View Full Version : My Car's Faster Than Your Car
04-05-2003, 06:26 PM
Hey!! if you can make a 3d model better than this one, you MUST JOIN this thread, It isn't a copetition,.... just for fun!!
Lets go!!, take a 10 minutes break and join us!!:D
04-05-2003, 07:02 PM
are you talking to mee 3d-loops-fx
because i am allready working on the car
04-05-2003, 07:36 PM
Great work 3D loops fx your car is very nice. It has that Radarhead style that so many of us would like to have..:) and that last post did you model that car or download it? Its an awsome model and if I can get it from somwhere id like to. Thanks...lol
EYE OF ARES

Okay, okay, so you humans don´t see just Black & White (I think is Driads who does ) Well, I´ve added some colours and lights to my chariot in order to make it more "human". Hope you enjoy it. I was thinking about naming it "Chariolette".
3D-Loops-fx: Thank you. Good design.Incredible lights. Like your model. Keep 3Ding :)
Radarhead: Incredible designs. Incredible working speed (536274 cars per minute.)Thank you for the tutorials.
Gi2eEn: Like very much your models. I love antiques.
Daphone: Like your design. Very good idea for your front wheel.
Zerling: Why not more turbines :). Like your model.
Jaz: Yours is really the fastest!:)
EYE OF ARES

04-05-2003, 09:58 PM
---mcrazer --: I'm sorry , then ,,,,,,GO!
post it as soon as you can.
--Sniper--: thanks !, I like your models too, your first answers( posts) and the pseudo-competition that you initiated vs. radarhead was the reason way I'm here....
This car is my own design. I've started it using a simple spline. Im trying to make it standard like car, and then........
..... it will be transformed into a supermonster-car....Faster than yours, and faster than all of the other cars........:D :D :D :D .
--EYE of ARES---- wooouuuh man!! this is a godness olympus car!!
remember that you cannot fly with it
If you want to do so...... make initiate another thread!! your car MUST be mortal,, :D .,, Which short of fuel are you using to increase thrust doesn't matter, BUT...........what about the torch??
04-05-2003, 10:54 PM
Another extreme machine entry...
05-05-2003, 01:29 AM
radarhead= Road-Runner=flash, I don't know if owr cars are faster than yours, ...You mouse(or wacom) are faster than all the cars.
this new post is cool. Again traditional engines?..
RADARHEAD: I show karabo's tutorial, but I couldn't find the body-division tips using bump maps..
I've tried lots of parameters...but I need more help.
I Get a very jerky lines
this lines can be smothed reducind bump intensity (5%), but the effect is very soft.
1.- ok. we have a car, left and top shaded renders. I draw some black lines in photoshop (other layer) and I get a bump map..(B&W) 2000px x 500px
Questions: A.- do you use blur? in photoshop? in max?
B.- the lines are single pixel width?
C.- do you use another difuse map for the black line?
Here in your last post the doors looks perfet.. I can't achieve this quality using a bump map.
2.- do you use map channels with diferent ID mat. to put this lines on top and lateral car's parts or just a box UVW map?
I don't know if you have some time to answer, I'm learnig a lot here , just watching your pics, and other's cars.
05-05-2003, 02:08 AM
well, i have been working in this for about a week, ist my first tiem with brazil and hrdi, i post this picture in my own thread, but i see that here more people that know about cars can give an opinion, its a standar car, is as fast but,
radarhead, your last one its awesome LOL!!!
hope you like it...
also, i have a problem with my reflections and i post a pic here to show this problem, if anyone think can help me, i will thank you a lot
Starbucks gift card (http://bestfreegiftcard.com/starbucks-gift-card/)
05-05-2003, 02:34 AM
jak3d: Post a non-reflective version of your model with a grey material so we can see the modeling details better. People will be better able to give suggestions on the model this way.
3d-loops-fx: Karabo's tut doesn't discuss bumping door seams. That's why you couldn't find it. I paint the bumps in PS and use planar mapping on different areas of the car, say the doors and the headlights in this case. For nice even lines, learn to use the tools that PS offers like stroking bezier lines, etc. I generally duplicate the line layer in PS and blur the duplicate layer a small amount which gives a slight curved appearance to the bump map. Avoid using just a thin black line alone as the bump.
The doors and things that I've bumped on this thread did not use another material for the actual seam. It's just bumped and that's it.
Attached is a section of the bump I made for the last car I posted. I zoomed in on a section so you can see that it's not just a single thin line.
Hope that helps.
05-05-2003, 05:16 AM
Well . . i am by no means "good" at this, but here is my entry, so far. Im gonna add some more things, but this is what i have so far. What do u people think?
05-05-2003, 05:27 AM
here is a non-reflective shot, but i can see the problem, i repeat the other door look perfect, may be and HDRi or Brazil problem, and by that i mean that i cant use it
Radar, i think i start to use your metod for the panels, i would save a lot of trouble and it looks more easy to do:roll:
FIREPOWER ENGINE (http://www.dodge-wiki.com/wiki/Chrysler_FirePower_engine)
05-05-2003, 05:32 AM
Ravenlp: Is that a speedy vacuum cleaner?:)
Jak3d: I use whatever method works best. I usually detach the doors but often just extrude edges and chamfer for the hood, leaving the hood part of the original mesh. I only use bump maps when I'm in a hurry and it will look convincing. Your door seams look very good. The hood needs some work.
05-05-2003, 05:38 AM
the best damn vacuum cleaner ever! i mean cmon now .. . lol, nah ive just been pullin it from my head as i went . . its ok, still needs work. Your the man tho radar, how could u pull those cars fro your @$$ in like an hour. Its awesome, how long ya been doin 3D?
05-05-2003, 06:05 AM
LOL! Ravenlp, just messin' with ya'. I've been doing 3D for a year now.
I started this one a couple of hours ago. Not done of course. Who says a car needs wheels?
P.S. The doors are modeled on this one.
05-05-2003, 06:10 AM
haha i know, its all gravy man! lol how do u make a good metal texture like that for your hmm . . floater thingies lol - or rims etc.?
05-05-2003, 06:14 AM
Sigh...*looks on in aww*
05-05-2003, 07:07 AM
Just a shot from the front. Thought it looked cool.
That's Brazil Chrome. Check my Lotus Elise thread for Max settings to get the same look.
05-05-2003, 08:45 AM
Thats so cool Radar. Have I told you lately that I hate you? Damn you to hell with your super cool models that you make in like 5 minutes...lol That last one is so cool.
P.S. I dont really hate you...:P
05-05-2003, 10:02 AM
ok, I've had it with you Radarhead, you are now disqualified from this competition. How the hell are we mere mortals supposed to compete with talent like that?? It's impossible. You are too much!! :D I don't think the guys at WETA digital could stand up to this onslaught from you. And you do them so damn fast, how the hell is that even possible? I bow down to thy divine powers oh great one. I am now a Radarhead disciple and I hope that some of that divine knowledge might seep into my head and make me a good as you.
HAIL GREAT RADARHEAD, HAIL!! :halo:
05-05-2003, 11:05 AM
Ok maybe we should change the name of this thread to " All hail King Radarhead" I think that would be more apropriate...:)
Its seems you have a quite large following Radar. Great work.
05-05-2003, 11:16 AM
jak3d: nice model , if you want to increase reflections during your tests, hide the grey planes on the background(first posted pic).:)
cool material, are you thinking in a cabrio version?? I'd like to see the interior.
radarhead: thanks a lot."""
my last question---------- how to use multiple bump maps. I know that we can use map chanels, but how to put more than one bitmap into the mat bump slot?. Do you use multi/sub materials with diferents ID's ?.. It should be more simple.. I know.
P.S. your last entry is fantastic, awesome, I love to fly.
05-05-2003, 11:43 AM
I am working on a car, albeit slowly howver I have a few problems as I am very much a newbie. (Btw, Radarhead, Sniper and karabo, you're models really stood out as well as a lot of others...)
My problem is that when I meshsmooth my car, everything gets distorted. Ive taken a few pics to explain:
This is the wireframe before smoothing:
05-05-2003, 11:45 AM
and after :
Im getting annoyed because this hasnt happened before. I am using symmetry, does that perhaps have anything to do with it?
05-05-2003, 12:34 PM
Now Radarhead is sleeping, or he is modelling 100 3d cars per minute.:D
I'll try to help you.
Your have to weld this vertex, they seem to be splited or broken.
try with Editable poly subdivision rollout menu. 1-2 interations should be ok for viewport's preview, and 3-4 for render.
weld those vertex, it could be the solution.
05-05-2003, 01:02 PM
Aurorae welding the vertices as 3D loops said should fix the problem I cant think of any other reason why the mash is smoothing like that.
3D loops to apply more than one bump map to a material try using a composite material. If you have a look in "My 2nd car" thread ive posted some close up shots of my wheels witch have a tread bump map aswell as a noise bump map to make the tire look worn. Hope this helps.
05-05-2003, 01:23 PM
I guess i'll start another car after class. Don't have any clue what it's gonna be like, so we'll just see what happens. I don't think I'll make turbines this time. I'll rely on pure petrol power....
05-05-2003, 02:16 PM
Argh my god its driving me crazy :p. Ill pay someone to do it
I tried welding the vertices together but no joy, when I do that more problems occur. I know its asking an awful lot, but here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/aurorae/Rough.3DS) is the mesh for the car. If anyone wants to have a little look, and help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Andy.
05-05-2003, 02:54 PM
i have a really silly question but i shot anyway, what do you perople use to mirror your cars, do you mirror it and weld vertex,
thats how i do it, but im getting the sense that may be an easy way :)
ok, my girlfriend is coming over, so i post and update in a few hours of my fia palio hiding the planes.
thanx for the comments

