Low Poly Mini Contest #22
Subject – Washed-Up Super Hero / Good guy gone bad
ALL WIPS AND CONCEPTS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THIS THREAD.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g129/DJBiGToE/SuperHeroes.jpg
art by forum member John 'Roc' Upchurch (http://johnnyrocwell.blogspot.com/)
Guide Lines:
We all know how cool super heroes are, when they are at their prime. But what would superman look like if he were 87 years old, or Batman, 50 pounds over weight. Better yet, what would The Joker look like as a good guy?
That’s the topic of this competition. Take a super hero from any form of media, TV, Comics, Internet, Movies, Talk Shows, whatever. You need to make your super hero past their prime, or you can make them the opposite of what we are use to seeing them as. You can even do a bad guy and show what they would look like as a good guy. You have a chance to really think outside the box with this one. Example: Spiderman is a dead girl, that’s right, I said a Gender Bended Zombified Spiderman. Can it get any better? I think not.
Have Fun!
Judging: 3 categories of judging will apply. 10 points possible for each:
Concept - How well your idea fits the topic
Model – How well the geometry is structured, how well it looks like the subject.
Texture – How well the texture space has been used, and how well the texture is painted/applied.
DUE DATE: June 15th: a Sunday, 5 weeks and a few days from today! 11:59 pm GMT - SUNDAY
Idea:
Pick a super hero, any super hero and show the world what they would look like past their prime, or as a bad guy. You have 5,000 Tris, use them as you see fit.
Poly limit:
5,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 5,000 Tri Limit. Remember, the limit tells you where to stop, there is no minimum, so use as much of the limit as you see fit.
Textures:
(1) 1024 x 1024 texture. This means (1) 1024 for color, (1) 1024 for bump, (1) 1024 for normal, (1) 1024 opacity, so on and so forth. You can chop it up into whatever you want, but you still need to go all out in your texture.
Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.
Prizes:(only available with 6 or more final entries)
1st Place gets the following:
- 12 month subscription to the 2DCreative magazine
- 12 month subscription to the 3DCreative magazine
2nd Place gets the following:
- 12 month subscription to the 3DCreative magazine
3rd Place gets the following:
- 6 month subscription to the 3DCreative magazine
Final Pictures:
Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):
- 1 x Winning pose shot. This image should consist of your character(s) in some sort of a pose.
- 1 x Beauty shot of your character(s). Feel free to put multiple angles of your character(s) or just one big version or your character(s) on this page. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you.
- 1 x wire frame shot of your character(s). Feel free to put multiple wire frame shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you. Must have polycount included.
- 1 x texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.
- Concept Sheet (What your Hero looked like)
A Final Entry Thread will be up and waiting around the end of the third week/beginning of fourth week. Don’t forget to submit your work by posting it in the final thread.
Good luck everyone!

A medievil or wildwest Punisher might look quite cool, or how about a paraplegic Wally West in a sports wheelchair? (the fat flash has been done before).
How about a very pro-active version of Captain America - all Storming Normaned up and toting state of the art bang bang technology.
Or even though its a bit ackneyed a Victor Von Doom 'Iron Man' hero of the Earth.

Someday, even Ghost Rider will have to trade in his hog for a mobility scooter.

Well the torn trousers are because all the changing from normal to hulk mode for many years. This isnt the final concept, just playing around to see what looks best.
My creativity is kinda limited on this one cos i didnt grow up with superheroe comics or cartoons. :grr:

I love your idea Warlock! I can't wait to see what you can do with it. If I can make a suggestion: make his flames only slightly blown back so as to indicate the lack of speed. His posture and scooter make it look like is moving slowly, but the flames you have now make it look like is going faster, they kind of contradict each other...just a thought.

i just got an idea i couldnt leave alone. its arthur. not the king, he's a wuss. not, its Arthur the Moth. (from the Tick...)
i thought of two basic ways to go. a fat version, but more so and evil, or a skinny muscular "gollum"-version.
i went for gollum. im gonna do the ortho's next. please, dont pay too much attention to the crappy anatomy. its pretty much my first ""posed" character. be gentle :D

Hey guys, I'm entering this competition with Funkdelic. I'm doing the concept, he's gonna do the low poly model. This is what we have:
In a not so far future, all mutants and bad guys have died or retired. Logan, that don't became old easily needed a job to survive on this new world without super heroes..so he decided to do what he does the best: cut meat! He became a X-Butcher.
Hope you like the concept.

