After a short hiatus, welcome to the sixth challenge of THE Sculpting Challenge. Wether you're new to sculpting, to the forum, or you're a seasoned veteran, come join the Sculpting madness, because there's a lot of fun and learning to be had.
The Rules:
1. The competition will last one week, which will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting the entries -- at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. This week's basemesh was originally provided by Crimson King for the previous challenges, and was edited to include wings and a few more edgeloops at the arms and chest.
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here.
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt is a shoulders, torso, wings and head sculpt only, do not attempt to extend this into a full-body sculpt.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging, let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt. What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpts you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc, but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "manage attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can have multiple entries, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here, and your FINAL entry in this thread (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=650812).
These rules apply to everybody taking part, there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide.

Time limit - 4 hours
Start Date: 22nd July, 21:00 PM GMT +0
Deadline - 29th July, 21:00 PM GMT +0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))
Subject - Archangel.
Archangels, the supreme messengers of holy righteousness and divine judgement over all acts of evil and wickedness. They are mighty stalwart warriors at the front of the winged army.
So what this challenge requires from you, the competitors, is to sculpt a winged warrior. Head+torso+wings. Personality is a definite plus, as has been noticed in previous challenges, so give your character some unique traits, keep note of his/her backstory when sculpting, add an expression.
And yes, you can go the Archangel of light path, but you can also make a fallen Archangel, a dark brooding winged warrior, ready to take vengeance. Just don't make it a demon. We're looking for winged warriors from the Heavens, ready to smite all in their path.
As before, we're giving you the option of having eyes, there's a separate .obj file provided or you can add eyes yourself as sub-tools (or software equivalent) but you have to pick one or the other of these options, not both.
Archangels assemble! :halo:

Sweet, interesting topic of choice Freespace. Should create a good verity of entries, especially being a bust with 2 appendages that are larger than the bust themselves. Can't wait to get started.

Because wings are quite tricky to make, and they will make or break your sculpts, here's a reference I find extremely useful:

I had trouble with the last challange and been looking forward to this one for ages. I think im going to try to go for a modern looking angel.
Skullbeast thats a pretty cool sculpt but it looks very demonish to me and not very angelic freespace said "And yes, you can go the Archangel of light path, but you can also make a fallen Archangel, a dark brooding winged warrior, ready to take vengeance. Good point, Korda. However, Skullbeast's reference stands as proof that it is in fact Lucifer the fallen angel, so it's allright. It has demon traits, but it remains an angel, a dark one too. :) Looking forward to your sculpt, too.

Interestingly enough, all demons are actually fallen angels in a biblical sense, and satan is called both the highest fallen angel, and the prince of demons, so it's kind of a blurry line, haha. But before we get into some crazy religious discussion lets see some more sculpts!

kazmamurat: I'm digging the serious face she's got. Nice forms already.
slangford: I like your entry's expression and flow. Could look very peaceful and heavenly once you're done!
bgen: yes, being an archangel in heaven would make me smile too.....
Here's my entry after about 70 minutes. I'm going for the archangel who's leading a charge against the ol' mean demon dudes.....
I hope the stumpy arms come out ok in the end, otherwise it looks like he's saying "ow my freaking arms are gone!!!".....

I hope the stumpy arms come out ok in the end, otherwise it looks like he's saying "ow my freaking arms are gone!!!".....
that's more a matter of the expression on his face. Just make sure his face says "AAAGH! go back to hell, demons, or my rapier will pierce your black hearts!" and not "AAAGH! teh pain!"
(I see a rapier in that pose rather than your average sword ;))

Are things like creating alpha maps in an outside program, other than the sculpting program, included into the 4 hour time limit?
Also, would it be a legal move to create something like a feather alpha map, and use that when creating the wings?
I'm at 2 hours now, and want to plan out the next 2 hours, working on the wings.
Thanks.
yo kirgan ye i am back and kickin in 3d. will pretty soon update my model.
u should work 2 more hrs. on ure sculpt looks ace so far.