Please!! You guys are way too kind. No more worship talk! LOL! This thread is not a competition. Just a way to express some creativity and learn new skills and improve old ones. :)
Aurorae: I looked at your mesh file. The problem is caused because you are building both sides of the body. The outside and the inside. Meshmooth is smoothing both sides and screwing up your mesh. Delete ALL the faces on the inside (underside) of your mesh. They won't be visible anyway.
Jak3d: If you have Max 5, you can use the Symmetry mod to mirror half the body. It automatically welds the center vertices. It defaults to mirroring along the pivot point, so I usually move my pivot to the middle edge before applying Symmetry but it's not required because you can move the Symmetry gizmo to get the halves lined up.
For Max 4 or earlier, mirror an instance of the body using the mirror tool on the tool bar. After the body is complete, make the instance unique, attach it to the original half, and weld all the center vertices.
05-05-2003, 03:56 PM
Ok Aurorae just had a look at your mesh there is problems with it cause the underside of the mesh is atatched to the top of the mesh in some places. Maybe if you delete the underside of the mesh as it wont be seen anyway. area where the front guards are is a real mess not sure how you want it to look but I sugest you might have to remake it. Hope this helps you out.
EDIT well by the time I actually finishe my reply Radarhead had beaten me to it..damn you Radar..lol
05-05-2003, 03:58 PM
Please!! You guys are way too kind. No more worship talk! LOL! This thread is not a competition. Just a way to express some creativity and learn new skills and improve old ones.
How can we not? Your like some kind of divine 3DSMax angel. Sure enough it worked. You really do deserve this kind of praise. Many thank-you's :).
How's about a radarhead fan-club? :p
EDIT: Lol thanks guys, I wrote this before I saw your (sniper) post.
Hows about a radarhead & Sniper fan-club :p:D
05-05-2003, 07:29 PM
aurorae: i dont know much and i see you solve the problem, but for fruther time, sometimes you may have the same look when smoothed, when a polygon normal is facing the other side than all the rest of the mesh, i know its not the case but, if anytime it happens to you well, you have options.;)
Radar: i dont have 3ds 5 so, i continue mirroring and welding, but ill search, it may be a plug in
i may have invented some words for this reply so.......sorry again form my english
Extreme vaporizer (http://extremevaporizer.info)
05-05-2003, 07:32 PM
Radarhead: That "stuff" coming from the "foater things" on your last entry, is that post or is tha some kind of particle??? It doesnt look like a particle.
05-05-2003, 07:34 PM
Torlock: That's just a fire effect using 8 atmos-gizmos to control the shape of the flame.
05-05-2003, 08:06 PM
looks very good!
05-05-2003, 09:29 PM
Another "car" conceived in a warped mind. Perhaps the ugliest car ever! LOL!
05-05-2003, 09:33 PM
@ Radar: Again amazing work- What HDRIs are you using. Are there others than from devebec.com???
And another question: When I use HDRIs in my background and they get visible in my camera they are always very pixeld (dont know if this word exists :)) yours look like they are blurred. What could that be??
05-05-2003, 09:36 PM
Try a different filter setting for your HDRI in the material settings. No filtering will make them pixelated when viewed directly. Try Summed Area. Yes, that's a Devebec one.
This is ugly - but i like it. Sort of Retro charm.;)
Save for those headlights. They look like they are stuffing the car's nostrils, it's a nose on the hood?
05-05-2003, 09:59 PM
i wouldnt be caught dead in that thing, does it go fast????
05-05-2003, 11:43 PM
A little update - cause there're too many 4-wheelers :D - not finished yet.
05-05-2003, 11:45 PM
Cool bike!! I've never seen that make/model. What is it? Does Bridgestone make motorcycle tires?
05-05-2003, 11:47 PM
I don't know - I did it cause I have Bridgestone tires on my car :)
06-05-2003, 12:52 AM

