My Car's Faster Than Your Car

Ok... I couldn't resist the temptation set forth by Kingcobra and Sniper. Here's my version of an outrageous car. This is mom's car... dad's is much faster. :) Let me know what you think. This car was started as a joke but it started looking pretty cool so I thawt I'd post it.

Ok these are the wheels and b4 you say how does it drive. Remember that a jet powered cars dont need axles. Brakes are internal in the rim...hmm they work with magnets yea thats it. Lol. How it steers well thats a diferent question.. hmm Ill work something out :P

How did you do the wicked bitumen texture (i dont know how to spell bitumen...he he). It is very realistic...

Yea I started it about 10 min after radar started this thread. The bitumen is just a standard max texture. I cheated a bit but cause the interior is just pieces of my porsche interior that I had already made. But everything else I made today.

Ok here is my wheel setup its really quite simple when you can see it properly. there is the inner rim and the outer rim the tyre is connected to the outer rim and the outer rim can rotate on the inner rim. The inner rim is connected to the chassis via a pivot with an arm and the chrome steering rod running across to the cockpit. its not very detailed but its all there full working steering..:D Hope this is clear enough to understand lol..

This one is for him lol. Its got a fuel injected blown v8 for getting around town and 4 jet engines for out on the freeway lol

He he love the f 16 car Radar could you get the same effect of that heat haze if you say made a sphere behind the jet and applied a bump map to it with raytraced refraction?

You could get that effect by making one or more planes, maybe adding a noise mod to the mesh, add a nose bump and make it clear and refractive. I don't think it would have worked in my render because the backgound was the environment mapped to screen and objects won't refract a screen-mapped environment. It would refract it if it was a picture applied to a plane though. I just didn't take the time to do it.

I'm almost done with the body and stuff, and I'm about to start on the materials. I have to clue how to do good shiny metal or car paint (i kinda have a clue on how i'm gonna do the headlights) so if one of you gurus would point me to a good car paint and chrome tutorial, i would be grateful.

Sniper:- probably real easy but how did you do the blue engin jets for you last model, know any good tuts? i use MAX 5 btw.

Gahn the engine jets are just a fire effect but instead of being yellow and red it is light blue and dark blue. To make this you make a sphear gizmo then go into rendering environment add effect fire. pick the sphear gizmo and set the colors. Its as easy as that..:)

P.S. Sphear gizmo is located under the create menu, helpers, atmosheric apparatus or something like that..lol its just a standard max thing no plugin required.

gahn, try making a car anyway. you'll get some good experience by it. I have severe noobitis, and no copy of 3ds max, so i'm in no position to really compete, but I made a car anyway. Or i'm making a car, rather.

All i have to do now is the materials, which I am going to work on next time I get some time with 3ds. Wont be for a while tho :(

Regarding modeling tire tread. I use a different technique. I model the tread separate from the tire then array the tread around the tire and it looks like this:

Look Radar, you are not only good at modeling and textuing, but somehow you set up the environment soooo well so that the car actually looks realistic. I dont know how you do it. I try to play around with Brazil, but I cant get it looking good dammit!

Thanks guys but setting up my scenes is more than simple. I wish I could say that I go through a bunch of steps that I pioneered to get that look but I don't.

Skylight, specular-only light and an HDRI in the environment slot under the rendering menu. That's it! Simplicity. Oh, yes... I make my ground plane 2-sided so that no light comes from below.

Yea the cobra uses Nitro as the start and smokes up the tires. It gets the jump on the jet car cause You know how it is tyring to get your jet car off the line lol. But then the jet car winds up and flys past the cobra.
Im going to make a few more parts. This is just the start but there will be a section b4 this part zooming out from the cars sitting on the start line and then another shot chasing them from behind after they go past the camera. The shake at the end still needs some work but ill get there..lol

Radar the smoke as the car takes of is just a fire effect, set up as an explosion with the colors set to white. But while it looks good from a distance its not so good close up cause the smoke just doesnt come from the right places. A while ago I done an animation with my Fiat 500 doing a burnout this was up close and I used a particle effect that actually had the smoke comming out of the tires. It worked very well except the render time was huge lol. Ill see if I can find this short clip and upload it. Not sure where its gone lol. I need to organize my folders.

Dragot, I tend to agree with you, even though these car thread from the Pros are great (awesome actually), I think that the forum message is slightly off track. All the threads from the really good modelers that know the tricks are being posted in, but the threads that the slightly novice or comment requiring people are being forgotten. Maybe there should be some kind of a change? I dunno. It just seems that the ones that are allready good seem to be getting way more attention than the users that REALLY need information and crits. I have had but one comment in my woman model thread so far...(but that's not too bad)

You need to download the plug-in from Splutterfish.com that will allow Max to be able to use HDRI.

kujoe: you just need to dump the HDRI.bmi into the 3dmax/plugin. just into the plugin folder will do, dun have to write any path to the plugin.ini.
Actually i read some tutorial, you need brazil to run hdri mapping, max render don't recognise hdri.
When you have drop it into the plugin folder, in max go to render>environment> choose a hdri image> look for .hdr extension. if you find it means you install it correctly.

HDRshop is used to "unwrap" the hdri probes so they map correctly in the environment. Max does recognize HDRI with the plug-in from Splutterfish. You just can't light a scene with it but it does show up in reflection/refractions with Max renderer.

radar: if i put 1 skylight and render using brazil, do i need to activate light tracer? what kind of setting do i need to set for the brazil render.?

Brazil is a seperate rendering engine from Max. Choose Brazil as the rederer in the render dialoge and ignore Max settings such as light tracer and radiosity. The Brazil Skylight is not a light that you place in the scene. It's a lighting setting in the render dialogue.
