Welcome to the third challenge of The Speed Sculpting competition. The only place to sculpt.
Rules:
1. The competition will last two weeks, which will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting the entries -- at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition (this week's provided by forum user Crimson King, it is the same basemesh as in the Manimal competition), from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic.
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here.
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt is a shoulders, torso and head sculpt only, do not attempt to extend this into a full-body sculpt.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging, let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt. What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpts you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc, but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "manage attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can have multiple entries, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here, and your FINAL entry in this thread (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=58972).
These rules apply to everybody taking part, there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide.
Prizes
The main prize of the '3D Print' is going to be awarded on alternate competitions, so for this challenge the prizes are as follows:
The winner can choose any 2 3DTotal products from our shop (http://shop.3dtotal.com/) from the ranges of 3DTotal Books, 3DTotal DVDs (all textures, shorts and training) and 12 month mag subscriptions.
Time limit - 4 hours
Deadline - Tuesday June 10th, 10:00 AM GMT +0
Subject - Supersoldier.
This time it's about supersoldiers, commandos, siege veterans, muscle packed battleworn gods of the warzones. The big guys, carrying the big guns. We're interested in how you can convey their personality through no more than a torso, shoulders and head. Show the awesomeness of their experience, maybe sculpt in some added appendages ( bionic eyes, iron muscles bulging through the skin ), some scars from a lucky bullet that somehow managed to scratch him.
The supersoldier is the guy that tells the rest of the army to take five and watch some fireworks. It's easy to sculpt a mean soldier, but it takes skill to sculpt a super soldier and convey all his traits, personality and experience into the final entry.
As before, we're giving you the option of having eyes, there's a separate .obj file provided or you can add eyes yourself as sub-tools (or software equivalent) but you have to pick one or the other of these options, not both. The race of your character must be human. No aliens or other creatures this time.
I'm gonna go pick up my rifle and stimpacks...

Not necessarily. You can make Rambo or Terminator, but just keep in mind that people who are going to vote, will look not only at how good the sculpt is executed but also at how original it is :)
As for race,I guess it would be better if we stick with humans.

Can we detach a part of the mesh and reattach it elsewhere to make the sculpt easier? I figure as long as it's the same mesh, it shouldn't make a difference...

katana, this hasn't been brought up before, and even though you're right it is the same base mesh, I wouldn't really agree with detaching-moving-reattaching, because it's something that most other people won't do, and we've got the whole "advantage" thing going again.

Is this limited to modern/futuristic soldiers? Was thinking of doing something historic but all posts seem to be future focussed. Couldn't see any rules to say I can't do a historic supersoldier but just thought I'd check before I kick off my sculpting.

gumby666: The theme probably has a sci-fi focus, but I don't find it wrong if you try something historic. Go for it!

Man just make a buff guy. Supersoldier is a term that usually means genetically manipulated but horse steroids are good too (As you can see Sylvester Stallone, or Rambo which is his real name, is on the poster picture so we're not gonna prevent you from making a nowadays looking kinda guy) ;)
I don't think Vikings or Spartans qualified for supersoldiers, maybe you can add a futuristic twist to whatever you're making?

can we use a different base next time please
either that or make the teeth a subtool, id rather not waste time pulling them around and keeping them under control.
MonteCristo
28-05-2008, 12:37 PM
Yo, J. You can make them a subtool.
EDIT: The following assumes you use ZBrush.
Go to Polygroups and select AutoGroups.
Then in Subtools hit GrpSplit.
This will make all seperate elements into subtools.

Oh, hell yeah. It's absolutely allowed. It would be damn near impossible otherwise. :) I hate that you've been struggling along with this all this time.
The sub-tools and eyes rules are more to prevent stupid amounts of deviation from happening. Last time, Spaceboy used the teeth (I think) to make a hat. This to me is fair usage, as it is a small part of the overall character.
If however, someone were to use the teeth mesh to make another character, or a tree, or something big like that, this would not be fair usage, and we would not allow it.
The eye rule at the beginning is a guide to ensure that people don't have 4 eye meshes instead of 2. Actually, this time around, I squished an eye to make a cigar. I reckon that's fair usage too, as her left eye is missing. But others may disagree with this. Then again, It would be possible for me to use some internal mouth geometry to squeeze out a cigar... So who cares really?

ClassicGamer-3DT
28-05-2008, 02:47 PM
bgen - Well I think you've got enough character in the face, he's certainly battlework, possibly you could add more scars, missing flesh etc on the torso. Or you could add a bandana, or earing(s) to go with the head tie. Or you could go for the future style and add cybord elements, let your imagination run wild.
Sathe - Wow that is stunning, a bit of a Warcraft feel to it I think, but my it's outstanding detailing. :)

MGery
28-05-2008, 02:54 PM
Bgen- I think for the next 2 hours, you can probably get more depth into the body since he's shirtless. Muscle sinew, scars, etc. The bandana knot on the back could be added and cloth folds lifted from the back of his neck so it doesn't look like it's melded to his skin. You did great for first 2 hours, the next 2 hours will be amazing! good work man!