I like it. It has a cool "old school" feel to it.
06-05-2003, 03:34 AM
That retro theme inspired me to come up with this. Based on the style of the late 50's, early 60's cars. I hate to cute it up to put a monster engine in it.
06-05-2003, 03:42 AM
Ok some more great works from Radar. That first one is an ugly car but Id like to own one. Like most new concept cars alot of the time when you first see it you think its ugly but it grows on you.
Bridgestone does make motor bike tires but im not sure about all terain motorbike tires on a road bike..lol
06-05-2003, 04:54 AM
(o)ne - sweeeeet bike. and great render...looks real.
06-05-2003, 05:38 AM
(O)ne: Nice bike:D Not sure how you turn with it
Radarhead: Cool stuff as always, you must be a fast modeler:)
06-05-2003, 06:09 AM
Thank you guys, I'm workin' on it
I think Sniper is right - there are no such tires in reality (I will better check official sites for this) :)
RubberDuck - you will be when I'll finish it :)
BTW - do you know that this topic was read by over 20.000 people for now! Cool
Radarhead - I liked ugly more than last :)
06-05-2003, 01:44 PM
Some updates to my "Mono Bike"
06-05-2003, 02:21 PM
Wow :) I think we need seatbelts or smth. for this :)
btw, I think you need more segment for the tire - you can see edges at 2nd shot.
06-05-2003, 02:37 PM
Yep, you're right, it would be a spectecular bumpy ride though...hehe
I'll pump up the value of those segments !!
06-05-2003, 04:37 PM
Cool! Some new submissions. The stats on this thread are amazing. I had no idea it would be so popular. :)
my balrog thread has more views than yhis one (by the moment, it will be soon surpassed by this super-car thread)
mine has 410 posts 24687 views at the moment
this one has 553 posts 20740 views at the moment
hehe, im still the champ.:D :D
06-05-2003, 05:22 PM
2 rage - yes, Balrog rules, but this thread was started April 20 (less a month ago), and yours was started october 2002 !! So we're growin' much faster :)
06-05-2003, 05:23 PM
What rage doesnt realize is that by checking in the thread, and adding a post to brag he is helping to beat his own record.
HA HA HA!!

yes but u are like 10 guys posting material, and on the balrog thread its just me...so that makes a big difference dont ya think?:D :D
oh and Mwhahaha you are right about that, hehe:roll:
06-05-2003, 05:39 PM
hey radar, you ought to make a render of all of the cars you have done in this thread! maybe line them all up ? to see the progression...that would be excellent.
i agree with mason....
...and yes this just added a post and a view so what??
06-05-2003, 05:47 PM
Thanks guys. My PC might explode should I try that. LOL!
Remember this thread is not meant to be a competition. I'm sure many of us play around by modeling things that never get seen by anyone else. This way we can model with no restrictions to blueprints, or concept art, etc. It has already helped me learn some new techniques in modeling.
06-05-2003, 06:09 PM
2 Rage - right, I didn't think about it :) LOTR1-2-3 is cool anyway :p
And, yes, Radarhead is right too - as for me I learned several usefull things here, so people, don't be afrade to post here your pics :*poly:
this is my first attemt hope u like.
Nice cars guys, here's another render of mine. I got another car in the works.. but im not a fast modeler.
Oh and i think is appropriate to post this here i guess, a Car Modeling compo on another forum located here:
I figure maybe some of you can enter. Would be fun :)
I have seen this before !!!
na Star, you saw this one (http://www.degodehjelperne.no/~ross/work/stuff/Thrust_SSC-7.jpg) . I got complains about the harshness of the HDRI in the background.. so i did another render of it.
06-05-2003, 08:44 PM
06-05-2003, 08:47 PM
3d-loops-fx: cool car! The taillight looks a bit plastered on though.
06-05-2003, 09:24 PM
Nice and wicked thread ^^
Too bud i suck at modelling cars.
07-05-2003, 12:25 AM
Looking good everyone!
When the pavement runs out, you might need something to tackle the rocks and muck...
I'm still working on this one.
07-05-2003, 12:48 AM
naturally, track vehicles arent very fast.. hehehe but it looks allright, weve sen faaaaaaar better from you, but hey your still working on it...
07-05-2003, 02:21 AM
well, i take a ride an sudently i realice that was late, so... i take of my belt and a couple of thing extras and, jeje i was on time :D

