Final Images:
Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):
- 1 x Winning pose shot. This image can only have "One" pose of your character. No multiple shots or different angles. Just one! (Recommend image size – 1000pixels by 1000pixels)
- 1 x Beauty shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you. (Recommend image size – 1000pixels by 1000pixels)
- 1 x wireframe shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple wireframe shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you. Must have polycount included. (Recommend image size – 1000pixels by 1000pixels)
- 1 x texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet. (Recommend image size – 1000pixels by 1000pixels)
- Concept Sheet (Only if you have a concept) (Recommend image size – 1000pixels by 1000pixels)
You must provide a screen grab of your wire frame with your poly count, with the actual model and all its parts selected. Please don’t Photoshop your Poly counter with a bogus count. Make sure you post all work in progress, including final poly counts and wire frames in the work in progress thread.
Everyone who enters must vote, or your entry will be disqualified

Hello. As you'll see, I lost my texture sheet along the way. I thought that I would share what I had with everyone anyway. The project was alot of fun and the practice is much needed - as always it was nice to see what everyone can do!

This competition has finally come to an end, and it has been tons of fun and an enormous learning experience. I want to thank every one who helped me, guided me and inspired me, and may the best animal warrior win!

didn't have time to set up a rig and pose, specular maps, normals for the character, proper color maps for the weapons and thousands of other things.... :s
well, instead of winning and beauty shots, here's a GLSL (openGL) shot (for some reason, alpha doesn't work), and some renders.
124037
wireframe (the more recent blender build from the apricot branch has a triangle counter, yay! :D):
124038
texture sheet:
124039
so-called concept sheet (I could throw in a couple weasel/ferret references, but I'm too tired to do that, JFGI):
124040
It's been a great experience, I think I'm gonna finish this properly when I find some time, and then release it under a CC license.... :)
Good luck everyone!

nice flow, cool concept, amazing textures, i think the leaf on the weapon could have been more curved slightly, and maybe the thighs could have been a little thicker.

good proportions, great textures, the teeth were too straight, and the gums were too dark making them stand out, and his weapon could use some more polygons around the blade.

great sculpt, cool armor details, blood on the shield looks great, but its a bit overdone on the body, and his weapon was way too low poly for the character, plus the hanging skulls would make walking very annoying.

I love the color choice and I love the textures I just would've liked to have seen the bumps a little larger in scale, and maybe a slight fold or two on the loin cloth. Otherwise outstanding.

from the very beggining your entry was one of my fav, from basemesh all the way to final exacution. The texture work is pretty badass, love the color scheme. I think you lighting setup is just amazing the color for your backlight really blends nicely with the texture. My only crit is that you should have reconsider the scale on the weapons, other than that great work.

I love the model, It really shows that you spend a lot of time perfecting it and the final details, but I also believe that it was your downfall. By spending too much time on the model you forget about leaving time for texturing. right now your texturing looks a little blury where all the details you put on the normal map dont stick out very well as a result. overall the character is looking dope good job.;P

Your turned in a very polished and solid piece of work I think. Your concept was good, a nice re-imagining of a classic, and your presentation was pretty clean. The silhouette interesting and unique and I don't see any major problem's with the poly flow anywhere. Your UV's were nicely packed, and your texture's pretty solid. All around really solid and well put together entry.
I really like the textures on the armor, they're gorgeous, a really nice mix of saturated red/blue/yellow, but I think the skin's still letting you down some yet tho. The colors there, but you could definitely work in some fine details, its a 2048² texture, that's a lot of room, and turtles have loads interesting skin texture/wrinkles/colorations. Well done, this is really a solid piece.

Great character, awesome size and strength to him. The overall shape is pretty good and I can't see an issue with poly flow anywhere. Uv space is pretty well utilized, and the textures are really nice, that shield is gorgeous. Your winning and beauty shots are both a bit dark tho, at least on my monitor.
I think having weapons was the right call, I think they did round out your character a little more than not having them. I do think that that axe is just a little big for a one handed weapon, maybe scale it back to 80-85% and you'd be good to go, and maybe a couple more polys in the axe blade to round it out a bit. All around really nice character, well done.

I really like the character you came up with. He's unique and interesting. Your presentation is pretty good all around, I think your winning pose could show his face just a little more, its a bit too obscured by the shoulder armor in my opinion. I really like your other sheets tho, the breakdown from the concept to the completed piece is really nice, and pretty faithful to your concept and the beauty shot is nice with all the poses/expressions.
I really would have liked to have seen you use more polygons tho because I keep getting distracted from the overall piece by the faceting in places. A little more variation in the colors would have helped distinguish different elements of your character from one another. Nice work on him, there's something really appealing about your character and I could see him at home in a lot of games.

no doubt! cleanest model of the bunch.. Silhoette is very readable. Skin textures look great, though the leopard skin looks flat. Presentation looks very simple, yet it works well w/ the model. Truely well excecuted, 1st place worthy. Beauty Simplicity and Brilliance are the keywords!.. GREAT JOB CHAMP!

