Okay, okay, so you humans don´t see just Black & White (I think is Driads who does ) Well, I´ve added some colours and lights to my chariot in order to make it more "human". Hope you enjoy it. I was thinking about naming it "Chariolette".

3D-Loops-fx: Thank you. Good design.Incredible lights. Like your model. Keep 3Ding :)
Radarhead: Incredible designs. Incredible working speed (536274 cars per minute.)Thank you for the tutorials.
Gi2eEn: Like very much your models. I love antiques.
Daphone: Like your design. Very good idea for your front wheel.
Zerling: Why not more turbines :). Like your model.
Jaz: Yours is really the fastest!:)

post it as soon as you can.

:D

--Sniper--: thanks !, I like your models too, your first answers( posts) and the pseudo-competition that you initiated vs. radarhead was the reason way I'm here....
This car is my own design. I've started it using a simple spline. Im trying to make it standard like car, and then........
..... it will be transformed into a supermonster-car....Faster than yours, and faster than all of the other cars........:D :D :D :D .

--EYE of ARES---- wooouuuh man!! this is a godness olympus car!!

remember that you cannot fly with it

:D

If you want to do so...... make initiate another thread!! your car MUST be mortal,, :D .,, Which short of fuel are you using to increase thrust doesn't matter, BUT...........what about the torch??

radarhead= Road-Runner=flash, I don't know if owr cars are faster than yours, ...You mouse(or wacom) are faster than all the cars.

this new post is cool. Again traditional engines?..

RADARHEAD: I show karabo's tutorial, but I couldn't find the body-division tips using bump maps..

I've tried lots of parameters...but I need more help.
I Get a very jerky lines
this lines can be smothed reducind bump intensity (5%), but the effect is very soft.

1.- ok. we have a car, left and top shaded renders. I draw some black lines in photoshop (other layer) and I get a bump map..(B&W) 2000px x 500px
Questions: A.- do you use blur? in photoshop? in max?
B.- the lines are single pixel width?
C.- do you use another difuse map for the black line?

Here in your last post the doors looks perfet.. I can't achieve this quality using a bump map.

2.- do you use map channels with diferent ID mat. to put this lines on top and lateral car's parts or just a box UVW map?

I don't know if you have some time to answer, I'm learnig a lot here , just watching your pics, and other's cars.

THANKS

Thanx guys.

jak3d: Post a non-reflective version of your model with a grey material so we can see the modeling details better. People will be better able to give suggestions on the model this way.

3d-loops-fx: Karabo's tut doesn't discuss bumping door seams. That's why you couldn't find it. I paint the bumps in PS and use planar mapping on different areas of the car, say the doors and the headlights in this case. For nice even lines, learn to use the tools that PS offers like stroking bezier lines, etc. I generally duplicate the line layer in PS and blur the duplicate layer a small amount which gives a slight curved appearance to the bump map. Avoid using just a thin black line alone as the bump.

The doors and things that I've bumped on this thread did not use another material for the actual seam. It's just bumped and that's it.

Attached is a section of the bump I made for the last car I posted. I zoomed in on a section so you can see that it's not just a single thin line.

Hope that helps.

Jak3d: I use whatever method works best. I usually detach the doors but often just extrude edges and chamfer for the hood, leaving the hood part of the original mesh. I only use bump maps when I'm in a hurry and it will look convincing. Your door seams look very good. The hood needs some work.

Cool thread!

I am working on a car, albeit slowly howver I have a few problems as I am very much a newbie. (Btw, Radarhead, Sniper and karabo, you're models really stood out as well as a lot of others...)

My problem is that when I meshsmooth my car, everything gets distorted. Ive taken a few pics to explain:

This is the wireframe before smoothing:

Aurorae
05-05-2003, 11:45 AM
and after :

Im getting annoyed because this hasnt happened before. I am using symmetry, does that perhaps have anything to do with it?

3d-loops-fx
05-05-2003, 12:34 PM
Now Radarhead is sleeping, or he is modelling 100 3d cars per minute.:D

I'll try to help you.

