Our guide for preparing models for 3d printing can also be downloaded here (http://www.3dtotal.com/services/3dprinting/images/The%20Basics%20of%20Growing%203D%20Models.zip).
The Rules:
1. The competition will last two weeks, which will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. You must work only with the base meshes provided and must not add any additional base meshes or Subtools!
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt is a staff sculpt. Do not sculpt a mage/wizard/sorcerer/warlock alongside it for this competition. Do so in your free time and out of the competition, if you really want to.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "manage attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can have multiple entries, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Final Submissions thread, here. (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=62064)
These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the supplied base meshes at the bottom of this post. Take them and go subdivide!
The Brief:
Time limit: 5 hours
Start Date: 30th September, 20:00 GMT+0
Deadline: 14th October, 12:00 GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))
Subject: Magical Staff
Know that the age of magic has once again settled over the land. During these times of arcane manifestations, all has fallen into desolate chaos. What were once vast kingdoms are now crumbled and the armies of men, elves, and all other races battle fiercely, manipulated in secret by powerful lords of magic.
These wizards are few, but they control forces of unimaginable power, ranging from the mastery over the elements to wielding the energies of the dark abyss itself.
Yet for all the forces available to them, these men of power would be as nothing without their legendary weapons of magic channeling, each's own magical staff.
Fellow sculpters, at the start of this dark arcane age, it comes to you to depict these magic staves of immense power. Along with a magical staff, you may decorate it by adding up to three trinkets ( using the base meshes provided ) that can be anything from crystals to windswept ribbons, etc.
As the wyvern flies, now march unto your work.
The Meshes:
Your base meshes are attached to this post - simply click on the attachments at the end of this post, save the files and you're on your way!
The base mesh is a basic, featureless tall box ( we really don't want to influence your creative vision on the subject at hand ). You just need to import the staff.obj file into your ZBrush or Mudbox scene, and get started!
You are also allowed to add three trinkets to your staff. As such, use the trinket.obj file up to three times. Please also note that you mustn't add any more objects! Use only what has been provided and nothing more!! This is the challenge after all!

Ive started this one already.Sketched up 3 various styles of staff.
Decided to go for a demon staff.I have spent 53 minutes on the skull made from 1 trinket.2nd trinket i made a cobra, time at this stage is 35mins.i intend to spend 1 hr or just over on her.I then cloned the cobra to make my 3rd trinket.
Heres a screengrab of the 3 trinkets.:)
So many ideas so little time only 1 staff:).

Woah, those were some hardcore weeks. Fact is there are several reasons why the challenges are a bit more spread out now. Most importantly is that taking two weeks gives more people a chance to join ( which I hope they will! ). Each challenge also takes one or two mods to constantly check over them, and need love and attention. :)
But here's what. Tell your artist friends about the challenges. Join in yourself ( this goes for ANYONE reading this right now ), we don't care if you're an amateur, a pro, or just curious. If I see a growth in entries in this challenge than in past ones, I'll make sure you get challenges more often ( maybe every two weeks, if all bodes well ).
Now get to sculpting those staves. Wizards don't just cast spells with pitchforks. Mana doesn't grow on trees. Warlocks don't summon with raspberries... ah, you get the idea.

Jose, nothing's stopping you from popping up a sculpt of your own. This is all in the name of fun and learning. So when you've got a couple of hours, put your favourite music in winamp, and give it a try.

02-10-2008, 11:34 AM
Okay i have given it a start.
didn't use a concept, all i knew was that i wanted a wooden carved staff...just started clay brushing and went with the flow.
after 20 minutes i knew wich way i was going...a plan formed to put a trinket in the mouth...but it might look like big teeth with a stupid grin.
have some plans for changes as wel....i want it to look a bit sad and will try and drape some vines down the staff for a bit more entertainment.(elemental)
don't think i will use trinkets..hehehe mostly cus i'm lazy...preparing for printing.......all ready done..it's one closed mesh hehehehe (not assuming i will win,,,but so far only 2 participants.
and i do feel we need more wips....common people
so far 1.5 hours spend on zbrush..oh wait heres my wip...