07-05-2003, 03:46 AM
Ok, ok... it's not that fast. But it's fast in the dirt!!:)
07-05-2003, 04:02 AM
2 BigK - nice, it looks like some kind of boad :) don't stop!
2 Radarhead - and why it's so clean then?
07-05-2003, 04:42 AM
Radarhead: Cool military vehicle! It kinda reminds me of Transformers for some reason. :)
Here's something I've worked on today... Hopefully get a more finished product by tomorrow. Please let me know what you think. I'm trying to go for a super deformed look.
07-05-2003, 04:51 AM
I think it'll be another one good design :) waiting for updates...
07-05-2003, 05:37 AM
I started to make a charicature of a porsche a little while ago, here it is so far.
07-05-2003, 05:55 AM
it's Funny :D
07-05-2003, 05:58 AM
Man, lots of new stuff still going up.
Heres my stretched version.
Sorry for the bad .jpg 3DS compression sucks. Next time I'll use photoshop.
07-05-2003, 06:24 AM
Mwhahaha, cool stuff man, the vehicle looks coooooool. Nice stuff guys, i wish this thread lasts for a few more weeks so that, i could start as well.
Radarhead : just for the record . how many cars have u modelled for this thread ? can u put all the cars in 1 pic ??? ;)
07-05-2003, 08:41 AM
Ok... here's SOME of the cars. My computer choked and weezed as it rendered this one. :) Need another gig of ram. 3 1/2 million polys.
07-05-2003, 10:26 AM
07-05-2003, 12:26 PM
Radarhead, that looks fantastic. My favorite is your first one, the red one on the right. :)

07-05-2003, 03:34 PM
that's awesome! thanks radar!
07-05-2003, 04:20 PM
OMG, radarhead! Those cars are amazing! I love your first one, the rubberband one (you missed it out :() and the hovercar!Thats a great idea for a car btw, maybe expensive but pretty cool none the less :d
07-05-2003, 04:24 PM
Thanx guys. Inctactus & Black-Robe: I knew I'd catch grief for not putting the rubberband car in there. LOL!
07-05-2003, 04:32 PM
Radarhead thats great to look at.:D
07-05-2003, 04:33 PM
Cool one Kujoe!
07-05-2003, 04:39 PM
Thank you my teacher.;)
Hi all, I just finished reading this whole thread. (great work guys)
And decided to make a model for it. I dont have experience in making cars...........please be patient !!!
07-05-2003, 04:57 PM
Just do it, Star! :)
07-05-2003, 05:04 PM
This thread is amazing. Great work guys:D
Yeah where is the rubberband car?, radarhead:grr: :)
Mwhahaha: That's awesome, does that thing have name?:)
07-05-2003, 06:48 PM
more toon style :)
07-05-2003, 06:56 PM
My cat can eat all yours cars;)
07-05-2003, 07:45 PM
IDownupI : Ok , then............model the cat. Your cat is here with us, in the real world. You must model a 3d cat.
Radarhead: Learning question, ..Wen you start polyediting a car, wich basic figure do you choose?..2 sliced spheres for the wheels, a box, a chanfer box, or just a extruded spline??
07-05-2003, 08:00 PM
IDownupI: Build a car for your 3D cat to drive.:)
3d-loops-fx: The modeling technique depends on the car shape I am going for. The little toy cars started out as a tube object with 12 sides for the wheel wells. I converted it to an Editable Poly and deleted all the polys except the front faces on the top half. You are left with a flat half-donut. I duplicate the polys and move them so that I have two wheel wells. I then start extruding edges and creating polys to get the shape I want.
The sceen cap shows the start of the toy car.
07-05-2003, 08:44 PM
they look great..mines is the blue 1
07-05-2003, 08:55 PM
ok the last one, please tell me something, i try really hard on this,
i take your advise radarhead and ill try to make something on my own
this is the update on my thing, hope u like, sorry for the amoint of turbines (i got carried away) n e way it should b the fatest with the amont of turbines on it. enjoi
07-05-2003, 09:31 PM
After seeing all the great car models in this thread, I decided I should try one too.
It's nothing original like a lot of the other cars in this thread, but this is what I've got so far. It's not finished yet, obviously, there's no interior and some more details and tweaking are needed.
Great job to everyone who has posted their car models here.:)
07-05-2003, 10:31 PM
Welcome onboard, Your yellow car is very cool, it'll be a nice vehicle.
bigk: Cool!! you'll need more air than fuel. :D
kujoe: I like your car, you learn fast , his young padawan.:ufo:
Jack3d: cool design, I like your security solution.:)
Radarhead: Thank you for your answer, I'm larning a lot. I've never tried to medel cars, is better than I thought!!
-----I've discovered somethig usefull for this kind of modelling..
I've customized my max UI like this, and I work faster.:
---Spacebar= Pan view (like photoshop)
---F3 = Display edged faces on current selected objets.
---F4 = Toggle "Use Poly subdivision".
Belive me, You'll work faster. I' try to atach my custom UI file, because is hard to find this commands.
..last posted :: I've started with my car's interior.

xboxthug13b: Could you post a smaller pic so I can test my new microscope? J/K :)
08-05-2003, 12:12 AM
Here is my post #9.
Modelling interior. I made some changes, there is another air intake. It'll need some dacals saying " NO ICECREAMS permited onboard" ..... It could be dangerous for car's engine :D
I want to finish this car (standard looking) to use it into my new web, I promise that I'll convert it in a real road-monster.... :p
08-05-2003, 12:52 AM
Looking good, 3D-loops.
Welcome to the thread Brandt.
Obviously, not a car but I've nearly perfected modeled tires, which I used to just bump. I build a row of tread then array instances around the tire tube. I do some other things to get it to look like the tread is part of the tube. Of course the rim is splined. This method is a bit more versitile then extruding polys on a tube object.
Thought you all might appreciate the image.