Firehazurd, Detachable Toe, Mr.T - Thanks Guys, I'm glad you're liking it so far.
Nato_VanDookie - Thanks. I'll probably make the flames less blown back as you suggested, it's also been suggested make smaller flames, sort of like he's fading out, and I might tinker with some blue/white flames as well rather than red/orange to kind of simulate white hair.
Yoyoman - That drawings pretty sweet, even if just for kicks.
Jramauri - That's an awesome concept. Great style. can't wait to see what Funkdelic does with it in 3d, should be pretty cool.
Lots of good ideas floating around in here, looks like its gonna be shaping up into a good competition.

Finially got a concept image going...My imagination far outstrips my drawing capabilities, so my concept is rather tame especially compared to everyone else's concepts. Still, here is Tapeworm Jim.
He'll be dirtied up with bile and what-not on the 3d model (he is a tapeworm after all), and might receive a suppository inspired rocket to scoot around on...not sure yet.

Fenixy thats a realy nice picture, but are you aware there is a female wolvie now? X 23, she has 2 arm claws and a foot claw, as a womans forearms werent broad enough for the 3 claw arrangement. That said shes only a teenagehalf clone so a full blown female wovlie is nice to see. Any chance of a more native american look to her face, like oldschool wolvie had? And for my money I d say add a little curve into the blades, he always looked best with the broad curved blades IMO.

14-05-2008, 10:36 AM
Anyway...here's some progress on the concept (I'm pretty much calling it final), and I've started blocking in the model.
@RobThomson: Ironman is looking good so far, he has a nice solid feel to him. Bats is looking kinda messy to me at the moment. Nice stuff so far, keep it up.
@Steamtrooper: Hmm, I tried making his head more tapered, couldn't really make it look right until it looked too much like Earthworm Jim. So I'm leaving it be I think. Besides, now I figure i can keep his 'hair' (feelers). Thanks for the suggestions though.
@Fenixy: He's not exactly sad as such, more sick and tired of his job. Surely you'd be a bit down after doing a tapeworm's job :p
@poopipe: Haha, nasty. I love it :haha: I just envisioned him as a tapeworm, capable of wreaking extra havok on your digestive system because of his super-suit and opposable thumbs.

Rob Thompson - Im not sure if its the link or my pc but I got dropped back into safety 8bit mode when I followed it? Just letting you know in case it is the link.
Worked for me... @RobThomson, the models are fine, but they are probably too close to the current designs to really score you bonus creativity points. Hopefully the textures will sort that out, but I see this more as a pseudo-characature style contest than a straight forward aging theme
With that in mind, I think I will be entering. I've got half an idea for a teenage Supergirl which I need to flesh out. Traditionally she is tall, thin and blonde, so I'm thinking shorter, breast implanted, goth/punk style... Should be fun if I can get it right

I'm not familiar with this superhero but it looks interesting. Where is this from?
Here's my rough modeling pass for my Supergirl idea. It's a very quick model, so the topology and some body parts aren't that great, hence me not showing them! This is more for style and proportions

Maybe your right, it probably won't be comic or ironic in the same way yours all are, I'm not really looking to score points though. I just think it will look cool :haha:.
I think the humour will be in seeing a realistic looking image of the washed up heroes. and the poses they pull, and also the actions in the final scene.
nice start by the way

I'm gonna create "The Riddler," as a high school bus driver. He's older and his riddling skills have gone down the drain. That's why he's a bus driver rather than a philosophy teacher.
He passes his time by challenging his kids with riddles but they are always one step ahead of him.
I'm gonna create a concept design with a similar style to Donald Soffritti's characters.

Jim's finally got a face, so it's almost time for texturing, just a bit of refinement in places left to do. Currently 4150-ish tris.
Also a quick question, are double sided faces counted as 1 or 2 tris? Not that it's important for Jim, but I figure I might as well ask for future reference.
Victorfornes: Great painting, no critiques from me. Love the integration of his glasses into the original suit design.

Finally finished the concept for him. Half of him is of futuristic (white and ugly Part), still his vicious part. Just like the original character, where he was a friend of Bruce Wayne, and a foe of batman.
And very much morally and mentally strong,(black part) to fight the evil world outside.
So, he has got the strange story of fighting of himself or to make himself inclined towards the goodness of him as he has got a split personality.

Hey all, I'm going to pretty much call the mesh final now.
It's sitting at 4996 tris, due to a fair amount of bevelling on some sharp edges to help the future normal map. Is this normal practise? Or is there a way to have normal maps work well with sharp edges?
I like the concept.fun and graet.Best wishes.
poopipe
18-05-2008, 08:03 AM
detachable toe...
You can get rid of the bevels after generating the normal map - it should look fine in most places, the only time it really falls down is at seams which by the look of your mesh shouldn't be a problem.

I think you might be talking about Rogue, she steals powers and memories from people on contact, OR at least she used to before becoming de-powered.
Jean was Pheonix or Marvel girl - a powerfull telekine and telepath.
The fat nightcrawler was seen in the second xmen film - played by the tubby actor Alan Cummings - but could be a nice idea to see a real tubby nightcrawler stuffing his face with sourcraut and sausages (no offense meant to germans).

Funkdelic - That's looking great, you've really nailed the style of the concept art I think, well done. I think you could use a few of those last 10 tris to make the strings where his apron ties in the back, that's the only thing that seems to be missing right now.
Obibok - Looks like a nice start for Orion. Glad to see someone using Blender. Keep at it.
Detachable Toe - Looking really solid so far, mesh looks great, clean and efficient.
Perversonality - Lookin' good, I like the style/proportions you've chosen, and I think the mesh looks good as well.
Poopipe - Concept looks solid, and the mesh looks well on its way.
Simple_Minded - Looks like you've got some awesome concept art to work from, and it looks like you've captured the style well enough in what you've done so far, looking good.
Update - Modeled a fair skull, modeled a rather rubbish attempt at the rest of the rider, deleted said rider, modeled the scooter, and promptly ran outta triangles. Since then, I've been reclaiming tris from the scooter and the skull, they currently reside at 3552 tris for the pair, and I'd imagine I can reclaim some more if need be. [Blue dude and flames are still filler.]
Not sure whether I should go cartoony or realistic with the rider/textures, any thoughts?

Great stuff all! Everything is looking awesome.
@Perversonality: I'm digging the model in general, and I love the the dress frills. Maybe the boots are a bit messy, and it seems to me that her eyebrow is fairly prominent.
@Simple_minded: Great start to a great concept. Keep it going
@lordpisang: Nice concept, and a okay start to your model, but I can't help but think your polys could be used better. At the moment the legs are 6 sided, but then you have some very tightly packed polygons on his neck, inner chest and face, that seem like they're not all needed.
@Warlock 279: Ha, the riders looking great. The scooter looks fine in my opinion, and my vote is for realistic texturing on it. Thanks for the comment.
@poopipe: Your model is looking great, nice and clean flow to it.
@ThEoNeAnDoNlY: Heh, first time I've been asked for a tutorial, but unfortunately there isn't much to my 'technique'. I don't know how unwrapping works in other packages, but I imagine that the process isn't too different between Blender and other programs.
Basically I put a seam down the length of the worm, and used blenders unwrap. This left me with a fairly dodgy tapering triangle shaped section on my unwrap, however it didn't give me any overlapping faces. From there I basically scaled the loops (?) so they laid straight horizontally and vertically, then adjusted the size of the faces pretty much individually until it looked right. Whether it is right or not though...

its funny you say that, just the other day, I was trying to make a simple one segment cut and Max crashed on me. Then everytime I would reload max, open the file, a select the object I was trying to add the cut to, Max would shut down on me.

just after i posted that my 64 bit version went all spanish which was a bit frightening - seems to have calmed down though.
I haven't found a solid fix to the 32 bit problems yet beyond collapsing everything, shutting down outlook (the first thing I blame for any software problems) hoping, and swearing like a trooper everytime it blows up on me. (it wasn't video drivers btw.) I lost UI settings and the main toolbar when the window was maximised too which was odd.
something wrongi think?
aaanyway - excuses aside I did some more
apart from filling in the missing bits I'll pretty much leave the base mesh alone at this juncture as I want to zbrush it before tidying up the looping. It's a workflow that seems to do wonders for some people so I might as well give it a rag..

same thing with me, was trying to add a symmetry modifier, but max crashed, everytime i reload this file and try to add the symmetry again max crashs...
some kind of curse, i dont know.. we better take care!
poopipe: really cool shape so far man, I would just use a little less polygons in her hand, but its really coming out really cool!
so here are some of the high poly version, I´m kinda of happy with the results so far, still some things to fix and to finish!

