Nice work Otas32 you skin texture looks great and i wouldnt worry about the future i think you good now.
The only crit i have is the texture on the helmet i would tone it down a bit so its smoother that will creat a nice contrast between the skin and armour.

Macku: I like the one with hair better. I'd submit that one in the final entry thread.
bgen: That wallpaper's gonna be huge. :) I'll see about it once we've got everyone submitting their work in the final submissions thread. Thanks for the tip.

Freespace - it's just a thought, how about making a huge wallpaper with all heads submitted and name it threedy's 3d-orctal or suthing like that. ?? i think that would be cool.

Macku- the hairy one, definetely! Great model, my favorite in this challenge by far. The only crits would be the neck and the alck of definition in some areas of the hair, not enough polys, I know.

You're very right! And thank you for the motivation, your work is of my favourites here, so positive feedback from you is VERY motivating! :)
About the texture contrast I don't know if I could do it. It would probably take me less than 5 minutes to smooth it out (the time I have left for the 3 hours), but I already submitted it to the Final Submissions thread :( So I'm guessing it would be against the rules to change it. Freespace-3DT? is it allowed?
Also, I'm thinking that even though in this single color surface the texturing may seem too constant, once different types of surface refraction, coloring and so forth where added, these normal maps would simply add richness to the model.
I'm saying this not to refute your suggestion, but more like a question. You see, I've never gotten that far with an organic, Zbrushed sculpted model. My experience in texture mapping is limited to objects on 3dsmax rendering with Vray. Up to now all I'm doing is learning the sculpting tools of Zbrush, later on I'll get into normal mapping and exporting back to 3ds Max for rendering.

hi guys, my first participation on a threedy comp...
decided to join in...2h40 WIP
still deciding on taking it a bit further or not.
to keep a clean looking orc ? or to rough him up a bit ? hair ? no hair ?
what do you think ?
Freespace-3DT
11-05-2008, 07:04 PM
Rough him up!
omnicypher
11-05-2008, 07:46 PM
with an orc, its usually always good to rough him up a bit, although a clean look does usually showcase the sculpting skills better. it also depends on game style, if it looks like its going into a kids game, keep it clean, if its a more mature game, high detail and realism usually work better.

Hmm, not sure if we have to post them here as well as the finals thread.
Done in blender (determined to learn it before v2.5) in 2 hours 20 minutes.
Had a hard time adding skin details and things like that so I left them off.

I've been a lot busy since the last time i've been in a 3dtotal challenge. But after two years of making my personal movie, i'm quite happy to enter this one. Sculpting always impressed me.
After trying Mudbox, Silo and Zbrush, I choose the last one. My first 3d Sculpting  . I hope you will like it. Done in 2h50m in Zbrush.
Like always in 3dtotal, challenger are very talented.
I'm impatient to see what we will have to sculpt next time.

Hi, I am a new member of this forum.
I saw the challenge in the 3dtotal frontpage and I really wanted to give it a try.
There is some really awsome sculpt in this challenge, really inspiring.
Here is my contribution to the challenge. An orc inspired by some of warhammer artwork.
Sculpted in 3hours in Zbrush.

Ahhh, a warhammer orc. That's the stuff. Welcome aboard Shuma. Nice to see the vaguest ever choice for a superhero beat 'em up to making an appearance. :D he he.

some crazy a** stuff here. touched zbrush once many many moons ago and thought it was copout modeling tool for those who cant model in a 3D package like maya or max. (ignorance on my part) i think i have to get off my lazy but, stop play video games and get my hands on zbrush. sick man. some really sick work here.

My most dangerous looking Orc up to now. :D
I already submitted my Final Submission, did this one just for fun (about 2.30 H)
This King of Orcs (or Trolls if you will) lives in the bushes, hence his name as Bush Orc.
He's very dangerous, because he looks harmless enough, but he'll devour anything or anyone he can get his filthy claws on.
If he can't find a good excuse to come after you, he'll make one up. The most important thing is getting everything he can out of your back yard and then say he was liberating your entrails from your tirany.
Very nasty monster, hopefully the world will someday be rid of him.

