Ok, this is my first go at a MPC, so, sorry for anything that might not be according to the rules.
Here's a first shot, made during yesterday afternoon and today morning. The concept is pretty literal to the challenge theme, since I've build up a real graveyard in space:
"Millions of capsule-coffins orbit around Elysium, an arid planet in the outskirts of the Solar System, whose gaseous ethereal like stratosphere/ionosphere gained it the name of Ethereal Fields. In Greek mythology, Elysium was a section of the Underworld. The Elysian fields, or sometimes Elysian plains, were the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous. It is associated with the Christian Heaven (Wikipedia quote). After the ultimate holocaust, which nearly caused Humanity's demise, the survivors chose this remote area of space for the dead's home for eternity."

The planet, capsules and particles were rendered in Cinema4D, using images of various sources to build up the textures (made in Photoshop). The renders were then composed, along with the background, light effects, etc.

I'm not sure if this is the final image or not. If you guys have any suggestions, go ahead!
Hope you like it :)

it's good as concept, keep it up :) dont forget we need photorealism so consider light, DOF and textures ;) Think this should be a scene from star trek or somthing...we need to fell we are there

Got it Suirebit-3DT! It's a tricky subject though. It's easier when you're working with "reality" and just have to manipulate reference pix to suit the topic. In this case, due to the lack of "real" pix, all is harder to get.
And this is my first matte, expect nothing extraordinary ;)
Anyway, here's a second option. The background image is a real photo taken from the space shuttle, and I've added those fractal effects to give some extra sci-fi tone.
Changed the capsules textures for a more simple design, which I think works better than the previous.

Hope you guys like it :)

Both concepts are very pretty DD, I'm liking the angle on the second one... the concept is indeed very good. great job dude.

Daddy, MP isn't only about photo collage ;)

you dont need real world pictures to sell the illusion of reality. All you need is real light system, real dof and decent detail. Original MP were painted on glass...

Look here : http://nameless-designer.deviantart.com/art/Terminal-Velocity-53525285 it's still and illustration and not fully realistic but it's a good point about light and maybe dof...and only done with 3D & painting techniques.

PS: Drop that fractal fuzzyness

Tnx dude. I really appreciate all the input and suggestions.
When you talk about "real light system" you mean GI?

Tnx!

don't think only in 3d terms (which yes, means GI or renderosity sollutions), real light systems means that you portray the scene with accurate light and shadow, whatever way (2d paint, filters, 3d). The first 2 things that trick the eye into believing something is real is Light and Shapes+DOF. only after that brain processes texture ;)

So be an illusionist ;)

I'll try :)

Tnx again dude!

Here's another wip shot.
I think it looks a bit better now.
Hope you like the development.

yes better. now think to that small orange 'moon'...kindof too round and perfect for it's size compared to the big planet...either you move it further away, either you turn it into an asteorid

Tnx jonas :) But I'm still a long way from getting this top notch, at the same level as the rest of the guys that usually enter these challenges.
I'm stuffed to my neck with client work this week, so I don't know if I'll manage to work on this...
Let's see.

Aw cmon daddydoom. Your way too humble. Those things below your avatar on the other hand says something differentlly.

Just do your best dude! I have faith in you... I too might join the challenge but not officially though, I'll probablly do that on a later date... :D

Tnx man.
I have no other choice but being honestly humble. That list on my signature was possible to a series of fortunate events, which I see as self-learning and therefore I'm happy and somehow proud of it, specially when dwelling among this army of talented artists.
Hope to see your stuff soon dude :)

Ok... changed the orange moon to an asteroid orbiting the main planet.

hey daddydoom your certainly a man of many talents! really loving the initial concept work, superb style.

your wip's for the final matte are also looking very promising. the planet surface is looking very convincing, and the capsules look great also (what an awesome place to be buried lol). my only suggestions would be to maybe add a little texture detail on the orange asteroid. it certainly looks better not completely sphericle, though is looking a little 'blobby' in some of the deformations, also the lense flare maybe detrating from the realism rather than adding to it...

really great work here man, and I want a copy of the initial concept to use as a wallpaper :P

This is great! It would be cool if one of the containers was damaged (a meteor or what ever) and you could see a mummified corpse hanging out into space.

still too spherical...more noise into the asteroid please :)

Wow, I hadn't noticed these comments...
As I said in another thread, I've lost my latest 3D files including the matte painting... So I had to post my last WIP shot as the final entry.
Tnx for all the inputs. I'll try a better development next time.
