Well last night at midnight the book I spent a year of my life working on was finally released. 'Essential ZBrush' hit the shelves and is now available at Amazon and similar outlets, with shops around the world getting stock over the next 7 days. This book contains it all..every workflow, type of sculpting,(from organics and hard surface to environment modelling etc...) Normal and Displacement map pipelines for both Maya and 3d Max…. lets the reader learn as he/she constructs not a single model or even a couple of models but an entire scene that's taken to final render over the course of the book. This book contains more than I could add here in 16 posts.

Add to this the 3 hours of footage that shows the creation of ‘The Guardian’ character from the front cover (and main scene we create), and the many extras such as 50 plus custom Matcap's, custom brushes, alphas and stencils that are available nowhere else and much more and you’ve got a book I'm intensely proud to put my name to.

This book outlines many brand new and never written or seen on video before workflows to help make life that bit easier. I'll get some pics up on this blog as soon as I’m able to of this 754 page monster of a book. With Glen Southern acting as technical editor and contributing the design of the Guardians weapon you know that this is a book you're going to want to have in your collection. This is hardcore ZBrush learning aimed at everyone from total beginners to advanced users. This is a long book and your sure to find it interesting.

Enjoy

Thanks Warin, I spent the best part of 12 months on it so in some ways I'm glad its out now lol. I dont think its possible to fit more into one book than I did with that one. :)

Excellent stuff Wayne, although it's not quite the same as hearing you're accent in your tut vids. Unless we adopt the accent style as we read :)

You're a really talanted sculpter though, up there with Alex Oliver in my opinion. You're Mudbox videos are really easy to follow and i'm sure this book will sell out just like your DVD's :)

Best of luck with it.

Thanks CG, although you wont escape my dulcet tones that easily! (There's 3 hours of video on the DVD that comes with the book. lol) I just do what I do and hope someone finds it interesting to look at apart from myself. What I tried to do was to write the book I would have wanted to read when I was starting out. I wanted to fit as much knowledge in it as I could possibly fit into it. In case anyone wonders what the book loooks like 'in the flesh', I've stuck a quick photo above.

You couldn't be more right about iconography. I've noticed that the brow and mouth seem to be the biggest struggling points people have. Way too many sculptures out there just draw in the lips and eyebrows without thinking about how the mass behaves around them. Even though I'm aware of these traps, I look at some of my recent work and still see these flaws.

One of the reasons I put small sections such as that one throughout the book was that its often forgotten that digitsl sculpting is not jst about moving polygons around. A lot of other things also come into play as well. So this is more than justa theory or project book. So far it seems to be doing exceedingly well despite no promotion to speak of other than a few posts of mine.

My Royalties are the same ammount even if they gave it away free so it's no big deal to me. Although I'm guessing you didn't realise that. ;) Hey if you can get it cheap go for it....

I did - and now there's no need to feel guilty.

I'm quite looking forward to this, the only other "how to do 3d" books I own are one by mr stahlberg and one by paul steed - I guess that puts you up there with the greats :D

I'm not into Zbrush, but I've read the samples, and I've just gotta say, you've got a great way with words, Wayne. Congrats for finishing a year's worth of work, hope your sales go off the charts.