Your have to weld this vertex, they seem to be splited or broken.

try with Editable poly subdivision rollout menu. 1-2 interations should be ok for viewport's preview, and 3-4 for render.

weld those vertex, it could be the solution.

:p

Sniper
05-05-2003, 01:02 PM
Aurorae welding the vertices as 3D loops said should fix the problem I cant think of any other reason why the mash is smoothing like that.

3D loops to apply more than one bump map to a material try using a composite material. If you have a look in "My 2nd car" thread ive posted some close up shots of my wheels witch have a tread bump map aswell as a noise bump map to make the tire look worn. Hope this helps.

I tried welding the vertices together but no joy, when I do that more problems occur. I know its asking an awful lot, but here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/aurorae/Rough.3DS) is the mesh for the car. If anyone wants to have a little look, and help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Andy.

i have a really silly question but i shot anyway, what do you perople use to mirror your cars, do you mirror it and weld vertex,
thats how i do it, but im getting the sense that may be an easy way :)

ok, my girlfriend is coming over, so i post and update in a few hours of my fia palio hiding the planes.

Please!! You guys are way too kind. No more worship talk! LOL! This thread is not a competition. Just a way to express some creativity and learn new skills and improve old ones. :)

Aurorae: I looked at your mesh file. The problem is caused because you are building both sides of the body. The outside and the inside. Meshmooth is smoothing both sides and screwing up your mesh. Delete ALL the faces on the inside (underside) of your mesh. They won't be visible anyway.

Jak3d: If you have Max 5, you can use the Symmetry mod to mirror half the body. It automatically welds the center vertices. It defaults to mirroring along the pivot point, so I usually move my pivot to the middle edge before applying Symmetry but it's not required because you can move the Symmetry gizmo to get the halves lined up.

For Max 4 or earlier, mirror an instance of the body using the mirror tool on the tool bar. After the body is complete, make the instance unique, attach it to the original half, and weld all the center vertices.

Sniper
05-05-2003, 03:56 PM
Ok Aurorae just had a look at your mesh there is problems with it cause the underside of the mesh is atatched to the top of the mesh in some places. Maybe if you delete the underside of the mesh as it wont be seen anyway. area where the front guards are is a real mess not sure how you want it to look but I sugest you might have to remake it. Hope this helps you out.

aurorae: i dont know much and i see you solve the problem, but for fruther time, sometimes you may have the same look when smoothed, when a polygon normal is facing the other side than all the rest of the mesh, i know its not the case but, if anytime it happens to you well, you have options.;)

Radar: i dont have 3ds 5 so, i continue mirroring and welding, but ill search, it may be a plug in

IDownupI : Ok , then............model the cat. Your cat is here with us, in the real world. You must model a 3d cat.

Radarhead: Learning question, ..Wen you start polyediting a car, wich basic figure do you choose?..2 sliced spheres for the wheels, a box, a chanfer box, or just a extruded spline??

Thanks

Radarhead
07-05-2003, 08:00 PM
IDownupI: Build a car for your 3D cat to drive.:)

3d-loops-fx: The modeling technique depends on the car shape I am going for. The little toy cars started out as a tube object with 12 sides for the wheel wells. I converted it to an Editable Poly and deleted all the polys except the front faces on the top half. You are left with a flat half-donut. I duplicate the polys and move them so that I have two wheel wells. I then start extruding edges and creating polys to get the shape I want.

The sceen cap shows the start of the toy car.

After seeing all the great car models in this thread, I decided I should try one too.

It's nothing original like a lot of the other cars in this thread, but this is what I've got so far. It's not finished yet, obviously, there's no interior and some more details and tweaking are needed.

Great job to everyone who has posted their car models here.:)

Radarhead: Thank you for your answer, I'm larning a lot. I've never tried to medel cars, is better than I thought!!

-----I've discovered somethig usefull for this kind of modelling..

I've customized my max UI like this, and I work faster.:
---Spacebar= Pan view (like photoshop)
---F3 = Display edged faces on current selected objets.
---F4 = Toggle "Use Poly subdivision".
Belive me, You'll work faster. I' try to atach my custom UI file, because is hard to find this commands.

