Decided I want to go with a more classic style cherub and ditch the person in the foreground. Still want to mix it with something evil looking like this:

http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/7463/23133018wf8.jpg
The contrast between the good and evil makes a really powerful image in my opinion.

But I'm short on ideas, especially when it comes to combining it with the pose I already have. Any ideas, suggestions, ect?

I must have gone through at least 5 or 6 different ideas. Think I finally found what I'll go with.

Another very amazing and interesting challenge !!

Good work everyone !! waiting for all final submissions . . .

Got some time this weekend, so started with what was in my mind -

This is about a creature from ancient time, he is a very dangerous and cruel creature who eats only fresh meat and not seen generally. He can fly very fast and has sharp big nails to catch his food in a second.

Here is the update so far

rawwad: looking good - he has a strange feel to him :)

eddymajhi: nice work - my favourite. It's simple but fits the theme well, with a feeling of oddness and the look of weathered sandstone. The snail shell on his back also says something uneasy about what the impending journey might bring.

ryvick: thanks for your comment - I have done a redesign (also to help mesh flow) and hope the pose is better.

With the challenge theme involving travelling and a quest, I've gone for a pilgrim with a twist  (the scallop shell is an old symbol for pilgrims).

I changed the design slightly from my first sketch to make both the legs and hips reversed relative to the torso - I've been trying to figure out how this guy might actually walk.

This was divided to around 8 million polys and has no subtools. I've been working on it for a good amount of the weekend and now I'm going to take a break and watch Doctor Who (new season here at last in NZ - yay!).

Alright I think I'm almost done. Just a little bit of cleanup needed. Still need to add that belly button.

DELTATHUND3R - I hear you on people not being that vocal. All this excellent work and hardly any constructive crits. Maybe people are just in a reserved competitive mindset, idk. Or could just be they're using that time to work on their own sculptures instead.

Anyways I think your sculpture could benefit from a few things. First a little more break in the symmetry. The hair in particular.

Second, some more anatomy research. The pecks in particular are exaggerated, which is certainly allowed, but looks a bit out of place with the sunken abs, and equally inflated deltoids. Emphasizing the pecks insertion point into the arm muscles would probably help that last part.

Third, the eyes could use some work. Right now they just kinda sit between the eyebrows and check. Besides that, keep up the good work.

DELTATHUND3R
07-07-2008, 06:58 AM
Crispy thanks:):).
I understand all would have been rather involved in own works and so forth plus Im new here :):)
Also all points taken I agree Chest is way too big, hair could have been alittle more detailed and yes the eyes could have been worked on abit more.I will try and fix as a personal project after the comp.I havent time to make any changes at the moment:(.Thank you for your comments Crsipy.

07-07-2008, 09:54 PM
Hello, i was trying to sculpt something whitout symmetry but it was to hard for me:wall:,so i back and work on this guy...

Working from a box is already challenging enough as it is. I've found that working without symmetry from the start makes all those potential issues far more common and difficult to deal with. That is, of course, on-top of the already frustrating and time consuming task of sculpting both halves and balancing the mass. It has made me far more impressed with already awesome models like mrpeculiar's dragon that don't show any sign of symmetry.

That said, more symmetrical models like yours and kazmamurat's for example, really show extra effort put into attention to detail. I imagine we've all put in a close to equal amount of work, just with a different emphasis.

Great work everyone. This has been a real challenge for me, as I had never thought to just sculpt from a box before. I have learned a lot during this past week, and am just sorting my final images to post. Good luck everyone.

Oh yeah, I only used subtools for the eyeballs on the cross, the two tree branches and the hanging men. I hope this is still acceptable.

Emeth003: thank you

Intervain: thanks - he's a pilgrim, so does that mean he is meant to be uncomfortable by definition? :)

Deltathund3r: thank you. Your werewolf is looking cool - incredibly clean for coming from a cube. I agree with Crispy that you could work on making the body parts fit together - consider how the various parts/muscles work and connect together.

Mafida: your sculpt is excellent, like a proper statue of a flayed man. You could improve your presentation though by using the AAhalf mode in ZB to remove the 'jaggies'. The AAhalf mode button is one of the square ones just to the right of the canvas. In the Document palette, resize the document to twice the size you want it, then use AAhalf and screen grab or export the doc from the Document palette.

Good/Bad news all. A bit of a mix-up on our end. We still have to finalise (read: write) :hurt::eek::smug: the next brief; hopefully this should be up in the next couple of days. However, because we don't like there to be nothing happening in this part of the forums, we're going to extend this competition by 2 days. Will still try to get the next brief up tomorrow though.
Therefore, the bonus deadline is:

Time limit - None
Start Date: Tuesday June 24th
Deadline - Thursday July 10th, 10:00 AM GMT +0

Might be handy if any of you have any finishing touches to add.

Wow, I haven't been to threedy for quite some time..........Then came across this challenge just a couple of days back.
Sculpting all this out of a cube!!!
Hats off to you great sculptors for coming up with such fine creations.

