I've been watching some documentaries lately and maybe a theme like Evolution would be good. I mainly imagine people painting animals and creatures, but it wouldn't have to be limited to only earthly beings. Plus, people could paint creatures from the past (how predecessors looked like or how they could have looked like) or the future (how present beings could evolve in the far future, either naturally or due to some major event).

this is probably not your typical speed painting Idea, but how about a small size ( maybe 3 panel comic). of what i have know idea, but some thing that tells a little story or how a guns work, or a transformation of what ever. ;D with no words at all.

i like pgomez's idea of a mounted charachter. allowing all genre's so it could be anything from guy riding horse, witch on a broom, some dinosaur/alien mount or a guy on some legged robot, etc.

Idea 1:

I have an idea. How about a theme of the ocean. But than with a sinking object in it. And that object can be object of choise, so i can be a planecrash with lots flames, or a train half on fire with people on it trying to escape, or lots of people drowning, or a refridgerator with a sea filled with chees and milk, or a car with broken glass etc, you name it. What you think is worth drawing.

Idea 2:

Or another theme is, how about you got frozen in for 40 years and you just woke up out of that, how would the sky look like. So if you where in the sky, above the clouds, what would the city look like that has been build there.

Idea 3:

An old arena, like the collesium, but you can choose the battle type. So instead of lions eating humans, you could make a street fighter battle in there, or perhaps alot of bunkers with a swat team trying to defeat the backery guys, trowing large bread sticks to their faces. Or the egypts who have their small pyramids in their arena's calling upon horus to defeat the smily gory amazon creatures the roam the arena.

Idea 4:

Another idea is depth. Create the best picture that pictures perspective. So the point is to create great depth inside the picture, perhaps a picture that makes you dizzy, from a person that stands close to camera and is watching to the ground, but its drawn in a way that makes you dizzy.

Idea 5:

Vegetation, who can make the most convincing city that has been taken over by growing elements. Plants, trees, monkeys, birds, moss, people cannot live in this city anymore and the city is totally crumbled, filled with vegetation and animals.

Idea 6:

Create the tennis court from the future. Say 2078, it sounds stupid because a tennis court isn't very interesting, therefore its a good concept idea. Try to see who can create the most convincing new idea.. Do whatever you want with this concept. I like thisone.

Idea 7:

This idea is based upon the fact that people get bullied alot in highschool. Can you draw the emotion of what that feeling would look like. For example a very black maze , with large shadows of the people that bully you and a small jar with you in it, stuck and you cant do anything. So draw emotion. Its very hard to do, but also a challenge.

Hope this where some fun ideas and perhaps you find something in it that is worthy for a challenge...

Okay. A good universal suggestion...

Ever watch those campy live action Japanese shows like Kamen Rider, Ulraman or Super Sentai? Something like that could be fun. Especially the giant robot battles.

here's a few more that might tickle someones pickle:
How's about taking any inanimate everyday object, mobile/cell phone, laptop, mug, chair, whatever and make into something ominous and life threatening, make it a huge mechanical death trap...whatever, just take a normal object and make it as dangerous as possible.

how about a picture that represents an emotion, so make the picture a bit abstract, but shows an emotional theme, this could run with things like love, happiness, sadness etc, it all works, I was mainly thinking about environment rather than people to widen the range to more than expression.

Maybe something culinary. Like creative ways to cook an egg or sea creatures working at a sushi bar or the gourmet kitchen of the future.

Edit: Or how about this; If you've ever seen an old sci-fi, you know that we were supposed to be living like the Jetsons or getting Lost in Space like the Robinson family by time this new mellinium rolled around.

So how about a theme of '2009 according to old sci-fi.' Maybe we should be thwarting numerous giant creatures with the help of Ultraman or fighting aliens in transistor powered exo-suits or maybe jetpack-clad secret agents should be spying in an outerspace cold-war. All by 1997.

I dunno. Just spitballing.

My best guess is it's a fan trend that started either amongst Japanese fans, or amongst American fans who happen to like Japanese steampunk stuff. If you google it, you'll find all sorts of craziness related to it. Lightsabers, ships, droids, characters, even Star Wars figures that people have steampunked out. I recently went to Megacon here in Florida, and there were a few people who came dressed as Star Wars characters with that sort of motif going on.

I don't quite understand it, but it looks pretty cool sometimes. I threw in the suggestion because I was trying to come up with something familiar that could be made somewhat abstract.

And that's the best I can describe it.

The 'wake up a dragon' idea is funny. I also really like the idea of an anime show poster, though I think that would alienate the painters whose strengths are in painting rather than illustration.

How about this:

So you've gotten drunk and cheated on a test. It looks like you're going to get off scot-free when a GIANT MONSTER starts terrorizing your city/town/village/suburb, and now the military has gotten involved. What does that giant monster look like? Godzilla, King Kong, the Kraken from Clash of the Titans, Clover the often-out-of-focus Cloverfield monster? What is the military going to do to stop the monster? A big effin' gun, a special anti-monster unit, the Megazord, a 'Give Love a Chance' concert?

Where are we viewing this from. Did you get involved or go back to the bar? Maybe you're still cheating on your test or oversleeping.

Still Life, every (digital or not) painter-to-be should try it at least once (Examples from Google (http://images.google.com/images?q=still+life&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en-us&sa=N&um=1&imgtype=photo&as_st=y)).

There are various challenges this gives; like properly exploring light and colours.

As you may be aware, General Motors is bankrupt. This creates a problem in more ways than job losses. The Transformers may have to look for different car manufacturers for their disguises in future movies. If you were a desparate protoform, looking for any disguise whatsoever, what kind of humiliating vehicle would you turn yourself into. A Prius, a Nissan Cube, a Smart Car. Maybe something awesome, like the supposed new VW 'Thing' concept.

The rule is, it has to be a new vehicle, it can even be a concept, but it can't be a GM owned brand.

It's 2009. Lost in Space promised me interplanetary space exploration, personal robots, evil scientists and consumer-level back-mounted rockets by 1997. Here we are a decade later and all we have is evil scientists. Those very evil scientists are still working hard to further space travel. Maybe one day we will colonize the Moon, or some other place that isn't earth.

What is your vision of the future. Create your own idea of the ideal space colony. Heck, you could even go all Frank Miller on us and make it a decrepid waste heap where space mauraders lurk. Your choice.

Think about it. You've probably seen something that would be better or... more interesting... if it were combined with another thing.

Maybe a juicer-toaster hybrid, a motorcycle/jetski/snowmobile, a martial arts ballet, splinter cell/ghost recon, Gundam/Evangelion/Megazord, USS Enterprise/Millenium Falcon, Deloreon/Tardis/Bill & Ted time machine, Dancing banana/ NumaNuma guy, sumo wrestling/beach volleyball, etc.

TONS of possibilities, all based on the twisted things a person would merge together for their amusement. It would be awesome.

Okay, so all I do is drop ideas. But we need more ideas to see more fantastic art.

So I got to thinking, we're mostly guys on this board. So what would be a stretch for guys? It has to be something that is useful in concept design but probably doesn't cross the mind of a man very much. Then it hit me: Fashion design.

So my suggestion for the next topic is:

RUNWAY

You basically design the next big thing in runway fashion according to you. It can be as simple or as outlandish or as chic as you want. It gives the artist an opportunity to explore an area of art they might not have ever thought much about before and is wide open to the imagination. Just watch Zoolander some time.
