View Full Version : THE Sculpting Challenge 007: 'Pirates - Past, Present & Future'

Welcome to THE Seventh Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!
http://www.3dtotal.com/images/PIRATES_MonteHack.JPG
The Rules:
1. The competition will last two weeks, which will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. This week's base mesh has been provided by MonteCristo to include the head, torso and arms, plus two eye objects and 3 prop blocks for your sculpting pleasure props and eyes are optional, though).
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here.
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt is a head and torso including arms only – do not attempt to extend this into a full-body sculpt.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpts you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "manage attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can have multiple entries, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here, and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread once it has been set up later on in the Challenge.
These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide!

Subject: Pirates – Past, Present & Future
Ahoy there me hearties! Ere's yer 7th sculptin’ challenge, ya mangy cockroaches! Ye’ll need to talk the talk and walk the walk of Cap’n Lynette’s challenge this time ‘round, with this ere new ‘un: Pirates – Past, Present & Future! I’ll make yers walk the plank if yer don’t take part ere and get yer sculptin’ brushes dirty!
OK so this month, if you hadn’t been able to decipher from my appalling pirate lingo, is all about Pirates – Past, Present & Future! Thanks to Tom-3dt for the theme for this one – let’s hope it’ll shiver yer timbers!
That’s right: we’re talkin’ pirates of the age old seas to the futuristic pirates of lands not yet known – whatever floats yer ship! No excuses this month: we’ve got 2 weeks to dust off our graphics tablets and sculpt like we’ve never sculpted before. Time is of the essence, as always, as we have just two darn weeks to speed-sculpt our way towards the final submissions thread! And remember, there’s a plank awaitin’ for those of yer who can’t be bothered to join in on this ‘un – you’ll be feedin’ the fish if yer don’t get sculptin’ and postin’ yer past, present and future reps of lads and lassies of the piratey seas in this ere thread, and there’s treasure at the end of it for me winner – what’ve yer gotta lose, eh?
So what does the Cap’n require of her hearties? Well, I want a sculpted pirate from each and every one of ya - just the head, torso, arms and hands though, so no full body sculpts please as yer aint got the time for that! I’ve blimmin’ given all of yer a base mesh to get started, and this time I’m also lettin’ yer sculpt the head, torso, arms and hands, too!
Give yer pirate some personality, character, and think about the back story of yer lad or lassy. This is a competition so get yer Jolly Roger up at full mast and yo-ho-ho with the best of ‘em! Give yer pirate some unique traits, and if yer goin’ for a futuristic pirate then set yer mind free and put a real great spin on it! If yer goin’ for pirates of the past then what about a poxed/diseased pirate – that’ll show yer sculpting handywork won’t it?! Yer mind is the only thing holding yer back with this ‘un, and I’m on the lookout for some top sculpts, so get yerself up on this ere poop deck – I’ve set the anchor on me ship an’ I’m waiting for yer WIPs!
As always, you’ve got the option of addin’ eyes (although you might only need the one as we’re talkin’ about stinkin’ pirates after all!); these 'ave been provided for yer, or you can add yer own grubby eyes yerself as sub-tools (or equivalent). You have to pick just the one of these options, though – not both, you greedy beggers! I've also given yers three prop blocks for this 'ere challenge, which you can use for weapons, hats or whatever - but check the rules and mesh information before yer gets carried away, as ye’ll be in Davy Jones’ locker if yer don’t play by me rules!
Godspeed and fair winds me sculptin' sea dogs!
The Mesh:
Your mesh is attached to this post - simply click on the attachment at the end of this post, save the file and you're on your way!
This base mesh has been created by MonteCristo which is said to deform lovely with a really even spread, so you should have fun hacking away at this one!
You'll notice that MonteCristo has left the base mesh featureless on purpose, so that you can all find your own styles!
He has also provided two eye objects and 3 prop blocks that you can use for the likes of weapons, hats etc. Please note: these extras are optional - you do not have to use them, only if you want to! Please also note that you mustn't add any more objects, other than what we have provided! Use only what has been provided and nothing more!! The extra objects supplied for your use must only accompany the main mesh and must not exceed the main mesh as the focus of the sculpt. This is the challenge after all!
Finally, ZBrush users should use Auto Groups, followed by GrpSplit to break the pieces apart before subdividing. Mudbox users should be fine as the MUDBOX_MonteCristo_BaseMesh_Torso1 .obj file includes all the objects individually! Any problems, gimme a shout!

