of anything, just youll see how alike your character is in many ways so assumed you must be a reader of Sandman.

I'm so lost... *sniff* lost in a sea of endless confusion and frustration.
I'm considering going to the drawing board again. I do like the idea of the 7 sins, but not sure about this direction. You know that gut feeling an artist gets that is just short of inspiring yourself... and I think it's because I'm "too" close to Brian Froud's work.
Thanks for the comments, I'll have to figure it out asap.
BiG ToE-3DT
05-03-2008, 06:57 PM
do the sins have to be creatures, I mean, it will be hard enough to model the main character with the tri count the way it is, so trying to squeeze 7 more characters out of it might be pushing it. Maybe place the sins back in the box. Then use the box as the artifact.
So far all your concepts rock, but time is running out and I gotta see one of these things in 3d, and the winners circle.
MonteCristo
05-03-2008, 07:13 PM
Here's my 2cents, (not that you ever reply to me, but <sigh> here it is anyway)... I think you were on the right track with the first image and with the refs. I have to admit when you posted up the birds I was taken aback and much less enthused by the direction. Froud is not the way to go here IMO, rather, stick with something subtler. Less Froud, more Metal Gear. Look at any boss they ever did in metal gear and see how understated, yet over-the-top they are at the same time.
Your first image of Pandora was bang on. What I expected was for you to create a series of really symbolic birds, each with their own attribute. That could be really cool, an archetype of your own creation. Perhaps the bird's presence alone is able to inspire their token sin in others. I'd give that angle a go if it was me.
My other concern with the new ones was the poly count. Granted, 9000 is a lot. But even if you made another combined character for the last two sins + Pandora (girl or otherwise) + the remaining 4 sins + their weapons. We're looking at 1500 polys per character. And that is cutting it fine -- albeit possible.
You could go back to the drawing board but that would be a waste IMO. Rather, go back to your first image and approach the birds in a more sophisticated way. Does any of that answer your gut feeling? :)
mel_danes
05-03-2008, 09:17 PM
I second Monty (Sorry for the abbrv.)
The original concept is spot on, original, unusual and very far from the Beefy Steroid God of War we see everywhere in this comp. Not that big guys with big swords is bad....wait di I say that right.
Anyway, go with you original idea and work the birds in as little chara's, not anything elaborate just symbols or small couple hundred poly conjurations.
My 2 cents
Stephan_R
05-03-2008, 09:57 PM
Wow, that was a great response... Big Toe, Monte and Mel and I think that's what my vague idea resembled in the beginning. I guess I'm feeling like ripping Pandora or ripping Froud is just not what I had in mind, and I hoped all along that it would inspire a new path but it hasn't yet. I really value all these opinions and I usually read each one twice after its posted to let even the smallest detail or suggestion sink in.
I love MGS, it's one of my favorite series (especiall 3 and now 4) and would love to approach it with this mindset. Thank you, I need to go back to the sketching board maybe not necessarily idea board :O

Yup, for what its worth I think you have a great look, and idea there. Odd enough to blend with the crowd and normal enough to stand out amongst the elite, go with stylized birds, one for anyone that might come along, and keep the box tantalizing, just a glimmer of gold ;) , you never know when you might need a miracle...

Some people were wanting me to post something, so against my judgement here's some sloppy renders of my WIP meshes! (sorry I'm not taking the time to really make some detailed renders)
They're around 8500 or so, so lots of optimizing to go because I want to make tons and tons of feathers and hair strands to really sell those areas. The knives on his legs are actually modelled out so I could lose those polys as well. The wings, second pair of arms and heads aren't finished by any means, but I feel pretty good about the rest. I texture faster and better than I model (imo) so I'm spending a lot of time trying to get these up to par.