Ah, it's great to see you in the competition Superclops. Get to put those zBrush skills to get use finally.
A lot of good starts so far. Here's my initial work, 1 hour in. Going for a slightly androgynous look, since angels are supposed to be neither male nor female....think the sculpt is leaning towards the male side a bit too much right now.....
M_Cederstrom: I like the cowl on your guy. Probably going to help separate him from the other entires.
skullbeast: Nice interpretation. The face looks great, hopefully you'll be able to get a good balance with the rest of the sculpt.
superclops: Good to see you in the competition Superclops. The face and hair are a good start, and I like the giant wings. The giant wings look cool too, you going to pose them at the end?
NeoGeo: Looks like a pretty clean start. The neck area is already looking pretty solid though.
Dunric: Nice to see a little armor on your guy, good start.
Loafie: Great idea, I love the design on the back of the wings. I was actually thinking of blindfolding my angel too, but you've got a pretty good start so I think I'll leave the idea with you. Nice start!
kazmamurat: Already looks weighty and well developed (uh, the entire sculpt that is...), good job.
slangford: Elegant start Slangford. I like how you've already got the hair gestured in there, it looks like it's going to flow really well in your sculpt.
bgen: Indeed this guy does look pretty happy. Maybe try to curl that smile down just a tad (or flatten the middle on the mouth), I think he's maybe grinning a bit too much.
Sandpiper: Nice pose to start things off. I'm always so tempted to pose things right from the start, but I have difficulty sculpting that way...you've seem to got things under control pretty well though. Looks great.
Kirgan: Great work, I think it does look just about finished. You've gotta give it a pose though....just something so it's not entirely neutral looking.
EDIT: Added latest update....2 hours of work now. Going for a bit of a constantine look in the clothing.

24-07-2008, 03:02 AM
sorry Skullbeast I'm not a very religious person but what you said made sense I just didn't want you to go through your entire sculpt just to find out that it would be disqualified.
Anyway I was just playing around with trying to get some wings that looked alright and ended up doing the full thing I think I will try again to make a better one though. Id still like some criticism or advice if you wouldnt mind though so i can improve the next one.
oh yeah it took around 2 1/2 hrs
Freespace-3DT
24-07-2008, 04:35 AM
Korda, your character has a good expression, and he looks like some sort of superhero. What I would comment on is that the details are washed out, you could make them clearer, more crisp, better defined.

1st go at the subject. Put in 4 hours and didn't have time to add another subdivision to get rid of the jaggies in the wings, and wanted to pose it too. Oh well, I might try another one later.
Really cool stuff so far, it's interesting to see everyone's different wing styles.

VersionThirst: Good job, I'm loving how you made the wings look like organic armor.
NeoGeo: You got the anatomy right, and the dynamic pose helps, but I think it needs "character", "personality".
chai: Anime Archangel, never thought of it. Great job, it's a simple sculpt but has a lot of personality. I like how you treated the wings, especially.
bgen: He's still a happy dude (being in heaven, I guess ;P), and the amount of detail shows you really spent time and effort on the wings. Great to see you've kept coming back on each challenge.
Dunric: Hey, this is a cool representation of a medieval Archangel. The wings and armor turned out sweet.

Great stuff by everyone!!
Here's my attempt 1 hour in.
It was meant to be a cute little cherub like archangel but seems to have developed into a naughty little child of lucifer fallen archangel. I'm going to attempt some flowing locks but have never sculpted hair before. Probably sculpt it from the eyes as a subtool.
Wings will be mini cherub style wings.
Do all fallen archangels have their wings cut off? Hope not!

