Eka, her hair needs to be wider, when you look at her from the front. Great job! She annoyed the hell out of me in the film, though. :)

This is Betty Boop as she would be today. Time was up before I could go crazy with the wrinkles - maybe I'll retopo it and finish later.

Been working on Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force for a couple hours, not really satisfied with how I used the mesh, I should have spent more time on it before I started doing into details, especially the eyes. I'll probably leave it as it is now and start something else :)

Thanks to Kazmamurat/Ralf Stumpf for the shader, hope you don't mind me using it :o

dude i am starting to really hate zbrush. something i can model in 20 min. i cant do in 4 hours with zbrush. i know i am new at this program but dam i look at ur guys stuff and cry. if i can model my own base mesh for the task i am trying to do i may have better success..... ok i feel a lil better now. guess its back to zbrush and more headaches.

btw stuff look awesome guys.....and gals

i saw a commercial for Space Ghost - i so totally dips him.
I am gonna make him today or tomorrow.... It was on my favorite shows as a kid next to Fraggles (not a cartoon)
but also Fraggle Rock(Cartoon), oh boy oh boy Flash Gordon :D anyone remembers the good old Herculoids ?? and let's now forget the Jetsons... i allways wanted to have a small flying ship like they had.
and let's not forget the old Charlie Brown and his dog Snoopy dog yo !! :D

for some still looking for a idea, while listing those toons i foung this website. http://www.80scartoons.net

so back to buisniss :D.
Maxter1 - astroboy looks good. make his hair edge a little cripser and give him some eyebrows in the remaining time... good job.

Ordibble Plop - freaky, i never liked her singing in the cartoons. - great sculpt dough :lame:

cojoMan - Hellsing rulz - don't like the ending of the anime dough.

ianchaos - nice sculpt so far. Popeye need a big jaw dough that's his trade mark !

fireantz - *dance* i just bought the dvd recently great movie. Totoro is and awsome character and you sculpted him so well. *makes a dance again*

bryzol - one word - *hot* - ure 2nd sculpt is ace but so was the 1st.

Medusa - can''t help it but smile - he reminds me of someone who drank loads of beer and the white fluffy stuff got caught in his beard., great starter !.

I am pist off!! my computer went to hell.... it just turns off every 5 min or so, and I was half way with powdered toast man!, now every time I turn it on I had to give it a smack, and then would turn off after 5 min. I had to take it to get it fixed and they will probably tell me what wrong with it until wednesday:lame::wall::ugh::grr:

I had another go to do something a bit more realistic so here is Mickey - I like this more than Betty and, gosh, I sure did have a swell time doing it

M3N7H0L5: thank you - Betty's anatomy needs some work, but I'm not sure I'd call it attractive :haha:

Intervain: thanks - your Yogi is looking good - it's one of the few characters I recognise here!

bgen: thanks - I thought I didn't like her either, but when looking for reference I found some vids with music by Cab Calloway - now I'm changing my mind  ( Betty vids (http://www.archive.org/details/bb_minnie_the_moocher) ). Good job on your samurai - his expression looks quite anguished.

So we are not able to use local subdivision?
This feature change the topology of the mesh for those who are using Zbrush.

Yup it does and I for one hate it ;) But it's okay to use local subdiv because basically you just subdivide a certain area of the model and there's nothing wrong about that.

let him upload his base then so we can choose that as an alternative, becuase It's a lot easier harder to make certain models/shapes with a more detailed base sometimes. Just look at alex olivers orc thing from a cube.

Spawn was a comic aswell as a Movie, but there is an animated series created by Todd Macfarlane for HBO. Not sure about the final call to whether you're base mesh will be allowed or not, but either way from such a simple mesh that's truelly outstanding sculpting :)

I don't mind if it is allowed in, but I agree with JHarford.

Maybe the organisers would consider using a simplified basemesh for the challenges, like the one ncollings used? The current one is an excellent base for standard humanesque headshapes, but try to push it further and it can become quite messy (I had real troubles with my Betty Boop).

I realise a simplified mesh may be more off-putting to some people just starting out in sculpting who want the leg-up, so perhaps a choice of say two base meshes would be OK?

ncollings
15-06-2008, 10:50 PM
Nice from you guys :) and I'm agreed with JHarford and Ordibble Plop, that it could be easier some time to sculpt from a simple basemesh, you just have more freedom actually.