he's great - perhaps he needs bigger feet though, he looks kind of top heavy on those little ones
The hands ... you're absolutely right. My head is still stuck in the pre-normal map days (this will be my 3rd normal mapped character) so I'm inclined to over-detail areas like hands and the trunk of the body as I'm just not used to where I can cut polys.
Thats kind of why I'm wanting to go into zbrush as early as possible on this one and put the time in optimising and mapping after I've sculpted

Hello to all of you! This is my first post here, but I'm reading the forum from several years. I don't know why I didn't register since now.
I didn't think about taking part in this chalenge, but I have talked with a friend of mine obout it. She drew a nice concept of Marv from Sin City as a skiny girl and I really like it. I hope you like it too. Now I have no choise, I must do it in 3d. Here it is:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8729/marvra0.jpg
For those, who don't remember who is Marv, here is a pic from the comics.

The model is now on the stage "base mesh" so nothing unusual, I'll post when I have something more interesting to show.

This is my entry for this comp its only a quick sketch of the idea. Its going to be superman in this 60's remembering the days he didnt need his zimmer frame to get around. The scene is set in the living room and super man is lying on a table with a fan facing him. This reminds him of the days he was flying. ;P I know i draw like a preschooler but you get the idea. Best of like to the rest of the entry's.

Victorfornes - Looks like your Spiderman is off to a good start. Nice concept btw.

Koimizu - Nice concept. Looking forward to seeing you get that started in 3d.

aawww mate... the hair is doing my head in :) - I've made 3 full attempts at it and i still can't figure out how to build it in one piece and still keep some semblance of sensible poly flow in there.
I'm tempted to move on and tackle some other areas but if I fail on the hair this is ruined anyway so I'm going to have to struggle through.
I'm going to crack open my bottle of port and have a poke at it now I think.
damn, I see that here without normalmaps + zbrush you(me) haven`t got any chances...:grr:
you're wrong for two reasons.
1: you don't need zbrush/mudbox to create normal maps.
2: if you make something great without normal maps it's going to do better than something mediocre with normal maps.
If I wasn't in dire need of zbrush practice I'd ditch the normal maps on this one just to prove a point but since I am, I won't :p
Chung Wong
25-05-2008, 10:42 PM
Just alpha map the hair. No matter what, the poly flow of the hair is going to be slightly messy. A bit like the chains you did. Show us your 3 attempts. I bet there isn't much wrong with it at all
Looking nice Funkdelic.

it's the rollers/curler things that have been giving me trouble - I think I'm just going to sculpt them up as separate objects. It'll probably work out fine.
so, yeah.
I've opted for the fast/easy approach on the hair in the end - it's blocked out and I've made my decision so I took the opportunity to build a rough bra and some boots instead of messing with hair.
not a great deal of progress but at least I'm moving again ..

Funkdelic - That's the kinda love I was talking on the hair, looks great. Textures are lookin' really good so far as well, especially the face. He's coming along really well. A wisp or two of smoke of the end of that cigar perhaps?
Obibok - Looking good, you could really put some more details in if you wanted, particularly the muscles etc. The blender sculpt tools seem really solid from what I've seen. Keep at it.
koimizu - Coming along nicely. For the light bulb on his chest you might consider a "touch light" [Google knows what I mean if you don't] it'd be almost perfect in terms of look and shape.
lordpisang - Looks like a much improved use of your allotted polygons. Looks like a better flow and you've filled out the shapes a lot better I think.
Victorfornes - Looks good, I can't wait to see you get some textures on that. The head sculpt looks awesome.
sinOk_raw - Nice concept, looking forward to seeing you get started on the model, times a running out.
simple_minded - Looks good to me, I think his calves could maybe be a little bigger or defined tho.
damn, I see that here without normalmaps + zbrush you(me) haven`t got any chances...:grr:
...not true at all. Like poopipe said, if you can whip up a great model and throw down some great textures, not having normals won't kill you, might take a little bit more work, but it'll make you all that much better for it when you do use normal maps. If it makes you feel any better, I won't be using a normal map. :)
Poopipe - Yep, looks good. I think that's how I'd have done the hair had it been my problem to solve, may not be the "prettiest" from a modeling stand point, but should hold up fine when all is said and done.
Update from me, it would seem I've been a bit negligent when it comes to updating, guess I got a little wrapped up in working on it. 5000 tris on the nose at the moment, not that its difficult to hit when you've got a bunch of planes tho. :p
Unless you guys are really sold on the bunny slippers, I think I'm gonna pull the ears off them [that sounds kinda mean], make them regular slippers, and that would give 52 tris to use for some more fire planes.