Modelling interior. I made some changes, there is another air intake. It'll need some dacals saying " NO ICECREAMS permited onboard" ..... It could be dangerous for car's engine :D

I want to finish this car (standard looking) to use it into my new web, I promise that I'll convert it in a real road-monster.... :p

Looking good, 3D-loops.
Welcome to the thread Brandt.

Obviously, not a car but I've nearly perfected modeled tires, which I used to just bump. I build a row of tread then array instances around the tire tube. I do some other things to get it to look like the tread is part of the tube. Of course the rim is splined. This method is a bit more versitile then extruding polys on a tube object.

Thought you all might appreciate the image.

this is my first car modelling, i've started with 3d only 1 month ago (3D studio)

Ah, Radarhead your style is... is.... amazing!

Well i also have a question, i used the Radarhead's photoshop bump tecnique for te doors etc.
i've assign an id to any parts of car that needs a bump (Multi/Sub-Object material)... it's the right way? coz' i have a problem now.... i don't know how to add some decals whitout covering the bumps (if i cover it, the bump is invisible in the covered zone)

PS: Sorry for the bad english, but i'm a proud "Spaghetti Eater" :p

For each of the sub materials, put the exact same bump map as the original material in each sub material. Screen shots won't make it any more clear. Does anyone else know what I mean? Or can explain it better?

Please let me know what you think guys. The rims were a little more difficult to model than I thought. I used a cylinder to make an outer ring. Then modeled a separate spoke, cloned it until I had 5 of them and then attached them to the ring.

brandt: I think that when you add something in that scene for the car to reflect, the color will change dramatically. Maybe to reflective. Right now your background is grey, which is why your car's paint looks a little flat. Try soem HDRI or put an environment in the scene. It would make the render look much better.

i've used a brazil carpaint, a bordeaux (red) for Candy color and a vivid orange for Diffuse the rest of settings are the base carpaint settings, for reflections i've used an hdri on Environment (Render --> Environment), istanced it on a material slot and change the map to Spherical (logically i've tweaked the light intensity on the map)... ahhh the hdri is an angular latitude/longitude (you can modify hdri with HRD Shop, a free tool downloadable from HERE (http://www.debevec.org/HDRShop/) )

Thanks for the comments everyone.

jak3d, as for how I made the door, I didn't use a bump map, it's modeled in the geometry. I've included a pic showing what I did. First, select the edges that outline the door shape, then chamfer them (I got rid of any tris by welding the vertices), then select the new polygons and extrude them inwards. Hope this helps.

Nice one Star :D Reminds me of some Videogame
Well if you want this car smooth then first put in more detail then apply a Mesh Smooth Modifier (3ds Max) and play a bit with the weightening options of the Modifier :) (I hope this is correct :D)
Well, err do you use Max?

@GordaN:
The Tire-Material ist just the Rubber-Floor standard material in Maya :D I´m not very experienced with Materials yet ;)

Ha ha great work Kite love it..:D

Marty I meant to say this b4 but forgot. Dont be scared to have a go. I think some of the funniest and what I would say cars that have really made this a great thread have been pretty simple. I think all of the cars are awsome it doesnt have to be complicated to be a great car. Looking forward to seeing something from you..:)

Thanks xboxthug13b ive had a bit of a break from the creative side of things but still dont have any brilliant ideas. My brain just doesnt work that way..:(

Looking good so far star. What do you mean "And how the f.... can i make it round at the places i want." what exactly do you want to know? And how much do you know already? Im guessing you want to know about mesh smooth or something like that. Also if you tell us what program you are using it will make it easier to help you out..:)

Luke.....

P.S. aww here is my latest render. Motors borrowed from star wars..:P some kind of super fast hyper drive type thing..lol

Thanks Sniper :D

I´m looking/trying for a realy niiiiice Car/Metal/Chrome Shader for Maya :) Looks nice what i´ve got there, but not realistic ^^
Also trying to make cool-looking glass like your window or light-glasses but no success :P

Nice car, Hyperdrive 1.3 guaranteed :D But what happens to the 2 rear Motors when the 2 front Motors fire up :D

Sniper
11-05-2003, 04:06 PM
Ahh Kite its not actually 2 motors on each side..:P The front bit is the fuel combustion cell. then it runs through to the back part where the thrust is generated. Heres another pic. Im trying to get that I had a couple of jet engines lying around so I slapped them on my car look but im not really sure If it looks good or not. Maybe I need to have the motors tied on with rope..lol

Radarhead: Your scene is great! I love it, but yes, kind of does seem a bit empty.