If the moderators want to add my basecage ,i'm totally cool about it here is a link where you can find it HERE (basemesh) (http://nicolascollings.com/temp/Collings_BaseMesh.obj)

Great Violator Collings :)

And thanks for posting this basemesh, I hope we will be able to use it with next challenges.
Like everyone else I agreed that using the actual basemesh can be a real pain when you are not doing an human, it is not enough generic for this kind of challenge.

The simplier is the mesh, the best it is, like that you can really concentrate on your sculpting without fighting against topology.

And here is my entry, and a kind of timelapse (but I can't remember the exact time for each sculpt) and my final entry.

The Hood is done from an eye, the bones on his chest from the other one, and the rope around his neck is done from the upper teeth.
You can't see the back because it almost not done, I was out of time and I choose to focus on the front side of the model.

So here is my real Skeletor.
Hope you like it.

Heres my entry. Its Scarlett from GI JOE. This was a fun challenge. It was tough cus of the time pressure. I was rushed in time so I was almost done on the first try, when my save crashed and lost everything. But it was actually a good practice run and I actually did things faster and better the second time around from the very beginning.

ncollings: great job on Clown i love that character. i totally think your sculpt should be allowed, because the mesh is so simple. part of the challenge i think is how people tweak the base mesh into totally different forms. but because your clown model was human still without a lot of massive changes, i don't think you would have had any harder time using the provided mesh and you could have gotten the same quality level in the given amount of time.

Mantis: i love skeletor i was to scared to make him because i couldn't figure out a way to make his hood, thats a cool strategy to use the eye like that.

clee101: WOot im not the only one doing GI joe haha. great model dude

heres my favorite character from the show, i heard he's running for president

Well, I've never really used ZBrush. I imported a head to it once, but didn't get very far. I thought that I would try this sculpting challenge anyway. So, I asked my son what cartoon character I should make, and he said SpongeBob.

This is about 2.5 hours of work. I'm posting now because I don't know if I'll have time to work on it more. It doesn't look like much work, but it took me most of that time to figure out how to shrink the head and arms of the base mesh inward to make a square shape, lol.

AndrewQ

spider2544: great cobra! I love how the eyebrows are built into his mask.
skullbeast: Amazing mumra. you interpreted the teeth really well. broken and nasty
Mantis: the cowl for skelator is really nice, the folds are pretty neat.
ncollings: I really hope your base mesh is allowed, really impressive!
Eka: Yubaba! Perfect likeness!
Fireantz: I think this is the only one with a whole scene! Really nice!

Sooo many great entries, it seems like everyone is getting better and better!

Update on my Hoss Delgado, about 3hrs in. I'm going to slap on some simple clothes, fix up the hair a bit, and some other general cleanup. Any suggestions or criticisms?

I picked up ZBrush...And I love it. Can't say enough good things about modeling with it.

With that being said...how do you select/move separate objects in Zbrush. I exported Popeye's torso out of Mudbox and into Zbrush and worked on that for a while. When I then load in his pipe or his hat I can't move the pipe or the hat as separate objects from Popeye to position them where they should be. I've only had Zbrush for a hour or so...so I'm sure there's an easy way to do it, but with it's unbelievable number of features and options, I'm quite lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's Popeye's head after just a few minutes of happily working at a level of detail that had brought Mudbox to it's knees.

You want to use subtools, assuming they all came in together at the same time, go to the poly groups rolldown, hit auto group. then go to your subtools roll down, and hit grp split, that should split them up as seperate objects.

Captain Popo, Neolith: Thank you guys, happy that you like it :)

Spider: Really cool character, you did a great job with his hood(?)

Slickster: I am using a wacom intuos3 too.

Kazmarut: You are using a mouse to sculpt??? Amazing, that you can achieve such incredible sculpt, I'm so used of my tablet that I couldn't get this kind of result with this time frame.

I agreed with montecristo, if you cannot afford an Intuos go for a bamboo, I got a graphire2 and it was doing the job really fine, but the intuos is a gift so let's use it :D

P.S:There are really many great sculpt so far, but it seems that some are confusing with the current theme.
Some are just doing a 3D sculpting of a cartoon character, without making it realistic.
At least that's what I understood from the rules, I hope that's not me who is off-subject ;).

yeah.you're right, MonteCristo.what matter is pressure sensitive.btw, the difference from using intuos and others are hard to see with naked eye.but 1 important thing for me is the size of the tablet.bigger = less strain on your wrist.
bamboo's mouse is not as sharp as optical or laser mouse.I often got my mouse off the tablet area when i'm using it.doesn't matter anyway.I'm still happy that I own a tablet.