Man, this was quite the difficult one to hit under the 4 hour mark! You can tell I had to go minimum detail on the wings (you can see the blatant use of clay tubes! ha!). I spent way too much time on the body and had very little time for the hair, teeth, and wings. So some of it just got simple strokes. I guess at first I was still under the same pace of flow (unlimited time) as we had on challenge 5! Lesson learned....
So remember, this guy is leading charge against the evil ones. I tried to give him a look of saying, "chaaaaarge!!" I wish I could still work on his face a bit but hey I'm just glad I'm done. :)

Really cool sculpts so far
slangford - the wings wrapping around is a really nice touch.
kazmamurat - really fun idea and top notch execution as always. It's funny how the good side doesn't show nakedness, but the evil side is all about it
Sandpiper - Expression is really cool, definitely has character to it.
M3N7H0L5 - really awesome. Are you using the skull underneath for reference or is that part of the eye or teeth sculpted into a skull that will be in the final?
bgen - expression is cool, and so is the style and texture of the wings
Seems to be a constant theme - people spending too much time on the bodies and faces, and not enough time left to work on the wings.
I think I'm going to try another one, but this time, start with the wings first, make sure they're detailed out, then go into the body and face... wondering if that strategy would be worth it...
Sandpiper
24-07-2008, 08:17 PM
slangford: really looking nice so far. The wings stand out and have a great form as they wrap around. I like that you've given the wings the attention they deserve! :) I'd like to see another hours worth of work cause there ain't much else to say right now. It's looking like it could be totally sweet.
versionthirst: thanks for the kind words on my entry. :) If you have the energy to do wings twice, then go for it! I'd love to do another entry, but the thought of failing another attempt at making feathery wings makes me shiver....hehe

sandpiper: Excellent, simply superb expression. It's like the moment of the charge, the strike. You've got my vote so far, let's see what other sculpts we get. The wings however, I find to be a bit over-bulged.
NeoGeo: Yeah, you hid that error nicely with the angle. Maybe try another sculpt these days, could turn out better, and without the damaged backside of the wings. :haha:
kazmamurat: Sweet sculpt, I love the duality of your archangel. I also like how the evil version is topless, seductive.
slangford: The pose is great. Poetic, angelic. Crit would be the arm is a bit too fat, considering the rest of her body is thinner. Also try to create a better contrast between hair and skin ( especially in the neck area ).
Great sculpts, people! Keep 'em coming. Let's get these challenges back into the spotlight.

Awsome sculpts by all.really nice..
Very hard sculpt this was.I sketched mine before hand so it made the process a little easier...
Heres my arc angel, well just a tiny bit :):) at 3hours 34 mins...I havent added eyes yet and he needs a little clean up. my remaining 26 mins is so precious. .. fun challenge...

Great sculpts, people! Keep 'em coming. Let's get these challenges back into the spotlight. maybe a plug from 3dtotal not just the forum?
bgen- hahahah if you imagen heaven was filled with that guy smiling everywhere hahahaha
kazmamurat- I loved all what you did in the sculpting challenges, keep on going!
Sandpiper- I like his expression and muscle flow chest to arm. It reminds me of the fall of the angels by Rubens. When i first thought of an angel I saw those serene faces before me. Would be strange if they kept those during a fight:)
slangford- I can't crit anything yet before you define your hair more(and maybe a less glossy material?)
hope to join you soon, Thee

Hello Artists,
I did this angel of war, I hope you like it, took 3 hours.
ale3dfx: cool start, but I'll strongly advice against using the red wax material in zbrush, it's too easy to miss out on details with that material - try switching to the basic white materials, the grey mats, or check out the RS 2 pack (though not free), good luck :)
Sandpiper: awesome gesture, did you take it out of symmetry after you sculpted the basic form ?? or did you just broke symmetry in a layer and switch that off when you want to make symmetric changes ? very cool :P
grommie
24-07-2008, 11:02 PM
Hey alessandro....great start my buddy...like chai said, change your zmat...the red wax one is horrible...be careful at the anatomy stuff, but I can see that you`re on a great evolution comparing with the others sculpts that you had done.
keep it up dude...see ya