I'm lurking this forum from 2 weeks, but now it's time to post something ;)
I Love this thread, than i decided to post here...
this is my first car modelling, i've started with 3d only 1 month ago (3D studio)
Ah, Radarhead your style is... is.... amazing!
Well i also have a question, i used the Radarhead's photoshop bump tecnique for te doors etc.
i've assign an id to any parts of car that needs a bump (Multi/Sub-Object material)... it's the right way? coz' i have a problem now.... i don't know how to add some decals whitout covering the bumps (if i cover it, the bump is invisible in the covered zone)
PS: Sorry for the bad english, but i'm a proud "Spaghetti Eater" :p
08-05-2003, 01:18 AM
Weclome, GordaN! Thanx. Regarding the bumps: Use the same bump map in all the sub materials, using the same mapping channel as the original bump map.
08-05-2003, 01:41 AM
damned Internet Explorer :halo:
08-05-2003, 01:41 AM
uhhmm Radar can you explain it better with some screen please?
i'm goin' crazy :grr:
08-05-2003, 01:46 AM
For each of the sub materials, put the exact same bump map as the original material in each sub material. Screen shots won't make it any more clear. Does anyone else know what I mean? Or can explain it better?
08-05-2003, 01:59 AM
Well, update on my Super Speeder Car. Can be seen also in my Super Speeder thread. More detail added. More to come (i hope)
08-05-2003, 07:32 AM
heres yet another car i started, this one i intend to finish, haha this was started with the tip from radar about the half cylindar (yea i probably speeled that wrong, butits like midnight and im tired as hell) so yea . . here it is
08-05-2003, 07:34 AM
and this one
08-05-2003, 10:50 AM
Some more of my porsche. :)
08-05-2003, 01:31 PM
look great guys ,all done with this one
08-05-2003, 03:23 PM
GordaN: Nice paint job. I like the red and orange.
kujoe: The rims look good. The hood looks a little sunken in though...
Here's the latest I got for my car. Haven't had much time to do too much, but I put rims on it and finished the back.
08-05-2003, 03:26 PM
A second view...
Please let me know what you think guys. The rims were a little more difficult to model than I thought. I used a cylinder to make an outer ring. Then modeled a separate spoke, cloned it until I had 5 of them and then attached them to the ring.
What are your techniques for creating your rims? Thanks!
08-05-2003, 06:58 PM
Hi thanks ,yours looks great ,heres a new one;)
08-05-2003, 06:59 PM
08-05-2003, 09:35 PM
is going good kujoe, i think it may be your best one
an the_peel, so far sooo gooooood, it very good, keep it up:D
well i take radarhead advise and started one from the scratch, its half done, kinda 50 look, dont you think?
08-05-2003, 09:42 PM
Looking good guys!
jak3d: Looks like to need to sharpen some edges around the door, etc. Try some chamfering and you'll get it.
In the pursuit of something different, I came up with this one. I'll add more details to it.
08-05-2003, 09:49 PM
All the car look great. :D Radarhead I like your last one. Great rims...
08-05-2003, 09:54 PM
Radarhead: That set of rims on your green car are nice! Is that a bit of bump mapping on them? I still haven't learned about bump mapping yet. :(
08-05-2003, 10:00 PM
Thanx all. The rims are bumped. They looked a bit plain without it.
09-05-2003, 01:57 AM
oohhh Radar, finally i'll do that !
i put a blend for each sub object, one submaterial have the red paint, the other have a white paint (both have the same bumpmap) and i used a stripe for mask... i don't know if it's the better method, but for now that's work
09-05-2003, 01:59 AM
Good job Gordon! It wasn't that hard was it?
I think I'm done with this car. I noticed I spelled the name wrong on it. LOL!
09-05-2003, 02:20 AM
oh no it isn't hard....
i like a lot this new car, specially for the back reactors ;)
Today isn't your "good spelling day" you have spelled wrong also my nick hehehe
09-05-2003, 04:07 AM
ok i just decided to retire myself, you people are too much, i make something that i thing is good, but compare to you, well my car are just sad:(

I can't believe it, Radarhead made a mistake:D
Cool looking cars in this thread:)
09-05-2003, 07:51 AM
jak3d: The seats are big... but look way comfortable. Might fall asleap while driving. LOL! Yes, I've created competative monsters!
Brandt: The door seams look much better now.
Duck: It was NOT my day for good speelling.:p LOL!
09-05-2003, 08:17 AM
It's still not totally done, but it's getting closer now.
09-05-2003, 08:18 AM
One more view.
09-05-2003, 10:47 AM
some materials tweaks and little details added (like the neons heheheh "The Fast and the Furious" docet):
09-05-2003, 11:11 AM
brandt: I think that when you add something in that scene for the car to reflect, the color will change dramatically. Maybe to reflective. Right now your background is grey, which is why your car's paint looks a little flat. Try soem HDRI or put an environment in the scene. It would make the render look much better.
09-05-2003, 12:09 PM
A new idee, for really fast city transportation....:D :D
09-05-2003, 02:22 PM
ok, b-a-r, that good actually a good idea, how much, i kinda need one:D

