Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the SUPER Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, model it, and create a final 3D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 3DCreative Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the SUPER Stylised Challange however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the SUPER Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 3D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com).
There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will also be created at the end of the month. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the WIP thread by the end of the month, and then post your final image in 'VOTING' thread before the 8th June 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th June to the 15th June 2008, when the winners will be announced!

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline, as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging only.

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 3DCreative Magazine (http://www.3dcreativemag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Judging
Everyone who took part can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/3DCreative team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

Hi everybody, i am new to the forum. I want to introduce myself. My name is Eloy, I am from Chile and I am currently studing arquitecture. I am always looking at the forums cause I think that the posts are very interesting, and there are lots of very talented people. Well, i am a beginner at 3d studio (only Autocad), but i also have som photoshop knowings. I hope that I could compete at June's challenge, so as to have may for practicing on my free time. if i participate heres my idea for the scene. the owners has left for a few days, theres a sign on the chain link fence reading beware of dog. theres some bloog on the grass and theres a leash and chain with no dog. theres a giant carnivorios plant who somehow grew really big and ate the dog. its just an idea.

well DD sir heres a suggestion i hope u like it. : change the tail sticking out to its tounge and write SD initials in the collar below (it sure would be a scooby snack this time lol but scooby himself is being yummed)

Hi aby arty, the brief is open to your own interpretation of "Carnivorous Plant", so it does therefore need to be a plant that eats meat.;) If you want to turn it into a creature-type creation then please give it a try, but be careful to make sure that you do stick to the original brief - which is the whole challenge! :)

Got some free time so i decided to participate in this challange.

Idea: Plant is trying to lure closer his prey(a bug of some sort) like that deep water fish with a ligh on its forehead.

Well, fortunately my baby girl got a lot better from the fever, but since I'm home confined, managed to spend some time playing around with textures.
Before someone comes in and accuses me "I'm going to fast" :). I'm not rushing. I'm just doodling and moving along while having fun, as always.
As you can see, I've decided to go for aby arty's suggestion, and used the ScoobyDoo theme. Found a really nice 3D reference of the character online and copied the collar the best I could. Tnx again for the input aby!!!
I'm considering to add some more details to the plant, like a creepy tongue licking the lips or something :)

when the stylized animal challenge of the monkey started, it was the time that i need to present my idea for my final project at school. i had several including the one i actually did, altough it was in the original idea a baby bear - which i replaced in the monkey. :)

Good work so far everybody. I can see we have newbies around, so, a warm welcome to them all :D
Here's a small update from me. Been doing some studies on Displacement (as you might have seen in Honki's thread and Simple Renders thread), so, did some improvement on the textures. It's now more slimy and organic, which I think fits the character well.

New developments... Added a couple of "arms" and we now know that the plant is actually addicted to the SuperDuper Plant Fertlizer!

DD - i think you should lower the angle of your camera,
and make the red liquid more clear by moving the arm that below him further,
just to make the silluete of the charecter cleaner.

mies - look nice - will look better after you decide a concept for the scene -

yes, you can, but i think its more important that the charecter of yours will say what you thinking in the design itself, not in the bubble

Draleto - Man thats a nice design for a plant! although i am not sure the brick wall on the BG helps the overall picture.
maybe desaturated it or replaceing it for a cleaner texture, whould make the plant stand out.

DD - yes of couse i know its w.i.p - that why i suggested that now instead after you post your final image :) .
and i thought this is your camera angle because of my own habbits: after design the charecter - i always position the camera as a 1st step.
well anyway, cant wait to see it finished :p

DD - i still need you should lower even more the camera angle... and i think you should try to desaturate the wooden floor becuse the blood doenst stand out from it becuase the colors too close to each other.

So, after following some wise suggestions, here's a new update.
Here's what changed since last WIP:
- Camera angle lowered a bit.
- Added a streamline of blood down the tongue. Also darkened and reduced the specularity of the blood texture a bit.
- Added the newspaper cover on the left pilar.

That's pretty much it for now... Hope you guys like it :)

i disagree with ryvick,
in the wanted poster you definitly should put a diffrent angle of the plant.

and one last thing: the shadows are all grainy...
its probobly because its just a test render but dont forget to fix it a little in the final :)

The grainy shadows on the wall are due to the noise map of the wall texture combined with the GI render. Maybe I can reduce the noise intensity a bit, because honestly, it's freakin me out a bit too.
As for the poster, I'll see what I can do. I kinda like the nonsense aspect of it, like ryvick said, but let's see.It's always hard to please everybody, and we have to make choices right?

DaddyDoom: looking sweet!!! this is definitly another top-three entry. for my taste, the tongue is a bit too shiny, plastic-like. anyway, great work!

I started working on this, and in order to better help me learn Zbrush, I'm going for a more sinister look.

I wanted the stalk to look more fleshy, and skin/tendon like. I kinda modeled it after a chicken foot. And that's about as far as i've gotten. I'm also gonna add leaves, either two for arms or ~ 3 or 4 along the back like a stegosaurus.