ale3dfx: Welcome to the challenge man! You've done some good work so far. I would strongly suggest you have a good lookin' over of a good anatomy book or check out some bodybuilder photos to get some good reference. It'll give you a better idea of which muscles flow where and into what other muscle, etc. Also, try using another brush other than inflate. I've really got accustomed to using the clay tubes and smoothing technique. Then I use the magnify/inflate/move to puff out necessary parts. Also, keep an eye on the falloff of your brush too. Very key. Anywho, keep up the energy! :)
chai: I actually formed out the pose first but not on a separate layer although that's my usual technique. If I needed to get something to sculpt symmetrically, I would just use the posable symmetry right under the activate symmetry options. It's kinda tricky and it would sometimes switch off if I used different brushes or changed levels of subdivisions. I'm sure I did something weird to make that happen, but anyway, it's a handy thing to use. It basically bases the sculpting action on your model's topology. So if your model is perfectly topologically symmetrical, then it'll work great. It doesn't do the inverse of the world space coordinates that the regular symmetry does.
And actually, I didn't use it a whole lot because I needed to address a lot of things asymmetrically. So that meant a lot of work!! ha!! Thanks for asking!
freespace: hey thanks man! I bet if I had another 2 hours I could knock those wings right out. :) I agree that they are kinda bulgy.....ha!

Cool work so far. I'm hoping I might get some time this weekend to have a go.
It's kinda tricky and it would sometimes switch off if I used different brushes or changed levels of subdivisions.
If I recall correctly, you have to reapply posable symmetry every time you switch subdivision levels. I guess it's not like a symmetry map and has to refind symmetry if the mesh 'changes'.

Ah, the time constraints on this one are tricky for sure. Was hoping to get some hair on my guy, but I didn't think I had enough time to get it done properly, so I just left him bald for now. Like everyone else, the wings proved a bit of a challenge, again, wish I had more time to explore different ways of creating them.
A model I may go back and revisit later down the road to revise some items. But for now, these are my final submissions. I've also included the roughed out hair I had started. Was going to make it with a sphere, and then project the head out into the sculpted hair/sphere.

Thanks for the comments from everyone. Some pretty solid work here, though I'd hope we'd get a few more people in this week's competition. I guess the hiatus might have left a few people wandering off....
VersionThirst: Really nice armored look you have. I think my only recommendation for the future is the wings looks pretty flat, they could use a bit more volume and form. Great sculpt for 4 hours though.
chai: Nice anime inspired sculpt!
bgen: I think your smiling angel concept ended up turning out quite well. Actually, the face looks pretty solid, I'm really digging the smile now.
Dunric: The final bronze look is really nice, definitely has the classic archangel look about him.
kazmamurat: Final turned out quite well, as you always seem to be able to achieve. I only wish you could have had more time to perhaps pose it out a bit.
Banaan: For being new to sculpting, that's not bad at all. Try maybe following the flow of anatomy a little closer, especially around the chest/shoulders. I like the face quite a bit though.
M3N7H0L5: Nice concept. I hope you have the time to bring the whole thing in line with what you have so far, it's looking pretty solid.
Sandpiper: The final turned out great, exactly what you were going for I think. Totally nailed the pose/expression.
NeoGeo: Nice pose. Yeah, I screwed up the back of my wings too after sculpting the front...just be careful when fixing the back, cause I messed up the front then when I went to do that.
slangford: No crits. Love the pose, very angelic. Can't wait for the final result.
DELTATHUND3R: Nice armor design, a you've done a good job incorporating it into the sculpt.
ale3dfx: Pretty serious looking angel. He looks a little bubbly though. Have you tried using the clay brush? I find it gives me a really nice look, without getting the soft bubbly effect that the standard brush tends to give.
chrisskinner: I like the mask, and the giant wings look great.
gumby666: Not a bad start at all. Just be careful not to make it too demon looking.

Many great sculpts so far!
Here is my take on the archangel. My idea was to make her look like a piece of a larger broken marble or stone statue. But I spent too much time on the face and hair and did only have time make a rough block in of the wings and make them look like damaged. They look way too wobbly and soft. Oh well, this was my first challenge and I at least had a lot of fun doing it.

Happened to me at times. That's why, when making LONG posts, I make backups of them in Notepad before posting them, or every 2-3 minutes. Call me paranoid, but you just saw how it sucks.
Helioz: Welcome to the challenge. You said you spent most of the time on her face and hair, and it shows. It turned out really cool. Too bad for the wings, though. Yeah, that's a reasonable thing to do. I know it from my university's email - it logs you out after 15 mins of inactivity, or 15 mins typing without reloading. It sucks baby monkeys, I wonder what the deuce they were thinking. :wall: :D

VersionThirst - I'm digging the medieval armor, nice one!
bgen - his blissful expression is fantastic, i wonder what he's dreaming about
kazmamurat - great idea with the half good half evil thing, very solid sculpt as usual
M3N7H0L5 - cool idea with the bone showing through, looks tight
slangford - i like the shape of the wings and the emotion her pose evokes, good job!
WildWire - incredible, so crisp, sharp, and polished. the head design in particular is wildly imaginative, love it!
Helioz - cool idea to use the lack of arms and lower body to make it look like it was broken off of a larger statue, nice one
Cool sculpts everyone, lots of inspiration to be drawn from this forum
Here's my interpretation. The helmet kinda kicked my butt, the head topology didn't want to play nice with pulling those prongs out. Had a hell of a time trying to keep them straight and sharp. Ended up taking away a lot of time I could have put elsewhere like the wings and face, but I was determined to make them work. In retrospect it might have been easier if I used the teeth meshes for em. Anyway, here it is:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Pedro but it is my understanding that extracting mesh is not aloud as it amounts the same as adding new mesh or using a different basemesh the point of this challenge is that everybody uses exactly the same starting point. Im sure no one will stop you from posting though as your work is looking pretty good. Who knows maybe theyll make an exception.
Skullbeast I think that might be my favourite so far
I started trying to to a female angel. I havent done a woman before so it has been interesting im at 1.45 so far and havent started the wings. I think i might use the gums for hair. I really should start using some references anybody no any good free sites? (that arent 3d.sk)

Just finished and submitted my ArchAngel sculpt. I wanted to make a low poly version of it, so I can bake normal maps on to it and maybe texture it.
I'm not able to continue my retopology.
I began retopologizing the mesh in zbrush, Zbrush crashed (no surprise). I loaded the retopo tool I luckily saved before the software crash (img below), the problem I'm having is that I'm not able to continue drawing my retopo, Is there ceratain steps I'm supposed to make when working on an unfinished retopology in zbrush?

Hey Pedro, sorry but extracting is not allowed in the competition. Instead you can use the provided eyeballs or the teeth for additional objects like accessories and helmets/armor.
If you don't want to redo the sculpt from before the extraction, sure you can still show us updates of your progress. Just don't submit it in the final entries thread, cause you'd just give me some work. :)

I use the document>export function since that exports the canvas at the full resolution rather than the screen resolution.
This way you can render off very large images;
by doubling the canvas size a few times,
then clearing it,
Zooming out to the canvas extents,
then redrawing the current tool on the canvas,
resize tool to fill the canvas and position/rotate to what view you want,
then use the document>export button to save the full resolution render off to a file.

Here's a "how to take a high res screenshot from ZBrush"
1. Decide how big you want your image to be.
2. Make the document size twice as big as you planned "final image".
3. Draw your model onto the canvas.
4. In the "Zoom" menu, click the AAHalf button.
5. Go to the "Docment" menu and click export.
It's pretty much what platypus_green said :)
... "fair and loyal MOD's".
You'd better not be sarcastic there ;)
Well, there is absolutely no difference between pressing "PrtSc" and exporting your document - it's still a screenshot. What we don't allow is using "Best" render in ZBrush.
Oh and skullbeast, you do realize that we will disqualify you if you post those images in the final submission thread, right? There shouldn't be any effects on the image, those are the rules. You are free to post this kind of stuff here,in the "WIP" thread, though.

no sarcasm. just curious. the smaller ones are renders but the larger ones have no alterations on them. Is there a preferred material? these are sathe's matcaps
Remove that fire effect (and smoke if you have it there) from your bigger images, and you are good to go.
As for matcaps,no restrictions here. But it would be nice if people used something simple.Yours looks ok,don't worry.

