From a cool suggestion by buddy ClassicGamer, I've decided to start my first interior scene in a long long time.
This will be a close up shot of a workbench table, used for the noble and antique hobby of Matchstick Modeling (:)) Here are some reference pix I gathered from Google, and a couple provided by ClassicGamer himself.
I still haven't decided the amount of detail I will be putting into this. I guess I'll just go with the flow and see how far I can take it. Also to be determined, is what sort of matchstick model I'll be doing (car, boat, rocket, bla bla)...
As you can see, there's also a first WIP shot, result of about 1 hour doodling, of the room walls, the base workbench mesh and the wall panel for tools.
Hope you like it. C&C welcome :)

Cool idea DD.

Bottom right concept photo... now THAT'S a shed.
Bring moisture to any man's eye.

I gotta messy my shed up a bit. It's a bit too orderly at the moment. Damn missus. Makes me throw away all my stuff.

Ahah :D It was Classic's idea to start with.
Don't know If I'll get the time or the patience to work something like that out. But I'll try something in between.

looking forward to seeing that, too :D

I noticed that you have two lamps of the same model, but their cables have different lengths. My suggestion would be to make the cable of the left lamp go down behind the table. Actually in reality I would do the same with the cable for the other lamp, because cables are stubborn little *******s when it comes to having them go and stay where you want ;)

good work, keep it up!

Tnx for the input guys! I'm loving this project and I have to thank CG for motivating me to go for it. It's my first time doing such a thing, so let's see how it goes. Also, I have to mention the help of Grant (Sathe) over at MSN, who advised me about the best way to model the holed tool panel.

gnome, yeah, the power cord length was something I knew somebody would comment. But yesterday I was more worried on finishing the new props, but my intention is to grow it a bit to match the length of the other.

I'm thinking on making one of those old transistor radios, to place somewhere on the table. Also, I might include my Wizard model, as it was an action figure on one of the shelves. I'll probably leave it untextured, like those 3D Print models. A simple blue shader might do the trick :D

DaddyDoom
24-07-2008, 08:50 AM
Here's a new wire.
I've fixed the length of the cord, added the Wizard figure, and modeled the wrench kit. I haven't given too much details on these, because they wont be too big and there'll be more stuff to fill up the scene.
I think I'll start to build several tools to place on the panel...

One other thing. I've decided to keep the whole workspace as clean as possible. Such a workspace would belong to a very organized individual. My notion of a matchstick modeler is of someone who is concerned with detail, tidiness, organization. And with a messy table it would be hard to keep track of all the tiny tools and artifacts needed for the task.

As you guys might have noticed, one of my ref pix is a plastic bag with headless matches. I would like to attempt something alike, but getting those matches inside the bag, randomly dispersed, but still fitting neatly inside is a damn trick... Any suggestions?

gnome
24-07-2008, 10:31 AM
make a stretched cube, duplicate/instance it and rotate randomly, repeat until you have about a dozen, group them, repeat process with group. Model bag around the heap of matchsticks when you feel you have enough. done. :D

or you could use some physics, if you feel like it.

If I had the MoGraph module I would do it easily...
But yes, I might have to do it by hand eheh.

gnome
24-07-2008, 10:42 AM
I don't know what plugins could do it for you, I haven't touched max since a long time. :D
by the way, these things might be a rendertime killer, maybe put a textured plane underneath them so you don't have to fill the entire bag? ;)

DaddyDoom
24-07-2008, 11:04 AM
I'm not in Max, I'm on Cinema4D. MoGraph (http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/modules/mograph/mograph_e.html) is Maxon's particle dynamics module. Quite fancy, but I don't have it...
Let's see how I can work this out...

gnome
24-07-2008, 11:12 AM
oh, sorry. I was just about to suggest that if you have a sufficiently recent nvidia GPU, you could also use the free physX plugin for max, which would do the physics computations on the GPU a lot faster.... :ugh:

ClassicGamer-3DT
24-07-2008, 11:28 AM
How about this for starters, you'd have to work the mesh for the bag around them but with some collision cloth or brush tool with hypernurbs would sort that out.

I'll PM you the file on MSN matey :)

CG.

DaddyDoom
24-07-2008, 02:27 PM
Here's another set of wires. I was going to do a render but it would take so damn long that I opted with the grabs instead. Plus, I can show the various items in close up shots...
Some new stuff added. The arc saw, the tweezers box, the screwdrivers, and the matchstick bag, etc.
Gonna start doing the radio :D

Hope you guys like the development.

