I can see you're using Zb2 :)
Where the heck is the Brushes pallete? I cant locate it in the menus, and the side bar does not feature it...
Sorry for all the silly questions, I'm really feeling out of the water here :S

Woaa nice work everybody
haaaa... i've been sitting in class for 4 hours thinking about how i could improve my orc. I'm addicted. its all your fault! and yay i received my first award.. for posting :D haha

omnicypher did you texture in zbrush? is that possible to change colors in certain areas in mudbox too? How would you guys go on about building a low poly around the highpoly? I always have this problem that the normal map baking is really weird. Does the lowpoly have to encage the entire highpoly?

At least in Zbrush you can bake a normal map from the high poly object you're working on onto the low poly version of the same model without having to create a new low poly mesh. It would surprise me if that wasn't possible in Mudbox too.

NOTE: That only works well if the model has clean UV info. Models with overlapping UV information or no UV information will not work as well in ZBrush.

This is very true. I didn't do it one the orc head since it's not a texturing challenge, but I'll add UVs for the next competition in case anyone want to texture it as well. Afterwards.

Mindblade- Since Knut told me that about my model as well - since the eye's are not part of the mesh - for a final entry you have to remove the eye's or else it won't be considered as an entry (disqualifiyed) - else it's a nice model.

Well i'm just blown away by this SMC, the talant that's in this one thread is just staggering.

I don't know how you guys do it, it's both astonishing and wonderful to see so many members jumping on board with this.

To say that this thread has been successful would be a massive understatement.

Well done to all who've entered for far and i'm very happy to sit back and watch you very talanted members sculpt away.

Absolutely brilliant stuff guys :)

Kind Regards

The current version of Mudbox doesn't have any texturing features.Well, you could use Freeze,Mask and Select brushes but I don't think blue, red and yellow are the best colors for orcs =D Mudbox 2.0 will have the texturing,though...

Mindblade: hehe relax, you aren't disqualified...yet :D Seriously though,he looks a bit freaky without the eyes. Why not make another one? ;)

power3d: Good stuff :) The rabbit lip is kinda funny :D

Welcome to you Armians. Again another completely different take on the orc subject. I really am amazed by the fantastic range we are getting here. :D

no problem at all, I thought i have seen some spheres some posts behind.. but it aint a problem! this makes things even more fun =]

A few pages back I give a short description of how I handle not using spheres and still get eye balls. I'll see if I can cough up a link.

I'll do better than a link, I'll just repost it:

What I did for the last head I made was to use the smooth brush in the area already setup as an eye socket. I then used the inflate tool on that area, followed by a lower powered application of the smooth tool again, followed by Ryan Kingslien's Dam_Standard brush that he gave away at ZBrush Central. I used that brush to cut into the ball the eyelid shapes (I could have used the standard brush instead though). I then used the inflate tool on the eyelid outline I drew, making sure the eyelids looked like they were separate from the eye. I then pinched the gap between the eyelid and eye to bring everything back together. Finally, I applied one more application of the smooth brush on a low setting over the entire thing (eye socket and ball).

Not as great as using spheres but it works in a pinch.

So that's one way of dealing with the problem.

omnicypher

funkdelic: that style is amazing! i like everything about it except the spikes on the neck.

neokyubi: yeah, i textured it in zbrush, but i havent used mudbox, so im not sure how it handles texturing. everything ive seen come out of mudbox has been the same nutral beige wax color, but that might just be the default material, like the red wax of zbrush.

Good lookin` orc indeed, Emeth. That hood looks like an extracted mesh and I think that`s against the rules. You can just sculpt it on the existing mesh if you have enough polys.

i hate to be a stick in the mud...but the really nice looking ones.....arn't they using multi tools?...i read some where in the beginning that some one was beeing told off for adding a piercing or something?
anywaysss......

anyway as a little headsup towards the new zbrush users......if you use the standards sphere in zbrush or any other imported mesh where more than 4 polys get together...after subdividing that a few times you start to get a gap in your mesh because of to many poly lines beeing bunched up...same goes for triangles....it turns bad...you can easily hide it by pinching it but it will bite you in the butt somewhere down the line.
have fun

That is correct, no extra mesh of any kind is allowed. As stated in the rules, this will lead to disqualification.

Reminder:
Don't forget to post your final sculpts in the Final Submissions (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=58459) thread, and use the forum's file attachment function for displaying your images

Doesn't look like an extracted mesh necessarily. It could just be masked off, and then inflated. :)

Its easy to mask out an area and inflate the cloth, so its very likely that its all one mesh, but i think he might have gone into zbrush at the end for the sub tools. anyway its a beautiful model, great work mate.

You might consider asking for a polyframe/wireframe shot with the final submission, with zbrush at least you can see if there was any extra sub-tools used and original base mesh. I don't know if mudbox has an equivalent feature though.

guys come on gimme some suggestion and critics, no problem to be harsh really, I prefer a good critic instead of no comments at all ;P

omnicypher
08-05-2008, 08:17 PM
funkdelic: its looking good, if you want some critics here goes:
the eyebrows could be more furrowed, theres usually a diagonal crease pointing towards the nose when someones angry. the chin might be able to use a bit more definition. the scar across the lip looks ok, but usually scars stick out instead of sink in. the moles on the forehead look good, but their placement seems very uniform. the ears could use more detail on the inside, possibly based on an animal or human reference. if you took a large standard brush. you could make those eyes a little more round. maybe you could trim some of that excess skin behind the ears, and the neck could use some detail. great looking model, keep up the good sculpting!

thats the only problem with speed competitions, many people wont critique when someone posts finished work, even though comments definitly help for future attempts. i wish people would point out my artistic flaws more often, as it really speeds up the learning process.

