here is my try at this manimal showdown. 1hour 25min. i just let it flow and had no real objective in mind. he looks like wolverine mixed with elephant man.

hi guys,so this is my first participation here...don't be too harsh with me,it's a lot of time that i don't touch a tablet (buy one 4 days ago) and i'm not good on anatomy (really have to study...),also i know that hasn't really turned out "animalish" it's just some sort of reptiloid,or at least i hope that you would recocknize something like that.let me hear your constructive crits.

Hey DiscoStew I love your fishman. Kinda like a mutant character from Nemo who has been swimming in some toxic waste.
hi!
great entries here! really liked the pieces of grassetti, jharford and crimson king!
still not happy with my piece especially the hair but time is up so here it is...finally my ram and man hybrid!
used up all the alloted time. i was watching basketball and thought it would be nice to give my model a jersey so as to give it a more human feel to its character. hope you like it.
sorry...messed up uploading d pics.
here's another try...

amazing! that jersey looks great, the only thing that bothers me is the hair in the back, it seems a bit to straight.

Here is my participation.
A woman furret, result of a genetic experiment :)
The timelapse, and the final image.
It was a real pain to do the fur by hand, and was a real time consumer, not the best subject for a speed sculpt ;)
BTW the previous works are awesome.

heres fishman at 3 hours i got the lines clean and im happy overall exept for the face which needs some more work. then ill add some fish scales with an alpha that still has to be found.
rap: really nice work on your ram an ! really diggin the shirt!
emeth: relly nice ape grunt. maybe needs a little more tweaking on the nose but on sencond thought ape noses are quite ugly mostly so maybe its just perfect
i really wish i could go higher than 2.7 million polys. to what polycounts are u all getting the mesh? i guess using hd geometry is senseless as it only exists in zbrush:hmm:
hope ill finish it today but the weather is looking pretty good outside. well see

I didn't think I'd have time for this one but here's one from me. It's 2 h 40 minutes so I'll probably spend a little more time on him. Tips welcome.
to omnicypher, cojoMan, kazmamurat, disco stew, el tintop...thanks for your replies!!! glad you liked it.
with regards to the jersey, actually that was the easiest part to do. really had a hard time pushing n pulling on the polygons for the horns n hair.
i took a jersey pic on the net, cut out some part of it which was good enough for alpha tiling. desaturated it in photoshop and adjusted the levels to enhance the dot pattern, and saved it in psd form. i went back to zbrush and made it as my alpha. tiled it using the stencil, masked out the other parts of the t-shirt model that i didn't want to have the dots on and there it is....simple but nice looking jersey look. by the way, i modeled the t-shirt first together with all the letters n numbers then masked it out before stenciling the pattern. hope this helps somebody:smug:

Here's a turn table of "Batman", I think I'm going to say this is the final.

Another hour in on the model, and i'm taking a break as my hand is cramping up. Started to use masking which really helped me get some of the shapes i wanted without destroying other areas, which is so much easier. Another step towards sculpting better in Zbrush.
I've tweaked some proportions and begun to work in the final detailing. After painting in the fur texture, i'm going to go back in and give it all a bit more volume to match its flow. To me this is more of a C.S. Lewis style Manimal... a furry creature/humanoid that talks to children that stumble upon its home.
I can envision a fable about a disobedient and arrogant British child that travels with his family through the African plains. Bored, he plays a trick on a local witchdoctor, who captures him and turns him into a meerkat to teach him a lesson.
Anyway, enough story, here's my wip:

can someone please tell me how to transpose all the subtool together??? ^^'
disco stew
22-05-2008, 02:57 PM
hi astaroth
if u are using zbrush 3.1 the easiest way to transpose multiple subtools is
the transpose master. one of the fabulous plugins from pixologic.
u can grab the plugin here http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=054270
here you will find a really simple and great video by ryan kinglien
explaining the way to use it.
http://www.pixologic.com/blogs/ryan/2007/12/07/using-transpose-master/
another way to transpose multiple subtools is the stroke menu.
u move the head with the transpose line for example.
be sure to only do 1 constant movement at a time.
then u switch to ur eyes and also go into rotate mode with them.
the same transpose line as used with the head will be visible.
now go to the stroke menu and press replay last.
now the eyes will be moved to the fitting position.