DaddyDoom
24-07-2008, 03:02 PM
That's a good question... I never did any polycount in C4D, dunno where the option is. Maybe CG knows...

ClassicGamer-3DT
24-07-2008, 03:16 PM
yep indeed I do, when you are in your current scene or not, go to Edit in the viewport window, scroll down to configue all, navigate all the way to the end tab named HUD and you have a whole host of option to add to the setup on screen, but to find out the total object in the scene please tick either total object or indeed total polygons and hey presto!

CG.

DaddyDoom
24-07-2008, 04:45 PM
And here's the am/fm vintage radio. I've actually had a pretty good live reference for this piece. Because my inlaw keeps one for when he sleeps over. It's based on a 1970's Sanyo radio, and I think it came out pretty well. Depending on how close this gets to the camera in the final render, I might add some details, like the text (On/Off, Power/Volume, etc).

Never did anything like this, and I'm quite happy thus far :)

I've decided not to include Ignis because it would be far too small to be recognizable. He is about 1/5 of the Wizard's height...

25-07-2008, 12:00 PM
Good morning ye all! Tnx a lot penguins :D

Here are two new objects. Matchstick modeling is, like Clockmaking, a precision craftwork and some point, the person using this workbench could be a clockmaker himself, with matchstick modeling as an hobby. So, I've googled for some precision tools used by clockmakers, and found out this strange device from de 19th century, used for making custom springs. I made a more modern version of it, and thought it would look cool on the scene. I've also done a rubber head hammer, usually used for delicate and precise tasks.

More on the way :) Hope you like these!

Work is steaming ahead, and that radio looks great! So many details.

I can't say I wasn't slightly surprised by the two hour render though when the lighting itself is still pretty noisy.
It looks good though

DaddyDoom
25-07-2008, 12:59 PM
xxxcubanxxx & Kage, tnx a lot!

The noisy/grainy look is from the GI Stochastic render. Usually it takes longer than the Standard GI, but without those weird artifacts that usually GI produces.

I'm now doing a small texturing experience for the walls, floor, etc. Then back to modeling again :D

ClassicGamer-3DT

So, did a first texturing/light/render test on the scene, and I must say I'm quite happy with the result so far. The objects that are invisible are the ones that aren't textured yet, as you may have perceived.

Hope you guys like the development. I'm not over with the modeling yet, some stuff will be added still.

Looking good, I know you haven't finish it yet, but I would like to see the table it self not being so shiny and you could apply some scratches even some dirty spots (like glue & dust?) also some bump on the back wall, although you won't be able to see the whole thing really. So far is looking impressive man keep it up, hope this helps somehow.

DaddyDoom
25-07-2008, 05:12 PM
Never used area shadows when lighting... what's the difference?

xxxcubanxxx, yeah, that's a possibility. This is all still very early to call it finished so, all can happen. I might reduce the reflection on the table a tiny bit, but my idea was that the man who does this, is a method/clean freak. All the gluing and cutting are performed in that hard leather piece in the center, which is already very worn out and scratched. The rest of the table was kept clean as possible. But I might change it a bit yes!

xxxcubanxxx
25-07-2008, 05:18 PM
Well I mean yeah, you do have a point there. I just got this workshop thing in my head LOL, but yeah if he is that kind of guy you are going in the right direction.

gnome
25-07-2008, 05:48 PM
It's looking great!

If the guy is careful to work only on that leather thing, he might be glad if it was a bit bigger :D Also, it would be less worn out at the borders.

I suggest adding some little clamps that hold the cable that runs down the wall in place. something like this:
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/4112/52228525se8.jpg

or if he's really tidy, maybe he has it neatly hidden in something like this:

DaddyDoom
26-07-2008, 09:21 AM
Tnx a million Mak! The final comp will probably be closer to the center of the scene, so that the little details of the model can be perceived better.

I'm now rendering the whole scene, with all the present elements already textured. Within another hour it might be done... After, more modeling will come :)

Looking really good :) All the materials look pretty spot on, except for as mentioned, the 3D sculpture, and the glass.
Its great to create a project and have it come together so fast I think.

DaddyDoom
27-07-2008, 08:24 AM
Tnx Kage! This project went on pretty fast, mostly because I had a much less busy week than usual. Lots of clients are on vacations, so things run slower, which allowed me to go faster on this.
I've already changed the wizard's texture to a different material, more close to a SSS texture. Also got the matchstick bag shaded, and a folded cleaning cloth. Still to get a new texture for the glass jars, model some more props and tools. Let's just hope I get it all done before leaving for vacations, one week from now...

