The New SMC's - 039 - Stairway To Heaven
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Time Limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 1st of October 2008
Subject - Staircase

Brief: Make a beautiful staircase, stairs, stairway or flight of stairs. This could range from your own flight of stairs to an office exterior spiral or to an old garden staircase with weeds and moss.

Enjoy it, and get modelling.

Just a little bit of information about my starter, there's some extra window geometry lines that you can see at the rear of the upper floor but I decided against it in the end, but the lines still remain on the wireframe screengrab. The render is fairly plain, but I liked the clean look. I hope to see some really good entries this week, so good luck guys!

Well there's plenty of potential here, you could model a castle tower staircase or the RMS Titanic's stairwell, or a escalator to nowhere. There's lots of ways you can interpret this topic, and not by just going for the boring way like I have either :) I look forward to seeing some entries from you matey.

nice h2k1 - i tried to do the whole impossible stair scene - but failed miserably (twice) :) i think i took the wrong approach of buliding the scene and setting up the scales of the stairs. it never worked - not in perspective, not in orthoographic.... maybe i´ll try them later if i find out how to build and align an illisional scene. but cool you managed it - i´m proud of you! ;)

Check rule 7 as you may be ok:

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

26-09-2008, 03:32 PM
and Time Limit - 60 minutes, u only have to post one picture with ur render and screengrab wires...

Neil_F01
26-09-2008, 04:00 PM
Cheers for the insight.. am a bit dumb ass when it come to reading.. the mind of a goldfish would acutally be an upgrade.. lol.. Great news on rule 7.. means i might actually have a little time to go back in and fix the way the textures are running up the stairs.. wasn't all to happy with them...

although i have another idea now for a stairs.. kinda alice in wonderland style.. hopefully i'll have time to make it over the weekend...

h2k1 - yeah cheers.. i was gonna just throw them all into one psd file so that you had two views but then i was only displaying one image.. but my lunch time past and then i basically just had to rush to get it up before anyone really complained..

at least there aren't that many negative comments... lol

Amazing Starters CG and H20
h2k1: Lovely entries and really great work on those optical illusions.
Psycho Mantis: great model and render dude
EF_: absolutely amazing job. really great entry and love the way you render and present it.
rk821: welcome back dude. it's been a while and that entry of yours is a great come back piece.
Medusa: lovely concept and presentation.
Neil_F01: nice model and texture, great mood too!

Hope i did not miss anyone. Great job guys. here's my entry. I do hope you'll like it.

damn you!!!! you finished it. after 40 minutes i realized i would do it, and surrendered. :) but hey - awesome! looks so cool- i hava a question - are the stairs different, or all the same size. i measeured it out with a scale and modeld them all differently- and went crazy!

ClassicGamer-3DT
26-09-2008, 07:04 PM
I built all the stairs individually and then knew after an hour that it wasn't going to work, so I finished it anyway, it's a tricky one to do and it's doubtful that I could do it within an hour.

I love optical illusions though, they are very very clever.

Just a few comments about the entries..

Hk - nice models, bit simple.. but i do like the outline effect..
psyco mantis - bit grainy entry, and for some reason you've used lots of polygons.. not like you.
Ef - nice wheelchair.. God knows how you managed to build that in an hour.. But looks very nice though
Rk821 - like the stair case. Although I bet it would be a complete nightmare trying to get up and down after a night out on the ****..
Medusa - Like the planets, very nice concept
Nocturn - Nice entries, gotta love the renders very tidy..

Beta -- yeah if you check previous entries into this message board.. you'll see me saying that i did run over the time but i ran over because of rendering time... as then later went on to say that i didn't realise.. So on mondays lunch time (which is a given hour).. i'll be sorting out the multiple posts and re - typing the time so that there is no confusion... I can even take a screen grab of the render time if anyone is thinking that i'm trying to cheat here or something...

Classic Really nice starter - great render too - the lighting is spot on!

H20 Also a really nice starter, love the detailing in the railings, a very gothic feel - nice :D

h2k1 First Entry - nice simple entry, no fuss in the geometry, and a solid render too.
Second Entry - Very clever indeed! - you've pulled the illusion off perfectly, great job.
Third Entry - Another impossible build!! - you have a great eye for getting these right - a pleasure to view.

Psycho Mantis Outstanding samba stairway! - the model is simple, but the render is real!! - astonishing work

EF_ Lol! - Great idea, and very good use of particles - looks great, would make a good book cover :D

rk821 Crooked stairs - another simple model, given life with a good solid render - dramatic lighting from the front view - looking good.
Mountain stairs - Nice idea, and good inspiration, texture quality could be better, but this is a modeling competition, so i guess its irrelevant ! :D
Retractable stairs - really neat idea, and another good model and render - you're really bashing them out !!

Medusa A very nice finished piece, and great lighting too, matches the backdrop perfectly, and the moon is modeled !! - really like this entry.

Neil_F01 Very Tomb Raider esq! - Really nice model, and great attention to detail, could almost be from a tr cut scene! - apologies for causing problems about the multiple posts, I need to read things through :D

Nocturn8 I look forward to seeing what you will come up with - great first entry with the final fantasy stairs, nice clean model, flawless render.
Second Entry - one of my favorites, really really nice model and render, such a good feel to the image, great work.