(Can any Mudbox users advise as to how to do this is Mudbox?)
You can't do that in Mudbox.Since all the obejct are part of this mesh, you'll have to export every single one of them separately and then import back into Mudbox. You can do this in Mudbox by selecting those objects and pressing "Export selection" but it would be much easier to bring the mesh into MAX/MAYA/XSI and export the object from there.
All of this could've be avoided if the objects weren't attached to each other in MAX.What you could do is import the model back into MAX,detach the objects, select all of them, hit "Export selected" and reupload it here.It will save time for those who use Mudbox.

Can I change the base mesh ( cube ) , scale , move or change some verts ? or I have to sculp something from the box on zbrush without change nothing ?
MonteCristo
07-08-2008, 12:01 PM
Basically, any changes you make to the cube, need to happen in the sculpting programme. If you have it as a subtool etc, there's nothing to stop you rescaling it there. And we've seen from THE Sculpting Challenge #005 that you can make an awful lot from a subdivided box.

Just a question.I didnt get the time to actually do smth, but i loaded the basemesh in zbrush just to see how it looks and i noticed that since there are so many subtools the symmetry works kinda wrong. Is there a way to maintain the symmetry for each individual subtool? For example, the x symmetry works on the body, although it's really flawed, but when i select a cube there's no way i can have the symmetry work.

Yup. :) Just turn on local symmetry. You'll find it above move on the default right toolbar.

Alright...I'm about 3 hours in and here's what I've got.
I've still got one of the boxes left to work with. Used one box for his peg, one box for his cane and one eye for his hat.
I haven't done any work on his arms yet, so if I've got time after that and posing him, I might use the last box to make an eye patch.

ianchaos.. good start but you might want to spend alittle more time on the main portion rather than the props. Gather up some 'fat guy' references and take a stab at reworking the pecs and stomach. I think it would help alot.

slangford: you did a great job! I like how she ended up in your final model. You did some cool stuff with those prop boxes! I'd love to see you do a totally different style on the next pirate so you see which one feels right.
pedro: love it. Coooool lumps. His lovely pirate lumps.....I'm diggin his 'tude on his face too.
crispy4004: She's looking great. Maybe you could make it into a rolled up treasure map or something and then have the pose indicate that she's trying to keep it away from you...just a thought. Or you could just go for the weapon idea. That would fit her expression/pose better too. :)

Gonna have to disagree with that thought DJdude. Davy Jones has been sculpted way too many times.
If someone really wants to sculpt him, by all means go for it. Just be aware that people might be a little sick of seeing the subject. In my opinion, better to go with something a bit more origional.

Funny you should say that, I was thinking the same thing the other day. I didn't look at any refs for the face, just the clothing. She just so happens to look kinda like her. Completely unintentional.
Thinking about looking at some pictures of Scarlett when I make another pass on the face, but I'm not going to push for a good likeness. Takes too much time I don't have.

Hello, here is my Pirate. I use all the time and I only sculpt the front.
The hook is made from two cubes. I use the Unify command to bring the cubes
in the center of the ZBrush workspace, then you can work with symmetry and
the Deformation tools like radialFlatten. The hook itself is bend with transpose.
The coin is from the second eye and the eye patch is from the third cube.
Hope you like it.

Thanks Bgen. I like Le Chuck a lot too. You definitely captured his character while adding your own touch. Man I really miss those point and click adventures.
Anyways, I hope someone does a pirate tramp too. Slangford's woman, while definately more dominatrix than mine, is still classy. I could see a blatant hooker making for a pretty interesting sculpt, partially because it'd be crossing a line that many here wouldn't touch with a 10 foot stick. (that includes me :smug:)
WildWire - Outstanding work. I would have never thought to use the deformation tools to make that hook. Way to think outside the box.

I must go out now and I've got only 45 min left
and so many stuff to correct...:(
I think I'll do ears, hands, those ugly arms and the decapited head hair pose,
and finally I'll see if I can rush the gun out of it's lack of shape if there is any time left...
Damn! I shouldn't have taken so much time on the attitude,
I know I won't be able to work on the clothes or add further detail to the decapited head...
But I'm confident I'll be faster next time.
Thanks Bgen. I like Le Chuck a lot too. You definitely captured his character while adding your own touch. Man I really miss those point and click adventures.
cheers, i deffenitly miss those games as well, the only good adventure game close to that was Jack Keane - i have played it and it was nice. But nothing comes cloes to Day of Dentacle, Indy 3,4, Monkey Island, Loom series. The modern game have nice graphic but lack the fun factor and the orignality.

You're absolutely right Sandpiper! I have fallen in love with these competitions. To see some of the insane talent shown here is an inspiration, but to compete with them is what really gets me going!! Every time I feel a little satisfaction with something I do; guys like WildWire, Pedro, and Crabpeople are there to kick you in the butt and get you right back on the warpath. Pushing yourself and learning more and more each time. And I want to say thanks for that guys!