Again, tnx for the support, specially CG :)

Back from a very busy outside walls weekend. After an intense week of modeling, texturing, lighting and endless rendering times, I'm back with a vengeance and planning some more tricks for my scene.
Anyway, here's another viewport grab.

Kage
28-07-2008, 04:33 PM
509 objects?!
Lighting setup looks good anyway.
2 sphere lights/omni's, and a spot?

DaddyDoom
28-07-2008, 04:35 PM
Now it's actually on 616 Objects, since I've added new stuff :D
Actually there's one more sphere light, coming from the left :D

DaddyDoom
28-07-2008, 08:18 PM
Here's the last viewport grab for today.
Added some new elements and killed one of the jars, since I don't want to spend too much time modeling stuff to put inside them. So... one jar jar left.

Some funny details about the new props:
Daniels Home Craft Tools > Daniel is my last name :P
the rulers manufacturer is called OingoBoingo
the headless matchstick manufacturer is called Mister Buckaroo... lol

I've just started the render for the scene as it is, so it will probably take most of the night doing... Let's hope it comes out good...

See ya tomorrow!

Everythings starting to come together well DaddyDoom :)
Love the subtle reflections you have going on, and the glass looks really good, on the jar, and the light bulb.
For some reason, the wooden type chipboard's texture you have on the work bench looks almost low res, and I can't put my finger on why, as it seems detailed also.

DaddyDoom
29-07-2008, 11:37 AM
Probably due to the bump, as that image is pretty hi-res. Gonna try to work it out a bit. Tnx for the comment dude :D

Robbert543

that bag of nails is bugging me.
(they are nails, right?)
..because of the weight of the nails, the bag would form prefectly around the heavy nails, and now, it looks a bit too poofy to me.

other than this, I simply love it.

DaddyDoom
29-07-2008, 11:44 AM
Nop, not nails. Those are headless matchsticks. And yes, the bag is giving me a hard time. I haven't found the ideal way of doing it so that it looks like the reference picture in the first post... CG helped me on it, and in the distance it works. But I'm afraid that with a bigger render it will end up killing the image...
Any suggestion?

TonyClifton
29-07-2008, 11:51 AM

Also, maybe add something to use for sawing, 'cause it's hard to saw on a plain desk. :)
Keep it up!

DaddyDoom
29-07-2008, 12:00 PM
Great to see you here Tony :D Tnx for the comment!
I have mentioned in a earlier post, that the owner of this workbench would be a neat-clean freak. Everything tidy and organized. He would work as a clockmaker, and the matchstick modeling thing would be a natural hobby for him, since it requires the same skill for details and patience. That's why I've been avoiding adding dirt or grit to the scene.

Still have to think over the matchstick bag thing...

Hi there gnome. Actually, that's a battery powered radio yes. The one I used for live reference is also a battery powered radio, with the option for wall plugging. But I skipped the cord because it would be one more to pollute the scene.
Yup, I might add one of those desk tongs, that attach to the side of the tables (dunno the name for it in english sorry :P).

The scene is far from over yet. I haven't even chose what matchstick model he will be doing :P Since I'm leaving for vacations next week, I might just finish it after coming back...

Tnx again for all the support :D

TonyClifton
29-07-2008, 12:07 PM
ok, forget about the spiderweb. the bag: may be you could think of making the bag material less smooth? like those plastics that have fold marks, once folded. like this the bag would reflect light in a more faceted way, and may be break up the effect you have got now...what do you think?

DaddyDoom
29-07-2008, 12:17 PM
Yeah! That's a great idea man! I'll just remove the smoother and play a bit more with the brush tool on it.
Tnx a million buddy!

yeaaaaaaah! That's a great input dude :D Gonna think about it since I still have some space on the right area of the table. I might even place it over the cloth!

About that suggestion gnome gave, the sawing steel table tongs, that was a really cool idea, but I don't have space for it the scene. It would something to be placed more on the left, but I cant zoom out more or the details will start to disappear... It was a really cool idea though...

Anyway, made this fake news clip with an photo I found on google, but the text is based on someone from the forums. See if you can figure out who :) Only the name and location are real, all the rest is invented eheh. I will place it on the side of the wood cabinet :)

Also decided to dirty up some textures, namely the table and the wooden cabinet. Still dunno If I keep that way, or somewhere in between this and the original version.

