View Full Version : The New SMC's - 027 - Weight for it...
Marty_McFly-3DT

1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!
Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 7th of May 2008
Subject - Scale
Scale: A weighing scale (usually just "scale" in common usage; except in Australian English where "scales" is more common) is a device for measuring the weight of an object (the gravitational attraction between the object and the Earth). Most are Spring Scales and others are just balances (that measure mass) that are calibrated to display weight, since an object's weight is directly proportional to its mass (how much material the object contains). Weighing scales are often used to measure the weight of a person, and in many industrial and commercial applications, scales are used to determine the weight of things ranging from feathers to loaded tractor-trailers. Taken from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weighing_scale)

Nearly all the previous SMC's have been judged by myself & H20 and were just waiting for Marty to review everything and then each unjudged SMC will slowly be added in the not too distant future, we cannot give a time period at the moment though as there are over 15 SMC's that we've judged and there's alot to sort out until then.

pables: Thanks dude, man, I always remember your "solar plant" with that vray light material!!! I'm having a lot of fun in modelling since I joined the challenges and it's really worth it as it really speeds up progress and really pushes you to find faster ways to model something. The comments and crits of fellow forum members is so valuable and is deeply appreciated here!

Thanks mate :) Totally agree, I joined the smcs at the...number 24, rev it up, and I also think it really speeds up the modelling process and helps to understand wich is the best way to model each object or each single part

And my 3rd entry here, this is my favourite entry i've done so far because it was a really simple model and scene but all the elements together make it look really nice in my opinion. I'm probably going to try a weight scale for the bathroom that women have that love/hate relationship with :)

Hello JajeBlade n Welcome to Threedy :)
All is good on ur entry and i think nothing is violated, so dont worry.
Although a little crit would be that cylinder on Top of ur model has too less a segments, try to place more segments on areas that the camera will focus on when it really gets close enough. thats all.
enjoy :) n Good Luck
Edit: oh and another thing...it would be nice if u show the wireframe of individual objects placed apart from each other. chow.

Agree, very good entry, modelling is so clean and well thought, also nice render!! but i have a question...2 hours rendering, is it MentalRay?
gybrus
03-05-2008, 12:35 PM
Thanks :)
It's rendered with VRay in a 1440x900 resolution on a crappy pc :P
That explains why it took so long..
,K
Everything is done in 3d Studio Max 9
Modelling time: 50 minutes
This is a portable digital scale that I use to weigh various parts of the arrows
I shoot as well as the overall weight of the arrows after I assemble them.
This model is my second and final entry into this weeks topic. It is the first
one done with the new version of Rhino that finally arrived ( v4 ) so I got to
also play with the new renderer V-Ray for the first time as well. It's a much
different animal than Mental Ray is for sure, and will take some time to get
used to it. Though the fact I no longer have to export a bazillion poly mesh
over to XSI makes it all worth while :)

I have been following this thread for ages - but as I have little knowledge of 3D, watching was all I could do. Recently I picked up an XSI License and am slowly progressing, hoping I could participate one day. Unfortunately I am over the time limit with this one. I still want to share my picture as a tribute to all the people who make me come back looking at the SMCs again and again. Thank you.
THIS IS NOT A VALID ENTRY.
If it's not ok to post - as I exceeded the time limit, please feel free to delete.

Your entry is in violation with the rules, pls update and fix it.
Your beauty render and your wireframe must be in the same picture, no bigger then 1024x768. file size must not be bigger then 195k.
And it must be uploaded to threedy using the attach feature.

ClassicGamer-3DT
07-05-2008, 12:31 PM
It is a little bit deserted yes, but this SMC ends today and a lovely new one will be up and it'll be something great too :)
Plus we've got alot of fantastic new challenges elsewhere on the site, the Speed Sculpting Challenge has caught the attention of nearly every member be it partaking or spectating.
It always slows down towards the end of a SMC.