I tried to sculpt a clean mean orc, but it ended up looking kinda like Hellboy / Wolverine with the hair. And now... he really doesnt' even look like an Orc. Too bad didn't have time to do textures. Anyhow, here is my piece after 2:30..

I usually use either Silo or ZBrush. This time, I used ZBrush. Was pretty quick. About 2 hours (a little less but...whatever).
I hope you guys like and thanks for the kind words!
Just a question; how did you make those perfect conical teeths?
I'm going mad about it.

Just a question; how did you make those perfect conical teeths?

You can mask the area where those teeth are going to be,ivert the mask and simply use the move tool to extrude that unmasked area. When the model is pretty dense (more than 1 mil polys) you can use the smooth tool on the teeth to make them look...smooth.I said more than 1 mils of polygons because if the teeth are "low poly" then the smooth brush will smooth out the teeth themselves and not those rough details around them.

no sub tools allowed ? even it u divide the given mesh into a sub tool ?

Yup, for this one that was the rule, the only sub-tools were the teeth. Don't worry. Different rules next comp. :)

jajaj funny.!!
That's some very tough judging trying to narrow down to only three.
With such a large scope of very impressive submissions, it was extremely
difficult to narrow down to three that really stood out.
Thought came across my head just now on a REALLLLY cool prize for a future
sculpting challenge. . . . :)
A 3D Print from the new model printing service !
The quality in the first challenge alone shows me many of the submissions
would look outstanding sitting on a desk somewhere :)

if we submit our entry early, can we change it later? i had planned on adding another 30 minutes or an hour to my final sculpt, but plans changed and i became very busy lately. i didnt want to submit it early, come up with somthing better, and not be able to change it. but im fine with the results, i learned alot about sculpting heads and messing with proportions and thats what counts.
some ideas for next time:
we could sculpt a hand, or a pair of pants, or a whole character, if given 4 hours and a solid base mesh.

omnicypher, once a Final entry is submitted in the Final Entry thread, you can't change your mind about it. Best way to do it, in my opinion, would be to submit it about 2 days before deadline. :)

Guess there is nothing wrong with changing the last entry. But it would've been nice if it was the same model with just some things tweaked and not a completely different one.
As for ideas,I had similar ones in mind and we will probably discuss them with the team.Later... ;)

I just had a long hard look at the contestants to give my votes so I thought I'd drop a few lines here while it's still fresh in my mind. I selected ten from which I chose my winning three so here's a few words about them.
The "other" seven (in no particular order)
CrabPeople: Nice one! You got a proper orcy look to this guy. Can't argue with that lower jaw. You have the big bold shapes in this sculpt, the very fine crisp details and the whole range in between.
D@niel: Nice level of realism to this one. That set of teeth looks nasty
Freesupra: It's the helmet on this one really. Good example of how to take it one step further by adding something apart from the orc itself; clothes, armour, whatever. The cry to the sky also lifts above the level of a frontal mug shot.
kazmamurat: Great level of realism to the facial sculpt and skin detailing on this one.
Macku: In this one it's the whole facial expression, that angry stare and the clenched jaw. Good job.
Sathe: It's the collar on this one I like, looks tight! Together with the helmet there's another example of how the extra effort on the gear paid off.
Topher: This one has good realism, from the design to the pose.
so to the actual winners...
3rd - Jramauri: This one lacked some of the detailing that other entries had but it came out as one of my top three because the foundation of a really good sculpt is still there. He's a big bad orc with proper wargear and a fearsome face. This one says "Orc warlord" like no other entry in the competition.
2nd - MonteCristo: Again, might lack some of the detail work that other pieces had but the design of this one was just great. That is one proper mouse hat. This piece has character. Great job on the costume.
1st - CrimsonKing: This became my winner because it was strong in all areas really. The quality of the sculpt is good in details big and small, no areas left unattended. The face has real character with that sideways angry look and the grin. He's really oozing of orcish viciousness this one. Great job, lot of soul topped of with careful craftsmanship.
Would love to hear anyone's opinions on mine, equally interesting why you might not have picked it as what you liked about it.
All in all great fun! I hope I will be able to throw myself into another one of these challenges soon again.