Easily the sickest entry in the competition, the word is ferocity. The concept and model are the highligts. The use of UV space is simply pro. Presentation is brilliant, from the poses, element, and detail. It's the textures that lacked for me it felt very unfinished, aside from the beautifuly painted shark skin itself the weapon and armor colors were kind of off. Either way top entry for sure!

This entry showcased the artist's high skill level, from the gorgeous details and intricate armory. It was the delivery that took away points for me. Textures showed a lot of potential, but maybe it needed more work. The lighting for the final images were too dark and made the character hard to read. I see the great talent, I just thought execution needed much work. Either way, congratulations! you're in my top 3.
honorable mentions:
Vicban3d: I really like your entry, very original and weird, haha.. nice work!
Naime: Beautiful paint work, I love the style.
Calcuttason: Man! can't believe I'm saying this, but your character is handsome, such a pretty face specially in the profile shot. I know you didn't have enough time to finish the textures, which kinda sucks. They look flat at the moment but I see great potential if you work on it more.

While the originality/creativeness wasn't exactly the strong point, the execution MORE than made up for that. This is a SICK model that shows not only your amazing modeling skills but an absolutely flawless presentation. While I wish you would have shown more diverse poses, the sheer presence of this guy is overwhelming. Smashing good work, definitely a model to be proud of!
(Calcuttason had an awesome entry as well, pushing a bit more contrast in the textures would have helped it I think, its a bit too soft for my taste. Very clean model though! I especially like the detail in the face in the close-up shot!)

The most solid work on this competition I think. You manage to build it up on very few time, almost on a production pipeline, no time for useless stuff, you did just what it need to be a good game character. Unfortunately I think the highpoly model could really have a lot more of work, but guess time wasn't much. Congratulations ;)

Your model and textures have really great details, The axe just doesn't seem to fit into one hand. The pose you put the rhino in seems very unnatural(it could be the angle though).

If I am I'll add points later
it was pretty tight between the first two - pogimonz had more detail and different types of textures in the model so he gets the win
warlock - you've got a great mesh and textures as always but the absence of normal maps has hurt this one (mostly cos it's naked) . This is one occasion where you can actually blame your tools and get away with it ;)

Best entry all around, I still cant believe how fast you made him, took me the whole 5 weeks to make my guy lol. Only thing as far as improvement would be some more detail in the diffuse map, like the blue glyphs on his shoulders are a little confusing and don't stand out as much as I want them to against the gold armor. The shark head is freaking amazing and scary. Mad skillz!

Good job everyone, I guess I can learn a lot from you guys :D, and thanks to the ones commenting on my WIPs. Dunno yet if I'm gonna join in on the fun for the next challenge, but good luck already to the ones who do :)

So it has been awhile since I have done anything related to the low poly challenges here at 3dtotal and the first thing I noticed right off the bat was that within the voting the concept category had been replaced with presentation. I guess that's OK considering the extreme lack of creativity among most of these entries.
At any rate I basically picked my 3 favorite from the bunch (the ones I think all around did a good job) and then graded them accordingly.
First Place
De-evolving Man (Shark)
presentation ( 8 - 10)
Model ( 8 - 10)
Texture ( 8 - 10)
total: 24
Over all one of the most creative entries of the bunch. The shark pirate thing you got going on is pretty neat but i would have liked to see more use of things you would have found at the bottom of the ocean like giant shells used for the shoulder armor or something. Also in the presentation I never find it to be a good idea to have a completely black background behind your character usually a dark gray works nice and you don't lose any of the detail, some of the renders in your "booty" shot get a little lost and undefined. The Model looks pretty well constructed and it seems to deform well for animation. I would have liked to see a T-pose of the character though. The UV layout of your textures is great and the textures are pretty good too. I'm not a huge fan of the glowing runes and i think the metal and leather seem a little rushed. Also the blood or oil or whatever it is on his mouth doesn't read very well either.
second place
Naime
presentation ( 6 - 10)
model ( 5 - 10)
textures ( 6 - 10)
total:17
Not a bad entry, and again creative and has a style to it. The presentation is ok, the winning shot is a little dark, but you can still read the character pretty well so i like the attempted at something dramatic. However, everything seems really flat. The model is put together well for a low poly character, but with a 8000 tri limit it wouldn't have hurt to smooth a couple things out and add some definition. The texture I think I like the most, for the armor anyway. The texture for the armor stays pretty true to the concept and I commend you for that but the head falls a few steps short both in texture and in structure. In the model the nose and face looks a lot flatter than in the concept and i personally like the head of the concept much more.
third place
Vitor
presentation: ( 5 - 10)
model ( 5 - 10)
textures ( 5 - 10)
total: 15
It was very hard for me to put this entry into my top three, but considering the other entries I had to go with this one. First off the presentation of this puppy is in my opinion pretty lazy. Everything from the pose, lighting, and background screams rushed, but you made it into the top three so I guess your model and texturing makes up for the rest of it. As far as the model goes it looks pretty well constructed. Do i have a hard time believing its under 8000 tris, a little but it looks good. I personally like the armor most both texture and structure, minus the blood. I really wish you would have made a couple renders of the high poly for all of us too. The texture for me, once again, feels very rushed, all of it but the armor. The skin of the character is all completely the same boring gray color. It would have really helped if you would have thrown some highlights of red and yellow, and also some color in some of the darker areas of the body like blue and purple. It would have given it some life for sure, and I think I could probably say the same for De-evolving man's entry too, but a little more subtle. Over all i think this character feels a little phoned in to me and I only say that because i have seem some of your other work from polycount and I know you can do better.
As far as the other entries go I have a few comments for a couple of the characters that are getting some votes.
Warlock- This entry to me is completely uninspired. I'm not entirely sure why 4 1024 maps were necessary at all for this guy. The whole thing screams STANDARD!
Pogimonz- I think doing one Ninja Turtle for your portfolio was enough. Slapping some samurai armor on an old model should hardly qualify as a finished entry. Spin it any way you want its still a re-used model and I'm pretty disappointed it wasn't disqualified. And even with new armor...it’s till a ninja turtle.