09-05-2003, 04:24 PM
GordaN: very nice render! you are coming near to radarhead production! :D Can you post screenshot of your created material?
You using brazil render and hdri? Your car really shine very well, would like to learn to create such awesome reflection!
Nice thread here! i'm learning and learning! :D
09-05-2003, 04:53 PM
i've used a brazil carpaint, a bordeaux (red) for Candy color and a vivid orange for Diffuse the rest of settings are the base carpaint settings, for reflections i've used an hdri on Environment (Render --> Environment), istanced it on a material slot and change the map to Spherical (logically i've tweaked the light intensity on the map)... ahhh the hdri is an angular latitude/longitude (you can modify hdri with HRD Shop, a free tool downloadable from HERE (http://www.debevec.org/HDRShop/) )
Near to Radarhead productions?!? tnx a lot!! well, yes.... but maybe not in this millennium ehehhe maybe in 3003 i can do something similiar to Radarhead cars :p
09-05-2003, 06:03 PM
Where did all these cute chubby cars come from? They look like toys!
09-05-2003, 06:19 PM
Thanks jak3d :)
Torlok2002, I added an hdri to my scene. I haven't used hdri's before, so I don't know if I did everything properly but this is what I got.
09-05-2003, 06:38 PM
Gordan, finally some neons on the thread LOL :D:D:D
I just love it all.
Best wishes to you all,
09-05-2003, 07:21 PM
Brandt: I think the reflections look excellent.
Per requests, here's another view of the green thing...
I need to design an emblem for the nose.
09-05-2003, 07:52 PM
well, now what you think of this, jeje, i think is better :D
brandt, is looking better every time
sorry that i dont cut the image but its sims to loose some quality
09-05-2003, 07:53 PM
Brandt & GordaN: Nice, they look cute
B-A-R: Damn you:D I was thinking about making something like that, you beat me to it. But I have some other ideas
Very nice, but where do you put your feet?:o
09-05-2003, 07:58 PM
brandt, how did you make the door, its a bump map, how the hell you make it, im not really good with photoshop, i know all the basics but i can do this, i try 1 time, but if you can help me, i dont waste any time, jjee:D

3/4 rear view...
09-05-2003, 09:24 PM
2 Radarhead - This is an interesting design and good render :) and I think that it would look better with more chrome parts.
10-05-2003, 03:22 AM
Wow thats real great to look at guys;)
10-05-2003, 05:37 AM
Nice rims Kujoe. Need more power! LOL!
10-05-2003, 07:38 AM
GordaN: I understand all you had explained. but 1 terrible thing, How come in my material I dun have brazil carpaint???????? :???: :???:
10-05-2003, 08:41 AM
Ahh sorry, i forgot to explain a little thing :p
Go to the materials and choose the "brazil advanced" material, then in the "base shader" tab (it appear in the br. adv. menu) pick the carpaint shader, that's all! (note: try also the other shaders, some are very cool, like the velvet shader, i use it for the cloth).
10-05-2003, 11:53 AM
I started a hour ago and im so far (pic)
It will be a little toy car like rader head toycars.
10-05-2003, 11:56 AM
10-05-2003, 04:18 PM
Thanks learn that splineing from you..oh you want me to lift the hood to see the powerplant?;)
10-05-2003, 04:24 PM
LOL! Kujoe! Good one. :)
10-05-2003, 04:24 PM
GordaN: Ahh... thanks alot! finally got the shader! another question, you using brazil skylight? are you using other light as well? what setting you changed for the brazil render system?
10-05-2003, 04:45 PM
I'm finishing my new website and I'd like to include my car on it.
Kujoe; Nice rims, and very cool trick (hidding your power-secrets??)..;)
Radarhead: I've changed my rims, but I'm not happy with the mat's final result.. Are you using just a Raytraced material?, Do you use multilayer shader?.....I've tried to blur the enviroment, looking for a less reflection metal. If I decrease the reflection %, it looks like plastic :???:
--- , the last car (green) is my favorite. awesome.
10-05-2003, 04:56 PM
3d-loops-fx I like all the colors you came up with..I like the car too.
Radarhead.Y0ou are the best .I mean the best ..
10-05-2003, 04:57 PM
10-05-2003, 06:39 PM
eDitude: in this case i've used only a brazil skylight (in the rendering menu).
3d-loops-fx: nice car!
Radarhead: can seem unbelivable, but i've found an error on your green car ehehh, look at the doors rims.... how did the doors can be opened whit this rims? :o
10-05-2003, 08:10 PM
update of may toy car
i need some help with car paint can someone tell me how you get a car paint
10-05-2003, 08:20 PM
mcrazer read my replyes to eDitude... here i explain how to get a carpaint (there are one on this page and the other in the previous page)
10-05-2003, 09:44 PM
tanks gordan but i wand the car paint like 3d loop fx or brant if you now the page post it plz
btw what do you think of the body its not ready yet fut its coming .
10-05-2003, 10:12 PM
Thanks for the comments everyone.
jak3d, as for how I made the door, I didn't use a bump map, it's modeled in the geometry. I've included a pic showing what I did. First, select the edges that outline the door shape, then chamfer them (I got rid of any tris by welding the vertices), then select the new polygons and extrude them inwards. Hope this helps.
10-05-2003, 10:40 PM
this forums good for tips, theres probably a tutorials worth of tips here if anyone bothers to collect them. Being a beginner by your standards i cant really compete but heres proof that theres more than one way to break the sound barrier as long as the wheels survive :P
10-05-2003, 10:46 PM
3d-loops-fx: I use Brazil materials almost exclusively. I use Brazil Chrome for the wheels.
10-05-2003, 11:06 PM
Here's an update on my car... Unfortunately, I'm not very quick when it comes to dishing out these things. :(
Kujoe: You should put a viper motor in there! I think that would look awesome!
Blackwolf: I like the scene you put your car in (the rollercoaster road).
It'd be cool to see some of these cars in some kind of crazy scene...
10-05-2003, 11:11 PM
thanks brandt, i will use that, i usually detach them and inwards move the edges with 2 copys but, its a lot of work, your seems grat and much clean result
Coach handbags (http://icoachhandbags.com/)
11-05-2003, 04:49 AM
Wow wow wow I go away for a couple of days and come back and things have just gone crazy. So many new cars and there all so good. I cant coment on them all cause I have a bad memory and cant rember them all (too many hits in the head, its true I have a certificate to say I have a bad memory).
Radar that green car is awsome has a real batmobile look about it love the shape. And are those disk brakes off a motorbike?
Ok GordaN, 3d-loops-fx, Brandt, Kujoe, the_peel, ravenlp and nalhcal all great models with some brilliant ideas. I think I need to come up with some more designs even if my head implodes in the process.
Love the hidden motor Kujoe, thats a cool idea.
B-A-R. that scooter is awsome I want one..:D perfect modeling detail and textures a big thumbs up to you..
Keep the work comming and ill see if I can come up with something new soon. If you dont hear from me my head has imploded so send lots of money to my family for the funeral cause it is all your fault.."Yes you the one behind the computer"..:ufo:
11-05-2003, 07:20 AM
I am new to these forums, but i already love them!
I just went over this thread and it has some awesome artwork and creative designs features. I had a blast looking at your work.
I think i am going to even try and make something myself, hopefully it will be worthy to be posted along with your images :)
11-05-2003, 07:42 AM
Ok im back with a new model. Not sure what its going to have for power yet but ive started the shell....Ohhh it feeeeeells so good to be back..:D
11-05-2003, 07:43 AM
mcrazer : You can paint your car like us with the posted procedures in this thread. That's the way I've learnt to do it.
Radarhead: thanks again.
11-05-2003, 09:11 AM
I'm glad this thread is useful. :)
Here's a scene I started on tonight. The building textures need work but I liked the scene.
11-05-2003, 09:18 AM
Wow, Radarhead, this is simply unbelievable car!
And Sniper, your car looks great, too so far!
PS: Radar, turn your msn on ;)
11-05-2003, 09:21 AM
Thanx Rinne. Sorry about MSN, Rinne. Bed time. It's 2 am here. Must... sleeeep. :)
11-05-2003, 09:25 AM
OK, we live in bad time zones, it's 11am here :p
and a question, and a suggestion:
1. Is that a bumpmap on the ground, and at the "nobs" at the steel carriers under the roof?
2. what is that white line at the entrance? Is it the end of the background picture? I think it doesn't fit in the scene!
11-05-2003, 12:54 PM

