how do i render like Pixar?

LOL... with alot of talent and money. :)

They use their own renderer called renderman I believe. It is for sale but I don't think it comes cheap. Even so you can recreate a similar style in MAX I'm sure.

PIXAR RenderMan
(already version 11)
I red that most of the work of Pixar is based on Maya, and they got their own software too.

... of course... there's no enough money in my pockets... :(

You gotta bear in mind a style like pixars isn't due to a renderer... it's due to the artists. All their movies/shorts have a style that can easily be recognised. Above all I think it's the lighting that gives pixar something special (not knocking any of the Ideas/Modelling/Animation/Texturing). Their work looks so warm and inviting - no wonder they've had such success with 'family' anims! I'm sure with the investment in time you could pull off something just as nice in MAX?

It's not RenderMan, because Pixar is not the only company who uses it.

The Moving Picture Company (Harry Potter) use it.
Weta Digital (Lord of the Rings) uses it.
ILM (Most other movies, including The Matrix and Star Wars, Jurassic Park, etc) have been using it since it first came out, since Pixar's founders bought the old ILM and renamed it (to Pixar of course). ILM started up again and used Pixar's renderer.

So it is not RenderMan, which means I'm sure you could get the same type of render with the Default Scanline. It is just experience.

Downup - If you search in Pixar's site somewhere they have a page where they explain (not in detail unfortunately) the various stages of their films before the production, it would be good to see how they do it, even if in general.

You have to say that Pixar is the company who develops RenderMan, so it's like open code for them. They must be specialists in that kinda rendering stuff...

I think there's a secret...

I wouldn't be suprised if they just make custom "plugin" for specific problems for each movie. I'm sure they have a large staff of people writing code all the time.