I know that feeling Slangford. With each competition I enter, I can feel myself getting better. The problem is so is everyone else :smug:. It's a good relationship though, the top sculptors inspire everyone to work harder and as a result push themselves further as well. In the end we are all improving and creating better sculpts.

Arrrgh!!! :grr:
I won't be able to reach a satisfying endsculpt within even 2 more hours and I've already used all my time...
But I'm not giving up on that dude...I might even turn him into a full fledged character later.
As for the challenge,I'll give it another try afterwork.

ah! great stuff already! :D
I have a stupid question concerning the rules. Since I only used mudbox twice in my life (the second was for the archangel) I don't have a clue on how to move the parts of my model to pose him! I'm not here asking how to work with mudbox, of course, but if I can do that inside 3ds max without breaking the rules! I don't want to change the topology, or even add anything there, just pose him the way i want. :)
I'm afraid this is a very easy thing to do inside mudbox.. I'm searching for some posing tutorials on the net.
Pedro Toledo
12-08-2008, 01:01 AM
I don't believe that posing is such an easy thing to do in Mudbox... Thought I'm not a Mudbox user, I believe you would need to use max, or other, to pose your mesh.
Good luck.

Diego.Floor - What Pedro Toledo said. The hard part is going to be doing it fast. Shouldn't be too bad if you pose a low subd level and worry about cleaning up the bad deformations back in Mudbox.
slangford - This new guy has a lot of personality to him. Keep going.
Christian M. I like the idea, but 2 heads is a tall order for a 5 hour sculpt. Not to mention you broke the symmetry pretty early. I broke it early myself because I really wanted the pose to dictate how I sculpted, but I still made heavy use of poseable symmetry where I could. For instance the hands on your model. Probably would have been a good idea to sculpt the flat one first with poseable symmetry, then turn it off and fix the hand holding the cleaver.
One last important note, make sure you go to tools, deformations, then unify. Monte's mesh wasn't unified from the start meaning it may give some symmetry issues. Had to start my first attempt over a half hour in because I noticed one side was gaining more mass than other.

Here's my pirate so far. I decided to go with the traditional pirate since I can't think of anything else. 3 hours of work so far. Still have to pose the other arm and give him a gun or something. Not sure yet what to do with the other hand.

Can I ask a question though... How are you all finding the basemesh this time? Good? Bad? Neither? Both?

Actually I love it compared to the old one. All the extra loops in the face ruined the last one for me. With this one, we have alittle more freedom and its alot more agreeable too. I would think we would need to work out the sym issues before the next one.:smug:

Didn't have a problem with the old mesh and haven't had a problem with the new one.
... well there is one thing. It needs to be unified under tools -> deformations. I mentioned earlier that without this step it'll have symmetry problems.
Want to give an extra thanks for the hands. Think they've helped add more personality to these sculpts.

Yeah man, the symmetry was really tricky... I would never imagine that the mesh was not centered, so I started sculpting right away and only latter I realized that it was not really symmetrical. It took me a while to reset the symmetry on it. Luckily I still didn't have much fine details on it.
But as I said on my first post here, this mesh is definitely easier to work for a speed sculpt like this, it's better to not have many edge loops constraining you.
Thanks!

That's a funny idea for a pirate, omegamista :)
Thanks Dunric!
Felipe, she has a really nice torso, but if you still have some time, I think you could pose her hand better, and give a bit more love to the face... I think her head lacks a bit more structure... But it's a very nice model nevertheless :) keep it up!
I am going to add legs to my pirate (not for the comp, of course), so I've added the legs mesh to this same base. I thought it could be a nice idea to share it here, if you don't mind Montecristo.
So, in case you do mind, please just delete this post and sorry!
http://rapidshare.com/files/137195140/MonteCristo_BaseMesh_with_legs.zip.html
This mesh has three poly groups assigned, so in ZBrush you just need to click on the GroupSplit button to have the body, both eyes, and the three props as three subtools.
Hope it can be of some use for some of you guys :)

So, I was wondering if you zbrush users knew how to make straight/hard surfaces(obliviously in zbrush). I am trying to model a pirate with hard surfaces and it seems my edges are jagged. I was wondering if anyone had an effective technique.
Crispy4004
14-08-2008, 06:32 AM
Haven't attempted something hard surface myself, but I image you'd want to use the pinch, flatten, and layer brushes to finalize the hard surface. Also after you start brushing holding shift will let you make a straight line. Lazy mouse should also come in handy.

