View Full Version : waspbot 2008
ok giving myself a break from clients and the living room for a while. im trying to get used to moi so i thought i would model my wasp bot i designed a while back (about the same time as the ant bot)
so here is it so far (only spent a couple of hours on it so far)
10-10-2008, 03:08 PM
Great smooth modeling!
I like it! :)
Looking forward for this one...
10-10-2008, 03:46 PM
wow, i like that concept and modeling is also great. I am looking forward.
thanks guys. if it turns out as i want i will have to do the scene that is in my head with the ant bot and wasp bot which should be nice
10-10-2008, 04:37 PM
Is that nurbs? Nice work, what software?
"im trying to get used to moi" yes its nurbs and its "moi" :)
10-10-2008, 05:21 PM
what is "moi"?
google mans best mate ;)
basically its made by the guy that wrote rhino, but is now making which is aimed at being easier to use and is cheaper. but it is a powerful set of tools imho.
10-10-2008, 08:33 PM
love your work DD, but this isnt anything to get excited about, its looking very similar to your other ones :(, cant you make him have some killer unique thing like... dunno ill leave that to you hehe
good comment nexusbird so no :( needed and yes its similar to my antbot if i did this when i was supposed to ie when i did the antbot then it would have fitted better as a theme. aww well thanks for being honest mate
That's looking like a good start
I want to follow this one, I'm trying to learn aliasstudio for school, but I find the interface annoying (alt-z for undo? what's up with that?)...ahem, anyway - I love the simplified interface of moi.
I'm curious as to how the refinement and detailing comes along - keep up the good work :)
moi is good yes, this is only really the 2nd time ive used it so fingers crossed it all goes well
here is another updatehttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3279/2930572953_beb9fd6b0e_o.jpg

So far looks really good...
I like the way it turned out...
11-10-2008, 12:00 PM
I think you should make something else to close the gap between the parts,
something a bit bigger than those little arms...
Keep up the good work :)
no need for bigger arms as they are made from the strongest metal known to all mankind and the body casing is made from the strongest yet lightest material known to all mankind too :)
atleast they are bigger than what i used for the antbot and that has a huge fat arse butt. :)
thanks guys pleased you are liking it so far
11-10-2008, 01:33 PM
your welcome DD, its looking pretty good so far i'm hoping the wings are going to be good looking forward for them.
oh no, dont you be expecting loads of little frames and cloth etc for the wings because i am thinking top rail/frame and then a foil wing(ish) shaped plate. just thought i would prewarn you :)
ok started on the wing
11-10-2008, 07:49 PM
That program looks alot like Inventor. heard of it?
That program looks alot like Inventor.
no, not really
Nice progress dd_, I like what your doing with the pivot for the wings
ok here is another update
12-10-2008, 10:16 AM
I always look forward to your work. You don't look to dissapoint. Does Moi have a native rendered or will you export?
thanks for the kind words and pleased you like this one :)
no renderer in moi so i will export it to c4d and either use AR3 or fryrender. stay tuned for more
and now the legs
and more to see how they look
12-10-2008, 01:26 PM
Looks awesome so far.
12-10-2008, 02:28 PM
his wings look a bit small to support his big bum!, i just keep imagining him flying and cant see it with them small wings. plus wasp wings generally flare out at the end.
and nobody thought a bumble bee could fly. i will have a look at making them longer
12-10-2008, 04:07 PM
Interesting software and nicely modelled already.
Maybe you could have a mini bot battle sort of Street Fighter meets robo-insects type thing.
Will you be using Fry Render again, the renders for you're antbt were photoreal.
Very nice to see, and it's great to take a break from the livingroom scene for a little bit, keeps things fresh I think.
i have a collection of bugs (dead and behind glass) that i bought so i could make them into bots. this was after i did the antbot so maybe my scene that is in my head will come out sooner rather than later :)
yes the software is nice to use. i said i dont know if i will be using fry or ar3 yet. im pretty sure now that the ant is already set up to be in fry then this will end up that way too.
12-10-2008, 08:38 PM
Just looking at it and I have an allergic reaction :)
13-10-2008, 09:46 AM
dd_:thanks for mentioning moi. I downloaded it and it´s just great!
yes moi is pretty useful imho and cheaper than rhino so all is good
and more done
import test into c4d
14-10-2008, 08:52 AM
Very cool work so far!
This model reminds me of when I seen a wasp and a dragonfly collide in mid-air one day on the way to school and they began fighting on the ground. First the wasp cut off each wing one-by-one so it couldn't get away, then it cut the head off and flew away with it... Fight lasted about 40 seconds or so... Just thought I'd share that with you :) Always thought it would be cool to make an animation of it.
lol thanks mate
wasps are really nasty little gits indeed and i cant work out what they actually give to nature apart from bullying other insects and stinging peeps
cooler vents added
looks cool, and I'm looking at MoI because of this thread... Very interesting, but somethings take some getting used too.