Came upon a theme just yesterday and started sculpting late last night.
Was going to post it just minutes before the deadline, when the deadline was extended.

anyways, now I'll do some more work on it and post it later.
This is my first attempt at making an entire sculpt from a cube.

2 day extension... and I stayed up late last night finishing mine... oh well.

Had some time, and figured since we have 2 more days of tweaks, I would put out some comments and critiques. It's a shame some of the earlier ones never got finished. Hopefully the two day extension with be a good motivator.

For what it's worth, here they are:

--------------------------------------------------------

DeviousFish - good start, I would just suggest to work on the overall form first, then start in on the detail.

goronking - nice start, wondering if you'll finish, and what will be in the background.

MonteCristo-3DT - Hope you can finish this out, the forms are flowing beautifully.

ibrahim_gabr - neat idea, hope you're able to finish.

Ketka - terrific sculpt! Musculature, face detail, and the flowing cloth are all awesome!

oliver1 - Hope you finish this piece, the initial sculpt has really cool form.

ryvick - base is really cool, the cloth hanging down would look really neat when finished.

kirgan - neat idea, not that "nightmarish" though, or coming across from the time period.

Chavinsky - idea has lots of emotion, even from the basic shapes you have. Putting the detail in would make it that much better.

omnicypher - Hope you're able to finish, sculpt is coming out cool.

Niv280 - Hard sculpt from a cube, how do you plan to fill in under his body?

JHarford - Coming out really cool, nice beast.

vongn - very neat, can't wait to see where it goes, hope you finish.

Christian M. - interesting idea, final sculpt would come out cool if you pulled it off.

Puckducker - Nailed the subject of the comp beautifully. Very cool idea that works great. well done.

grommie - looks awesome, shows lots of emotion. Impact area around the arrow hole looks a little "forced".

MSM - very interesting concept. Anatomy could be worked out a bit more, and there's the weird stretch where his foot attaches to his ankle.

bryzol - very cool, anatomy is awesome, love the scythe, and the skull at the bottom. Great work on this piece!

platypus_green - really really awesome idea. Amazing that you were able to pull this from a cube! One of the best compositions here. very cool!

kazmamurat - really awesome! attention to detail is amazing, anatomy and form are perfect. Nice job.

Sandpiper - Interesting idea, very cool. Muscles and background element look awesome.

bgen - cool idea, would be neat to see some asymmetry. Lots of neat areas of detail to look at.

Emeth003 - Very awesome detailed sculpt. Anatomy is spot on. Really like the hair to break up the symmetry

mrpeculiar - very bad ass sculpt. Amazing you were able to pull this out of a cube. Very awesome form and composition. Love the base, very simple, but works.

eXeM - cool sculpt, is there anything on the back? Hope to see it finished. Would be cool to see it with a different material.

rawwad - very.... cute? looks like a monsters inc monster that has to go to the bathroom. Like the shape and size though, very cool.

eddymajhi - interesting idea, kinda reminds me of Seaman for Dreamcast; it has a fish body and a human face.

skull_monster - Really awesome piece, great overall composition and very well done. Attention to detail is amazing. Wouldn't exactly give me nightmares though.

siamakcgm - Very cool detailed piece. Love the contrast of skin textures. The expression on the womans face is awesome. Anatomy and form is dead on. The gravestone seems a little out of place, wonder if it might be better without it.

Hex0254 - Interesting concept, hope you can finish it, like the form.

Ordibble Plop - Really creative use of anatomy. Very fun to look at and try and to figure out what's going on. The cloth on the base if really well done too. Detail in the face and hands is awesome. Very nice. Also, I still would have loved to see your first 4-way symmetry piece come to fruition.

Deepam - cool idea. The polys under the wings are a little stretched, but it's hard to get the shape without edgeloops. Is there detail on the back of the wings?

Kageko - It's a shame you can't handle more polys, really like the idea. Starts to get a little lost in the base, and would be cool to see more detail in the face.

DELTATHUND3R - Really like the fur texture and musculature. Don't really understand the "stick" poking out the back, I think it kinda takes away from the composition.

mafida - really cool. I thought about doing a muscles on the outside sculpt, but didn't have the patience. You pulled it off nice though, like the detail in the base.

M3N7H0L5 - Shows good emotion, wouldn't want to come face to face with that. I just wish there were more detail in the skulls.

Crispy4004 - Awesome style, love the scale different between the cherub and the rat.

MrHappy - Really cool. I like the way you took the cube, and turned each of the 4 sides into something different. If this was a real sculpture in a graveyard, what material would it be made of?

CrazyYarick - very ominous, like the the base. Remember, there is no time limit for this one, so you don't need to keep it under four hours.

Loafie - cool sculpt. Seems similar to Puckducker's. If you have the polys, it would be cool to see more detail in the babie's face.

------------------------------

Good luck to all!

