Hi there,

I have been doing a lot of modeling tutorials and saw a lot of different techniques. Wich of these do u prefer: Spline Modeling or Box Modeling????

I do box modeling alot and didnt really tried the spline modeling yet....wich one is better/do u prefer?

Already thanx alot.

Hey Maarten,
There is no "better" method to modelling. Since I started using Max I have modelled something with all the different techniques, and I suggest you do the same. My personal choice though has to be box modelling, very easy, good results and fast.

thanx for the fast reply :)

then another lil question: Can u achieve the same results with box modeling as with spline modeling?

thanx in advance

mathematically you can compare spline and box modeling:
the spline has control points that have an influence on it.
the vertices of a low poly box model act as control points for the subdivided surface.
Seems equal to me - I like box modelling because it is easy to use and you can archieve everything you can do with splines - correct me if I'm wrong...

I agree with u rocko_granate, for me box modelling is easier as well because you can see the surface from start to end, which I find makes it easier to manipulate and see points that need to be smoothed etc.

They've got different strengths and weaknesses IMHO. For me this can depend on how I see the object being built? For example if I were to model a chess piece(pawn for example) I'd find it much quicker to draw out the profile spline and then lathe it than create an ngon and extrude? It depends on the modeller and the object you want to create! ;)

true true

but with spline modeling I dont mean the Lathe modifier but maybe that belongs to spline modeling too.