So decided to go totally mental with this one. Pretty pleased with how it went, although I reckon I could probably spend another four hours on it before I'd call it finished. Still, it has a nice sculptural feeling to it I reckon. Really enjoying learning this stuff. :D
Loving the entries so far. Such a broad range of styles.
By the way, I'm going to enter this one. But maybe I should enter the shark...?

another nice one Monte very innovative.
well i had some more time available to work on this. i'm at 3hrs20min, so i'll have to get the small detailing done quickly, thankfully though i have the right brushes and alphas to do so, its amazing how quick things can be done when you have the right tools. i have made heavy use of Brian Silva's FalloffSharp brush, they can be found at zcentral, i used this for the hair, folds, eyelids, lapels, just about everything. i think i can pull off what i want in the 40min i have left. i added a small tear to the back of the shirt as well.

Mantis, i really love your ferret woman, i love the idea of it, and the subtlety in the eyes and the fur on the face, its so gentle and makes you really empathetic, only suggestion i have is a slight hint of breasts, even an A cup.
Freespace-3DT
22-05-2008, 10:29 PM
Emeth, that's pure awesomeness. Once again, your sculpt is one of my favourites.
Monte, I never would have even imagined something like that. Were you high or somethin? :)
Mantis
23-05-2008, 12:17 AM
Great Rabbit Monte really cool pose.
Emeth your Pig is really fun I really like it.
Spaceboy thanx for the tips for the hair, I spent about more than 1h on the fur.
I used some alpha but I didn't like the result and I choose for a more sculpted feel for the hair.
That was my first attempt, with this kind of subject, I should have spent more time on it but I hit the time.
So that's my final submission.
that was a very unique way of expressing creativity monte! really liked your last piece!
would like to add how much i also liked the pieces submitted by grassetti, crimson king, intervain, emeth003, crab people, guhh and jharford to name a few.

23-05-2008, 08:28 AM
well i finally hit that 4hr mark, there are of course a few things i would still have liked to finish, but it was awesome to have a deadline and to see what i could do, even though zbrush crashed 6 times and i was in "compacting memory" hell. thanks to all for the help and the inspiration with all your great pieces. the linen texture detail i put on her shirt doesn't show up too well with these low res pictures, this is my final version. i just want to add that out of all the zbrush models i've made this is the first one that i am happy with, so thanks again for this challenge.

Freespace-3DT, thanks man i'm surprised by how well it turned out.
DaddyDoom, oh how i wish.
MonteCristo-3DT, thank you and thanks for this awesome challenge it was a lot of fun and i learned tons about my abilities and what i need to work on.
neolith, man thats creeping me out.i love that he has a beak and teeth.
MonteCristo-3dt, i cannot get your bunny out of my head, i actually own 4 bunnies and they drive me crazy, i love them though, but i feel just like that image, i get no sleep due to our oldest having to be fed hourly because of illness, your image is going to stick with me forawhile.
I know only one person is going to win and get their model printed, but there are sooooooo many awesome models here, is there anyway that maybe the top 3 could get smaller printouts? not that i expect to be one of them but it just seems a shame considering some of the great work that is here already.
iatriki, love it, what animal is it? the costume reminds me of the mutant humans from the second planet of the apes movie.

everytime i see entrys like emeth (batpig is best of the 3 entries you did) or the incredible entry by monte (real nice concept) (just mention the latest entries, there are much more i should mention *sorry*) i am really totally stunned. can't leave spaceboys giraffe (teeth/hat *yeah*) and intervain's / grassetti's entries out.
try my best to reach this level.so i hope you like mine.thank you.

el.tintop, thanks i'm not sure what you mean by "(teeth/hat *yeah*)"
anyway, your model is looking relaly good, i would suggest just adding a little more sharper detail to the hair, don't take offense but what animal is this? maybe just do a little more to define that.
el.tintop
24-05-2008, 02:45 AM
spaceboy i just ment that the idea to use the teeth to sculp an hat for the giraffe girl is good and i like how you did it.the hat is really nice.rest of the model also.
that was what i called: teeth / hat *yeah*
glad that you like my character i just started zbrushing so i practice everyday.try to work on the hair later or on monday.
i thought my character should be a kind of dog.but i know it needs some work to define it 'LOL' but i don't know what to do...i will see.

