Here comes round two of the already much loved and soon to become astronomically popular "THE Sculpting Challenge" -- so few limitations, accept no imitations! :blah:  Alright, corny slogans aside, this comp is going to rock because this time around we're giving the winner the chance to hold their awesome work in the palm of their hand! That's right, win this sucker, and 3DTotal, along with GrowIt will provide you with a $200 Super-high detail 3D print (http://www.3dtotal.com/3dprinting/). Not bad for 4 hours work eh?

This week we're keeping things broad and straightforward, and above all, fun for everyone... With that in mind, let's get the boring bit out of the way, so we can get on with it!

Rules:

1. The competition will last two weeks, with two weeks allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting the entries -- at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, (this week's provided by forum user Crimson King! Thanks pal! :D) from which everyone will start sculpting with. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic.
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here.
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt is a shoulders and head sculpt only, do not attempt to extend this into a full-body sculpt.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging, let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt. What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpts you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc, but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "manage attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can have multiple entries, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here, and your FINAL entry in this thread.

These rules apply to everybody taking part, there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide.

Prizes
The winner will receive a $200 3D print of their character sculpt, see full details of this amazing prize here. (http://www.3dtotal.com/3dprinting/)
Our guide for preparing models for 3d printing can also be downloaded here (http://www.3dtotal.com/services/3dprinting/images/The%20Basics%20of%20Growing%203D%20Models.zip)

Time limit - 4 hours
Deadline - Tuesday May 27th, 10:00 AM GMT +0
Subject - Half-Human, Half-Animal.

We've all been there, it's a normal night at the cinema, the movie's in full swing and you're just about to reach your arm around the neck of your main squeeze, when all of a sudden you transform into an anthropomorphic vision of frenzied destruction and kill everyone in the room. In this comp we want you to take the base mesh provided and sculpt your visualisation of such a transformation, in any way or fashion you deem fit. Realistic, fantasy, stylized, anything goes. Pick whatever animal you like too, wolf, horse, puma, slender loris...

We've also given you the option of having eyes this time around, there's a separate .obj file provided or you can add eyes yourself as sub-tools (or software equivalent) but you have to pick one or the other of these options, not both.

Manimals assemble!

Just so that I understand - we're allowed to have a series of entries where we:

have a creature with eyes

OR

have a creature without eyes

but we can't have one entry with eyes and one entry without?

Bit odd if that's the case but okay by me.

Something else I wanted to understand - can we use transpose (or whatever Mudbox has that's similar) to get the model into a pose we like before sculpting? For this challenge in particular, it would be beneficial to do so. I understand that we're not allowed to rig the model but this isn't rigging so much as moving.

No Teyon its use the eyes they supplied or add ones yourself, but not both.

Tranpose does not alter the mesh it only moves its points so its perfectly fine.

Wowzers, wonderful entries already, ok come on guys somebody do a Thundercat please! I really wanna see you Zbrush/Mudbox masters create Liono or Panthro, Or Tygra, hell even Snarf! Or Mumra, Monkian, Jackalman, Slythe, Cheetara, oh heck the whole cast! lol :)

DaddyDoom, shame about you losing you're entry there, but as a newbie in the program I think you started out pretty good, better than the stuff i've been creating, I need to study anatomy and correct posture shapes etc before I try anything like this.

I'm much happier watching you brilliant and talanted artists create away :)

Keep 'em coming guys.

Not bad, but I think you can do better. The problem with this one is it has all gone a bit out of control. :) Just because you can add lumps and bumps, doesn't necessarily mean you should. These things, while seemingly random, usually have a language of their own, the scales of a lizard, the plates on a tortoise's shell, the wrinkles on a rhino's hide... etc. I reckon you should try another one and this time, keep it simple. Also the shader choice here is not a good one. I recommend MatCap Gray. It shows things nice and cleanly, and doesn't obscure them.

You have two .obj files attached in the first post of this topic, one is the head and one is the eyes.Import the eyes,go Tool>Polymesh3d,then import the head. Now go to SubTool>Append and select the eyes. The head and the eyes will now be two sepparate subtools.

Teyon
13-05-2008, 02:28 PM
This is one hour and a half in. I decided to post this version because I got it into my stupid brain to do extra detailing, so I subdivided twice more and well...my computer didn't like that idea too much. I don't know why I went two instead of one but...anyway, I think I like the clean look of this more so, there it is.

Edit:

Oh, and thanks for the kind words about the model. Nope, I have only ever sculpted teeth...out of DOVE soap....when I was 12. The only other sculpting I've ever done has been digital. I do have a comic book background though so maybe that's helping? Maybe not? I dunno. Anyway, thanks and good luck everyone! (Alex is here...you're gonna need it. lol)

Teyon: looking great dude. it's hard to portray the transformation and you're doing it really good.

Teyon
13-05-2008, 02:33 PM
In my mind, Alex is to sculpting what Frazetta is to fantasy. A master of the craft. What's even more amazing about him is that he started with real world clay and then moved to digital.

Thanks Nocturn8!

I wouldnt have thought a dragon was realy allowed in this, unless your talking about a Komodo that is. It could lead to too many mythical options being available. Id stick with a Komodo or one of those lizards with winglets that can run across small stretches of water.

Along the same lines are extinct animals viable?

LOL

You all scare me !

You all can visualize and put into practice in a matter of hours what would take me . .
well. . . . with an infinite amount of time available to me I couldn't even hope to create
something along these lines.

