Welcome to the forth challenge of The Speed Sculpting competition. The only place to sculpt.

The Rules:

1. The competition will last one week, which will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting the entries -- at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition (this week's provided by forum user (insert members name supplying mesh here), from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic.
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here.
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt is a shoulders, torso and head sculpt only, do not attempt to extend this into a full-body sculpt.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging, let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt. What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpts you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc, but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "manage attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can have multiple entries, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here, and your FINAL entry in this thread (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=59331).

These rules apply to everybody taking part, there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide.

Prizes
The winner will receive a $200 3D print of their character sculpt, see full details of this amazing prize here (http://www.3dtotal.com/3dprinting/).
Our guide for preparing models for 3d printing can also be downloaded here (http://www.3dtotal.com/services/3dprinting/images/The%20Basics%20of%20Growing%203D%20Models.zip)

Time limit - 4 hours
Start Date: Tuesday June 10th
Deadline - Tuesday June 24th, 10:00 AM GMT +0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))
Subject - Real-Life Cartoon.

This time it's about cartoons, from The Simpsons, Dungeons & Dragons, Thundercats, Dangermouse, Count Duckula, M.A.S.K, to Disney, & The Looney Tunes. There's so many cartoons from our past & present you could make a real-life Daffy Duck, or a hyper-realistic Fred Flintstone, a bulky winged Venger from D&D, Akira or even a bespectacled Penfold! The choice is yours!

As before, we're giving you the option of having eyes, there's a separate .obj file provided or you can add eyes yourself as sub-tools (or software equivalent) but you have to pick one or the other of these options, not both. It needs to be a pre-existing cartoon, no making your own cartoons please, also no Superheroes Or Mechas.

Let's see those cartoons come to life...

ClassicGamer-3DT

Well I've been wanting to try to make a semi realistic Popeye, so this seems like the perfect opportunity.

Since Popeye was rarely drawn with any teeth I figure I can use those to make his pipe and use his missing eye to make his sailors hat.

Here I am at the 10 minute mark...just trying to get a general head shape down.

ClassicGamer-3DT

"also no Superheroes Or Mechas"
I dont know if anyone is familiar with the Japanese show, The Guyver, but I was thinking it would be wicked fun to sculpt him...would he be considered a superhero?

-Or- my second idea was maybe Meatwad, Frylock or Earl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force haha :D

Since I put the super soldier sculpt on the back burner and ran out of time, I have to do a slammin job on this one haha.

I see lots of good ideas floating around.

Spent about 3 hours at work doing this on the laptop. its suppost to be Eric Cartman from South Park. sculpting in the mudbox, hair and posing in the zbrush. I'll do another one soon, not sure what character though.:verts:

Sounds like a fun topic. I'm in for sure. I loved Dangermouse, but as it was already mentioned I may try a different tack.

MonteCristo: nice job (though I haven't a clue what the cartoon is).

I noticed that your and other's pics have some jaggies on. When using ZB you can use the AAhalf function to get some 'antialiasing' for a bit better look. With screengrabs this will lower the res of course, but it is also possible to export the ZB document as a PSD (in the doc palette). This doesn't render anything (it just exports whatever is on the canvas at the time) but it does mean you can control the picture res and use AAhalf without loss of size. The usual strategy is to make the doc size twice the final size wanted and then use AAhalf.

My apologies if you already know that - I thought it might help others on the presentation side.

Unlucky dude. I reckon you may want to read the following LINK (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=58970&page=38) then, as Aleks posted links to a useful app that may help with this.

For all of you who seem at a loss as to the guy I'm working on, You have clearly missed out on one of the best TV cartoons of it's time -- and therefore one of the best bad guys ever. Seriously Venger is such a brilliant bad guy.

How can you not love him?

Also his death scenes were fairly spectacular too (and yes there were a lot, but you can't kill this mofo, oh no. Here he is making a grand entrance as usual:

Im not trying to start anything here, but..............

The mario character is great, but isn't he orignally a game character.

CG said this though, to someone trying to do a street fighter character:
"Alas....................no, street fighter was animated into 2 films, but it's origins were in the video game industry so not really cartoon characters, there's plenty others to choose from though"

CG.

I just wanted to clarify.....

Dcflath
12-06-2008, 01:38 AM
After I posted , I went back and saw the discussion about video game characters. I thought that Mario from the Mario Brothers animated series would be ok.

CARTOON
–noun
1. a sketch or drawing, usually humorous, as in a newspaper or periodical, symbolizing, satirizing, or caricaturing some action, subject, or person of popular interest.
2. comic strip.
3. animated cartoon.

Personally, I feel that if a character, regardless of it's origins, was featured as an animated cartoon this would be following the rules.

I'm going allow mario and gambit, originally it was all about trying to keep superhero's and video game characters out of the challenge as was mecha's, gundam, guyver and the like.

But

I suppose that X-men and Mario although there origins were within the comic book and video game industry, i'll let these ones go as they have got animated series to their names aswell.

The only reason really was that I wanted to keep this more cartoon character based entries, I'm kinda hopeing that we'll see more characters like Hong Kong Phooey, M.A.S.K, Dangermouse & Disney characters.

However it's all learning and the sculpts are incredibly good.

Monty - You are dead right about Venger, he was and still is in my opinion the best cartoon nemesis ever, what did annoy me was that the series never actually got to be finished, there is a script though in which they defeat Venger and get the chance to finally go home, but there's a twist. I won't say anymore but I know how the series ended even though it never got animated. And what was even better is that the cartoon had two legendary vocal artists attatched to it, Eric the Cavalier was voiced by Don Most who played Ralf Malf in Happy Days with the Fonz & Venger, oh venger was voiced by the best voice in the business Optimus Prime himself Peter Cullen! now that's a cool voice :)

Keep the sculpts coming guys they are brilliant. :)

Oh yeah, anyone remember Visionairies?

CG.

BTW - I'm strangely attracted to Jessica Rabbit, is that wrong? :( lol

bryzol - Jessica Rabbit looks ace. i wanted to do her as well later on next week.
but for starters in Zbrush it's really ace.

eka - the turtle is coming along really nicly -

Dcflath - Mario turned out real good.

Crab People - skeletor is ace, but still i Like ure Krang much better - seems to have more shape and personality in it.

vongn - hehe cartman looks sweet. i am with freespace on this one- he looks way to happy to be cartman.

kazmamurat - man i am allways impressed with ure sculpts allways so clean and a symetrical - nice one mate.

funkdelic - hehe it kermit =!= from baby muppets ? or do the adult have a comics/cartoon as well ?

Osky - nice start on Lupin. Well i personally think i am not good enough of a artist yet to be in the 3d/ CG buisness -
even dough hobby wise i play around with maya/Zbrush/Modo etc... - so while i pratice i want to get a good education. Something to get back to if something else fails.

Best cartoon ever. Got the dvd, there's no rose tints on that bad boy (not the same for Bucky o'Hare, serious rose tints there). Shame it only got 13 episodes (admitadly, i couldn;t have told you that when I was a kid), you can tell they wrote the last episode for closure, which is a shame.

Yeah :) I remember the first video I bought had an action figure with it with a hologram imbedded into the chest which at the time I thought was so so cool. The very first VHS video I had though was for out top loading Panasonic video player and recorder which was so large you needed to knock a wall down to instal it, and the first video I bought with my pocket money for the grand some of £2 was Thundercats - The Terror Of Hammerhand, and it was just one single episode on one tape, I eventually just about ran that tape out after about 1000 plays in the weeks after buying it. Then I got Count Duckula, & Dangermouse both voiced by the legend that is David Jason, Dangermouse had the brilliant Terry Scot aswell from the Carry On Films & Terry & June fame. Then I think I got Rude Dog & The Dweebs, Marvel Action Hour which contained The Hulk, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, then I got the Pink Panther series with the Anteater mini series on it lol. Then there was 80 Days' Around The World With Willy Fogg which is still know the words to the theme song lol. What happy memories of cartoons. Thankfully alot of cartoons are on DVD know, I noticed that Bananaman, Batfink, Biker Mice From Mars, Samurai Pizza Cats & Ox Tales are available now, I wanna get those beauties one day. If you happen to be older than 20 you'll remember some of the best cartoons on the early eighties and 90's, if you are younger than 20 then i'm afraid you've sadly missed out on some incredibly great cartoons, yes there are reruns, but there are some classics that are no longer around to see now sadly.

Exactly right. You need to sacrifice the teeth submesh, or an eye for props. No adding of extras, just to keep everyone starting at the same level.

Josh: I'm loving your sculpt, keep it up! It has character.

Mantis: If you want a hood, you extract one eye, for example, and model it into the hood. The point is you should never add something to the basemeshes given, or modify them previously in 3dsmax/maya. It's about sculpting, and dealing with such problems as your predicament right now: I've got a head, teeth and eyes, but I need a hood as well. What do I do? I think you could decrease his nose length by around 20-30%, and make his fur look more like fur. Because it's not gruffy enough, it just sticks over the skin like it's some sort of scales, right now. You chose a difficult character to sculpt, man.

Hey thanks man much appreciated, Im havin a blast with doin this guy.

Quick question though, If I'm going to sculpt an asset such as a hood from an eye, does that mean I have to sacrifice one of the provided eyes to do this, or can I duplicate the eyes and sculpt from them as many times as needed.
Somewhat confused, I made his antlers from one of the eyes you guys provided, but still have a set of eyes in his head.
Am I breaking ze rules?
Hope my question makes some sense...

So many good pieces up it's pretty impressive including one like mine. I had already decided on doing Skeletor so stuck with him. Here's 2.5 hrs into it.
The rules didn't really say but I was wondering if we were allowed to subdivide
select areas of the mesh? I wanted to add more detail to the shoulders cuz they're just mushy.

