Humanoid Animation I features the most complex walk cycle ever recorded for an animation tutorial video. In this video veteran animator David Weinstein will show you how he breaks down and begins his walk cycles - moving onto cleanup - and finally the high resolution details. Using a layering technique, David will show the viewer how to understand the mechanics of each section of the body. Building and blending all the body quadrants together to achieve a full character walking performance. Then in the final stages bringing the character to life by adding high frequency animation additions including keyframed skin, muscle, fat and facial performance. This 7 Chapter series should not be missed!

Nice tutorial. :)

One thing I noticed though is that it doesn't seem like he has much up/down movement to his walk. His shoulders always stay at approximately the same height throughout his steps. While a normal walk with legs extended apart would dip a person (or monster) enough to be noticeable.

Or maybe it's that I expect such a big monster to be lumbering and throwing his legs/weight around and not so much walking perfectly straight lifting each foot up and out to step.

Konidias,

That's a good point.

But don't let your eyes fool you - have you watched much video reference of people walking or running? Or even animals walking or running? Humans and Animals do not dip up and down much. Yes you read that correctly -- even during a run or sprint - humans and animals do not dip or rise up and down much at all. It's a very subtle action.

I do agree that Troll could probably use a little more up and down to him (Y axis). That is one of the draw backs when your recorded a tutorial like this... it's hard to stop and get a critique in the middle and make changes. :dunno: These are things I talk about during my recording process of this Troll. About stopping at certain points and getting feedback -- because even the best animators eyes adjust to certain movements. And an outside fresh eye opinion is *always* needed.

Again, this walk cycle was done for fun and to show my process and approach. I personally would not have the Trolls hands waving around like that with is fingers flowing. I added in actions like that to allow viewers to get the most out of the 3 1/2 hours. These are topics that I talk about during the video also - about animating "for the character".

For some of my new tutorials I will be trying alternative ideas and methods which will actually incorporate feedback from other professionals. Thanks for your input - I've got that in my mental library for the next one :)

Cheers, -D