first of all I want to appologize for posting this here, but I feel it's the most appropriate place for it.
Robiek1000: I respect opinions, really I do. But it's one thing to dis-like an entry, but then it's another to hate it or better yet "hate on it". I never denied the fact that he's a re-designed ninja turtle, I think it's pretty obvious w/ a title name "Samurai Turtle" and I even left the head mask, arm and leg bands to make it even more obvious. Who cares if it's not the most original idea, why? is it against the rules? and who doesn't like ninja turtles??? :smug:.. I made the project only for myself, for practice and portfolio. If I could maybe win something out of it, why the heck not?
And what was "quote:Slapping some samurai armor on an old model should hardly qualify as a finished entry" all about?? And just who do you think you are to say that my entry isn't qualified!? huh mr. moderator?.. The time, fun, passion, and effort put into the samurai turtle project is more than enough to make my entry over qualified.
It's a pity, when an artist choses to deny and not acknowledge another artist's talents and efforts.
I find your comment ridiculous (really isn't a critique nor a constructive comment). And posting a ninja turtle image under your comment, is simply lame and childish.
I'm sorry, I'm not the guy to act cool and pretend things don't bother me when they do.
I really think you're just jealous, because I made a pretty cool entry ;P. And to be honest and not cocky, my samurai turtle entry; in terms of skills, techique, and lets even add cool factor (jk) pretty much out-classes most if not all your low poly winning entries.
Seriously why even comment? I mean your not voting for me for top 3 or anything so why take the time to write nonsense about my awesome entry? Do you not have better things to do?.. Or did you just maybe subconsciuously really liked my entry and that somehow made you feel inadequate, threatened, jealous, and those feeling triggered the unnesessary comment?.. I'm curious, I really want to help man. If my entry was that bad and did not matter to you, you would've just left it alone, you obviously liked it, I mean it caught your attention and all. Am I reading you pretty well here?
For good sake! What do you say we settle this in the robot/androids comp? Put your money where the big mouth is.. And also, so your not just always snatching trophies from amatuers and people who're new in 3D. ;) I'll give you a run for your money, a challenge you'll never accomplish.
I know I'm not exactly winning good-guy browny-points here, but it's a forum for learning and all, I'm not exactly here to be liked. I let my work speak for themselves and that's what matters.