Thanx man :)

Precisely what I was going for. The "human" nose makes the face too common, and the corpse nose a lot of people here use works only with a thin character, so I needed something that would go more with the bulky look I was going for, and suddenly it occurred to me that a pig or a warthog where good references to steal features from :)

By the way, I really like your "smug" characters :D

I was just thinking this thread is a great reference catalog for many people, from people who just do this for fun (like me) to anyone in gaming and animation industries.
How Blizzard would have loved access to a concept design database like this one when they where coming up with the Warcraft original game :D

omnicypher
08-05-2008, 09:14 PM
that would be an interesting way to run a game company, just post a 3d competition on a site like this, and buy the winners models for use in your game, then all you need is to find a forum that deals with programming, start a competition there for all the source code bits you need, and it might just be the cheapest way to develop a decent game... if you could find startup investors, a great game concept, and a publisher, you could get rich!

this is probably why blizzard has a fan art competition from time to time, the internet is a great place to outsource ideas from.

it turns out it wasnt zbrushes fault that it was crashing when trying to export the quicktime format, it was the quicktime player. open quicktime and go to "edit>preferences>quicktime preferences>advanced" then switch the video option from "directx" to "safe mode". now you should be able to make turn tables and timelapse videos in zbrush without a problem!

kazmamurat: I really love the skin work on your orc. There is a certain subtlety about it that really makes it feel authentic. I've found in my own work that it's really easy to get carried away with alphas and as a result I get this sort of "stamped" look, which is why I haven't used any alphas for skin detailing on my own entries. I don't know if you used alphas to achieve your look, but whatever your technique is it really sells the model. I also like the expression you gave him. Great job overall, possibly my favorite entry so far (that's a hard call with so many great entries!)

use the clay brush in default and modifyed a lot to build the face structures and muslces.

this one was a quick doodle, about 1 hr and 10 min.. but still I liked it..

oh, if possible, I would like to ask you guys to go to my sketchbook blog and take a look at all the 7 orc heads and give a opinion about wich one I should submit as the final entry.

Thanks dude. If only my computer was a bit more pokey, I might have been able to go up to 8 SubDs. Is everyone else getting only 7, or is it just me? :)

Decided to join in on this one. I'm pretty fresh to Zbrush, really just tinkered with it so far, so i'm still learning the ropes. The rest of the submissions have been really inspiring.

This is about 50 minutes in. Still having issues with the teeth and gums object, not sure how to sculpt and manipulate them without dropping the main object.

In specs terms, what does a computer need to reach up 8SubD and still manage to work?

DeadlyFreeze
10-05-2008, 08:30 AM
At lvl 8 thats like 6.6million points your going either need to starting doing HD divisions via GeometryHD, or crank your MaxPolyPerMesh to like 10 (Preferences > mem). Unless you have 4gigs though it will probably just blow up on you.

I can get it on my 2gig machine but it isn't fun to work with.

Hi guys,

Great work Aleks, like usual

here is my first wip, 90 minutes so far. Probably wont get time to refine it.

Tnx DeadlyFreeze!
I asked it out of curiosity. I'm still trying to figure the basics of ZBrush. I'm on a G5 2,5/ 4GB RAM Mac (no Intel), so I had to get a ZB2 demo, since the ZB3 only runs on Intel Macs.

These entries are going crazier everytime I step in here... Amazing...

Ok, here is my sculpt. Sculpted in Mudbox for 1 hour. Not that I have a chanse against so many good people here so far, but it's the first challenge, so I though "what the hell, it's nice practice". I might finnish this later, if I got the time.

Great work everyone,
I hope I finish on time, if i don't spend the first 2:50 trying to stop the teeth coming through the face.

Hi all

I had to have just one last go, i got a bit stuck on this one and wasted a lot of time, so I didn't manage to refine or put any small details in. i wanted to make something fun and the idea was to have him staring at a bug on his nose but i ran out of time and had to change it to a big spot.

I hope you all like him, this comp has been great fun and I'm looking forward to the next one. there have been some great entries at all levels and its nice to see so many approaches to the same thing. unlike a lot of other forums, 3d total seems to be a great place for people new to 3d to learn new skills and work flows without coming up against the usual elitist attitude i have seen on other sites . Great stuff and well done to the staff for coming up with this idea.

crimson king: thats the very reason i stuck with threedy, i came here as a newb and everyone was all about helping each other learn, while at other sites, all the work in progress is split into different forums, so if your not already great, you probably wont get that many replys or help from others. ive looked into polycount and game artisans, but in the end, i still have a warm fuzzy feeling for threedy.

Budello onboard!

I REALLY like this formula, everyone can find 3 hours to participate! Great contest.

Here it is my entry: not impressive as much of the works I'm seeing, but no problem, I'm here to learn...so, may I ask a question?

Ready?

HOW IN THE HELL YOU GUYS DO THOSE PERFECT CONICAL TEETHS? :D

Here is my entry, with his disgusting teeths.

Crimson King: nice idea! Love the concept!

I've got 40 minutes left for final touches on this guy.Any suggestions?

Little adjustements on sternocleidomastoideus (the muscle that start under the ear), on the side views he looks like he's smiling, so I would fix the side of his mouth;then, put some pores and imperfections on the the skin and nothing more.
Really good sculpt, too! :D
