Perversonality: I tried using an alpha texture on a flat plane then reshaping it but it was too fiddly for curly hair. I am going to give it another shot and a few examples would be great.

I didn't get the chance to do anything last night but I should be around this evening so I'll post something up then :)

Poopipe - thanks for the rules on the particals, i dont think i have enough time to warrent doing all that anyway and haveing a decent result thanks anyways :)

Perversonality - thanks for the advice on texturing i am trying that atm and seems to be going well thanks for the advice :)

dont have anything worth showing atm going to work on a rig to pose my character and the testure :)

chiba: you should bring the hands down to shoulder level, that will help with proportions and size of the shoulders. Right now, the shoulders look to be too big, but it could just be because they are too far in/close to the neck. If you move the shoulders out so that they are lined up with the hips, you should be good to go.

Chung that looks amazing, are you using AO maps as well? also freddy has a stripe shirt black/red but obviously u knew that.

Hello everyone!

Chung Wong : Looks amazing, really good work.

Joseph Pomeisl and Mr.Buddah thankS for the comments. Changes have been made, hopefully for the better.

Joseph Pomeisl I really like you how the textures are looking so far.

Update from me, hopefully it will be easier to see where am going with this, kinda comic horror!

Hopefully I will get this finished, but I got a funny feeling I wont :( . Need to get arse into gear for uni

Not to sure about having the apron? Anyways, what you all think?

Hi Guys,

My first wip,

Perversonality

Slightly later than promised (having a life is a terrible thing ;))

For curly hair I would probably do one of the following:

http://www.lowpoly.co.uk/images/threedy/helpers/hair_004.jpg

The first one is a cylinder which has been stretched a bit at the top. The pros are that it's pretty easy to do, the cons are that the texturing is a little trickier as you have to match up the hair loop edges properly sso that you don't get seams.

The second one (ignoring the spline) was created using a cube. Select one face and then use Extrude along Spline with the helix as the spline:

http://www.lowpoly.co.uk/images/threedy/helpers/hair_001.jpg

This makes a bit of a mess:

http://www.lowpoly.co.uk/images/threedy/helpers/hair_002.jpg

To fix it I selected the 2 rear bottom-to-top edge loops and hit delete to remove 3 of the 4 sides of the shape to give a loop made out of 1 sided polys.

The final method which would be good for solid low poly hair used the same approach, but I simply selected the use face normals tick box. This creates a much more tidy mesh which needs no further editing. This is the final object in the first image.

http://www.lowpoly.co.uk/images/threedy/helpers/hair_003.jpg

Edit:

Final method...

http://www.lowpoly.co.uk/images/threedy/helpers/hair_005.jpg

This is possibly the easiest method to texture at the end as all the polys are the same so you could texture all the polys with the same small texture... Create an ngon with flat sides and corner verts, splitting one of the verts. Move each vertex up by a set amount (use snap for this). If you have 8 verts then the verts will be at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 for example. Clone the spline vertically and weld the verts together to make the spline a continuous line. Hit extrude spline and job done :)

if i wasnt an athiest, i would think the CG-Gods have it in for me. good news, i got my graduation project for school. something like a half year early. bad news, now i got no time left what so ever... :S

ill keep tabs on all your progress guys. hopefully ill be able to finish the next contest... :(

Branduarte: a nice start. But, from comments I got on my first competition enrty it seems that mesh/turbo/NURMS smooths are kinda frowned upon. Best wishes and welcome to the challenge - now let's see some facets:) Although, I think Smooth Groups are fine...
Perversonality: neat stuff.
Tank[NL]:There is a contradiction: atheist = no God, cg-gods = polytheist.
God loves you anyway. Hope school turns out for you.
Rogue One: looks better, tough to tell from those angles though. Maybe the apron folds could be done in the texture, save yourself some tri's - the pan could probably be just 12 sided and still look good; don't know how much you have left to model so saving may not be important. Is that an apple in his mouth?
Hopefully post an update soon, paint, switch to max and check, swith back, back to max, back to PS...I can only do so much of it - wah, wah, wah:hmm:

Tetsuya: your witch looks great. really nice textures and the hair is looking pretty good. keep at it man. and gl with applications :)