I'm sorry to post this here, but again, I believe this is the best place for it. If anyone takes the time to read this who is trying to break into the gaming industry, I believe it would be of value to them.
In response to Pogimonz comments, I have a few things to say. First of all, I need to let Pogimonz know that I respect his talents, and in no way wish to shame him. But this is an excellent learning opportunity for anyone who wishes to be a professional game artist some day.
RobbieK's comments were not gentle in the least, but as 3D artists we cannot afford to have thin skins. His comments to you were obviously his honest opinions, and I think anyone reading them would see he had valid points, even if his tone was unkind. But frankly, my Art Director's comments to me are even less gentle. If you cannot control your impulse to lash back at an unflattering critique, you will find it very difficult to get a job, and much worse, grow as an artist. I believe his posting of the Ninja Turtles in Samurai attire was purely to illustrate his point, but if it truly was a childish jab, I'd suggest ignoring it completely.
No Art Director will hire a cocky showboat, no matter how impressive his abilities may be. On several occasions our studio has flown prospective artists out for an interview because their abilities and talents were shown to be impressive. Yet time and time again these people were not offered jobs, due to their attitudes and demeanor. Every game studio needs to work in a tight-knit group, with each employee possessing a humble, genuine respect for all others. Part of this requires us to be absolutely honest with ourselves as artists. If you receive an unflattering critique, be humble enough to honestly debate if their opinions have any merit. If they do, you can grow and learn from their valuable input; if they don't, it becomes an exercise in patience and self-control, which can improve your maturity and tolerance as a human being. Either way, a thoughtful critique should be of great value to you.
"It's a pity, when an artist choses to deny and not acknowledge another artist's talents and efforts." -Coming from a friend, please beware of this attitude. There is no accounting for taste, and if someone genuinely doesn't like something you do as an artist, the worst thing you could do is assume they are just jealous, since any valid reason they might have that could improve your work would be dismissed. Thus an opportunity to improve an aspect of your work has just passed you by.
Pogimonz, think about the environment you are creating with your comments. "And also, so your not just always snatching trophies from amatuers and people who're new in 3D. I'll give you a run for your money, a challenge you'll never accomplish." First off, if you truly believe you are light-years beyond everyone else in the competition, wouldn't that mean that this is exactly what YOU are trying to do? Snatch trophies from amateurs? But more offensive is the condescending tone you are giving out to all the new-comers to 3D. Many come to forums like these to improve in a friendly environment without being condescended to. You're basically giving a giant middle finger to any new artists that have come here to improve. They work just as hard, if not harder, than the rest of us, and no one likes to be completely dismissed, or talked down to.
I'm writing this here because I think it's important for everyone to get back to the real focus of what this forum and others like it are all about. Community-building, self-improving environments that welcome all to learn together. The competition part with prizes and trophies are only to make it fun, to give us structure. Sadly, I think the focus has shifted.
Last point of advice; beware how you represent yourself online. Many Art Directors will frequent 3D forums, and comments like "I know I'm not exactly winning good-guy browny-points here, but it's a forum for learning and all, I'm not exactly here to be liked." will be a deathblow to your chances of being hired.
My suggestion is to do exactly what you claim to do: Let your work speak for itself. If you truly did let it speak for itself, you would not have found it necessary to strike back at what you felt was an unfair critique. Remember, competition is good as long as there's mutual respect. Take out the respect for your opponents and you just come across as a bully. I truly do respect your abilities, but beware of pride.

Originaly I posted a looooong reply/comment on here. But I decided to take it down. Since, I really just want this to end here and now.
TheQiwiMan: Thanks for the enlightenment. Though it's kinda biased and a bit exagerated. I see the constructive nature of it anway. :smug:
and sorry if I've offended anyone w/ my nasty remarks up there.. I'll try my best to play nice next time.. :lame:
lesson learned.. cheers.. and good day!

Wow. :wall: You poor oblivious little boy.
First, I know who Humfleet is; he's a good friend of mine that I have encouraged to join these forums. I'm sure you're aware that critiquing friends is hard to keep unbiased, but I wasn't about to tell him how to post. And if he liked my entry, why should that enrage you so much?
As far as the other two recent posters, I have no clue who either of these people are. Considering I recently updated my website with the models I entered here, I'm guessing they're people who found this thread through my website. (I do get a few hundred hits every month.) I sincerely hope they aren't friends of mine who just haven't told me they're posting, but I sincerely doubt that.
You are by far the most immature, arrogant person I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. Sadly, your abilities do not match your arrogance. I truly hope you work on your people skills if you ever hope to land a job as a game artist. I apologize if you found my advice corny. I didn't realize respecting others and trying to develop humility was corny, I just thought it was showing maturity.
Pretty interesting, childish response for a project you repeatedly affirmed was only "for yourself". Once again, who exactly is the one "trying to snatch trophys from amateurs"? I suggest you re-affirm your priorities. If a little internet picture can define how you see yourself, I'll give you this one for free. Congratulations.

WOW, I am very dissapointed of what this thread turned into.:wall:
@pogimonz
Look, what Robbiek1000 said might have been harsh but his overall Idea was correct its an artist job to know how to accept constuctive crits no matter how wrong they might sound. I think you really acted immaturley this time and do agree with TheQiwiMan. The whole idea of having public vote is testing peoples honesty. If people cheat their way into winning thats just something they will have to deal with.
please this board was meant for young and veteran artist to try and improve their skills. Lets all bring this discussion to an end. :hurt:
