View Full Version : The New SMC's - 033 - It's Getting Hot In Here

1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!
Time limit - 60 minutes.
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 23rd Of July 2008
Subject - Thermometer
A wall mounted one, pool type, fridge, medical, Fahrenheit or Celsius, whatever the Thermometer the choice is yours. And Good Luck!

woo, nobody beat me to it
we are allowed to post WIPs, right? It is still waiting for some texturing and lighting (the light doesn't even go through the glass right now....), and maybe I'll do some fixing on the top of the container. ~45mins modelling in Blender. Unfortunately it crashes when I try to create text, I'll have to live without the numbers on the labels. :hmm:

gnome - you can post a wip as long as at the end of the SMC you've replaced it with the final composite entry and no duplicate artworks.
Marty as far as I know is still recovering from a bad virus on his PC, we was still trying to get it backed up and return his PC so some sort of normality. This is the main reason why myself and H2O are mods, to help out wit these things. That's why I posted this week's SMC :)

The thermometer floats in a bath tub telling you the temperature on the digital screen. They're used for when babies have baths, so the water isn't too hot or cold. :)

Haven't done a SMC in a while because I was intimidated by the crystal clear, photo-realisitic renders being put out. I'm trying to teach myself VRay to hopefully fit in. I know it's about the modeling, but the rendering is important too.
Modeling the bird took all my time, so had to rush the rest.

Here's my attempt too. I also did a wine thermometer!
Been a long time since I actually finished a picture I started on, but now I managed :). Some nice entries so far - I especially like your bear deadfish
Software: Blender for modelling, Indigo for render
Time: 45 min on model and ~10 min og fixing some scales crashing the export to indigo

Guess what I modelled, what software I used and what software is currently rendering it....
Well, the post on the first page shows I had the idea first , but yours is better executed I'd say.... :xx:
edit: where do the white spots in the colored liquid come from, by the way?

Hehe, I actually thought about doing the galileo when I saw the theme. Then I scrolled down and saw yours and thought: bugger... But I decided to do one anyway - hope you don't mind.
I unfortunately don't know why the spots are there. I had a lot of trouble rendering with the precedence levels so maybe that's the explanation. Or maybe it's just the refracations causing it.
Looking forward to see yours :)
gnome
19-07-2008, 10:20 AM
No worries. Precedence levels are a quite neat way to solve things like water in a glass, really cool. What I was having trouble with were the bulbs, somehow the exporter kept flipping the normals on them, totally weird. Adjusting the absorption colors also took me a while.... Most of them look kind of flat, though. :hmm:
Gotta grab the wireframes and throw them on it, then I'll be posting mine. :)

For Windows: the "print-screen-button" (left from ScrollLock, or somewhere near that button) Makes a screenshot of your whole screen and copy it to the clipboard). This can be pasted in paint or photoshop.
For Mac: Command(The apple button)+Shift+3 to make a shot of your whole screen and Command(The apple button)+Shift+4 to make a shot of a region that you need to select then. In both ways the image will stored on your desktop as image01.png

I use a program called SnagIt.
It's excellent, and is mapped to my PrntScrn button.
To get a screenshot of your wireframe, press the PrntScrn button, and open photoshop or windows paint or something, and press Paste.
GfxNoob
23-07-2008, 01:31 PM
@Honki:i have snag it too
but i though screengrabs is better than snag it

The software question could be relevant. If you want a really, really clean wireframe in Max
- apply a simple, single-colour texture to the model
- copy the model and add a push modifier set to 0.01
- apply a single-colour wire texture to the copy
- render using your favourite settings. Scanline without AA or texture filtering and a skylight set to case shadows creates a nice effect

why? a render of the wire is smoother than a screengrab ;)
Honki
23-07-2008, 03:34 PM
why? a render of the wire is smoother than a screengrab ;)But it's not allowed. Simple as that.
ClassicGamer-3DT
23-07-2008, 03:34 PM
Yep but a rendered wireframe isn't allowed so you'll get disqualified without one :)
The reasoning behind non rendered wireframes is that some people could cheat with a rendered wireframe and also there's certain geometry that could not otherwise be visible such as bend deformers etc that you don't get with a rendered wireframe
So screengrabs please people, or the fish slapping will start! I've got it on loan from Marty lol :)
BTW you've got till 10pm tonight and then we start a brand new SMC ok guys :)
Kind Regards