14-10-2008, 09:40 PM
wasps are useless they have nothing good to come out of them, they attack people, they make nests in your homes, they steal bees honey, and the list can go on!, lets hope DD's wasp isnt like these :P
yes some things do take time to get used to, this is one reason i set myself this project and its working as i am getting used to all the tools now. \0/
nexusbird : yes they are nasty gits
texturing in c4d decided to opt for some high strength acrylic/ abs wings
15-10-2008, 10:13 AM
Wow man! Great stuff!
Get us some closer renders will ya?
15-10-2008, 11:30 AM
I just love the carbon-like stuff, good job.
ok here are some more shots
right time to find my antbot model :)
15-10-2008, 09:26 PM
them textures like fricking A!, i like the wings they kinder magnifies what ever is behind it, awesome stuff.
16-10-2008, 09:59 AM
dd great wasp i like it, you modelled it in max but why use C4d to add colour
psst i didnt model it in max ;) i modeled it in moi and i didnt just add colour ;)
and they meet
16-10-2008, 05:19 PM
Great job on them. I really like, em, all of it.
16-10-2008, 06:26 PM
FIGHT FIGHT, put them at war DD! make a cool scene
i have an idea for a scene in my head so stay tuned
17-10-2008, 07:13 AM
Any chance on seeing a scary looking stinger on that thing. Oh, and that's one weird ant. Can't wait to see your scene.
no stinger sorry :/ yes its a strange ant with a big fat butt :) but they do come with huge butts sometimes
just thinking out loud now. sun lamp added
17-10-2008, 11:29 AM
This is just awesome!!!
I have a question though: how do you prevent the model getting all messed up when importing it. I´m using max, and i´have to use the time i saved modeling in moi, to clean it up again. So: do you save it as an obj? And is it better to go for a lot of polys or less?
i exported as obj and left the slider half way for the poly count and it came in clean :/
17-10-2008, 09:43 PM
eww thats too pretty we want violence!
lol thought you would say that. :)
18-10-2008, 08:42 AM

18-10-2008, 12:44 PM
there some hardcore wasps :D
ok i lost the ****** model file for the antbot and flowers so ive had to model the flowers again. (two ****** days of searching and nothing :/)
18-10-2008, 04:20 PM
kk this is looking better, shame about the antbot, you will just have to model a killer spider!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no no no ive got the antbot model (thank god) but i lost the scene file i had with the antbot and flowers i made. so thankfully i only have to remodel the flowers :)
i have a glass display full of dead bugs and i thought i would model the spider next so maybe you get your wish :)
and another test render
18-10-2008, 07:35 PM
That light seems to produce some cool effects. Looks real too. Is that Fryrender? I can't tell.
18-10-2008, 08:34 PM
18-10-2008, 08:51 PM
my wish would be to suck your brain of your knowledge and get a kick ass job in 3d :(
Awesome new renders! Its definietly a physical renderer calculating those :p Thats for sure.
Really realistic, and the designs are amazing too
yes its an unbiased engine :)
thanks guys and no you cant suck my brain as i dont have enough for me.
19-10-2008, 02:51 PM
thats fryrender right? i been reading up about it.
19-10-2008, 04:12 PM
Awesome concept man.
waspbot glory shot ( i thought i would render a large version for my desktop (maybe))
23-10-2008, 01:26 AM
Oh yeah, that shot is my favorite so far. Nice lighting. How do you set your lighting up to get such great highlights?
pleased you like it mate.light cards like a soft box is my usual way
here is a link that may help (click the "xelum at work" on the left)
23-10-2008, 10:18 AM
This last one render is very stylish!
What did you used for render engine in C4D?
its fryrender plugin for c4d and thanks mate
24-10-2008, 05:43 AM
no scary stinger?:(
24-10-2008, 09:31 PM
I like nearly all of your fry work, Dave and this one is no exception!
I have only the ability to work with the demo-version, but Fry is so powerful and easy to learn, that I love it!
Keep it up Sir :)
25-10-2008, 12:21 AM
Awesome, looks like it would actually work!
thanks for you kind words mate (its dave btw) just remember fry is just a tool not the magic solution, but yes its a powerful tool indeed
thanks mattchin that was one of the goals :)
ok sod it i aint about to start a new thread for this one (dont want to be a spammer on the boards), but today i decided to moi one of my mech designs. so i shall be posting them in here
25-10-2008, 06:46 PM
Looking good man!
The head area looks like something out of StarWars.
25-10-2008, 07:39 PM
The legs seem a little flimsy compared to the cockpit/pod/main body. Nothing else to crit :)
its "inprogress" mate lol sorry couldn't help it. yes they are thinner and smaller etc but they are metal/ alloy and the top half is light weight carbonish material. so it will work. or maybe it will just fall over head first due to the weight who knows. its nothing serious and i am sure once its done it will be technically unachievable , but im hoping it will be nice to look at ;). im basically using this as the same as the waspbot an excuse for me to get used to moi (which i must say im starting to love )
and another one
26-10-2008, 08:00 AM
Great Job for both projects, The program also looks cool, its worth a try:wave:
26-10-2008, 10:14 AM
Great idea to post here!!
Keep it on!!
i thought it was too, one big mega wip thread with random bot things. more to come soon
and another one