Wow This thread is amazing i looked through most of it and it had me laughing so hard and then crying so much when i realize that us mere mortals cannot compete.
However it has made me want to make a car of my own if you kind people dont object :halo:
Simply great thread

11-05-2003, 01:56 PM
hmmm heres an update. I got my basic shape but im still not sure what I want to do for engines.
11-05-2003, 02:10 PM
I hate you Radarhead
and you Radarhead
You are the best car builder i have seen;)
Well, my first car in 3D :D
Beware of that exhaust!
The only negative thing on this "car" is that you can´t go shopping with it because it has very limited space inside :D
Very simple mesh, but its ok i think :) (for now ;))
11-05-2003, 02:24 PM
nice one kite..
great scene radarhead but it seems to empty...try ading stuff to it
nice to see u back sniper..and i see u came back with vengance..lol
11-05-2003, 02:25 PM
hahah kiTe it's fun-tastic! ;)
what kind of material have you used for tyres?
Ok, ok ... its my first car ever!! what do you think of it so far?
And how the f.... can i make it round at the places i want.
Nice one Star :D Reminds me of some Videogame
Well if you want this car smooth then first put in more detail then apply a Mesh Smooth Modifier (3ds Max) and play a bit with the weightening options of the Modifier :) (I hope this is correct :D)
Well, err do you use Max?
The Tire-Material ist just the Rubber-Floor standard material in Maya :D I´m not very experienced with Materials yet ;)
11-05-2003, 03:22 PM
Ha ha great work Kite love it..:D
Marty I meant to say this b4 but forgot. Dont be scared to have a go. I think some of the funniest and what I would say cars that have really made this a great thread have been pretty simple. I think all of the cars are awsome it doesnt have to be complicated to be a great car. Looking forward to seeing something from you..:)
Thanks xboxthug13b ive had a bit of a break from the creative side of things but still dont have any brilliant ideas. My brain just doesnt work that way..:(
Looking good so far star. What do you mean "And how the f.... can i make it round at the places i want." what exactly do you want to know? And how much do you know already? Im guessing you want to know about mesh smooth or something like that. Also if you tell us what program you are using it will make it easier to help you out..:)
P.S. aww here is my latest render. Motors borrowed from star wars..:P some kind of super fast hyper drive type thing..lol
Thanks Sniper :D
I´m looking/trying for a realy niiiiice Car/Metal/Chrome Shader for Maya :) Looks nice what i´ve got there, but not realistic ^^
Also trying to make cool-looking glass like your window or light-glasses but no success :P
Nice car, Hyperdrive 1.3 guaranteed :D But what happens to the 2 rear Motors when the 2 front Motors fire up :D
11-05-2003, 04:06 PM
Ahh Kite its not actually 2 motors on each side..:P The front bit is the fuel combustion cell. then it runs through to the back part where the thrust is generated. Heres another pic. Im trying to get that I had a couple of jet engines lying around so I slapped them on my car look but im not really sure If it looks good or not. Maybe I need to have the motors tied on with rope..lol
11-05-2003, 04:16 PM
Thanks Sniper Heres my attempt Still needs alot of work but it's my first car so bear with me.
11-05-2003, 04:31 PM
Hmm marty it might be your first car..but there is nothing bad about it..Thats a really good model. What sort of things do you usually model?
Another shot of mine.
Time for some sleep now.
11-05-2003, 04:44 PM
damn cool Sniper! ;)
11-05-2003, 05:13 PM
some have seen it but some have not...it doesnt have any extreme powerplant but its my design....it's not finished yet either...
11-05-2003, 05:22 PM
Wow, everything looks great here!
Radarhead: Your scene is great! I love it, but yes, kind of does seem a bit empty.
Sniper: I love your car! Especially the little tubes that go to the front...
Kingcobra: Exelent model, now all you need are some turbines :D
I'm working on my little car that I will try to finish soon so I can post it in here...
11-05-2003, 06:31 PM
Nice work all!!
kite: cOol design!!
Its time to make another car........a funny car!!
I've learned a lot here...... thanks everybody, (thanks rararhead)
11-05-2003, 06:35 PM
I am using 3d studio max 5.0, and I dont have much experience with 3d modelling! I have only made some simple models.
When i use meshsmooth i dont get the right results. i want to make smooth ereas and areas wich are less smooth.
Can you give me some help on how to do it right ?!
:D Thanks for your positive comments :D
Well, got one off-road wheel :D
Now the rest of the car :)
I can´t geht a proper "rubber" and "chrome" material
Like this Brazil-Chrome stuff :) Or the glass of 3d-loops car, great :D Somehow Maya MUST be able to produce those materials :D Maybe i´ll try mental ray? :D 1.5 is free :)
12-05-2003, 03:23 AM
This thread is A-L-I-V-E. LOL! Great models keep coming.
I'm still working on the textures, lighting and more stuff in the scene. Maybe some kind of robotic vehicle in the background. Don't know yet. This is a pre-composite render thus the white door opening.
Someone had a question about the rivets and floor. The rivets are modeled and the floor is bumped.
12-05-2003, 04:15 AM
Hey all, love all the cars and if I could half of this I would include my own work :D
Just wondering why no one is really submitting any wireframes for their work. Would be good to see how they have all been constructed...
Just an idea.
12-05-2003, 04:42 AM
Ok, here's my contribution:)
It's a modern Monowheel.
Still needs engine, handlebar, brakes, front and rearlights, will be streetlegal when it's done:D.
12-05-2003, 04:43 AM
Here's the wire without subpatch(meshsmooth for you Maxers) applied
12-05-2003, 04:50 AM
Hahaha, that is pretty cool... Did you get inspired by South Park???
12-05-2003, 04:55 AM
No:) I saw this guy on Ripleys believe or not, that makes these for real and they are streetlegal too.
12-05-2003, 06:36 AM
12-05-2003, 06:41 AM
12-05-2003, 07:06 AM
travis_jinx: No one's posting wireframes because this thread is about ideas not necessarily about modeling. I'm sure if anyone requested a wire of a specific model, it would be posted.
Duck: Good one! I'd thought of doing that too! :)
12-05-2003, 08:38 AM
nice work guys :D
duck, lol this one is funny :D nice work
12-05-2003, 08:38 AM
2 Duck - :)
12-05-2003, 08:50 AM
note to self..... must get brazil plugin for sky light feature..... :) nice nice work
Can i have one of these Babys Duck? :D