I even added some cracks on the coffee mug varnishing! Saw it?
I'm learning a lot with this!

nice progress man. i really like where its going. i just got a few ideas, some small details. maybe some dried-up glue on the work area? and some dirt on the glass jar.

gl man, i really like this piece

DaddyDoom

Gonna think that over yeah!

Ok, I've been untidying most of the textures. The table looks really messy now, lot's of ink splatters, added some grunge to some metal maps and to the glass jar, and also added some chopped matchsticks on the leather piece. I guess that the only thing missing now is the matchstick model, to be placed in the center of the scene.
I'm now doing the first BIG rendering. a 3200X2200 or so render, so it will probably be processing until tomorrow. Anyway, I'm leaving for vacations on Monday (the weekend will be off the mac as well) so, I'll get back to this as soon as I get back.
Hope this thread doesn't die :)

Well, just returned from a routine doctor appointment with my daughter, and after 4 hours, the GI pre-pass render hasn't finished yet. This means that the render itself will probably reach 20 hours...

It's a really really long render time, but I bet it'll be stunning.

it's gonna be another rendering night. It's taking this long because it's a big image, with over 3000X2000. That and the fact that there are almost 700 objects on the scene, lot's of smoothing, some hi-res textures, plus lighting (one of the lights is volumetric) and on top of it, GI and HDRI.
I can perfectly while the rendering is doing though. Been the whole afternoon working simultaneously with Freehand, Photoshop and Flash, while the rendering was doing.
It's the difference of being on a Mac you know? :D Kidding!

Tank[NL]
31-07-2008, 07:38 PM
nah, i think its the difference between multicore and a 3yr old singlecore :P

Bad news guys lol
The big big render was taking too long. I had to stop it around 11h30 last night, and decided to go for a viewport render instead. This one is taking too long too, and I've found the reason. The dirty glass in the jar is complicating the whole thing...
After 8h31mns this is what was rendered... gotta change that glass texture to the original settings if I want this to move on :(

Kage
01-08-2008, 08:36 AM
Ah, that sucks :(
You could always try turning off the volumetric light until you modify settings or something, as I'm sure thats eating a lot of the render time up.

DaddyDoom
01-08-2008, 08:40 AM
The problem was really the dirty glass texture. I got it to the original clean settings and the render is going at a normal rate now... But it's still the viewport render....
I guess I'll leave the big one for the final...

DaddyDoom

Well, been tough trying to figure what is causing the slow render in the middle of the scene. There's an area right in the center strip of it that is causing a boost on render times. It's not the light, because that has been rendered before, so it's probably a texture. I believe it's the wooden cabinet chipped paint texture that it's doing it...
I really want to go on vacations and leave an updated render here...

DaddyDoom
01-08-2008, 08:45 PM
ooooook... slap me hard with a 5 foot red herring and call me Jackie Onassis Kennedy.

I just found out why where the renders taking so long. Stupid me had that wooden cabinet old chipped paint texture with the reflection map turned on. That was causing an absurdly LONG render time.
Corrected now.
New render starting...

If you haven't already, make sure you're using a FG map in the Mental ray render globals so it doesn't have to recalculate the whole thing all over again every time you render. Should help to shave off even more time, at least after the initial render.

He's using GI within Cinema 4D's advanced render, but you can have it set up so the GI doesn't have to re-calculated which is about the same method with Final Gather in Mental Ray.

Killed the jar, gonna do something else for that space when I get back. Only that missing and the matchstick model.
Hope you like it!

DaddyDoom

When I took the jar off the rendering boosted. The jar alone was ok, but the mixing between the jar and the wood cabinet texture was killing it...

Tnx for the kind words matey!!!

BACK!
These vacations ended up being a bit hellish...
My wife almost broke her foot when coming home from the beach. Ended up returning earlier then we had scheduled, because she was confined to the apartment with her foot bandaged and unable to move without help...
All in all, I had some rest, lots of sleep, but due to some issues I ended up not resting as much as I wanted. First time doing vacations with my 2 year old daughter so...
Anyway, I will be back to this asap. Just checked my mail and there's a pile of work I need to go trough before even considering doing any 3D...

Client work has been constantly preventing me of returning to work on the scene. As it is so far, I need to pick it up for a whole day without interruptions, and now that's just impossible.
