Edit : Added latest images to this post.

I've started developing work for our company ShineFX's portfolio.
The first project is a skateboarder character. A fully detailed high
res model,to be used in film and commericals. Progress will be posted
here for comments and ideas.

The focus is on accuracy, detail and great photoreal renders.
The software is XSI and photoshop, zbrush being used for some
details and cloth sculpting.

I hope you enjoy the progress.

The first images of the skateboard.

Next is texturing, and then to begin work on the skateboarder character ( And move the thread to the organic section perhaps )

hey its a forum, he can say what he wants, leave the judging to the moderators. JHarford, that is crazy detail, on the trucks, and the bearings. You even have detailed bushings lol! Who knew a skateboard was that complex to model! Great job dude.

Mr-Ru : Thanks ru!

karabo : Thanks mate... it's been a long time, and i'm glad to be producing again. we go way back, thanks for the comments.

madm4tt : Appreciated madm4tt, You've been around here almost as long as me, Thanks for your comment.

Shadow Wolf :Thanks shadow wolf

UnsteadyTeddy : LIES!

Seb-Lev : Thanks for the support mate, sorry about teddy :).

Tuss4 : Thanks for the support Tuss, Glad to have it. It's really crazy you know. When you begin to deconstruct something thought so simple, It turns out to be so complex. There were a lot of pieces involved, and that means a lot to unwrap. It's just lucky that XSI is a work of art in itself and the UV mapping is a delight.

--Strattus-- : Thanks ever so much, I'm really glad you like it.

UnsteadyTeddy: Alright teddy, calm down . It's true thought, Teddy's a good friend of mine, and although his comment was entirely unsupportive and just plain MEAN :P, I understand his point ;) And don't worry. It will be finished.

AutopsySoldier : Hey mate!, thanks for looking, your right, I modeled every single piece on the board. It was important to have photo realistic renders from this, and the same in exploded views. So all parts needed to be modeled, textured and shaded. It was good fun too. The project led me into learning XSI in and out and that's why it took a little longer than usual.

So here it is, the initial render. After many tests, here is a near final shot. There is still more work to be done on the shaders and the textures.

Excellent work, man. I really like the scratches and scuffs you put in there. It all looks so real. I especially like the bolt on the left and how it's differnet from the other one

Great stuff!
Render and texturing looks great. Only thing that stands out for me is the way the truck is worn\scratched. I'v skated for 20+ years and when grinding on a truck on street or ramp the truck gets "deeper" (edit: and more directional) damage. More structural then paint damage if i am making any sense here :)

Great work.

UnsteadyTeddy
05-03-2008, 09:27 AM
Yep, H20 is right. It would look far more realistc if it was well worn, with deeper grooving on the trucks, more dirt in the scratches, maybe even worn down to the axle a bit. Can't tell too much from this angle but doesn't seem to be any/ much wear on the ends of the deck from ollieing and sliding.
What renderer are you using ? Textures seem a tad blurry. Materials are sweet though.

JHarford
05-03-2008, 02:34 PM
UnsteadyTeddy Thanks for the comments teddy. The brief was to create a skateboard that had only been used a couple of times. So to judge whether it is 'realistic' to a well worn, 1 year old board, is not objective.

Glad you like the work nevertheless.

H2O Thanks for your interest H2O, I've also skateboarded for quite a few years. As I posted to teddy the board is to look as though it's only been used a few times. It's still rather new. The directional scratches and grooves in the trucks would not happen yet. I made sure during this project to research and look at various boards in this state to check how the wearing happens at this time. The rider would have only grinded a few times and probably done a few axle stalls. Perhaps sometime in the future a rework would be called to make a further worn version, but for now this is how it should look. I appreciate your comments. thanks a lot.

edit:From this render, it's impossible to tell just how deep those grooves are, let's have some more discussion when i've posted another angle.
Kage Cheers Kage, :)

--Strattus-- Woah, thanks for the great compliments!, It's mental ray By the way

karabo Thanks a lot Karabo. Glad you like it.

Good job Joe, keep up the quality in this. I can not wait to see a character that will match this detail. Get to work, save your animation renders for after the project so that you don't loose interest.

Hey,Joe. Nice to see you posting again.

This stuff is great! I've never seen any rendered/textured works from you (at least as far as I can remember) so it's kinda cool to see something "new" from you.The quality of the render is just top notch! Very accurate work there ;) And being more of an "organic modeling" guy myself,I just can't wait to see your start on the character.