It's more fun to watch the thread grow and watch the progress than it is to try and
fight with Z-Brush for a few hours. :) After all, if I can't pre-visualize it, there is no
way it's ever going to become a final piece. Think I'm more of a CAD type of modeler.

I'm guessing it's why I work in IT instead of an artist related field :D

Hats off to all of you who can create such works in a short amount of time. While I
can't possibly hope to compete here, you all are definitely an inspiration to those of
us who lack the skills needed to create such art.

Don't stop there CapnMorgan, start from scratch again. Now you know the direction you want to go in...you will get there much quicker and have time for the texturing.

no progress since last update, but for those that are new to ZBrush, i've found a great link in ZBrushCentral with loads of video tutorials (needs Veoh TV though, but it's not a bad program...)

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=53087

i will admit, it's a lot easier to jump in with a bg in sculpting and a strong sense of anatomy (though mine's certainly in need of improvement imo.) but just knowing what does what and where to use it can really REALLY help speed things up. (and yes, i'm falling in love with the damn program ;) )

Iron Boot: That's pretty cool., but certainly looks more like metal, like samuri outfit. Rather than the hard scales of a reptilian.

alot of nice entrys so far, keep up the good work everyone!

someone should make a plugin for zbrush that allows morph targets to flow from one side to the other in any direction you choose, instead of changing everything all at once. the result in my mind is similar to teyons monkey man sculpt, were one side transforms first.

Awesome Pigman, Alex! Maybe some pig warts would be appropriate.

aby arty: What animal is that? I think you need to better define his shape, so that we can recognize what it is, to a degree. Also remember to respect anatomical laws, otherwise your sculpt will become pudding.

Wish this started on the weekend, since I don't have ZBrush on the computer I'm using right now. Not that I won't be able to find four hours at the end of the week to work on it, because I will. But seeing all these fantastic entries really makes me want to get started.

Out of curiosity, does the four hours need to be spent all in one go, or can you start sculpting, save and go eat dinner, and then come back and finish things off? All assuming you keep accurate note of how much time you've spent sculpting the mesh, of course.

You can, of course, take breaks. You can sculpt 2 hours today, go on holiday for 3 days, and come back to sculpt the other 2 hours.

Ya, this is true. The idea was one animal and one human, but currently, CrabPeople yours looks like a man + Boar. Not seeing much bear in there so this is ok right now. :) I would have thought with a name like yours, you'd be going for... well a cr... oh nevermind. :o

It's all quite simple.I found a picture of an anteater (aardvark) and decided to make a sculpt using that little guy as a ref.I wanted to make something more realistic at first but went with a cartoony style instead. Oh and I was actually recording my sculpting session, but the recording program closed for some reason after one hour...

Anyway, modeling as usually in Mudbox, refining and detailing (hair, shirt) in ZBrush. 3 hours 52 minutes.I might spend the rest of the time on making a tangue.Don't think it will be possible,though...

Keep those sculpts coming,guys!

aleks: your ardvark has a cool style to it, plus its base reminds me that if we win, this will be printed in 3d, so structural stability and balance may be a factor

montecristo: the sharks head and his clothing wrinkles look great, but it gets too low res to print text on the tshirt, unless you crank up the subdivisions another level or 2

I meant keep in mind that there has to be a bone structure under the skin, and on top of that muscle fibers, which influence how the surface will look and behave. You could search for some nice references on Wikipedia, and keep those nearby while sculpting, it helps a lot. Good luck.

Marv - moves the eyes to the sides, it seems to be the forward looking predator eyes that are throwing his look off, rats are beady bulging raisins off to the sides.

kazmamurat - now hes realy nice, not sure hes got the cat thing exactly but he make a great wampire from the 'Necroscope' books.

Hang on... you don't get it. I don't care if you do insects. Again, this is about having fun, not being jerks. :)

I got it. I thought it was funny. Do I win now? lol.

Well, I threw this together - 1 hour 18 minutes (+25 more looking up a ref).

Not really thrilled with it but...whatever. I'll do better next time. Keep 'em comin' everyone!

@kazmamurat:sir no doubt its a masterpiece but i agree with steamtrooper sir , it lacks
hair , pores on the skin and whiskers.
try refering to thunder cats images.

i dont think u will even need the left 20 minutes for this thats a huge time for someone like you.

I'm out of time. Here's what I ended up with. It's a rat man, but not just any type of rat; a lab-rat, you know the hairless ones they grow the ears on. Couldn't find the time to finish the back.

Awesomeness from each and everone.

Hehe about the whole animal thing :D Insects, birds, fish, reptiles etc etc are all subgroups of the kingdom "animals".
There are two main groups - plants and animals...It's as simple as that.

But let's concentrate on the challenge and not some biology stuff. I'm sure all of us had plenty of that at school :haha:

Hey guys. I have been using zbrush for a very short time but I really like the idea of this challenge. I'm having a hard time with my idea though and was hoping I could maybe get some help :)

Right I'm trying to make a squid man. The hardest part is making these tentacles come off his face. They look really pixalated and bad compared to the hi res of the rest of the model, which I know isn't that great yet either. I'm thinkin I'll have to start over. Help me out :)

JHarford: Already discussed it... :D Loving the model.

Oh! I thought edge loops where allowed for sculpting! I thought it was a natural process of deformation of the basic mesh. Sorry 'bout that, as I understood it, it was only sub-objects that posed a problem.

I'll restart my sculpt then (didn't save a version without the edge loop :(
It was only 10 mins after all hehe. And besides, it's very likely, like a lot of other people who are in this speed sculpt comp, that I'll do several manimals before choosing the final one ;)