I want to say something about using subtools, is there any restriction of using them in limited numbers or one can use any number of subtools how many he wants.

We have free rein with this one. You can use as many subtools as you like, as long as the original block remains the dominant piece of sculpture. This will allow you to extract certain elements and therefore get the level of detail you are after. :)

VersionThirst. That has to be the most complete set of comments I've ever seen. I'd really like to get mine into the comp if I can. It's quite a way in already since the first post I did. But for now, the next comp will take my attention. We'll see. :)

Try adding one or two levels of HD geometry, then hit the Sculpt HD button to render the whole thing out.

If you want to do any touchup at the HD level, I recomend first hiding the areas you wont be working on and then hitting the "A" key.

Glad to see that the extension is helping to get a few more entries in. Figured I'd listen to VersionThirst and try to get mine into shape. Really happy with how this is going, but MAN do I miss having symmetry. Still, I reckon it's helping to produce stuff with a bit more life in it across the board. Really impressed with all the entries so far.

Slight update on the next brief... We're working on it, although we may have a teeny tiny delay, as we are trying to up the stakes a little with the next one. Stay tuned for that. Could be a LOT of fun.

Fantastic work Monty, really love what you've got so far, I can only imagine that with a little more refining it'll be quite stunning by the end. Very much looking forward to week 6's sculpting challenge too.

Thanks a lot for the comments too VersionThirst, I really was trying to play to the specific cemetery theme.

Got my final entry here. Not entirely satisfied with the end result, this was a challenging test this week. I was away on vacation for most of it too, so I didn't quite get the time devoted to it that I would have liked....spelunking is just too much fun though.

And I also figured that I should upload the entirely required image of what the sculpt looks like after re-importing the original cube base.

I got a comment from another ZBrusher that the back legs are distracting to the overall piece, so I'm gonna take advantage of the extension and change it to more rock/rubble, or another set of arms.....

Just got back from vacation to find out about the extra two days! I'm so excited I can incorporate this change! :) I think it'll really help sell the concept better....

btw, everyone's sculpts are looking friggin awesome. I just browsed through all the pages and it's gonna be quite the tough voting process it seems...

MonteCristo-3DT - Thanks for the subtool clearification. And your sculpt is also an interesting one !! Thanks for the logo also.

Crispy4004 - Try adding one or two levels of HD geometry, then hit the Sculpt HD button to render the whole thing out.

This will be very useful for me, didn't tried it yet.

skulll_monster - very nice sculpt !! I think you used 4 subtools for it.

ryvick - looking good, hope you will add some creepy thing in it.

Sandpiper - I like it, the statue feeling is looking quite good.

I am specially looking for those entries who didn't used one single extra mesh or subtool, coz I also took this challenge as sculpting from a cube only.

Here is my entry(you can see more shots in final submission) once again, did one more subdivide -

I reworked the back legs into extra arms - still tweaking it out and working on details, but I'm feeling this looks better than the legs from before. The area where the arms meet is still needing some lovin.....

Plus, I've got some asymmetry working with a little more dynamic of a pose - as dynamic of a pose that I feel fits the flavor for a gargoyle-type structure like this. Just a little bit of a twist and torque here and there.....

hopefully I'll have some time to finish this out tonight! :)

- thx to Intervain for the material

SandPiper : those lil changes really brought out your model much more livelier.
Prithvi : that is a nice material and also creepy figurines.

I am finished now. Here is the shot and more in the finals thread.

thanks ryvick. I'm doing the details now....so many rocks and cracks....ugh.

Yours looks great! The cloth turned out real nice. I can imagine that was a bit of work eh? Some of the hardest texturing to get right.

Great that we have an extension because I only found out about this the day before it was due. Thats why I was only able to put in four hours. Was working all of yesterday so I couldn't put any time into this.
Dumped a couple more hours on it today. Although I'm still not sure about the wings. Oh well.

I'm giving the Final Entries thread a couple more hours for those of you who have inevitably gotten the GMT times mixed up. Thereafter, it's voting time. :)

Here are my finals... Loving the entries so far:

He he i readed Ordibble Plop comment on my work in voting thread and he was so close to true that i cant resist and must show early version of this sculpt...
mafida: he looks like a tortured soul and a statue to be found in a crypt (and perhaps a little like he is having trouble on the toilet )
Ketka-i really liked your sculpt filled that is something missing in final submisions...

ps.sorry for my english

great sculpting skullbeast and Poncell, shame these were too late to be included in the voting.

really cool poncell, is that adam eve and lucifer?

I don't think I've ever seen Adam with angel wings ;) I suppose it's more a life-sized version of this:

Hey, how come? That was a 5 star sculpt, though.

Its funny how things work out. Im selling the design to some resin kit guys as a print out for retail sales. I just found the finals thread, a week later. It didn't seem to stay on the surface so I never knew it was made, and when I searched for it I may not have been around yet. shucks.... oh well, next time!
