View Full Version : Mar 2008 - SUPER Stylised Challenge!: 'Executioner'
Lynette-3dt
03-03-2008, 10:58 AM
Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.
So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, model it, and create a final 3D image of this in your own way!
This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 3DCreative Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!
What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challange however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!
What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 3D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com). There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th April 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th April to the 15th April 2008, when the winners will be announced by me! We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!
Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!
Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!
Prizes!!

3rd Place
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3dtotal.com).

Judging
Everyone who entered can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/3DCreative team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!
This month we have chosen THE EXECUTIONER!

wait i am a little confused...
this is stylized ANIMAL challenge and in exception we are doing human this month?
or the contest is a hybrid between animal and executioner?!

i have the same doubt actually...

hi all!!!
i would like to join but im confused as well.....
it is written: "The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish"
what does it means? do we have to make a "funny executioner" (animal? person?) or it can be EVERYTHING that remind an execution or an executer?
just a stupid example:
if i make a sushi chef (sushi master? whatever..) cutting with his knife a sushi roll... is it that an executer?
does it works?
thanks
DaddyDoom
05-03-2008, 01:59 PM
If it's cutting a living fish head it can be an executioner...
Lynette-3dt
05-03-2008, 02:11 PM
hello all,
hmm, seems there is a little confusion about the challenge this month. after doing stylised animals for some time, we started to run dry of new ideas and so the 3DTotal team came up with the SUPER STYLISED CHALLENGE!!
this is not necessarily going to be a "stylised people" challenge; for example, in future months we might see a "Carnivorous Plant" challenge, or even a "Spaceship" one!!
so let's say farewell to the animals for the time being - they've had a good run and have made us all smile - and let's bring on some SUPER stylised goodness in the coming months, and see how it all goes! you've all done so well with the animals and seem to have really enjoyed the previous challenges, but let's spice things up a little now with some more challenging briefs, and maybe we can entice a few more challengees along the way! :)
as always, suggestions are very welcome for future challenges. mail me at lynette@3dtotal.com with any suggestions for future SUPER STYLISED CHALLENGE briefs, and we'll consider all suggestions! ;)
hope you enjoy this one and i hope this has cleared things up for anyone feeling a bit confused.
cheers,
Lynette

ahan , so we have to make superstylised executioner be it any living being ?
right? Lynette Ma'am.
or animals are a big no for this one .
almagesto
05-03-2008, 04:40 PM
sorry lynette, but i dont catch it..
in the end does it have to be an "executioner" (animal or person) OR is enough if the "title" remind to an "executioner" like the example i wrote before.
thank u
E.
Lynette-3dt
05-03-2008, 05:07 PM
any 'living being' is cool! ;)
Lynette-3dt
05-03-2008, 05:09 PM
almagesto, please take a look at the reference images supplied in the first post as this will give you an idea of what the brief should bring to mind! you're free to make it what you want: as long as it's a stylised executioner.:)
Warin-3DT
05-03-2008, 05:15 PM
Yes, basically it can be anything; a human eating watermelon carrying an big axe like Daddydoom's one (;) cute!), either fat or slim human, or alien creatures or it can be a sushi chef (sushi master? whatever..) cutting with his knife a sushi roll...anything you can come out with!
but[b/]
The [B]key is 'it has to still remain executioner most recognizable components' So, which part will be stylized to make it unique , eye catching, have 'wow' factor and to show your imaginations are totally up to you! This is what Stylized competition is for!
Enjoy!

Hey there,
First thing I am just a 14 year old kid with a lot of time on his hands but who also aspires to be some sort of 3d artist in the future so here's my concept and don't expect any miracle work.
Lynette-3dt
05-03-2008, 07:55 PM
hello again everyone,
i've just realised why everyone's so confused: because this thread is in the 'Stylised Animal Challenge' Forum Group... so now i get why everyone thinks they need to make this month's Executioner an animal! hehe. i'm sorry about that: we've always run our stylised challenges in this forum so I'll get this sorted out tomorrow [at home now ;)]
ok, so please don't feel you have to make the executioner an animal - this is a "stylised executioner" challenge and you are free to interpret and stylise him/her as you wish, which can include an animal concept if you want! have fun and sorry for the confusion.
cheers everyone :)

well if your going to say...take any object and stick a hood on it and give it a axe.......than i don't see a challenge.
a tree log with hood and axe....must be a executioner..lol....i get what you mean though.....i'm just trying not to be to obvious...but the end result hopefully will scream execution afterall.....anyway good luck every one

hey santiakpalacios, yep, you can be political, but please be careful as remember the top images will be featured in 3DCreative magazine, so we don't want to upset anyone with the final images. is that okay? so you can touch on political matters, yes, but let's not be offensive to anyone's beliefs or religions etc. hope that answers your question; give me a mail at lynette@3dtotal.com if you have any other questions.:)
good luck!

I have just discovered how incredibly inadequate I am at modeling. I have been trying very hard to model him using NURBS (my character) but I just can't get it right. I guess that is probably because this is the first thing I have tried to model with no guide or tutorial to follow. Anywho, any advice on any good books, websites, anything to help me to learn?
blanktarget
06-03-2008, 08:17 PM
If you're using 3ds do not use nurbs. There is actually a nice tutorial on the front page about edge loops and edge modeling. This is the style most commonly used and, in my opinion, the easiest. Make some concept, do a front and side view, bring it into your program of choice and start modeling.

Hypnogiraffe: I recommend you to use polygons, which are easier to use. I use nurbs in some cases and then I convert those nurbs into polys.
After finishing the poly model I then convert to subdivisions without smoothing the geometry. This gives you a very good quality and clean geometry.

Same methods apply, just different software. You just start by creating a single quad (create polygon tool), then it's just selecting edges, extruding, and tweaking. Rinse, repeat. If you think about it, it's similar to a spider spinning a web...or knitting...haha. If you want to see the poly-by-poly method applied using Maya, check out JJ Mortimer's incredible tut:

I have started by thinking of the set first. So this is just a conceptual sketch as I have had several ideas how to go about this challenge. All had very different character concepts and ranging from animal to children to humanoid to business giants like the one thats software installer needs to .EXEcute:crazy: no second guesses on what probs may come from that.
So I will go the traditional route like the others here. Any comments or crits please.
111791
O.k. well here is a design for my character to be. Simply, he is a new age sensitive executioner who wants to make the experience delightful for all his would be guests...
111800
Now I had better start modeling.
P.s. to the mods. Is it possible to have more than one entry, say for example a sequence of a story, or, series of characters? I need to read the rules again I know, just thought I would ask.
For instance I was also thinking of doing one of my 1 year old who I caught ripping the legs off a cicada's shell which gave me the following idea.

i did some changes in the mask such as pull out a nose and etc.
played more with the texture, add glossines to the eyes and more
also build the axe, pretty happy with it, maybe play with the texture more...
still have some unknown errors such as the white scratch on the axe handle and the dirt on the charecter knee, altough that last one i kinda like :)

sounds like you just have the pivot at the hand... have the mesh selected in "object mode" (ie: not vert or edge etc) and hold down D and V and you will be able to snap the pivot point to the middile of your mesh.
(D = move pivot, V = snap)

Tnx for the comments guys! I had a few days trying to figure how to start this character, but I think I'm getting it the right way :)
Here's an update. Started to define the colors and textures, and also to add details and new elements. After this, I'll start to work on the scene.

Hey guys great prompt this month and great entries so far! Here's a bit of my progress so far no concept on paper at the moment sorta just working from my head... I would greatly appreciate any crits, I'll be back with some comments on the entries so far later after I get some rest!

chubu - About the color palette, I don't know yet. There's still a lot of work ahead and things to experiment. You don't like it?
DaveO - Looking sweet. Love the tiny hands :D Hoping to see it textured soon!
evolution - That's a nice start. Maybe too many polys for this stage, but who cares? This isn't a low poly comp :D
See ya later! Today I have some client work to do before I can return to my character :(

Howdy ho!
Here's an update. Added some more stuff on the character, like the chain with the spiked ball, some drool coming out of his mouth (watermelons are juicy!) and some minor tweaks on the lips and hood. For now, I'll be keeping these features on the Executioner, unless some new idea for it pops.
Also started the scene's props. Made the stage set where he works, and the gag sign with the "Days Without No Executions".
More coming soon!
Hope you guys like the progress :)

Haha, nice stuff DaddyDoom. However I don't quite understand the spike ball thing. Is it hooked onto his belt or something? Are you planning on adding a stick or something that the chain links to and then have the stick in his belt? Anyways, that just confuses me a bit, looking forward to the finished image!
DaddyDoom
11-03-2008, 02:34 PM
Well, the idea was that the last chain piece would be fitting in a hole in his belt. But maybe I'll do some tweak on it to make it more "real".
Tnx for the comment Dave :)

DaddyDoom Thanks for the comment, I actually messed up and only posted the turbosmoothed version of the screen on accident, it was late lol, but I've updated the post with the smoothed and unsmoothed screens now so the amount of polys I'm actually working with can be seen. Your entry is coming along very nicely, I agree with DaveO that the spiked ball is kinda confusing, but other than that I really like the style and overall look, he looks a bit possessed which is amusing. Keep up the good work!
Chubu Your entry is great! The overall style is wonderful as is the expressiveness of his eyes, I still think the head is a bit off... As others have mentioned can't quite put my finger on it but it seems a little too squared, the addition of the nose under the hood was a great addition and I definitely think you are getting there and will have a great final entry!
Grafixsuz I love the concepts the executioner just makes me laugh and the child has amazing expression that would look great in 3d. Any update on which you will choose?
DaveO Good concept, modern method with a classic executioner, can't wait to see some progress on it!
Draleto Great progress so far, a few notes in the final smoothed version the bellybuttons definition gets lost an kinda just becomes an indent, that may be what you were after but thought I would note it, Also the forearms look about the same size as the shoulders which looks a bit off. Other than that great progress so far, can't wait to see more!
If I've forgotten anyone in here I apologize but I'm out of time, keep the work coming there are alot of great entries this month!

try add some details to it because it looks like a blob compared to the other elements that you did entered alot of details...

Hey Daddydoom the updates are looking good, I agree the watermelon slice isn't up to the quality of the rest of the work so I'll look forward to that update. On a small note just now read the sign in the background and the double negative of 'without no' is a bit of a rough read, if this was the effect you were going for then ignore this :) but if not you might want to look into revising it to something like 'Successive days of execution' or 'Executions served' :) just an idea but other than that the updates are coming along great!
DaddyDoom
11-03-2008, 07:53 PM
Yeah, the double negative is on purpose. But until the end I might consider changing it to something simpler. It aint over until the executioner swings :D

DaddyDoom - That is really starting to look awesome! I do have one comment though. There is a lot of very bright red in that image, so much so that I almost missed the drool coming out of his mouth. I think that changing the hat color, would fix this. It will separate the hat from the watermelon better and it will make the drool more noticeable (which I love the drool, so you gotta show it off ;))

10x daveO - im working on modeling the scene now - update soon
daddydoom i couldn't agree more with dave about the colors, i told you earlier that i am not so sure about the color pallete, but i didnt know exactly what bothered me - 10x 2 daveO - i know now. the red color is taking over your scene - if you raplace some of the red to (4 example) blue it wil do magic to your scene :)

Hey dude!
I've never used 3DMax (besides, I'm a Mac user and Max doesn't run in Macs), About 10 years back I've started to play with Bryce3D and then discovered Cinema4D about 4 years ago, and it has been love at first sight. 3DMax is surely one of the industry standards, but C4D is slowly getting its spot. Monster House, Open Season, SpiderMan3, Surf's Up and others are all movies where C4D made its magic.
capitan_popo: go for the Shark. It has WINNER written all over.
mr_lemon: the new one is cool, but the previous concept was way cooler.

Hypnogiraffe, if you are trying to learn how to model there is a very comprehensive online tutorial called "Modeling Joan of Arc" by Michel Roger. You can basically learn how to model an entire character and texture it. It may take some time to get through but you can learn a great deal from it. I should also add that its for 3ds max but the same basic concepts apply to maya. You can find it here. (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp)

well, a minor (rather big actually) set back on my side...
i have an idea about a pose but cant find the right composition yet, everything look boring to me...
this is just a simple render of my W.I.P on the BG, nothing fancy and i kinda hate the look right now, I need to make it more cartoony look so it will be in the same language as my charecter... got a lot of work this week, not sure i have time to finish the Char...
and talking about my charecter, i have a problem with the skinning... its my 1st skinning of charcter with clothes so i hope it will be ok but the problem is about the mirror mode in max. I post the problem in the "Texturing & Skinning Help" in the forum, whoever knows a thing or two about skinning in max, i really could use your help right about now.
arthurduque - the cartoonish look is good, but i have a problem with your charecter because she look too "dark" to be in cartoony enviorment... but its your call.
stroggtank - I LOVE your charcter! its look really awesome

Here's an update from me. After flying around for some time trying to get a scene I liked, finally managed to do something that pleases me. There are still some itsy-bits to retouch and some minor elements (like my trademark background pets, maybe a rat...)
Anyway, hope you like the development so far. C&C are welcome.

Okay, I like this and all, but if his old axe broke in the handle, what good is a new blade going to do? it just doesn't make sense...A big axe head is going to be 20x stronger than a razor anyways.

Oh, my God! You're right! Doesn't make sense!:haha:
The concept is "try new technologies", I don't know - really - if a giant razor blade could cut heads easelly than the axe. Well, since it's a cartoon style scene, it's NOT supposed to make sense it all. But, when I think about it, the giant razor blade is shaper (as you see the old axe is holed and with a broken edge), and could cut heads with both edges. Sorry, but that's the only explanation I can give to you, and just I told before, it's a stupid idea...
But, I'll keep it anyway...:lame:
Thanks for comment!

Josiah is right at some point, but i think it does'nt quite apply here much, in fact daddydoom and Noviski is "more correct" in this matter. It's superstylized challenge and it's stated in the rule that it's up to us on how we interpret the topic! having this kind of rule makes the challenge a lot harder and more fun.
Just got time to start modelling and here's where I'm at so far. I do hope you'll like. Still, a lot to do and the main character is still to be modelled. Please tell me what you think.

I would post some progress, but there seems to be a lack of it here. I worked for hours on a sculpt only to find that it was too high poly for my PC to work with. So I'm starting that over.
I'll try to post something tonight.
abstract
24-03-2008, 09:55 AM
nato - have u tried masking out certain areas that you want to work on this will cetainly boost performance when working with a large high poly mesh. if it is a problem with the density of the mesh after it has been exported ther are still techniques you can use to help performance. a plugin for 3d studio called polycruncher will attempt to optimize the mesh or you could export a lower level of the mesh in your sculpting package and the higher poly version as a displacement or normal map on top.
Hopefully these suggestions may have helped you find use for your sculpt, i hate having to start again!
Nato_VanDookie
24-03-2008, 02:08 PM
Thanks for the tips, but I don't really mind starting over, it needed to happen anyway. I changed my mind on the final image so my current sculpt wouldn't work anyways. And I don't have the character UV'd so I can't really normal or displace.
Here's my first sculpt:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c62/nato_vandookie/original.jpg
The way I had it divided just wasn't working. I had to sculpt the shirt on and sculpt the mask on, it was to many polys for a cartoon model. I've redivided my character in Maya and modeled the shirt and mask separate, now I can sculpt what needs it and not waste so many polys.