Some truly amazing entries in this contest, I am very happy I heard about this site and am proud to be a participant! I finally had a few minutes away from school projects to finish this thing up. cojo, i would suggest maybe making the small mane that goes down the back of the neck, and refining the belt, make it look more leathery, just refine your forms more, the deltoid seems a little strange to me. i only suggest these because you asked what else to do, but i think it looks good either way.
raguyarts, nice start
AndrewQ, i love the forms of this but i do not understand the tenticles, if its a whale that is. also i guess you're going for the more sexual side of giger, looking at the profile and the "snout". Honestly i like your piece but it is so unlike the actual animal that it seems more fantastical.
AndrewQ
25-05-2008, 03:42 AM
spaceboy412 : Heh, thanks for the comment! I didn't actually notice the silhouette until i was finished, i wonder what that means.... anyways, I was definatley going for "fantastical" what with the ribs and tentacles. Just tryin to be different I guess.
Also, really great job with the Giraffe girl. Definatly one of my favorites for this comp!

andrewq, thanks. you definitly did do something different, maybe you could add some barnacles to the skin. its funny cause i to have sculpted stuff only for people to say "hey that looks like a ....." whats even more funny is how i see those things so much more now in other places, ah gotta love the subconsicous.:)

Man, so much top notch sculpting here.
Here's my second try at a manimal.
I guess you could call this one a rein-man although he doesn't have too many deer features. The antlers are made with the tooth geometry.
EDIT: I forgot, 3h 45mins so far. I'll add as much detail as I can in the last 15 mins, but right now I need a rest!

Hi all,
I'm still quite a newb with this soft, so my goal was more to experiment than anything else. So, basically, I just played with the base model, I had no idea of what I was doing, so it is more a freestyle than a manimal, and it turned out to look like a budda or something.
Anyway, here it is !

You can usually tell something is Zbrush because it has shadows and fancy shaders.

D'oh!!!
I thought I had one more day on this and now won't be able to post my final 'cos I'm at work until after the entries close. Oh well, was fun to play and see all the great entries. Might post my final guy in this post anyway even though it won't be eligible for the comp.
Great work everyone!! Very inspiring!

Well here is my best shot with four hours. Been wanting to make a manimal for about a weak now but did not seem to be able to get round to it, so in the end I did a late nighter when I realised this was my last chance to enter something. Nowhere near finished but I like the piece so far, so when I next get some time I will add some skin folds in other areas of the model to blend between the sphynx head and the female anatomy better. I also plan to give her some dangly earings, a pile of rings around her neck an amulet and a princes Leah style bra, maybe also a necklace (all in great detail with subtools ;)).
Credit to the people who are able to make their sculpts look top notch and complete in four hours, I wish I was able to, good job guys.

This is my final submission, I took the entire 4 hours. Overall i'm pleased with it and the progress i've made in learning Z-brush, but there are a lot of things i'd like to change.
Definitely need to find some new brush alpha's... hand painting all the fur was painful. [my hand is still aching ;)] If anyone knows where to find some, or a good tutorial on it, i'd appreciate it!
Can't wait to find out the next challenge topic...

Hey, el.tintop. That's a great sculpt, because it has personality. I think the arm muscles are a bit too well defined, though.
Next time remember not to postpone something until the last day, because things happen ( like your internet commiting suicide when you need it most ). Come join the Supersoldier challenge, I'm sure you'll make a good sculpt.