I'm still pretty new to 3dmax, but theres a baby stroller.
It's not done, but I don't really wanna finish it...seems that i've been throwing away WIP's lately.

12-05-2003, 11:01 AM
wow, this is a fantastic thread. Radarhead you once again made my desktop background of the week. The green version of the car in the cool garage. If I wasn't knee deep in a project at the moment I would make my own car. Every image in this topic just screams with creativity. I just hope this is still around at the end of the month..unless new changes are ordered...in that case I hope this thread is still here by the end of next month.

well, this is not done yet, and this is just clay and wire model..... will materialize later when done... but the idea is.... i fly will be under the cup on a spring with a penny on it for it to be the seat.... the can is WD-40 and then you have 2 zippo lighters in which i will use my Phoenix plugin for the flames.... glass is used as a protector from the flames.... the landing gear are toothpicks and olives.... and the frame is 2 penciles and 6 popsickle sticks..... still adding stuff but didnt want to put anything that fly's cant get a hold of lol ;)
p.s. this is finally the first thing i put on here lol, been thinking of something to make that would be unique and finally decided on a flying fly jet type thing :) so enjoy and will have updates
*EDIT* i will make a reg car after this, just thought this would be cool :)
12-05-2003, 03:57 PM

I know you're using Max, but do you know(or anyone else) how to make springs, like under my seat on the monowheel? They are not very good when you see them up close.

Jak3d: If the dark area disappears when you hide the car, ask yourself if there is any intersecting geometry that is in front of the back of the headlight reflector. That's what it looks like.
12-05-2003, 07:48 PM
The headlights seem to be as bright as they can be. What likely makes them look wrong compared to what you think they should look like is a lack of glow or flaring. Normally, if you look at a car with the headlights in your face, the headlights are so much brighter than everything else that expose more than they should. What I mean is that instead of lighting up the small area of your retina that would form the picture of the headlights in your head, the light leaks a bit and more of your retina, or more of the film in a camera, or more space on the surface of a CCD camera gets hit, and it forms a glow. So, try adding a glow or lens flare effect to the lights and they should look more realistic.

i dont mind to sound stupid radar;) i kinda think the problem was another time the reflection, and i was looking for another solution, because the light vulve are right, the intersection was behind the so i miss that, also i think the glow that zytrex say may look good.
radar, i hope you dont mind that i have posted my car here?
if you dont mind i fix the problem and i ?ll be back:D
Hey Rubberduck, i thought of that thingy being a GREAT vehicle for selling to poor city people :D
Well, all i need is a great idea for a cool chassis for this tire :D
I´m kinda proud of those Materials :D
13-05-2003, 12:17 AM
Jak3d: No rules here, bud. Just remember that you want your headlight to still look like a headlight even when it is turned "off." Just work on the reflections for it and it will be fine.
Good work to all.
Edit: jak3d: also remember that the shape of the headlight reflector is critical in getting it to reflect properly and look right.