Real 3D Superb illusion, really well executed, it fooled me, i looked for the 3d wire, and thought, eh!? - great stuff as usual.

Murda Really nice attention to detail with the carpet folds, and a very clean model - for me the brass on the pole bases could be improved, but otherwise, a very solid piece, and nice lighting too :D

billyreiter A nice reproduction, good clean wires, and nice lighting mimicking the reference photo (neat inspiration too!) good stuff.

spm3d one of the more gritty feeling entries, a look that i particularly like :D - very good model, faultless, and excellent use of textures and lighting - superb.

ThomsonX Neat concept, and well executed, perhaps a little yellow for gold, but otherwise a really neat finished image, great work - although check the rules re image size and wires :D

proArtS Very moody image! - what's going to come through the door?! - great image, some strange antialiasing issues on the edge of the door, but apart from that, i really like it :D

Well, thats my lot! - I wanted to take part this weekend, but too much happened, and back to work tomorrow, so maybe next time :D - great work everyone :D

Hello, everybody. Here's my second entry for this contest. I decided to make a rememberance piece, since the subject is stairway to heaven. My good friend Danielle loved butterflies, and I pictured her stairway to heaven being decorated with butterflies. Hope you all like it.

Neil_F01 Very Tomb Raider esq! - Really nice model, and great attention to detail, could almost be from a tr cut scene! - apologies for causing problems about the multiple posts, I need to read things through :D

Cheers for the comments.. nice to know that you think its that good, especially considering how little time went into it.. So anyway.. i just thought i'd try and resolve the confusion by redoing the entry and putting the page back up there..

Hopefully i'll be putting my second one up there after lunch...but you never know..

Took me a while to post this up. Did this on Friday. Loosely based on the stairway to heaven at the vatican, albeit with less details. Gonna have to do another one as this render is dull as heck.
Here's a link to the vatican one: LINK (http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/00/15/27/c7/vatican-stairway-to-heaven.jpg)

And my attempt at it.

As i said in one of my earlier post's.. i spent a good 20 - 30 mins on rendering... and so included the render time in my submission.. but then someone pointed out rule number seven and that render time isn't included.. So basically considering there was all the confusion about the image, and the fact that i posted multiple images.. i thought it would be best to basically redo the page.. this time taking out the amount of render time... If you look i still put in the amount of time i spent on the render..

Anyway... Apologies for the confusion and cheers for the comments.. Very much appreciated..

Cheers for the insight.. am a bit dumb ass when it come to reading.. the mind of a goldfish would acutally be an upgrade.. lol.. Great news on rule 7.. means i might actually have a little time to go back in and fix the way the textures are running up the stairs.. wasn't all to happy with them...

although i have another idea now for a stairs.. kinda alice in wonderland style.. hopefully i'll have time to make it over the weekend...

h2k1 - yeah cheers.. i was gonna just throw them all into one psd file so that you had two views but then i was only displaying one image.. but my lunch time past and then i basically just had to rush to get it up before anyone really complained..

at least there aren't that many negative comments... lol

Aleg8r, you could get stuck on that staircase for days just going round and round and up and down.
Then again I guess the same could be said for walking up one of those escalators, if it's going down.

Anyhow enough of that philosophical musing. I gave this a second go with a different staircase. Originally I was going to put a window in the back wall but didn't get time. Just turned the light on instead ;)

I don't know about the two weeks, i mean i seriously dont think i can be bothered to make another staircase... i was kinda looking forward to doing the next event.. whatever that is...

still i am unsure how or when the verdicts of previous weeks happens... I mean you don't do what they do in the sculpting challenges where everyone picks the winner and you total up the votes and ta da... (such a cool system)..

but anyway...

I agree, that we had cool entries here, but for me i can say, another topic would be great. a stair is a stair.. not much room for interpretation. i´d like something "fantastic" - where you can go extreme.

H2O-3DT
30-09-2008, 04:09 PM
The subject will run for 2 weeks.
I have to disagree that the subject is limited, stairs are wonderfully varied and different. Keep in mind that stairs are there to solve a specific problem, and they have to solve it not only technically, but also esthetically.
But at the same time, beautiful design does not mean that the stairs are comfortable to walk up or down, and that is important :)

Cheers

i agree here - as they do that in the speed scultping challenge and competitors always seem to have the results back by the end of the week that they challenge was in.. it certainly would make the mods lives easier.. unless they get a real kick out of being the ones who make the final decision.. in that case this is probably a right offensive statement.. huh.. lol..

i think this is a good method. for me, these challenges are fun and education - the price itself is less important to me. but getting good critics from all you others means a lot, so i would like to have users-rank-users system. or a dual system - so the mods can also post their judging. i´d be fine with that.

One issue that has come up repeatedly with a user voting system is:
Would people vote for the best modeling or just vote for what they think looks coolest - they are not always the same.
It is not like other challenges that are more art and composition based, where technique becomes just a tool. The smcs are primarily about how well something is modeled - it may be difficult to get voting to go this direction.
Having set judges should eliminate this bias

...However, maybe it is time for a change - perhaps have a mod post all that aren't dq and have members + mods vote

Either way, these smcs are just fun for me - it's never been about the prize (although I would like a gold stopwatch for week 53 and 100 )