does the 5 hours include any sketches or conceptual stuff?
Hey there mdale13. The five hours include direct sculpting. Any concepts, sketches or reference gathering is not in the five hours given. Good question.
strict9
02-10-2008, 01:22 PM
concepting shouldn't be part of the time limit...it's sculpting time limit.
normally i guess you would get a concept and you go sculpting from there.......now you get a description...so now you have to be the concepty as well.....anyway my 2 cents
couldn't help myself,,,crawled back behind the computer:
add 30 minutes to the sculpt please hehehe:

I like how the staff's shaping up, strict9. The ram horns are a cool touch. Looks like a nature magic oriented staff, to me.
However, maybe there's more to do with the mouth. It looks a little empty as it is now.

hey guys!
this is my first entry in the sculpting challenge! i am very excited to be a part of this!
this is my staff so far. i am going for like a troll-witch doctor type staff (notice the somewhat shortened proportions) it will eventually have shrunken heads or skulls on it or something using the 3 allowable trinkets. so far i have the basic forms of a knarled staff. let me know what you think!
edit: oh yeah and about 45 minutes into the 5 hours :)

thanks Freespace, I had to work quick on it so I can get Back to the concept work for Unearthly Challenge. :D LOL

02-10-2008, 06:08 PM
mdale: I like the area where the troll would hold the staff. Now you just need to give the staff something special, with trinkets. You've got the base done, give it life. ;) Welcome to the challenge.
Cederstrom: The faster you're done, the faster you get to do other things. I want a staff like that for myself, though.

02-10-2008, 07:10 PM
cookedmouse: Welcome, then! If it's your first time using Zbrush, you might try downloading the free Mudbox trial first, and see how that works for you. It's much easier to use, but ( until Mudbox 2009 comes out in a few days ) Zbrush can let you subdivide a LOT further and do more intricate sculpts.

Aleks: Hahahaha, got you out of your lair with that one, didn't I? :) Well, I've read somewhere that it comes out on the 6th October. And over at Autodesk, it says Pricing and Availability
Autodesk anticipates that Mudbox 2009 will be available in October 2008. Mudbox 2009 will be supported on the Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows Vista operating systems.
It's gonna be awesome! And I hope you get a few hours until the 14th for this. It would be a shame to miss out on the fun. And one of those 7inch prints.
longhi: It's really cool and brutal. Someone shoved a staff up that orc's neck. What it could use, in my opinion, is having someting pierced in the orc's ear hanging down. Use a trinket for it if you've got any left.
bgen: Hey, I'm hoping you're in this too, dude. You've got skillz.

Theres a good competition going on here....skulls-dragons-trolls all very fitting for a good magical staff me thinks.
I'm coming to an end of mine i think.....theres only so much a elemental/nature staff can have for ornaments......tried a few things to decorate but it became a bit ugly, did add 2 trinkets in the end...a gem in the mouth and a footstand ....foot can go if it's not allowed.
i kept the objects all lose...they arn't touching in any way (or should it?)
anyway, really enjoyed making the staff......got about 1 hour left...but i'll have to think hard if i want to change anything.
so heres my final wip before i post the final.

strict9: I don't know what else you can do to it, but I think that jewel in his mouth would be troublesome if you win a 3d
It's okay....if i do win...(which isn't likely).....i can leave the gem off.
The 3d print is just the price...the rules don't state it has to be printable:smug:.
My little understanding that i have of printing is that there can be no holes or overlapping bits in a mesh so the trinkets might be a bad idea to start with.
could be that printing has changed as well, so than again it can....lets find out pick me for a winner and we will see if the gem is a problem hahahahahaha
Had a lot of fun making it and i am very pleased with it...might use it for something else later.

mre: I see how you're planning this. Maybe some wear&tear on that skull would help. Some cracks, and a little more distinction between the main head bones ( temporal, parietal, occipital ) with subtle scratches.
Keep up the good magic work, everybody!

