Ok due to the popularity of the "My car is faster than your car!!" Thread I was wondering how we go about getting a car modeling competition. Something like fastest car craziest design, funniest design something along these lines. But it has to have wheels.

I dont think there would have to be strict rules just something to get people using there imagination. There have been some great works posted in the above mentioned thread and i just think it would be good if people could formally comment and vote on the models as this would increase peoples interest and im sure we would see some great work.

This also gives the people that dont normally model cars a chance to have a go. Cause they can just come up with one of there brilliant designs and slap some wheels on it.

I personally dont think that there needs to be any prizes I would just be happy to see the models rated. But prizes are always a way to get a bit more participation.

Hope we can make something happen. If there is anything I can do to get the ball rolling I would be happy to help out. I got way too much time on my hands LOL.

I actually liek this idea. It's not just a bunch of people modeling cars already made. There would be some interesting designs here. But with a competition comes a lot of work.

But im all up for the competition, just need more time to play with MAX, stupid other things...takin up all my time (such as payin bills, working, doing dishes....)

This was one of the ideas offered for the last competition when the mods had no idea what to comp next.

The super-hero sidekick won of course, but I still think this would be a great comp...only we all know that Radar and Sniper would win. :p

The only problem I see is that many 3D modelers don't do cars. Many might view it as one-sided.

True Radar.
But isnt modeling a superhero one sided for the car modelers?
If the contest is to model something from your imagination. then all the other modelers can always join in...Maybe a character with wheels on his feet and rockets on his back? If the rules arent to strict this could be a comp for everyone...

I like the idea but I agree with Radarhead. The idea could be to do a "homemade vehicle" ( a car, a plane, a spaceship, a boat, whatever...). I think it would be great to see the materials used in the vehicles and the desing of them.

Well you just gave me one more reason... This Forum is flooded with cars, so obviously there are alot of people on here that model cars why not give us a chance to participate in a comp?
And I agree with Vitor. The rules can be made to suit more than just the car modelers.

EDIT. And according to the poll. The votes for a car comp are winning..lol

I would love to participate in such a contest. Why not make is a general transport theme or something like that? :)

Cars SUCK! that's all I can say.

But seriously pleeaaassseee... no more cars. The recent flood of cars by certain people, yeah you know who you are! , has pretty much scared me away from the forum. I find myself going to cgtalk more and more, now if only had the guts to post there. To bad I really liked it here. :(

I admit that some people find themselves trapped into modeling a particular subject. I model anything. That's just me. I find it ironic that those who don't expand their horizons are the first people to put down others' attempt at something that other people like.

P.S. If a certain subject scares certain people away from a forum, perhaps they should evaluate their self-esteem and expand themselves.

Lol trust me if anything I should loose some self esteem, or that's what people keep telling me :(. But I don't agree with them, what's wrong about being outspoken about your opinions?

anyway... I have modelled cars, not many, 4 in total I think. And I have modelled fantasy and interiors and other vehicules and pretty much anything I can think of. But seeing the same subject (cars) being done in 20 threads out of 25 on the main page gets very VERY tiring.

I wasn't aware I was putting anyone down. If I offended anyone I hope I didn't affect their self esteem.
I also don't know if that comment was directed at me. I couldn't quite get it from the reply.

I am not telling people what to post. But if someone has already modelled a car and posted it I think it redundent, and tiring for non car enthusiasts, for him to post another one.

All I'm asking for is a bit of consideration for others here on the board.

well, I think it's just because cars happen to be popular with the majority of modelers here. If modeling buildings or landscapes or whatever were as popular there would be more threads related to those (look, it's a tree...:D).

As it is the majority of members who post are...
1) Males
2) YOUNG Males (who enjoy fast cars).

I've seen plenty of other stuff modeled here though so I really don't understand what the fuss is all about.

There are models of women, warriors, old people, cartoons, bears, radios, and lot's of other stuff...

It may be disproportionate in favor of cars, but that goes back to the two points above.

I really don't see any problems...

Ok maybe im way out of line here. But if cars are so offensive to some people then maybe there should be a new forum section (WIP vehicles) then no one would get offended by the amount of cars that get posted. Personaly I dont find it offensive when I see another house, character weapon inatimate object or a scene of anything. I enjoy looking through all the other work as I have an appreciation for 3D art in general. But modeling cars is what I think im good at so thats what the majority of my work is.
I have modeled other things too. just nothing really worth posting.
However I did post pics of my first character.

Luke......

P.S. I am only new here I joined this month. So I dont really have the full picture of how everyone feels about this sort of thing. Someone tell me if I am out of line saying these things.

yea a car modeling contest would be great ..i have an idea maybe it should be broken into different parts..such as classics, american cars, imports, racing, etc

I'm in favour of a car competition. It would give me a reason to do some serious modelling, and it would also be a bit easier on the less experienced modellers (of which I am probably one).

I don't see what the fuss is all about either. If u don't like cars then ok. But some don't enjoy organic modeling. Beside 3D is so vast. U can model anything from a grain of sand to full star systems. So if u dont enjoy something then don't look at it. It may sound harsh but noone is really forcing anyone here. We just want to model things we like thats all.

I'm in this one if it ever hits. I'll be looking foward to the competition :D!

Maybe it should be something along the line:

Invent THE perfect car for the city where you live!

Everything must come from your imagination...

See ya!

Thats exactly what we are saying here. Not a car modeling comp But concept vehicles. Like what you just said. Great idea :D:D:D

I'm against a car comp because to me it seems too limiting, besides cars are so mundane.

Now maybe if it was like a spaceship or a cityscape competition I'd be behind it. Then you'd be able to get a nice diversity amongst the competitors, some would do ancient, others neo-futuristic.

Somehow cars just don't impress me, not to say I could do any better.

I for the car modelling comp.

The concept cars dont even have to be practical, anything you can think of. Only limitation is that it must have wheels.

I think this shoudl be our next comp,

And i dont think that you should already determine that radarhead will win, he does do beautiful renders but i will make my descision when i see the pics.

As for the anit-car people, cars are anything but mundane! They range from low HP economy cars to very high end very fasy cars. How could you call them mundane, there is so much technology in on single car. It can produce heat, motion, cold, electricity, shelter.... all from gasoline (and oil among other things).

The internals of most engines can move at aroun 6,000 RPM which is about 100 rotations per second. That is an encredible feat in its self!

I can rant all day but i wont......

I think you pretty much said it all. This is where we differ :). This leaves me absolutely cold. I consider e.g. The Republic by Plato or any work of literature or a single painting by Monet or Renoir or Picasso or anybody to be an infinitesimally greater achievement than even the most advanced combustion engine, so it 'moves' so what :), known to man.

The unending amounts of beauty and wisdom locked in the various works of art is simply incomprehensieble. And since 3d is a graphic artform, we who practice it, in my view, must strive to make images full of beauty and emotion.

I still vote for a city scape, that would be cool :). The brief not limited to any period. Perhaps only some limitations on Sci Fi otherwise we'll just get these ugly generic Star Wars cities.

im well up for the vehicle contest ..would it till be the same as the original thead as the fastest?

i dont know what people are going on about it all being repetative etc have u seen some of the posts on that thread theres tricycles with rockets on the back (genius, every kid should have one) the entries would all be completey different and whacky like a super charged lawn mower.

let the games begin