Welcome, buzz! The time limit is a matter of trust, yes. You could spend 10 hours on something and say it took you 20 minuts, but the fact is, after about 4 hours ( time limit ) on this competition, if you had the talent/skill/experience to do something, you would have done it already anyway. Looking forward to seeing your entry.

Yeah basically. If i get a whiff of people regularly taking the pi$$ with the time limit, we'll impose something more strict. But we'd really rather not. We're keeping the tasks reasonably small. The key is fun, and the opportunity for people to practice. If the task was too big, people might not have time to take part, particularly professionals.
You know how it is, it's often the same with our own personal projects, we all tend to make them too big, and never finish, or barely start. These are nice and bite size for a reason. If someone cheated big-time, it would be obvious.

MonteCristo-3DT - Does your character have battle scars, or whip scars? ;)
Sathe - Great start, I love the armour.
hey guys, i'm so very new and novice to 3d. i'm about 2 hours into my eva wild model/tutorial and i'm no where near where you guys are, claiming to take only a few hours.
not calling anyone a liar or going on about the "is it really only taking 4 hours" comments.. i have more of a question.
am i slow just because i'm new? i'm a multimedia designer and i understand that it take time to get better at things, like, i'm a guru with photoshop and can turn out good product in minutes.. but with 3D i litterally feel handicapped or as though i'm working with one hand tied down. it's just really awkward to me still.
a few more questions:
in these comps are you guys using pre-made models you've already worked on? like, some of these busts are quite complex and then on top of that on a lot of them there are amazing amounts of detailing and scarring. or is everyone starting from scratch? is it apps like zBrush that make modeling these things go so fast? if so, how much are you actually doing in zBrush? do you model in an app liek 3ds max first and then take it to zBrush? if so, how MUCH detail do you general add before taking it into zBrush, or do you take the character in smooth and do all the detailing in zBrush??
i'm just so impressed and beginning to feel like i'm just not progressing fast enough. i want to be good SO BAD! thanks for reading and for showing such awesome work. and the idea of having mini comps to help people practice is just amazing.
sorry for the novel, thanks for reading.

another try going for the masai super soldier :p 40 mins in
MGery
28-05-2008, 09:14 PM
Haam, yep it can take awhile but alot of practice makes it go quick. It's like drawing really. But no, everyone doing the competition starts with the default mesh that's provided at the beginning of the thread, and we just sculpt out our ideas.
AH! that makes more sense. to take the time and model and then do all the detail that's going on here would take longer. And I didn't realize that there were any kind of materials provided at the start.
okay, whew, i'm feeling better, thanks! more practice, check!
PS: That KID SOLDIER is killer, his expression is heart breaking.

haam - I havent been modeling for very long either so I hear what youre saying. In the beginning youll be very slow because youre new, but these challenges will help to push your abilities. Its one thing to be able to have an idea of what you want to do, its another thing to know the program and workflow/techniques to get what you want. Theres multiple ways to burn a bush, some are faster than other.
For me, Im very inexperienced with regular 3d apps, so I do almsot all of my work in Zbrush. For these challenges, youll start off with the provided base mesh, rough out your design on the model, divide and refine until you have a completed and detailed model. Good luck!
Edit: Heh, guess I posted a bit too late

spaceboy412 - Ill do my best and hope not to disappoint! :D
i can't get enough - i have this tough supersoldier in my head. heavy amor type guy who is a old fashioned blacksmith as well.
hea will get some good armour. i am really happy how he turns out
I just joined this forum, how do you know that everyone is actually following the time limit ? All we need to upload are screen grabs with no digital time stamps. I guess we have to trust each other.
Basically we use a trust model. There is enough experience in here
with just about every 3D application on the planet to spot any potential anomalies.
So technically while anyone can fudge the numbers a bit, it would really
be a pointless endeavor to do so as the idea is to increase the skills of the
user base. *shrug*
You can easily see who has the anatomy / sculpting skills in here. That
skill coupled with an expert / professional level of technical skill in the
application ( Z-Brush or Mudbox ) can produce some outstanding results
in a very short period of time.
Oh yeah. . . someone whip up a Duke Nukem :) Cause those alien bastages
shot down his ride ! lol

