View Full Version : The Award System

It's nearly ready! http://forums.3dtotal.com/awards.php but it's not quite ready yet! So don't go requesting awards until I say so! :)
I think we will allow backdated awards for challenge winners for any challenges started in 2008. Combine this with the awards for having 100+ posts then a lot of people should be able to request something right from the word go.
Once you have requested the award, it will be approved and will apear under your avatar within about 24-48 hours.
I would like some renders of the actual trophys these icons could represent, these will be still shown as small graphics and will be featured on the forum frontpage inbetween the two logos at the top of the page. So is anyone willing to have a go at these for me? The final renders need to be about 100 pixels tall, 75 wide with alpha channels, and shiney, gold, silver and bronze photoreal trophy versions of what these icons represent.
Many thanks
Tom

Just added a concept of what we need here http://forums.3dtotal.com/awards.php
Look at the "Threedy Top Poster - Silver" award image.
I think maybe the base could be smaller, maybe round etc, giving more room for the actual award part. The same base could then be re-used for each render.
We are so busy here and have put a lot of time into setting this up already so we really need some help with this last hurdle, as payment, we will throw in a full set of Total Textures too worth $800 and ship them to anywhere in the world!
If this means more than 1 person now wants this little job then people will have to post a single trophy render here and we will choose the artist to proceed with the full set.
Thanks!
Tom

You do something good, you get an award! It appears under your avatar (like the 2 I currently have)
There's lots of extra features like the awards page keeps a record of who has what, you can request them yourself from this page and it auto PM's us, go to the awards page (http://forums.3dtotal.com/awards.php)and it will come a lot clearer.
You can't sell them on ebay afterwards.

So, for example... anyone who got first, second or third place in the Stylized Challenges will managed to get an award?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but it's out of curiosity.

I'll give the trophies are try Tom, i'll post a test render of a gold trophy in a little while :)
I'd imagine with all those texture cd's on offer I won't be alone lol, but I've wanted all of those cd's for ages now and because i'm a mod I can't win them anymore, I've gotta try at least :)

Correct, this applies for all future challenges and we will backdate awards for challenges that started in 2008 only. You can apply for them (by clicking 'request award' on the awards page) but not yet! when we say go, you can all bombard us then!

CG, it aint bad, but it needs some work, Im gonna be blunt here, hope that's cool...
The base is ugly, the gold texture doesnt look like real gold, and it needs the pyramid corners modelled in too, a bit more like the logo at the top.

Same goes for anyone else too, if you all post your best example then I will pick a winner in about 4 days time. This winnner must then be able to produce the whole set in a few days after this, so dont enter if you havent got the time to finish the job!

I'm liking this award system.
I think the gold and the bronze looks very similiar. If side by side, one can still distinguish between the two. However, when by itself, it's confusing. Anyway just my though.

Actually, I'd say a mix between Gold and Bronze 3 is more like Gold.
Bronze 2 looks like bronze

I guess so...lets wait and see!
Models looking good Marty!
Tom
Marty, are you using vray?
I think you should head for something closer to the pic below, I can post the settings if you want me too.
Also, I really like the actual models of the trophies - but I think the base takes a lot away. Perhaps try and stay away from a square base, the models you made are smooth or have rounded edges - the abrupt angles of the base breaks up the nice flow you have going on. Also, if you made the base smaller, the render of the actual trophy model could be bigger in the size limit.
Keep up the good work :)
Here are some metal examples: bronze, silver, gold
I'm not sure if you need this, but I'll post it anyway...
Here's an example of how I did the bronze material. It was done with the free light version of VRay, but I imagine the full version has similar reflection parameters...?
The Gold is similar, take the brown in the falloff and make it a little more yellow, make the side a mustard yellow. The silver has white in the front, gray on the side of the falloff.
Hope this helps at least a little :)
Edit: added gold falloff below
Sent :)
As for the platinum... well, umm... try adjusting the falloff grays I guess :hmm:
I like the idea of having a base, but maybe just a simple lathe base with a glossy black material? Not sure.

Frankly Speaking, if u dont mind me saying but i am not liking that Base of the Award, maybe a rounder one could be better as noyb suggested, and in the Ultimate award, the metals strips with holes should have some difference from the Box itself, atleast thats what i think.!.

I uploaded .jpgs instead of .gifs so I had to reupload the right files... they should be there now. :) Need... sleep.... :(
Marty
The images are working now.
I think the material shows the form a bit better, but I agree they are less reflective. Try increasing the glossiness to 500 or possibly up to 1000 - maybe tomorrow if you really want to sleep :p
Just exploring potential design directions - not liking how it's looking at the moment, but I'll post it anyway :)
BTW, I'm just throwing out ideas, I don't have the time to model out an entire set :dunno:

Heh... well I just tried to stick to more of the design laid out by the icons while taking a little liberty here and there. Others seem to be going for a more stylized approach... which is cool... just not what I thought was being asked for. ;) And since I have a cool time machine that no one else has... I can just go back in time and delete my competition at any point and win by default! So it's all good. :smug:

It's a very difficult choice, all the entries have verious points that we liked the best but the winner is Real 3D, so well done to you!
We thought your materials were the best and we liked that the award section was bigger than the base and your modeling is strong too, we are very much looking forward to seeing your full set! (Which we now need as soon as poss so we can launch!)
Marty - You came in a very close second place and maybe you would like a couple of books or something too as a prize for your efforts.

Thanks.... the gold is one I borrowed from noyb... it's not my usual gold. It's a weird hybrid of a standard and vray map mixed together. My gold is something more like this:

I'm a weird hybrid alright ;P
Wait, that doesn't sound right...
It's not my usual gold either, I usually use mental ray - I should've dropped the blur on the reflection, I was just testing it on spheres. Seeing it big like that does look like it needs quite a bit more contrast. I'm still trial and erroring, 90% of the stuff I model never gets rendered.
Grenade model looks cool though :)