Ok, so here I am at about 3 hr 45 min. Had some struggles with the hand holding the lootbag....all that finger transposing will make you dizzy.... :)
Still need to address his other arm, detail out his shirt and the lootbag.
Shirt - one of the cubes with some deleted faces and set to double-faced (hope that's ok)
Lootbag - eyeball
Water surface - eyeball
May not use the other two cubes, but we'll see. I'll probably spend too much time just getting what I have detailed out.

Looking good Sandpiper. Great expression. I think the hands are definately the most challenging part of this sculpt.
About the jacket, I'd really like to hear what the mods have to say. You're not to first person to use the props in a way that needs some answers. There is one sculpt in particular that looks like it has more than the allowed # of props, 2 of which are impossible to make from a base cube or sphere.
Anyways, I don't want to see anyone get disqualified, just want some better defined prop rules for the future.

Humpf, I don't know, actually I think he may have a point here... I too saw something that is kind of weird to be done from primitives... But I don't think it's worthy to make a big deal out of it. To me if one says it has been done only with the allowed meshes, we should just accept it and keep moving. After all we are here just to learn and have fun :) right?

Oddity: Very cool use of the subtool. Looks like he's coming out of a lower deck on his ship.
SeveredSon: Yet again, you've served up another killer sculpt. I like the futuristic pirate. Nice execution and cool design for sure. The hard part for anyone doing future pirates is getting that "pirate" look to crossover and not just look sci-fi. Very challenging.
DELTATHUND3R: This challenge has had a different feel than the past ones I've been in and the critique has been lower too. I wonder if it has to do with Siggraph going on right now and taking people's attention. I have a feeling we'll see some more sculpts coming out in the final days of the comp.
So since you were looking for crit and taking a poll on which pirate to go with, I think you should go with the captain pirate. I think it has the right emotion and pose although your other piece has a good start as well. It's rather difficult to get a realistic pose sometimes and takes me a decent chunk of time to do as well. I always start off with the pose and then use posable symmetry if I need to. Of course, working this way gives you less time to work over the whole sculpt in time, but if you get faster with posing, it'll definitely bring more life to your pieces. Keep up the good work! :)
Milan: Your anatomy work did improve your piece for sure. However, around his belly, it looks a bit too muscular to be a "beergut". From the angles you gave us, it's hard to tell if you were trying to give him a belly like that or if you were going for more of a muscular and fit look. With all the muscles and his facial expression there seems to be a lot of tension in your sculpt too. Maybe smooth out some of the muscle transitions and drop his shoulders a bit to give him more of a natural pose. Just a suggestion! Looks good otherwise!
axlproxie: Nice sculpt. Turned out great. The ruffles on the arms are definitely interesting. The hair could use some work but hair can be a pain in the butt as we all know. Great job all around. :)

Couldn't agree more. It's definitely doable the other way around like Pedro Toledo's amazing sculpt, but posing first helps me as well.

Slangford : his pants are hanging too low in my opinion. his ****** area is too low. bringing that up might make it fit his character which you already have very nicely nailed.
good job everyone.

Great sculpts everyone. It's hard to pick my favorite because there are at least three that I think are kick ass. Especially the pirate in the water with the bag'o'loot. Looks like he should have a bottle of rum in the other hand though. I think these challenges are fun, because it's a great way to improve your skills.
Sandpiper: Thx for the kind words. It was tough to make a sci-fi pirate look...piratey. I wanted to challenge myself to do something unexpected, hence the cyberpunk theme. If it doesn't win, oh well, at least it was fun. Can't wait for the next challenge!

Hi Guys,
Sorry for not getting the Final Submissions thread up for you all - it's my first time helping out with the Speed Sculpting Challenges on the forums and I hadn't realised we needed to get a Final Submissions thread up before the deadline, so I'll look into this today for you. Sorry for the delay to those who have been waiting!
Thanks to Slangford, DELTATHUND3R, SeveredSon and Neolith for suggestions for the next challenge - I've noted them all down, many thanks for the support!!
Just gonna flick back a few pages as well and check out what this issue with the props is about, as I hadn't picked up on that before...

Hey Guys,
About the props usage thing, I'm sure what Sandpiper has done is absolutely fine, but as I'm not a 3D Sculptor myself I'll have to double-check with one of the mods. I'm sure MonteCristo will be able to help me out here as he provided the base mesh, but I'm sorry if the rules weren't quite detailed enough in the props area - we'll keep this in mind for future challenges!

Hi. That's my final submission.
In that challenge I wanted to try a style more cartoon.
I spend a lot of time with the face and then I lacked time for the rest of the body.
I also would have liked to sculpt a cartoon parrot.