Hmmm this is my first time doing this so I didn't even think about using the extra parts. I pulled my hood from the head. Wish I would've thought to use the eyes or teeth. Maybe I'll make a cape from it. :) Good to know.

Nice sculpt on Venger there Monty :) One episode of that show really sticks
out in my head after all this time.

Their weaponry was losing it's 'power' and they had to recharge them.
Unfortunately, the recharge device existed on the same plane of existence

On that plane, the damn things actually worked the way they were supposed

I'm thinking of doing Betty Boop, Winne the Pooh, or Mighty Mouse! :D

Erg, I knew I wasn't quick enough.

Betty Boop is top of my list - there's just something about that giant bum-shaped head that I think would make a good study :haha:

Crab People Think the Krang sculpt was an awesome choice!! hadnt even thought about that one, if I had would have probably done it. Great sculpt, also like the skeletor sculpt.
Vongn You nailed the cartman wanted sketch!! looks great! Had thought about doing that as well using the wanted sketch
Montecristo Have never seen dungeons and dragons, although from the clips you put up it looks alot like the character, nice work
Grommie Like the goofy sculpt although would take some of the wrinkles away, too much
Josh Strey Good and clean sculpt, but a bit too cartoony IMO
Kazmamurat Great indian sculpt, really like it, and its a perfect realistic version of the cartoon
Bgen Awesome cheetara sculpt, my favorite that I ahve see from you, also brave choice with capitan caveman, all that fur, lookin good though
Funkadelic Fantastic kermit sculpt, a bit freaky (in agood way though)
Bryzon Like the pose you gave her, but think a bit of detail is missing in the hair
Dcflath really liking that mario sculpt
Mcmayhem Also like your skeletor sculpt
Skullbeast DAMMIT!!! had also though of doing mumra for my second sculpt, haha well will have to think of soemthing else, cant wait 2 see ur version though
Mafida Cant wait to see the vegeta sculpt finished, nice workso far
Intervain Really like the hades sculpt raelly clean, think hes one of my favorite disney characters as well, like the overall style of the movie, might do one of the characters from there for my third sculpt, if I have time.

Here is my first entry for this challange, its Kame-sennin from dragon ball Z took a really long time with the glasses which is why the clothin isnt as good as I wanted it to be, the glasses were made from one of the teeth objs, and the shell from one of the eyes, took me the full 4 hours.

Going to do Powdered Toast man next!!

i have one general question.
i see some people are doing stylized toon sculpts more looking like the comic than the real world.
the sense of this competition is to create the look as if it was a real earth version of it am i right?

I've was wondering about this too. In the end I decided to sculpt something as if it were realistic rather then 'real'; for example, the orcs in The Lord of the Rings aren't real (as per this earth), but they are realistic.

There are so many different styles of toons, from real humans to stylised and anthropomorphised animals, it would be hard to do this without some flexibility I think (or without losing a lot of a toon's character - would micky mouse just be a mouse with big ears?) - but then I'm not official, so please don't take this as definitive.

Hi there all. I thought I would get in on the fun now aswell. I havent done much art for a long while now and just started again a few weeks ago. I also started to play with zbrush seriously then. I have looked at it abit befor becouse I have always thought it seams to be a cool program.

Well here is my WIP image on Riley from "The Boondocks". So far I worked for 2 hours on it.

DCflath - Mario is looking great

Kazmamurat - tight detail work on Groo, a bigger nose and a tapering the head might give it more of that Groo look

bryzol - nice curves

mafida - i like the clean sculpt

Intervain - good likeness of a very memorable character

Too many great sculpts to mention. Keep it up guys! This is a fun exercise. I think I might have gone too realistic with the TMNT sculpt. I have an hour to go so going to stylize it a bit and make it more recognizable.

I'm loving the response to this challenge, i'm so impressed and glad with all of the sculpts you should all be very proud of your works, they are just stunning each and every one of them.

I myself still can't get my head around sculpting software properly, i've got mudbox and I find it initally very very easy to use, my problem is the anatomy side of things :(

If i was to make something i'd like to try Dick Dastardly or Clunk from the Stop the Pigeon series, or maybe Pigeon Street, anyone remember that?

It's how you want to interpret the sculpt, a cartoon is 2D, so just making it into 3D will be acceptable in my opinion, but also it would be great to see someone make a realistic counterpart aswell :)

Thanks very much Kaz. That's very noble of you. :) This is a great shader. I like the fact that it hides nothing. In ZBrush, so much of sculpting is to do with balancing the defects with the details. This instantly shows up each for what they are. :)

Hehe, your Smurf looks a bit scared, or shocked, Medusa. :) I think it's a bit tricky to achieve crisp hair in Mudbox, because you don't get the millions of polygons to work with that you have in Zbrush. So it's still a matter of using Scratch and Pinch in a smart efficient way. ;)
