1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Time limit - 60 minutes.
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 16th of july 2008
Subject - Vase.

Make something beautiful to put beautiful flowers into so that they stay beautiful.

Good Luck!

nice starter H20!

one question, do we have to model flowers, plants?

H2O-3DT
02-07-2008, 10:46 PM
Nope. Only the vase. Water, flowers are optional. But they are both beautiful :)

DaddyDoom

CG, I've done a model, and now I'm rendering it inside one of those V-Ray living room scenes you sent me some months ago. Is there a problem in using that scene, since the focus point is the vase?

ClassicGamer-3DT
03-07-2008, 03:45 PM
Shouldn't be, just keep the same camera that's set up in there and zoom into where you've placed the vase and it should render fine. If you're concerned about quality turn the quality down to very low in the vray effect tab "indirect illumination" a screenshot is here (http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/Screenshot-1.jpg), then you can switch is back to high quality if the render looks good, saves alot of time if the render looks bad trust me.

Kind Regards

DD I think your vray render is taking too much time. Maybe there are some parameters you can change to make a faster render.

EricBrooks
03-07-2008, 07:49 PM
I agree. There should be some options to speed it up somehow. We've been waiting for quite a few hours and the anticipation is killing me!

DaddyDoom
03-07-2008, 09:29 PM
Well, abandoned the model I was rendering. There were some really crap edges on the mesh that looked real bad when rendered. I made it from a primitive icosaedro, so it was all about tri faces and no quads, so they'd look really bad when smoothed... blah
I have a couple of ideas to other, and I'll try to work them out tomorrow.
Anyway, tnx for the support guys.

Very nice entry Milan, although you're going to have to reduce the amount of subdivisions you've got going on there, it looks are though you've used a lathe modifyer and I think you can set how many rotational segments you want you can in C4D with the lathe nurbs modifier, it looks like you've got about 40 odd sud div, try getting it down to about 12 or something otherwise you're entry will be disqualified due to a much to dense wireframes screengrab.

Sort that out and you'll be fine.

u should put some water material, and not red, that looks like blood...and the chrome material, i love it, looks nice, u rendering with HDRi?

Why should i collor the water anyway? :D

And yes, i use HDRI it just looks a bit better. And its not diffucult to use for the people who dont i do a fast explain it for the 3D Studio Max users:

-Press F10, Go to Render Tab, Go to the environment Tab.
-Check reflection overide, Press "None" to choose a map.
-Choose VrayHDRI
-Press "m" and drag the VrayHDRI map to your Material Editor.
-Press Browse to search for a HDRI map
(In (C://.../3dsMax/maps/HDRs you will find some standart maps
-And check choose type of environment (Standart maps use "spherical")
-And you're done.
(This will not work with scanline and mental-ray render)

Last time I hear he'd been hit pretty bad with a virus, he'd kinda let someone use his PC and then got attatcked pretty bad, had to rescue as much as possible from harddrives and format.

I hope he's ok, not heard from him since Tuesday last week.

Hi, I was inspired by a classmate of mine (hi deadfish!) who said he was taking part in this so I thought I'd join in. It's amazing how much I managed to forget in the few weeks I haven't been using maya. Based on the vase I had sitting in front of me when I was doing this.

Thanks for the welcome! The wires to the right where screencaped before I added the mesh smooth modifier. The bottom piece may not look it but it's because all the polygons that are a part of it, if you notice the sharp edge on the bottom piece and main vase, where as my render in more smooth like. Thanks for looking out. I appreciate it.

Also, I made the bottom piece using the cloth modifier and it makes the wrinkles look smooth on its own, there is no way i can control that unless I don't know of any way.

KayneG you must put the wire frame on your post or else you will be disqualified, what would be a shame, because your entry is very cool...
To make the wire simply use a screen shot, personally i use sliber for that...
You cant put a wire frame render on your post or else you will be DQ...
When you post the new entry be sure to delete the last one, or you will also be DQ...

hope i helped...

Joiko

It's been a quite a while since I had the time to enter a challenge.

This one didn't come from any particular reference. I just kind of made it as I went along. The vase, however, looked a bit lonely just sitting by itself. I spent a while putting together a scene for it, but the actual vase is the only entry.

Here's a design I really liked when looking around on google images for ideas. I didn't realize that Aleg8r had already done it until just now! I must have missed page 3 :hmm:

The flower I downloaded from Turbosquid then used fbx to get it into Houdini. The vase itself done in Houdini in the described time.

Trimyr
10-07-2008, 04:35 AM
Thanks for the compliments guys.

The lines going up are plain extrusions. I just selected one segment from every other vertical line around the edge, then pressed the 'loop' button under Edit Poly. The difficult part was deselecting all of the interior segments, since I had already added shell and twist modifiers (like I said, it really wasn't planned). I had to get the perspective view actually inside the vase to get rid of all of those interior edges, which is what turned a 5-6 minute model into 20. Once I was done with that, I chamfered segments and beveled the result.

As for the glass flower, that took long enough to render (some parts are about 4 layers of glass material). I really didn't want to put more glass inside the glass vase. It's only a two week competition.

Oh, and the scene was rendered with Brazil.

Yedan

think its prob becuase in general terms most vases are relatively simple items with little to no details basically a tube of glass or clay with some bulges and twists, when you start looking at the more complex shaped vases the details and shapes appear to be so much more complex that to model one in and hour is a very difficult thing to achieve and have it look right. so i guess most people will opt for the easier quicker route

DaddyDoom
10-07-2008, 10:56 AM
This is my last simple vase.
Gonna try a really weird and complex one next :D

DaddyDoom
10-07-2008, 11:03 AM
Indeed :) But it doesn't have to be complex to be cool I think. The vases I'd buy for my house would be rather simple and clean.

Great stuff blarg! I'd call that the scientific approach :D Nice clean model and render.

It might serve as inspiration, and to most will actually fit the purpose of shedding some light in one of Portugal's most secret cultural pearls: The Caldas Pottery Style. Caldas da Rainha is a small Portuguese town, which has become longtime famous due to it's very own and twisted approach to pottery. Check the following link but beware, some might find its content mature suited: http://loicadascaldas.no.sapo.pt/

Hey ya'll, new to the forums and to Lightwave, i've been watching these forums for a long time, but haven't gotten my skills up enough to be efficient. Getting better so now i feel like i can quick model what i have in mind in under 60 min.

This model took me: 47 min modeling, about another 30 min or so for surfacing and rendering (playing with settings).
