Due to the number of repeat questions I'm going to start some sticky threads for varoius types of tuts. Please feel free to add any you've found that you think are worthy of attention. Make sure you add a brief description & remember to check that you aren't posting one that has already been done. Most of mine will be max ones as thats what I use, but other software is more than welcome. This thread will mainly concentrate on modelling, but there may be all sorts of bits mixed in, including interesting discussions & articles. Texturing & lighting/rendering ones soon. Thanks.

Firstly, 3d total has a range of tutorials on various topics covering a wide range of software from max to maya to photoshop. Click on 'free stuff' then 'tutorials' for some of the best online tuts around imo. :D

Secondly, we get a lot of questions like, "how do I model a..." and "what's the best way to model a..." Basically the answer is that there is no real answer. The best way to model something is using whatever technique you feel comfortable using, whether its polys, nurbs or splines/patches. There is no right or wrong way & provided the model looks good and/or how its supposed to, no one will be able to tell you that you did it wrong. As for how, where to start! Within each of the main ways of modelling, (i.e. polys, nurbs etc,) there are literally hundreds of ways to model an object. Some people start from a primitive like a sphere or cube & tweak the vertices or add detail etc, some people start from a single poly, some use a network of splines/ nurbs curves... then there's booleans, lofting, extruding, welding, blends... the list goes on.
The best advice is to try modelling some simple objects using each type of modelling & see which you feel most comfortable with. Once you find one you like, try to learn more about the different techniques it employs. Thats about it.

K, here are the links:

http://www.xenomorphic.co.uk/ (hit 'education') a selection of max articles, published in 3d world (shown here by the author,) these are not step by step walkthroughs, but rather a discussion of techniques.

http://www.webreference.com/3d/lesson117/ a discussion into the benefits of editable poly mode & welding vertices in max. More to be found on that site.

http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorial.asp 3d cafe's tutorials page - expect a few broken links.

http://www.3dluvr.com/content/maxedout.php 3dluvr's max tuts. some good stuff. Also available from 3dluvr are harware tests & various other articles.

http://www.3du.com/meshmaster/ Rich Suchy's poly modelling tutorials. Done mostly in Lightwave I tihnk, but applicable to any poly capable package

http://www.3drender.com/models/index.htm Jeremy Birn's tuts page. Mostly nurbs stuff, but worth a look. (especially if you use nurbs, obv.) There is also a section on lighting & rendering & his book comes highly recommended.

http://raph.com/3dartists/tutorials/ Raph's tutorials page including max, LW & softimage

http://www.the3dstudio.com/tutorials.asp 3d studios tuts, organised into catagory.

http://www.3dgate.com/techniques/tutorials.html 3d gates tuts page. The high pass filter one, originally posted at gamasutra.com I believe is very useful for game textures

http://www.3d-worxx.de/tutorials/ german site but the tuts I looked at were in english. you could always use babelfish to translate or ask boogie-3DT (joke!) Don't ask me, my German is too rusty. Worth a look for Willi Hammes lighting tips.

http://www.anticz.com/anticz.htm exellent selection of info here - hit 'learn'. Everything from progressive morphing in max 3 (applicable to 4 - 5 has it native.) to the uses of eulers (quote: "pronounced oilers" ;)) and quaternions to avoid gimbal lock. Don't know what gimbal lock is? Follow the link & you will!

http://www.erikasorson.com/tutorials/tutorial_subdivision.html essential reading for a basic grounding in sub-d modelling.

http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/ more advanced discussion of sub-d's & related techniques. Read the above link first.

http://www.izware.com/news/indexa446.html excellent article on sub-d methodology, written by modelling master Bay Raitt.

http://cube.phlatt.net/home/spiraloid/ Bay's homepage. Modelling timelapse gif & avi's along with good character articles, explanation of edge loops and some very interesting discussions on the forum

http://ambient-whisper.cgcommunity.com/Tutorials/facial/Page-1.html ambient (martin krol) is another great poly modeller. This is for mirai, but again applicable to most poly modelling packages.

http://www.bobotheseal.com/tuts.htm Bobo the seal, who is a low poly black belt explains some useful stuff here

http://www.loonygames.com/content/1.38/totb/ one of several articles by Paul Steed, modeller on quake 2 & 3. The menu doesn't seem to be working at the moment but try to read them all. Also his book is good for people wanting to get into low poly modelling - Creating a character in 3ds max

http://www.coronaleonis.com/tutorial/index.html hyper's game art tuts - mostly concentrating on skinning if I remember right.

http://64.91.236.18/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000040 link to a thread with LOTS of low poly tuts

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/default.asp computer arts magazine website with an archive of 2d & 3d tutorials.

http://web.tampabay.rr.com/ambethia/mirai/ more mirai stuff, but again, read between the lines & you'll probably learn something.

http://web.tiscali.it/imago3d/bump%20tutorial/bump_profile.html tips on testing out bump maps in photoshop to save time

http://www.max3dstuff.com/ the tutorials section here has several modelling tuts from box modelling to surface tools

http://www.menithings.com/How.htm Aristomenis Tsirbas' site. Awesome lightwave user with many interesting tuts here.

http://www.3dluvr.com/setherial/tutor/mouth/tutor01.htm How to correctly model a mouth using polys. David op De Beeck shows us how.