Anyway,great work :)

Hi J Harford,

Your rendering is really, really nice. I Have a small suggestion, the attachment point of the metal plate on the truck against the board. Although it is a very new board as you've said. I think when you skate in halfpipes, grind, ollie alot. This is what most skaters do, i've also skated for a while, i think that the board suffers a little bit from pushing the metal plate against the board. It is pretty hard wood, but i think there would be some sight of worn around the metal plate, i mean, perhaps its not looking like this on your board, but i think it also adds a little bit more of realism.

p.s: I've read that you like shenmue. Im one of the biggest fans of shenmue. :) I got shenmue 1`and 2 on the dreamcast and also 2 on the xbox, because shenmue 2 on the dreamcast has alot of slowdown and is only in japanese. In my latest project which isn't finished yet, i give a ode to Ryo hazuki. My character in the chamber of oceans, Lucas, wears his symbol from his jacket on his long coat. If you want to see this you could check out me thread. In the video making off im also going to use it as reference.

AutopsySoldier Thanks for your support, posting updates now!, Skateboarder still to come soon.

Star_Scream Haha, I want to skate a lot more recently after working on this too!.

tjerkotten Hi tj, first off, thanks a lot for the interest in the thread, I checked out your work and I'm a big admirer. It's good to see such creativity in 3d these days. I checked out your project and I'm really happy to see shenmue being kept alive. I began work on a shenmue character model a while back, but haven't finished it. Perhaps we could do a collaboration one day?

Im glad you like the skateboard model in progress. I will add the suggested details to the texture on the board. Where the metal would press in. I think it would be so minimal at this stage of its life, but your right it would add something, and suggest a better connection between the board and the trucks.

Congrats on getting married, that's fantastic. Have a wonderful honeymoon.
I'm actually getting married myself in 10 days!

Aleksandr Kir. Hiya Alex.. Thanks!, Great to see you replying to my posts again :D. Your right detail and accuracy was important in this, and it will be too with the character, so keep checking back and an update should follow soon on that.

USED-3DT: Thanks for the plug!, It's an honor to be up there with such great works.

Jesus, Man! You are not messing around here, lol. Nice work.
Forgive my ignorance on such matters but wouldn't the bearings be lubricated with some kind of grease to make them slide easily? I don't get that feeling from the way you have textured them.

They would be more glossy if it were brand new. But after skating for a while dirt get's in there and tends to dirty things up. The lubricant actually oozes out a bit when theyre new and you can kind of see that darker spot on the bearing cover from the lubricant coming out...i think everything is coming out pretty good. oh man i can't wait to see the skater!!!!!

10-03-2008, 03:27 PM
Kage haha!, That's funny. :D . I'll have to bear that in mind.

AutopsySoldier That's a good point mate. Thanks. I actually modeled all the grease inside the bearing, but figured I would leave it out for that last render as the textures/shaders weren't looking great. It's probably not needed, so i'll leave it out now.

karabo Hey mate, thanks for the comments, your right there should be grease. See the other comment for more,
I will modify the texture though to be more dull, dirty and greasy, I think it will be more appealing that way. Thanks

AutopsySoldier Thanks!, :D

After that i'm off on my honeymoon for 3 weeks. So i'll be semi-inactive during that time. Then right back onto the project.

I agree with now about the board. I will put those scratches, wear and paint flakes in the board textures. It does add more realism and solidifies the board to the trucks. Thanks.

How was your honey moon btw buddy?

Any chance you could make your comment picture a bit smaller and with a link to the high res? Just for the loading times of this thread. And keeping focus on the new images? I can even host it if you want ? PM me. Thanks

Hehe, I love your work! :D

That writing on the board, is that a seperate mesh? Don't know why I'm asking that really, but for such a fantastic render, I can't really comment on the textures, because you know those look great, and you seem to also be a very good modeller.

I find in the 3D sector, your mostly either good at modelling, or texturing, never both, and rendering to a state that you are.

JHarford
26-03-2008, 07:58 AM
Hi kage

Thanks for the compliments. The writing on the board is not a separate mesh, in fact it is part of the texture for the board.

But there is a >very minor< thing to criticise!
You should Rotate the Nuts on the track a bit, so you can't see that they are copys.

Hey, very nice work. The texturing and modeling of this is great. It's looking real.

One thing I noticed is that you could possibly add a little more bump texture to the wheels. It's a little hard to notice the bump on the wheels with just a texture.

amazing detail! you could always scratch up the trucks and deck a bit more, it kinda looks like a new deck and trucks with old nuts and bolts holding it together. and im not really sure why you modeled the bearings with such detail, but its freaking sweet!

JHarford
23-05-2008, 02:51 PM
Thanks everyone, your kind comments and ideas are much appreciated. The 'chewed up nuts ;) ' , are old parts from an older deck. The final animation includes the bearings ' exploding' to music as it were. so that's why they are so high res. , To show the inside of the skateboard and the way it works, same with the trucks and kingpin, the threads are all modeled for the same reason.

Thanks again, the response has been great.