How did you guys take the screen shot with all four orthographic views of the model in it?
Don't know about mudbox but i do know zbrush.
When you use zbrush you can say press save document.....it sticks all the (visible) objects on a layer...you turn and move the object and save again...now thats on the same layer
It doesn't do anything with the layer...It's basicly a screen shot inside the program.
so when you delete the layer you basicly left with just the objects again.
(my zbrush knowhow is limited but i'm learning a bit more bit by bit)

thanks guys .........im a bit of a dragon fiend ......also love my aliens too.......cliches that never get old in my book .....
also had a great discovery doing this model .......a great way to do quick scales
Using the stitch 3 tool in zbrush but replacing the alpha with one i made myself ......i also extended the lazy mouse radious a bit and just draged out the scales.
Not perfect but great for a challenge like this with time constraints
Heres the alpha i made for anyone that wants to try it
Freespace-3DT:thanks for your comment i have 1.5 hour and i will try my best.
an other update.

05-10-2008, 10:39 AM
I just realised the challenge is 5 hours not 4 ......!!!! wooo hooo........ think ill refine it a little
Freespace-3DT -tnx alot! i used the trinkets for the hummingbird and just cloned it to make a total of 3 trinkets plus the staff itself
capitan_popo -tnx so much! really appreciate it!
strict9 -tnx! i wanted to have something different from the usual looks of
magical staffs and so i turned to nature's charm and simple beauty as reference.
DELTATHUND3R- tnx so much!
mrpeculiar- very hot model! great staff that stick turned out to be!

mrpeculiar: Thanks for sharing your scale technique. And yeah, you got an hour left, so maybe there's something you want to perfect.
mre: The idea is very cool, having a ghostly presence around what I guess is a necromancer's staff. However, in case you win any of the first three places, that staff would be quite impossible to print in 3d. Just a thought. :)

Sweet Jesus! Welcome back, Emeth! Been wondering where you were. :)
That's an awesome start to the staff. I like the idea of a subdued demonic essence.

And a great entry from VersionThirst! The two hands holding together is original. The whole staff looks intricate, bony and evil, I must say.

So here is my staff so far. I've got about an hour left and I still have not used one trinket (the horns are the other two).
As for an explination..
This staff is a warning. Long ago, in a forgotten land.. a man rose up against the laws of nature. Calling himself a 'Dark Wizard', he inflicted pain and suffering on all that he saw. With no regard for the earth, he began creating beasts and demons to destroy and spread his hate throughout the land. No longer being able to stand by and watch this mortals insolence, the Spirits of the Earth decided to make an example of this 'wizard' and his beasts. After slaying the wizard and his dragon, the Spirits encapsulated both of their skulls, along with all their power, into this one staff... to serve as a reminder to all those who seek to spread hate.
... or something like that :)

longhi- Orcs rule, so mad props there. seriously looks like something a dwarf would use bwahahaha!
emeth03 - O_o ...drool...
slangford - really awesome skull.
mafida - whao man, really creepy. How big is the wizard that has a man sized staff??? So creepy awesome.
great entries from everyone! I ended up doing about 3 hours of mine all in one go, so please c&c. Schedule is super tight but i think i can fit in some more time to mess with this guy.
the main piece is the stick + ribcage, the head is a trinket and so is the shirt. So i might do something with the other cube, if i get time.

Hey guys,
Firstly I have to say, the challenge is really cool. A lot of great artists and ideas arround. And totaly amazing are the prices! It would be amazing to hold something you did in hands.. and look at it, man its real 3D! Its not anymore only on your flat LCDs. So, thanks for that :)
I would like to join to the challenge too. I made Magical Gigers Alien Staff :). It took me 4:40. Ok, now some base rules for the staff:
- The staff is organic
- The eggpod kicking up the face huggers - its like a thrower (if someone turn against you the staff, you guys, have a big problem)
- The Alien tail - the other end of the stalf - serves as a melee weapon
One more thing, I have some materials which I did besides I worked on that and I have recordet all the almost 5 hours too.. so It will be public soon.
So, hope you like it and see ya :)

slangford - nice st(a/u)ff, man! Maybe just the contrast between the skull and the teeth could be a little more accentuated (I had to use a dictionary to find this word, so I hope it fits).
Maxko - Good to see another fellow countryman here on Threedy. Great staff, and I´m looking forward to the recorded material. (Nice presentation there on Duber.tv, btw.)