Sniper: I love your car! Especially the little tubes that go to the front...

Kingcobra: Exelent model, now all you need are some turbines :D

I'm working on my little car that I will try to finish soon so I can post it in here...

I am using 3d studio max 5.0, and I dont have much experience with 3d modelling! I have only made some simple models.

When i use meshsmooth i dont get the right results. i want to make smooth ereas and areas wich are less smooth.
Can you give me some help on how to do it right ?!

thx

:D Thanks for your positive comments :D

Well, got one off-road wheel :D
Now the rest of the car :)

I can´t geht a proper "rubber" and "chrome" material
Like this Brazil-Chrome stuff :) Or the glass of 3d-loops car, great :D Somehow Maya MUST be able to produce those materials :D Maybe i´ll try mental ray? :D 1.5 is free :)

This thread is A-L-I-V-E. LOL! Great models keep coming.

I'm still working on the textures, lighting and more stuff in the scene. Maybe some kind of robotic vehicle in the background. Don't know yet. This is a pre-composite render thus the white door opening.

Someone had a question about the rivets and floor. The rivets are modeled and the floor is bumped.

Hey all, love all the cars and if I could half of this I would include my own work :D

Just wondering why no one is really submitting any wireframes for their work. Would be good to see how they have all been constructed...

Just an idea.

travis_jinx: No one's posting wireframes because this thread is about ideas not necessarily about modeling. I'm sure if anyone requested a wire of a specific model, it would be posted.

wow, this is a fantastic thread. Radarhead you once again made my desktop background of the week. The green version of the car in the cool garage. If I wasn't knee deep in a project at the moment I would make my own car. Every image in this topic just screams with creativity. I just hope this is still around at the end of the month..unless new changes are ordered...in that case I hope this thread is still here by the end of next month.

well, this is not done yet, and this is just clay and wire model..... will materialize later when done... but the idea is.... i fly will be under the cup on a spring with a penny on it for it to be the seat.... the can is WD-40 and then you have 2 zippo lighters in which i will use my Phoenix plugin for the flames.... glass is used as a protector from the flames.... the landing gear are toothpicks and olives.... and the frame is 2 penciles and 6 popsickle sticks..... still adding stuff but didnt want to put anything that fly's cant get a hold of lol ;)

p.s. this is finally the first thing i put on here lol, been thinking of something to make that would be unique and finally decided on a flying fly jet type thing :) so enjoy and will have updates

*EDIT* i will make a reg car after this, just thought this would be cool :)

Jak3d: If the dark area disappears when you hide the car, ask yourself if there is any intersecting geometry that is in front of the back of the headlight reflector. That's what it looks like.

Zytrex
12-05-2003, 07:48 PM
The headlights seem to be as bright as they can be. What likely makes them look wrong compared to what you think they should look like is a lack of glow or flaring. Normally, if you look at a car with the headlights in your face, the headlights are so much brighter than everything else that expose more than they should. What I mean is that instead of lighting up the small area of your retina that would form the picture of the headlights in your head, the light leaks a bit and more of your retina, or more of the film in a camera, or more space on the surface of a CCD camera gets hit, and it forms a glow. So, try adding a glow or lens flare effect to the lights and they should look more realistic.

i dont mind to sound stupid radar;) i kinda think the problem was another time the reflection, and i was looking for another solution, because the light vulve are right, the intersection was behind the so i miss that, also i think the glow that zytrex say may look good.

radar, i hope you dont mind that i have posted my car here?
if you dont mind i fix the problem and i ?ll be back:D

Jak3d: No rules here, bud. Just remember that you want your headlight to still look like a headlight even when it is turned "off." Just work on the reflections for it and it will be fine.

Good work to all.

Edit: jak3d: also remember that the shape of the headlight reflector is critical in getting it to reflect properly and look right.