mantis, you did awesome work for 4 hours, skeletor i mean. i don't think i could do it in 4 hours time.

you can see i m working very symettrical on my sculpts, only a few and fast asymettrical details, it s the most time-friendly method i think. otherwise i don't believe I can finish a more complex model in 4 hours. my timeplan is; about 2 hours for rough detailed model and sometimes simple posing (3. level of subdivision) and 2 hours remaining for little detailing (6. or 7. level of subdivison).

besides, these challenges are great for fastening the sculpting skills, i m improving it every day.

sorry for my english,

are we allowed to do muppets? or are they not classed as cartoons? i'm sure someone asked earlier, but i've forgotten.
Edit: Yeah, i've got an intuos 3 a6 wide. tbh, maybe its just me, i can;t really notice the tilt setting of the pen. maybe i haven't configured it properly. I used to have a graphire 3, I was fine with that, until it broke, but yeah, i think the bamboo is the new graphire, as your entry level one i'd recomend it :) No point diving all the way in, i've known some people who don't get on with them, so it'd be a bit of a waste to drop £200 on an intuos to only use it twice

You can do muppets as nearly the entire cast of Muppets was in Muppet Babies.

So there's Kermit, Miss Piggy, Rolf, Scooter, Beaker, Dr Bunsen, Gonzo, Fozzi, Animal etc.

I realise a simplified mesh may be more off-putting to some people just starting out in sculpting who want the leg-up, so perhaps a choice of say two base meshes would be OK?

i agree with both of them.that would be a fair solution.so ncollings didn't waste his time ( he didn't waste it either !!! ) and can enter the challenge with his sculpt.

Hoss Delgado once again. I only have about 30mins left to tweak it, so I'm open to any suggestions! I'm really pleased with how quickly I got the base sculpt, but I kinda dawdled in egtting the expression the way I wanted it.
The eyepatch is an eye ball, the strap the upper teeth, and the teeth in his head are the lower teeth.

Hi all,

Some amazing work been shown already!

I have never done one of these sculpting challanges before, but thought I'd give it a go.

I decided to sculpt Nightcrawler, well a version of him at least. Think that x-men is a popular choice for sculpts, but I personally have not seen any of nightcrawler and thought that it would be cool to do him (though I'm sure that he has been done before). Not 100% sure what direction I'm going to take it yet, but have spent about 50 mins on it so far. Anyway this is an image and amimated gif of the progress So far. katonc; he s real ninja turtle, superb work!

dalton muniz; i like your sculpt, especially face,

ncollings; very clean sculpt, I like it.

biano; he s looking great, nice one.

guhhh :: wow that is a really really cool gargamel! cant wait to see final.
M3N7H0L5 :: buzzlightyear is done in a very cool way.
JHarford :: that is an impressive danger mouse, i hope ur not finished though since your missing the belt and cuffs. also why does he look more like a dog than a mouse? the side looks like a mouse for sure. http://utahhealthsciences.net/customer/image_gallery/373/5%20MOUSE.JPG
here is a white mouse for reference. the cartoon makes the nose fat, switch urs to a thinner nose i think. just a suggestion. it looks good the way it is too though.
freesupra :: thats a sad looking clown heheh good job getting it done right.
kazmamurat :: i used the antique shader cause it brings out the details properly. in the other shaders the hair and such fine details are not visible.

I've used up every last second of the 4 hours, and I think it came out pretty decent. Definately learned a lot, I will do the hair differently next time, and better reference for the expression is a must. one last pic of Hoss Delgado for comparrison:

Hey buddy !! it will be better if you update your zbrush version with the latest, coz very few or may be nobody is using 2 version now-a-days, so difficult for us to help, nobody knows ver2 interface.

As I use ver3, in this case -

1. Import obj file of eyes.
2. Save it as tool.
3. Load the "Body tool" (which you previously saved as tool)
4. In Subtool, append the eyes tool.

Hope this will help :)

I'm afraid that you can't import and work on more than one object at a time in Zbrush 2. You should definetely consider to update your version of zbrush. Zbrush 3 is so much better :) .

Yeah..almost everybody uses up to date version because tutorials now a days are for newer ver.
mine is ver3.1,and my method is different but gives same result.can use both.here:

1. Import obj file of body.
2. Make PolyMesh3D.
3. Import obj file of eyes.Click back to body base mesh.
4. In Subtool, append the eyes.
5. Now,save your base with eyes as .ztl and start sculpting.