Nocturn8, that scene is really turning out funny :D About the background, maybe you could just duplicate and relocate that tree a few times, and then add an environment object with fog. The focus must on the characters, and all those trees are stealing the show a bit.

Nocturn8: that one was 1,060,040 tris... too much for Maya. The problem was that I'm using Maya to make the base, Mudbox to sculpt, and then zbrush to pose. But I had to connect all the pieces to pose him, and that's where maya failed me. My new one is weighs197,852 tris. But it won't be unveiled until the competition's end, don't want to ruin the surprise.

DaddyDoom: Your scene seems perfect for me, though I think you should add more detail on the executioners eyeballs.. other than that, everythings perfect.
chubu: It could work, but the first pose is funnier and the camera angles there are better, maybe it could just be me..maybe you should wait for another opinion.
arthurduque: that's looking good.
Nato_VanDookie:Wow, 1million poly... I tried to add detail to my scene using Zbrush, but as I worked on detailing the gloves, I noticed that The polycount necessary to create the whole scene would greatly increase, which isn't necessary, so I reverted back to the simple scene and maybe play with the textures. Can't wait for your final image.

Ooook... Here it is, and it's a wrap.
Modeled in Cinema4D, most textures are hand painted in Photoshop and a few are from the C4D Library with some adjustments. I made three separate renders. One for the colour plate (using GI), one for Ambient Occlusion and one for the cell render (I was going to use Sketch&Toon but the render was taking ages...). Finally, everything was composed in Photoshop, were some last elements were added (blood splats and the axe glow).
Hope you folks like it. It has been yet another learning quest, and a darn fun one :D

chubu, that short of yours is so damn cute and funny. It looks like classic clay animation, that adds a really special feel to it. Good job!

arthurduque > cool entries dude :D Like the first one better, but that pose in the second made my blast a laugh! Cool work.
abstract > Usually the exact day of the deadline is specified in the first post of the thread, and this time there nothing. But it really must be the last day of the month. Hurry and finish!

Hi Abstract, like Daddydoom said, normally the deadline of posting WIP is the last day of the month...so the WIP deadline of this month should be on 31st March, 08.
Then at 1st April, Lynette will create another thread where just only final images posted.
Roughly schedule works like this:-
1st - 8th April > Final image post (no WIP)
8th - 15th April > voting time
15th April > counting and the winners will be announced
Is that sound right, Daddydoom?
However, the exactly date will be announced again by Lynette...but it should be around above schedule! Hope this helps?
So, not much time left....hurry up!

Rightly Right Right :D!
Capitan_popo - That shark is looking so damn cool dude! Hurry and put on a scene!
Had some free time today, and decided to try out a second entry, just for the sake of fun. It's a simpler character and scene, but the result is cool I guess. Let me know what you guys think.

Cool!! Daddydoom, love the character (frankly, that 'big nose' does make me laugh as reminding me to someone hehe)
Well, I think he looks a bit to kind? Should add more 'cruel' on?

Capitan_popo Nice work. Unique from the rest.
Daddydoom I don't know why but his eyes remind me of an octopus lol.

He surely is a ugly chump. Anyway, called him Howard Glitch, The Man In The Swith.
Added the secret police hat, the mole and the twitched the eyes and the mouth to give him this very twisted grin. Here's a man that really loves his job...
Between this entry and the other, I had a whole lotta fun. Hope you folks like it :)

This is what I have been playing around with. Trying out different angles and backgrounds. I am not sure if it meets the criteria. You would have to look pretty hard to find the executioner aspect. Comments are welcome.:haha:
