View Full Version : Speed Sculpt Challenge - 002 - Manimal (1 week Extension)
wow i havn't check for few hours and so many great entryies.
spaceboy412 - styleswise is your entry one of my top 5.
funkdelic - that owl is great :). Reminds me of a old greek coin i once saw somewhere.
vongn - nice clean sculpt reminds me of a female satyr a little.
so i had a little time during classes @ university.
Now i stand @ 1hour and 30min (+5 /-5).
Will put him a side till the evning today, then i got 2hrs spare time.
Here is Wifebeater Bullfrog
I tried making this guy morph into a bird of some sort, with the beak coming out through his mouth and tear the skin apart but I kinda failed :P I think I'll start over
Too much rake!

Wow, a lot of great stuff here!
i'd love to see a list of some of the tools y'all used (i.e. clay, flatten, rake brush in Zbrush etc.) just so i can get a little bit of a heads up on what tools we should be looking at to improve.

All the posts here have been amazing and very inspiring!!
I only have the 30day demo of ZBrush 3 and this is my second ever sculpt using it.
This challenge forces me to use it before my 30 days are up.
I've only spent 12 minutes roughing out the base (dead tired today but had to get started!) but I wanted to get in before another Hammerhead emerged.
I'm loving this challenge 'cos most of these scuplts remind me of the bad guys out of the comics or horror movies I grew up with.
My sculpt doesn't have much to comment on yet but any crits would be appreciated!!

There's a front, side & back view.
It's my first post on this forum so I may have done something wrong.

So instead of going to bed as I should I had a shower and kept on sculpting.
Up to 45mins on this guy now. I seem to be a bit slower than some but I'm suprised how quickly these things can be achieved in ZBrush. Loving that software!!
Here's Hammerhead with some refining, extra divisions, eyes and a bit more of the look I was after.
How should I make his teeth?? Any tricks of the trade anyones keen to share? I know I could use radial symmetry but not sure if there's any other quick ways.

For making his teeth :
use the move tool on a low subdivion to ensure placement of the polys where the teeth will be.
in a high subdivion paint a mask where you want each tooth to be, ctrl click outside the model to invert the mask, switch to move tool and pull those teeth out and up!
subdivide the model more and work on sculpting them.
another way, is to use the clay brush and just layer on clay until the teeth are high enough to cut the backs away and shape properly. Key is being in a high enough subdivion. which is why it's best to get all proportions and large modeling details down before moving onto a higher subdivision.

guhhh, i love that seal, i think the way you integrated the clothes as part of the manimals theme is great!
aby arty, thanks i was surprised myself, i think its because i started it not really trying, i figured i would just play until i had to go feed my rabbits. sadly though i went back to work somemore on it afterwards and lost 30min of more work due to a crash. :(
i never watched naruto, but i do love anime.
montecristo-3dt, thanks i just figured its all about keeping the eyes human, hopefully i won't mess it up to much trying to make it a little more giraffee like.
grassetti, that is a sweet rhino
freesupra, very nice camel it almost makes me want to give up
vongon, this image is really beautiful, i love the subtlety of the facial features and the horns.
this is so much fun and so many people are doing great work, i'm having a lot of fun, thanks.

Hello all,

I thought i'd post some WIP's this time around. Heres WIP1 of my WildBoarMan. 45 mins so far.
Here is my 2nd final - total of 3hr. 52min (+5/+5).
I gave my best here, and learned a lot by the way.
I am really intrested what tools the pros use mainly in Zbrush or Mudbox whatever applictaions.

I have a question, are we allowed to use the geometry however we want, what i mean is could i use the teeth geometry for something other than teeth. along the same lines, could i use one of the eyes for something other than eyes, but keep one eye as an eye? i know this may be bending the rules and understand if its not allowed.
MonteCristo
15-05-2008, 05:46 PM
I think the teeth could be used as something else appropriate, say a tongue or something, but definitely not the eyes. Keep the eyes as eyes.

spaceboy, it's part of the mesh, the teeth are not a subtool so whatever you do with them shouldn't break any rules.. I pushed mine into the middle of the mesh becuase I didn't need it, and It always broke through.
Cool stuff again kaz, you like these long neck animals eh?
MonteCristo
15-05-2008, 06:41 PM
Yeah ok. seeing as they tecnically aren't subtools, you get free rein on the teeth. :)

spaceboy412
15-05-2008, 07:55 PM
nice oliver, something seems weird to me about the edge of the lower lip, like its too thin or something near the corners.
This is when folks really start getting their models tweaked out and
nearing completion. There are some damn sharp entries and once again
it will make judging this very difficult due to the overall quality.
Welcome aboard Spaceboy :) If I only got one person from the Z-Brush
forums to come over and play then I can live with that. Some of these
folks NEED professional level competition as there is no way on Earth I
can possibly give it to them :P
Especially like the giraffe you're starting with.

hey iv got a prolly noobish q about zbrush, i want to extrude a part of my mesh but the only way i know of doing this is using the extract option in sub tools but that would be against the rules because you cant have extra meshes is that right if so how can i extrude parts of the mesh like i would in max or maya?

abstract, any sort of extude, even the one in zbrush will change your geometry, thereby disqualifying you. i suggest just trying to move as many polys to the area you want to extrude and then either use the move, nudge, or snakehook brushes.
for future reference, the extrude in zbrush is done by using the edgeloop function in tool: geometry: edgeloop

Second work in progress shot . Now at 3:30, this challenge should come with a warning 'make sure to use a wacom pen with a rubber grip', this intous 2 pen is killing my thumb all the sculpting.
just a quick question to you all... how many saves do you make during the 4 hours sculpting? roughly.
so far i'm at 25 with this one.

okay heres a quick update, i did lose momentum after that crash last night and found it hard to even open zbrush today. i did some quick tests, i'm really not sure which direction to go as far as the clothing, let me know what you think. I'm thinking "out of africa" using that as reference.
did both of these in about 20 minutes, using the claybrush, falloffsharp, std brushes, also used a custom lace alpha. i still have much work to do on the head, horns and body.
75min so far.
oh the hat is actually made from the top teeth geometry, you can see the bottom teeth floating out there tool.
Crimson King
15-05-2008, 09:33 PM
I end up with between 20 and 40 saves, zbrush has a nasty habit of crashing just when you have nailed some cool detail.
oliver1 Cool pig man
JHarford your dude is looking cool as, the only crit i have is that the bottom teeth look to sharp i think they would look better with a flat blunt top to them.
Spaceboy nice work with the teeth i saw the hat and shouted SUBTOOL then i read you post.

yeah,
I'm kind of getting my head round what some of the buttons do now but I think my poor computer's beginning to say no to all the polys
this accounts for another 40 minutes or so - I'll probably lose the remaining couple of hours trying to figure out how to make those nice crispy details everyone seems to be putting in.
If I could only be bothered to sit through a tutorial video or two....

So everyone, I reckon this one can run a little. We've had a think about this and have decided to let these run for two weeks, with no pauses. That means we now have a new deadline of the 27th May. At which point Competition 3 will start, and so will voting for this one. This way we'll always have something to be getting on with. :D
I've updated page 1 to reflect these changes (also written in bright red).
Awww. Mann......
It's great this challenge has gotten an extension. I've been looking at some of the sculpts so far and some of them are great.
I was originally thinking of doing a Rhino, but the one done by grassetti is bad ass.
So this is my try at creating a mid tranformation from the man into Elephant Man.

Decided to go for a Meerkat Manimal, at least for this first effort. Trying to find a balance between human anatomy and the animal.
I'm beginning to figure out a bit of a workflow for myself... things are coming easier this time. Starting to rough in the general fur flow. I'll be really happy if i can have this sculpt detailed, and maybe start working to make it more expressive.

Another 45mins so takes me up to 1 hour 30mins. I downloaded some shark reference pics today which have helped a bit.
I'm finding the throat area around the adam's apple a bit odd, does anyone else agree. Think I need to add in gills next.
Any other criticism would be appreciated particularly on anatomy. What's the best way to achieve a realistic skin texture? An overall alpha map, hand painted in pores or another alternative? I've seen some amazing skin detail on forums but don't know what process achieves this.

Thought Id try some hair, found lots of ways not to do it but few that im happy with yet.
kazmamurat - Im realy loving your work, love the eyes especially in the merwoman, plus I love the litheness and stoney quality in all your work.
In a sentence or two which tool, what kinda alpha and which stroke did you find most usefull in doing the hair? Im using the standard or Layer brush/ on continous with lazymouse on with either a rake or spotted pattern alpha, but this is day one of doing hair for me so wondered about yours and others hair/fur techniques.
Aby - maybe if we bug Kazmamurat enough hell share his secrets?
K thought Id have a crack at a more cute version - this is the Little Girl who dreamt she was a tiger...
115486
well i threw away my idea with the monkey since showing him human, well is hard and i suck @ stylized things anyhow.
Hour an a Half in - this time the workflow the tools everything was brilliant.
I think it's because also i like to watch the pr0s here - soo much 2 learn.
My Half Womanplatypus
comment are welcomed. will work on her sunday. i never get to learn law :) thx threedy, thx 2 you and zbrush i don't get to learn ;P:wave:
Macku, your ram guy is superb, probably my favourite so far.
Steamtrooper, that looks sweet. I thought of doing a child also... as for the hair, maybe you could try simplifying it? Instead of going in for ultimate detail, sculpt the clumps and blocks/chunks, then go over that with a fine rake-like brush to add the strands detail.
And of course kazmamurat I love your style.
A bit more messing around, figured out how to set up new lighting that follows the camera. The sculpt itself is pretty messed up though so I rather think I'll just polish it up sometime and do another with the knowledge I've gained. Maybe I'll use more reference next time too, was lazy for no good reason this time.
edit: bgen: Wow!
Boy, am I slow.....
I would like to get some help as to how to move the teeth geometry so that I can use it as the horn.
Or what would be a better way of getting the horn to come out of the geometry.
This is two hours into it.
I would like to get some feed-back.

Steamtrooper that is looking really nice, its very cute, i found that using the rake brush and adjusting the alpha curve works well for some types of hair. but i perfer using the std brush with a very sharp point, through alpha and focal shift, with the lazy mouse, painting hair by hair, its tedious but i like the look of it more.

I chose to work with a horse, and tried to leave as much man features on the face as possible, that's why the shaped of the nose and eyes specially. And of course placement of the ears.
About the crin, I went more for the greek helmet kind of look, as I did with the leather armor.

some small updates, i decided to erase the eyelashes until later, fixed the ears and formed the scarf to be more historically acurate. need to bring some more life back into the collar. and add the hair and hints of fur.
i've lost the model 4 times to crashes and one accidental delete, this really kills my enthusiasm. around 2hrs right now.
someone had said they liked her better without clothes, i can agree but really am feeling more inspired to try to base it on something a little more meaningful, whatever helps you through right?
any input would be welcome.

The same material should be used for everything, if I'm not mistaken. Texturing is not allowed in this competition.
correct me if I'm wrong mods..
JHarford: Not sure if your comment about texturing came about because of my last post regarding getting the skin texture. If it was, then I think I worded my post badly. What I was actually referring to wasn't texturing it was getting all the lovely pores and blemishes sculpted into my model to make it's skin more realistic. Is there an easy technique to add these to the skin of my model was the real question I meant to ask.
Pables: loving your ratman!! Amazing stuff for your first sculpt. One thing you could do is make the lips a little less symmetrical. At the moment the lumps and bumps are exactly the same on both sides. Could maybe do this to one of the eyes too. Just a suggestion (and one I have to apply to my own sculpt too!).

Hey, great progress so far but i don't get it. A lot of the sculpt entry doesn't meet the specification of the challenge rules. In the rule it is clearly describe "transform into an anthropomorphic vision of frenzied destruction and kill everyone in the room". From what I understand from it, only some of you guys sculpt to that specification accurately. Like example Oliver01, Crimson King, Porkpie Samurai model are among the few that can be made as a good example.
Armor? why are they be armor involved? All the sudden a breast plates armor emerge from your inner body as you transform to this manimal creature? Come on people be realistic about the rules and specification of this challenge.
I know some of you guys might hate me for this but I am simply just telling the truth about what is happening here. Clearly the objective of this challenge 02 has gone astray.
I am hoping that our moderator and other experience sculptor would do a good job into guiding and keeping the contestant into the correct alignment of this challenge objectives.
It's a good challenge, don't let it astray.

Here we go people, my Giraffe Woman so far. Total amount of time spent on it till now: aproximativly 90 minutes. Almost 40 minutes of that time was spent on adding the eyes since I'm a total nube with zbrush and do most of the things by instinct or rushing to google when I hit a wall. Many thanks to my friends here that pointed me into the right direction when I hit the mask and posing issue.
Now, just to justify the things Yuzrass said:
-after the transformation my giraffe woman just started to bash around with her head and neck, killing all the people around her, while screaming in agony and ripping her clothes out (that explains the exposed breasts and the dizzy look on her face).

I didn't really know how much more to fine tune a lot of details on the larger segments. So I just slightly textured them. I only added more detail on the face.
What really consumed more time was creating the segments on the low poly stage.

About this rule statement "We've all been there, it's a normal night at the cinema, the movie's in full swing and you're just about to reach your arm around the neck of your main squeeze, when all of a sudden you transform into an anthropomorphic vision of frenzied destruction and kill everyone in the room. In this comp we want you to take the base mesh provided and sculpt your visualisation of such a transformation, in any way or fashion you deem fit. Realistic, fantasy, stylized, anything goes. Pick whatever animal you like too, wolf, horse, puma, slender loris..."
Now I'm not sure weather we suppose to follow according to this situation described or is it just like one of the example our character should be in?
I think MonteCristo should explain more about it. Because what Omnicypher is doing is about a marine getting infected by virus is a completely different story than what MonteCristo has mention above.
Please clarify things up.

What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpts you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic."

What's the deal Yuzrass??
First you demonstrate a total lack of understanding an introduction in the manner of prose to create a funny environment where WE as creatures transform and go crazy in our anthropomorphic state. That intro is NOT part of the actual rules.
In regards to what you call "texturing". All I did was apply a material. That is NOT the same as texturing. As you can see, it's the same ALL OVER the creature.
Then I just apply Zbrush "best" render display to then press "ctrl + shift + Print Screen" to capture what Zbrush is showing me.
And finally, with no post prosessing I just paste the captures together in Photoshop in order to avoid uploading 5 images instead of just the one.
Why don't you just limit yourself to actually DOING some sculpting and stop harassing others to try to push them out of the way. If anyone can call attention to the rules it's the moderators of the challenge, that's all.
No one else is doing anything else but simply critiquing or admiring the other's work. You should try and learn some of that attitude...

Here we go... :(
Ok, with regards to this rule stuff. Please tone it down. It is true, texturing is not allowed, the rules stated under the section called Rules are pretty clear about what you can and can't do. But then again, technically no one in this thread is entering yet, so you can't technically break that rule here. Any comments that point out a breach are really only advisory. However, there is a line that can be crossed there, and if you cross it, say by posting something completely off-topic, you'll probably find that your message has been deleted. Same would happen to someone posting a picture of a boat here.
in any way or fashion you deem fit. Realistic, fantasy, stylized, anything goes. Pick whatever animal you like too, wolf, horse, puma, slender loris...
I think this is fairly straight-forward. If I had seen anything that was out of line by now I would have said so. If you want armour have armour. I don't care about all that. The main point is to create a man and animal hybrid. The brief is broad, the scenario added is merely to capture the flavour of it, which from what I've seen is being adhered to just fine.
Right, anyway, I have to go and move house. If anyone has any more questions over the next couple of days, please contact one of the other mods directly. If this turns into a flame war, I'm going to scream. Thanks for your co-operation.