Please critique/comment.

The stalk looks pretty cool. As you said, very gnarly and tendon like. The leaves around the "neck" need to be refined I think, they're too tick and stiff, but I believe you already thought of it, and are on your way to fix that :)

well most people do first the uvw layout and texturing and then the posing or riggin. because then u can use the uvw of both sides (wich would be more or less the same). I usely do the same but this time i couldnt resist to see how it would react to rigging part so i did it in a diferent order. since im keeping him in the same pose as i started the modeling i can also unwrap him after it. im not posing or saving any animation in the same file. btw great work guys.

It think it´s pretty obvious, that it´s a worm-arette. The only thing that comes to my mind would be, that the worm is actually burning. But then, you wouldn´t recognize it as a worm.

Well, I'm NOT going to say that Blender is stronger than Maya or Max, but I will say the good things about it:
- it's Open-Source , and free of course
- the interface is actually really great and fluid, people who are used to Maya or Max hate it because they are used to those interfaces. In Blender you can split any window and have as many windows as you like.
- I worked with Max for a while and didn't like it's interface ( just a personal thing ), maybe because I was used to the "fluid" interface of Blender.

- Blender is being developed very fast and you can download the new stuff anytime you want.

and last but not least, just download it and try it, u have nothing to lose :) (be patient though, just give the interface some time to get used to.... I learned the basics of blender in just a week )

Hi :haha: , great progress everyone :haha: , well here goes my sketch , the plant is singing in a casino and the ants and bugs dance with her :dance: (not a dancing banana , lol ) , I hope you like the concept , the 3D final image will be even more enhanced in concept , the Software that would be used is Blender , and Gimp , and Z-Brush might be used as well

PS :- i'm thinking of another things like dancing mushrooms and still ones on her head and under her feet :dance:

been thinking of enhancing the concept today

the ants tied the plant body and stems with the microphone cord , [look at those naughty ants] , and i will make the ants very naughty , swing the cord in the air and jump over it ... in the corner , another ant is setting on the near speaker and cleans her teeth with one of the plant's teeth and looking into the camera and laugh , chairs scattered all over the place , sand scattered around the plant's pot , lotza of dancing ants [couples] and other things ...

... i do have some suggestions:

ha-jassar - amazing work man, but i think you should darken the point were all branches are connected.

daniela blanco - nice going, showing great progress. i think you should try playing with the colors of your plant and the leaf he is sitting on.
because its the same color, its hard to define the plant in the overall image.

3dguro - the green spotlight you've put there look a little wierd. maybe try to change it so we wont actually see the light itself
but only the light cone (if you put the light from above for example).
also i think the reflection are a little too hard and in the front of the stage, on the floor, there is a white spot that maybe you should tone down a bit, or maybe remove it completly
because you cant see the connecting point between the stage and the floor (it make its kind of "floating"... i am not sure if you undrstand what i am saying
but i think the most thing that misses me at the white spot is the shadow that show me the stage and the floor are touching. hope it helps a little...

Tweaked the scene a bit, changed the blood a bit. All bits and bits.
I think I'll leave the blood thick. It looks more expressive and less gore this way. This is a cartoon image after all.

Ok... Somebody slap me hard on the ass with a wooden spoon plz.
I just found out that I've accidently erased the folder with all my recent 3D related stuff, challenges, etc. Lucky enough that last month I've installed a second hard drive, and the other one still had some stuff in, like the Executioner challenge, the Caveman challenge, etc. But the Carnivore Plant folder and my first Matte Painting challenge files were erased. If I can't recover it, I will use my last WIP file and consider it my final. Hopefully I wont win anything and so I won't have to try to redo it all again lol.
I'm trying to recover these files with FileSalvage, let's see if I'm successful.

Tnx for the support guys. I didn't manage to recover the 3D folder, which really busted the end of my day. I'm the culprit of my own stupidity, because when I've selected a folder on the desktop to delete, I've must selected the other one along accidently. It was not a machine failure, because as you know (or should), Macs don't fail :D (at least with more than 10 years using it).
I've recovered an old folder from the other drive (lucky I hadn't formated it yet), but all the Carnivore Plant files are gone, along with the Matte Painting Challenge files and my first ZBrush attempts. I will use my last WIP shot as my final image, and will just add it the titles and so. As I said, hopefully I don't win anything this time, and I wont have to redo it all again for the making-of.
Again, tnx for your support and kind words people. It means a lot to me.

This is the aftermath of a tree being rudely awakened by a Lumberjack. And, man, trees are a pain.

concept: It is "Show & Tell" at school, with the items being pets. A kid brings his new plant that is alive as his pet. It is recess and everyone is outside. The image will be of the plant with the rest of the pets missing. If I have time I might add a tutle or one pet left scared.

3dguro - the green spotlight you've put there look a little wierd. maybe try to change it so we wont actually see the light itself
but only the light cone (if you put the light from above for example).