I'll record my entry, so you can see all , will type more when not on iPhone
hey guys, i'm so very new and novice to 3d. i'm about 2 hours into my eva wild model/tutorial and i'm no where near where you guys are, claiming to take only a few hours.
not calling anyone a liar or going on about the "is it really only taking 4 hours" comments.. i have more of a question.
am i slow just because i'm new? i'm a multimedia designer and i understand that it take time to get better at things, like, i'm a guru with photoshop and can turn out good product in minutes.. but with 3D i litterally feel handicapped or as though i'm working with one hand tied down. it's just really awkward to me still.
a few more questions:
in these comps are you guys using pre-made models you've already worked on? like, some of these busts are quite complex and then on top of that on a lot of them there are amazing amounts of detailing and scarring. or is everyone starting from scratch? is it apps like zBrush that make modeling these things go so fast? if so, how much are you actually doing in zBrush? do you model in an app liek 3ds max first and then take it to zBrush? if so, how MUCH detail do you general add before taking it into zBrush, or do you take the character in smooth and do all the detailing in zBrush??
i'm just so impressed and beginning to feel like i'm just not progressing fast enough. i want to be good SO BAD! thanks for reading and for showing such awesome work. and the idea of having mini comps to help people practice is just amazing.
sorry for the novel, thanks for reading.
Sathe
29-05-2008, 12:45 AM
Me and Joe, "jharford" do the comp together so if the "screenshot" process takes longer than 5 minutes we lay down the *itch slap glove.
It also means working faster as your trying to keep up to the other person.
AA-ron
29-05-2008, 12:46 AM

M_Cederstrom
29-05-2008, 12:53 AM
In the end if you lie about your time, you are only cheating you self in the long run. The time limit is to push you ability to the limit, and then some every time. The real prize is the skill you learn in the comp. :D
Guhhh and Freespace - I'm working her baby. :D

hey fellers.
I found a screen capture program that works perfect, flawless quality. and FREE!
download the software
http://camstudio.org/
then download the techsmith codec, its the same codec used in camtasia!
http://www.techsmith.com/download/codecs.asp
then you have a free version of camtasia pretty much.

Probably, ZB3 was a free upgrade and is a pretty dramatic improvement. You should definately make the jump, ASAP.
I've had to use ZB2 again after getting used to ZB3, not much fun. People have done amazing things with ZB2, but going back to it now really tests my patience. Everything just feels really flat and slow without the perspective, shadows, matcap shaders, and boosted performance.

Will try that, the mouth has been a tough nut.:xyz:

hulahuga, Im not sure anymore if Mudbox has an inflate brush, but if it does, use that alot when defining forms, its way easier to make masses like lips with it, Cheers.

I've checked your desolator and I can just say WOW!
It kinda reminds me of duke nukeem:)

Ok, here is 3 hours into my second Entry.
This guy is from the same universe or army as the old one as i wanted the sculpting capture to show the same techniques i used as on the first.
Will have the 3rd part of the capture session up in an hour.

hulahuga: Don't forget to subdivide your mesh, as you sculpt into finer details. For "inflate" you can use the Bulge brush.
Sathe: I would love to see how you sculpt armor. Forget meshsmoothing in 3dsmax, sculpting is the way to go for armor, after what I've seen from you in these entries. Hope that shows up in your vids.

Thanks kazmamurat.
Freespace, check the "Members sculpting videos" section. I have the first two parts up now. 3rd is uploading as we speak.

I think he means a bit further, like 3-4. its impossible to define details at subd 1 ;)

Yeah. I had just understood how to make a subdiv i Mudbox on that picture :o
Did you use a custom brush or something on that armor?
Sathe
30-05-2008, 08:23 AM
The armor is just painted with the standard and Flatten brush, then just mask it off and ad a Stone layer.
I will have the 3Rd part up in about 20 minutes now which shows the process better. Its simple really, i can't share the alpha though because its from a bought texture collection.

I'm really not sure that i'll get around to finishing this one as i'm trying to finish a robot for another challenge(mostly challenging myself in trying to box model in zbrush).
anyway i took a break from that and did this, its 70mins worth, still a long way to go to what i'd like. anyway, its someone who had half of his head sliced off in battle, after healing he went back and found the part of his skull, then had it encrusted with fine jewels and mosaics (which i havent done yet). i imagined quite an elaborate story for this one and will post that if/when i finish.
great models so far, looking forward to more refinement over the week.

Hey vongn these videos are really helpful , but could you record with showing an interface ? I would like to see on which subdivision you are building forms(cause I have problem when to start detailing mouth and eyes in Mudbox :/), and the brushes using for different parts.

Realistically, probably nothing :smug:. I'm kinda running out of time and theres a couple areas I want to clean up. I do agree though. See what I can do.

Nope, never knew that. I've always wondered how people were able to get crisp zbrush captures like that. Thanks for letting me know.

Probably, ZB3 was a free upgrade and is a pretty dramatic improvement. You should definately make the jump, ASAP.

Thanks for letting me know it's free...I think that's in my price range! Also, thanks to Mgery for the word as well. I went and registered for the upgrade this morning...waiting for reply.