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/cg_education.htm Neil Blevins has been called the Giger of 3d art. Lots of good tuts here, mainly materials stuff but all good. Some brazil info too.

http://www.spicycricket.com/SCA/hello.html spicy cricket concentrates mainly on animation, but there are some good articles here.

http://www.thehobbitguy.com/tutorials/polymodeling/index.html Dave Komorowski shows us how to model a head in maya - useful for any poly modeller

http://www.3dbuzz.com/index.php 3d buzz tuts page. Go search.

http://coldfusion.art.msstate.edu/camenisch/thehumanhead/modelingtheory.html The human head website. Very useful resource & this page is the beggining of the modelling theory article. Have a good read around the site.

http://www.trinisica.com/sub_learn_tutorial.asp?lv=3&mode=2&show=polymodeling polymodelling explained by Johan Thorngren

http://www.3dlinks.com/ tutorials menu down on the right hand side. Scroll down.

http://www.fineart.sk/tut/yoda/Yoda_Tut_p1.htm Ken Brilliant's yoda head modelling tut from fineart.sk (more on there)

K, thats about it for now. Like I said, please feel free to add to this list, providing you're not duplicating links. (If someone posted a general front page link & you post the link to a specific tut at that site, that's ok.) Please note - I want this thread to be of benefit to everyone, so with that in mind please post a link if you are replying, even if its only one. Replies without a link will be deleted in order to keep this thread on topic & streamlined unless the reply contains relevant discussion of modelling techniques and/or methodology.

Ok, I'm going to open this up to tutorials of any kind, seeing as how I didn't get the response I was hoping for. Any decent tut is welcome, from modelling to texturing to lighting etc. Please try & avoid repeats as before if possible.

I've posted the character rigging videos and tutorials I've created for instructing my students.

You can get them at http://www.dmc3d.com and click on tutorials.

I've broken it up into 3 parts to make it easier for download. Each section is about 20-25 megs and runs at 4x speed. Grab Total Commander from http://www.ghisler.com to slow it down.

I have been wanting one of these for the longest time, the only one I can find is the Joan OF Arc one at 3dtotal.com, not that great of a texture. Yeah I want to know how to do procedurals as well as using brazil to do it, or a VERY IN DEPTH tutorial to using photoshop to do it.

yes, the tutorials are pretty great, pretty useful.
i have one minor issue with the use of Specular Level & Glossiness. I tend to agree with neil blevins http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/metal_and_refs/metal_and_refs.htm in that, & im quoting here sorry if this is a no-no, "What we call a specular highlight is just a reflection of a light source on your surface". its been my experience that taking the time to set up some kind of environment with things that would cause highlights produces better results.
my first post.. how exciting

Thought I'd post this link here as it seems like it should be both important and helpful to anyone wanting to model a human character....

This isn't so much a tutorial as a thread over on CGTalk concerning topology. It was started by Steven Stahlberg (maybe about a year ago) and it has lots of examples and discussions about the construction (or layout) of the mesh of the human figure.....for example, how to construct the mesh in a way that will work well for animation purposes.

Anyways, heres the link.....
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=108412
Last I checked the thread was about 75 pages long....but worth having a look for some tips and tricks. And worth having a look to see how the Master himself constucts his human characters.

Hope this comes in helpful folks :)

Is there any way we could get together and take this sticky thread and actually organize it into sections; IE: Lighting, geometry, edge-flow, mapping, etc?

The main reason I don't come to my home site (here) for tutorials is that I feel like an idiot asking for help on something when I know that it's probably buried in this thread somewhere. Maybe if I were given permission to do so, I would organize it, but I just need someway to get to the precious information in this resourceful thread faster and more efficiently.

Hi

I've been dabbling in 3D modelling for about a month now using a trial version of 3D Studio Max now.

I'm no where near anything as superb as all the other modellers I've seen here, and I'd never expect to.

Only doing this purely out of interest as I have no illusions for myself in becoming a 3D artist, not at the age of 39 :p, I just enjoy building things in 3D, even if they are very simple.

At the moment I have been using the shift drag method and following Grant Warwicks Hard Edge modeling fundementals tutorials which are superb.

One issue I am struggling with though is UVW mapping. I've managed to UVW unwrap and map simple items like a box, most of the tutorials out on the net seem to do explain UVW mapping using some sort of primative. Is there a decent set of literature, electronic or otherwise which would manage to explain how to do this on a surface that does not conform to a cylinder or cube.

Everytime I place the maps on a curved flowing mesh with hard edged seams (Like two different shaped blobs joined together like siamese twins heads, for lack of a better description), I cannot get the map to place correctly. It usually stretches too much and no amount of moving verts or detaching and sewing seams makes it better.

Just need a gentle push in the direction of a decent tutorial which isn't based on a box, would be much appreciated.

Sorry if my asking for a tut was done the long way round :)

Regards
John