Hello. Just had a chat with the mods and basically the props were provided in this challenge to help you anchor/enhance your characters. The only stipulation was that the props must not be used to create anything that would deviate away from the character being the main focal point (for example using the props to create new characters or large statues or environments would cause a problem!), so in the case of Sandpiper's entry the use of one of a prop to create water is 'borderline' in terms of the brief, but we're happy to let it go as it doesn't take away from the character as the main focal point and simply enhances its character - which is why the props were provided in the first place.:)
Does that clear things up or was there anything else that needed clarifying? Let me know! Cheers
Sandpiper
18-08-2008, 01:16 PM
hehe...Just thought it would be a nifty "base".....I didn't realize I was teetering on crossing any lines, but I'd be happy to remove the water. :) I can't guarantee he's got any trousers on though..... :o
Lynette-3dt
18-08-2008, 01:31 PM
hahaha, no we don't have a problem with the water as it's effectively a "prop" so all is cool :)

Sorry, forgot to mention the use of the eyes as props: as long as you haven't used the two eyes provided as props, and then made two of your own for eyeballs, then it's fine. We'll take more care to clarify this in future challenges for you!

some awesome entries everyone, again, wildwire, awesome, definately my favourite.
Vincent, Looking ace, looking forward to the final.
Axel, what's going on with the sleeves? That looks a mess atm. Rest is going well though. I think her face could use a bit more muscle definition, then it'll start to pop a bit more. Keep going at it.
Abelion, awesome, nothing to crit there :) I'm sure had you had more time it would have been really awesome.
Keep up the good work everyone.
Ran out of time, but here's where she's at at 5 hours. was going to have a parrot on her shoudler, or a bottle in her hands, but started both but didn;t have the time left to do em properly. good work everyone.

So just to be 100% clear here, we are allowed to delete faces to make something like a sleveless jacket? If so, are we allowed to separate those faces and use them for something else? Can we extrude those flat poly's to give some depth?
Think I'd be both a good and a bad thing. On one hand, we'd have a lot more freedom to create props that go beyond what the cube is capable of. On the other hand, it's not exactly working with the limitations of the basemesh or devoting all of our time to the actual sculpting.
Really doesn't matter to me either way. In the end I'll do whatever is faster, but if I needed to make something like a sleeveless jacket, loop earings, chain links, basically anything with a hole in it, I'd definitely make use of it.

Gonna have to get me a mod's advice on this - let me chat to MonteCristo and get back to you. Sorry for not being able to answer immediately - thanks for your patience!

Thanks for the quick reply. Just want to reiterate one more time, I'm not trying to put Sandpiper's sculpt or anyone else's into question. Wouldn't be fair to them with the rules not covering all the bases from the start. Just want to know what I can and can't do in the future.
Lynette-3dt
18-08-2008, 05:55 PM
Yep, we understand; we should've been clearer with the rules from the start. My bad really as this was my first challenge helping out and I wasn't aware of all the potential problems with props. In fact, I was only presented with the props at the last second as I was going to use an in-house mesh, so it was a brand new concept to me and I tried to put in the brief rules what I was told about prop usage. I'll get back to you as soon as I can - sorry again guys for the trouble!

Morning Guys,
I checked in with MonteCristo about this, and he's said that, unfortunately, you can't delete faces etc. as this is not allowed. I'm afraid anyone who has done this will need to change these parts if they want to enter their characters as final submissions. I'm so sorry for any inconvenience guys, caused by the lack of instruction in the brief! Let me know if you have any further questions or problems, and sorry for the troubles.:(

You could just as easily make that jacket from the solid cube anyway, or sculpted it out from the body mesh.

Yeah, I don't know about "just as easily" but it definitely crossed my mind that I could have done it those two ways. I wanted to have that dangle effect in the shirt so that nixes the build-into-the-mesh method. And I really didn't feel like fighting the box more than I had to since it wasn't natural for a cube to turn into a shirt with two armholes.....Guess I took the easy road that I'm used to using outside of challenges. Lesson learned eh! :)
Of course, now I have no time to go back and do something else with the cube. Really, it's no big deal. Just tried to add another piece of pirate flair. ;)
I just want to be a fair entry like everyone else's. :D

Hey Guys,
Sorry for the delay with the 008 challenge! I've got the brief pretty much sorted but just waiting for some feedback on the base mesh situation as don't want to kick off the challenge till I know we're good to go, so thanks for your patience everyone! I'll try to get the challenge started over the weekend, but if not it'll be Monday now. Sorry for the delay but see you soon for the 008 Challenge! It's pretty different to what you're used to - that's all I'm saying for now, so stick around as it's on it's way!