Hey, Otas32. I have no intention to accuse you of applying texture to you model or what so ever. From the looks of it I know you are apply material or shader to you model which is fine but the fact where you say "slightly textured them". Make me think that you might use a brief polypainting to you model. I just don't want you or anybody get disqualify for it thats all. I am sorry if my statement make you angry.
About all that in the cinema scenario that MonteCristo mention. If it was just and example and has nothing to do with the main guideline then I am of joy. coz I didn't start making any sculpt for this challenge becoz i am not clear on that part of the rules. Yes it is common for competitions to be overly stict sometimes. This is a fun challenge. We want for its participants to have a lot of freedom, whilst at the same time targetting them in a general direction -- giving them a puzzle to solve, which in itself helps to form good ideas. :D

-does this model have to be vicious like the intro states, on the first post in this thread?

i understand your point, but considering the way her anatomy changed, as in a longer neck, humpback, and longer arms, these things wouldn't really tear clothes as you say, just stretch them, her clothes were loose in the first place, being in hot africa and all, i had planned on adding a tear along the back seam but it proabably wouldn't even be visible anyhow. however i do plan on making a button or two having snapped. i seem to run into this issue a lot where people don't understand why i do what i do and the decisions i make behind them, i do however put much thought into it. lastly so what if shes just some woman who changed into a giraffe, as the other giraffe-girl modler said, she probably just kills everyone by knocking them and trampling.
i truly do appreciate your input, we just have different ideas about what would actually happen.
btw that is a great model Avatar, its interesting to see how we both approached the idea differently.

Emeth003- Very good sculpt, i like it, but don't you think that the dof is breaking the rule about rendering? And could you show him from other angles i really like the idea.
spaceboy412- In my opinion best concept, she's cute!
Intervain-To be honest i don't like the concept, but the execution is great!

Wow you guys,so many great entries :) The voting is gonna be really tough this time ;)
Intervain: Great to see you here and awesome work on the sculpt :)
Emeth003: The model reminds me A LOT of another model based on some comic character (Sam and .... or something like that). The hair do and expression are very similar.Maybe you were the one who made that other model? ;) Great work nevertheless.

cool thanks d@neil, I tested out the toxic paper and also this other fairly cool orange one:

Are there any constraints to what material we can use for our final images? I'm leaning towards the orange one, even tho it is a bit weird :P I guess it's recommended to use more along the lines of grey and desaturated, or does no one really care :D?

WOW!! It took me a while to get through all of those posts, but WOW pretty much sums it all up.
I can't wait to see what the judges say on this competition. Good luck to them!! ;)
Future winners, you have a lot to look forward to! I'm sure you will be ecstatic to see and feel your own models once we have grown them.
For those of you who do not win a free model, you can always purchase them for as little as $50, I’m sure all of these models will look great! They may not all be 3.5" tall, because they are pretty solid chucks of material compared to a full figurine of the same height, but I’m sure they will all look amazing even as 2-3 inch figurines.
Good luck to all of you in the future competitions as well!

Awesome updates since last I checked!
My Manimal WIP, the Cubicle Sloth! (this is for all those slow workers out there...myself included :) )
Heres some quick cheap concept comps I assembled to get the idea together and where I am in the sculpt. I couldnt stop laughing when I took a break from this guy...sloths crack me up so much lol.
So far, a little over 2 hours I think.
The suit and tie are just blocked out, but will probably be slimmer, with a lot more detail. Haha, I have decided on whether to use the regular pose, or the happy-squnity eye pose. Still a WIP.

Here's my try.
After 2 hours I came up with a female and with another 2 hours tried turning her into something catlike but I'm not sure she even looks feminine any more. I wish I had some more time to put more details but it passed much faster than I expected.
omnicypher
19-05-2008, 07:36 AM
if you pulled the bottom of the nose, mouth and chin backwards and smooth out that jawline a bit, point the nose up a bit, make the cheeks a little less wrinkley, and shrink the width of the shoulders, and maybe bring the brests up a bit, it would look more feminine. the composition is cool, it makes it look like the first 3 are about to sing.
pap87

Ok I've started on another one... Toad Man! I've gathered some reference pics, but I'm 55 minutes in so far and torn on what direction to take him. I'm feeling this sort of fat/obese form, but maybe it would be cool to twist it and make him old and wrinkly, like some kind of old wise toad ^^
Anyway I could really use some advice, here's where I'm at atm at 55 mins in:

I've given my Hammerhead a rest for a while as I kinda got to a dead end with him. Might get back to him later.
This is my new one (4th sculpt with ZBrush) and I tried making a woolen jumper for this guy as I have never tried clothes before.
Tried to get more expression on this sculpt and work with less symmetry. Idea is that he's screaming as a giant maggotlike parasite bursts from his eye socket all Alien like and eats sucks his girlfriend's brains out. Inspired by Starship Troopers!
Crits would be good, particularly any clothing pointers. Also, how can I save masks? Do I need to save them as Alphas? How do I apply UV then so this is possible?
Mike-k: love that toadman!!! Great froggy feel to the scuplt!!

I'm at about 2 and a half hours atm. A sea turtle-esque woman. had i realised how many people had done that already i'd have though of something else, but oh well.
awesome work everyone, few too many too give individual shout outs as it were. voting will be hard for this one :)
any hints where to go with this would be good, i got to this point, and have just sat in zbrush making strokes and undoing them for about 20 mins now :D (i suppose i could actually sculpt the back, that could be a plan :D)
gumby, for clothing (ignore my jumper on this, as its a bit pants), I tend to get some reference, then make it from a shaped torso. then obviously smooth it out so that its more jumper shaped, then model in the folds. For crits, I think you could do with dropping down a level or two and smoothing the face out a bit, then define the msucles a bit better. good concept tho, and a good starting implmentation, keep going at it, should be good.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2364/15686969jv7.jpg
Lythis,
I made the same mistake when I started using z-brush.
You have to save your progress as z-tools. So that they can be loaded again later so you can continue your progress.
As far as saving the document, I don't save them, at all.

@gumby- If you go to the polygroups section in the tools menu and click "auto groups" while the body subtool is active it will separate the teeth from the body and you will be able to hide them by ctrl+shift clicking on the body in the canvas. Hope that helps.
Edit: and to unhide everything quickly just ctrl+shift click on an empty part of the canvas.

while i'm in the process of trying to recover all my files over the last 6yrs from my HDD (including my giraffe girl)i'm just reading up and seeing some awesome entries.
Macku, i don't think you should be penalized for losing an hour of work due to a crash, considering you still have the model at its 3hr stage i think you should just continue on for one more hour, its only fair.
lythtis, a complicated way you could recover your model if you still have the document would be this. grab the doc as an alpha, then use the make 3d function in the alpha palette, they you will have a rough approximation of your model as a tool. then load up the contests base mesh and append it and divide a few times, use the move tool to get it to be the shape and size of your alphamesh, then use the projectall function in the subtool palette, you should set a morph target on the contest mesh before you do the projection becaue spikes may occur, once you do the projection, hit the switch button in the morph target menu, and then use the morph brush to paint in your projection detail. this is of course if you dont' wish to start anew.

Thanks paps!! I only had 2 seconds to try it out but those pesky teeth are gone. I assume it works the other way and I can hide the body and just show the teeth by repeating the process but clicking on the teeth? Wish I'd known that before I spent 2 hours sculpting ol' maggotman and affecting his teeth. Have to sleep tonight but will hopefully get back to sculpting tomorrow. Maybe those troublesome teeth will have to become more maggots. Maggots for everyone!!

Hey, some great and fun work here. I hope no-one minds me crashing the party so late but I've had some trouble trying to register for the past few days.
The Chameleon doesn't like going to the movies with girls who want to sit up the back because the hormone surge resulting from even the first hint of making out causes him to transform into an ugly beast. He especially dislikes drive-ins because of the moths.
A couple of hours in - so rusty, so slow. It's all a bit smooth and most time has been spent going back and forward trying to capture the shape and expression. I'd like to make him even more human and wonder how far I can pull him back without losing the chameleon aspect.