Hi all,
I ran out of time again but I managed to get most of what I wanted done. I think I will continue on it to try and make her look more feminine. Here it is
Freespace-3DT
27-07-2008, 09:37 AM
Korda, a start in making her more feminine would be a smaller nose and ear, shorter neck and less defined muscles. Good to see you've finished your sculpt. Don't be shy and show us, here in the WIP thread, if you take the sculpt beyond the four hours.

Here's my updated fallen angel.
Hope he's not looking too demon like to qualify for this challenge?
I am trying to keep some humanlike quality to him but also have him twisted by the dark side.
My third Zbrush sculpt and first attempt at hair which was fun (even if it is a Michael Boulton hair cut!). Made it from the eyeballs which I turned into a subtool. Couldn't work out how to delete one of them so just moved it inside the other.
This is 3 hours in after a lot of time wasted trying to work out how to get stuff to work properly. Not that happy with his wings. Teeth and eye balls to come.
One question, you can only use the eyeball obj. file as a sub object once can't you? I can't bring them in again to use as his actual eyeballs. Pretty sure you can't but thought I'd check.
All the sculpts posted have been amazing!! Great stuff!

Only once, sorry. :) Would be pretty redundant if you could use them 20 times.

ok i and messing around in zbrush and now i cant fig out how to get this darn thing back to normal. i was trying to hide some parts and lifted the wrong key and i did this mask thingy. all i can edit is whats in the gray spot. i can make a bigger gray spot but i would like to know how i can get it back to normal instead of creating more spots....?????

I spend some time to make better wings. It's not for the finals but maybe interesting.
The wings are from a new base mesh. I cut the old one from the sculpted mesh
on level one, closed the mesh in Maya, and project the details on the new one.
Now I had the body the wings and the eyes as different subtools.
Hope you like it

Yeah, me too - I just took it for granted it was the usual 2 weeks
I worked for 3 hours on a sculpt at the weekend but hated it so much I sent it back to the digital pearly gates. I thought I'd have another go this weekend, but I guess not :(
Well, good job to all those who finished and good luck with the voting.
I won't be able to vote but among the great work I particularly like the expression of bgen's angel (is that smug contentedness :) ) and the design of WildWires with the halo.

Just about finished my sculpt and was pretty happy with it.
Was playing around with the teeth subgroup and accidentally hit the Make Polymesh 3D button. All that was left was my teeth
Couldn't undo it either!! Won't be doing that again.
Hopefully I'll have time to go back and do it all again.

But you still got time, Ordibble Plop! There's only two days left, but you only need 4 hours! :D Why don't you give it another try? from what I understood of the rules, you can make as many '4 hours models' you like. (but only one final entry, of course)
I didn't like mine too, but it's been so long that I don't play around with anything artistic anymore, that it really made me feel good.. and it didn't take too much of my time. hehehe I'm going to participate more often with these 4 hours challenges.

Well that's a pretty interesting sculpt. I like that you've got a good grasp on anatomy, but I think the wings looks pretty freaky, more like something that you took out of a dog's mouth. :) You've got skill, because my first sculpts looked much worse that this, but try keeping this hint in mind on your next sculpt: Always sculpt in the larger details first, at lower subdivisions, then as you increase subdivisions, go for the smaller details. Always keep reference around.
Looking forward to your entry in the next challenge!

I have been looking at these sculpting challenges and must say the pictures are well cool..
anyway, had a few thoughts for future challenges last night so thought i should just put them up.. (granted i can't really take part yet as i'm still in the novice section of zbrush).. but as soon as i know what i'm doing with it i'll definatly be taking part..
Anyway with out too much rambling..
(1).. Monstors -- i.e. (frankenstin, warewolves, minatours, orcs, goblins etc0.
(2).. A & E -- ( mostly looking body deformations, pretruding bones from skin, scars, etc)
(3).. celebraties -- (i.e. a nice sexy pose of keira knightly or the chick from spiderman would be good.. lol)...
Anyway.. Keep up the good work..