Poopipe: Looks nice, really like your low poly model.
Tetsuya: Looking good, but be careful of that seem on the neck. Those lips are really coming along nicely though :)
Rogue one: Cheers, I hope you get it finished, looking good.
Ryvick: Thanks mate. Yeah, I baked out ao maps for this, I do with most of my models, I like the way it looks. But sometime's, I find that it can kill the normal map a bit so I don't turn it all the way up. As for the strips, I've started on it, have posted the progress below. Still need to dirty it up some what. Hoping to wrap this up tomorrow, just need to finish the texture map and spec map, I can't be arsed to make a base I don't think but will rig it.

chung : the model looks too shiny, if you havent got to making ur specs yet then dont worry. looks really good keep at it.
tetsuya : those puckers seems to be rdy for a kiss. was that intentional? keep them in normal state maybe instead of puckered up.
branduarte : head is coming along really nice. the teeth and the eyes are dead on. good job.

Perversonality: thanks for the tips they were very helpful, i tried them all and i found that the easiest way was just using a cylinder ,i also found that textureing was a lot easier using the first method as well. Here is my first try which doesn't look to bad, but i'll give it another shot for my final model which i better hurry up and finish.

Looks promising. The fringe is way too low, so pull that back a bit and then have the curls start slightly lower downwith longer hair. If you taper the lower ends too then it should be great. Something like this perhaps for the style, though more in line with your concept for the overall shape:

Ok, this is all mapped out, diffuse, spec, normal, & opac. Anyone have any C/C? otherwise I'm going to start rigging and setting up for the winning pose.

Tetsuya I like your model, nice texturing, the lips still look a little "pucker-ish" to me but that's my opinion.

ChungWong Ace's all the way! textures are superb! I hope to see a killer setting for you final pose, boiler room perhaps?

Poopipe Witch is coming along great! Looking foward to your final pose as well.

Daddy OH: Everything looks awesome man! I agree about the feet and the only things I would sugguest is perhaps a few wrinkles in the jeans and the one side of the knife looks more dirty than the other. Other than that you've got an awesome entry that will certaintly earn my vote!

Cheers~

Thanks for the compliment & preemptive vote:smug: I've already fixed the feet, I have'nt gotten around to an update yet. As for the knife, its was mapped on a plane, its identical on both sides I think it looks weird in that last post b/c of the defualt lighting in max depending on what angle the model was viewed at.

wee! it's finally all smashed down into a single map :D

i did a quick green test on the skin - I'm thinking it looks like quite a good colour, I'm much happier with the greyer cloak and generally im feeling pretty good about it :)

viewport grab : just normal, diffuse and greyscale ambient map for the moment

@poopipe - looks a little too yellow/green to me mate. Perhaps bring it back a little bit towards a flesh colour or alternatively a darker green with a yellowish tinge

poopipe
20-11-2008, 11:14 AM
perv: yeah, I think you're right I don't want to go too green cos it'll start looking goblinesque so I'll pull some of the flesh tones back into it I think

I've been messing round with this for a pedestal while waiting for stuff to happen at work...

Looks very nice, Poopipe! What's the polygon count so far?

poopipe
20-11-2008, 07:03 PM
:)

about 7500 on the character.

I've still got the goggles and hopefully a little jar of eyeballs to put in but there's still space to trim some from the main body so I should be alright

Poopipe: maybe if the pedastal was minus the box part?
Daddy OH: the character has been coming along well. Keep it up.
Best of luck to all in these final days:)
Looked at the calender today and saw it was the 20th - I thought it was only the 17th; I've got to start on this again - hadn't worked on it for about a week or so. Painted a bit, still needs to be rigged, trying out this idea for the pedastal...
Anybody know why the jpeg's end up so grainy? Last comp all my final pics had this problem bad.

what do you have your render settings at. The higher the resolution, the better the render. Also make sure you have the quality set to high when saving.

Martin_x
21-11-2008, 01:58 AM
Joseph Pomeisl: if you use Maya save as *.tiff, then in photoshop save as jpeg

Psycho Mantis
21-11-2008, 04:58 AM
wow, here´s some magic going on. i think i have to try a lowpoly comp - that´s just amzing what you guys do.

the freddy krueger looks real, joseph´s sexy witch was great -i´d love to see more of this, poopipe´s little witch is so sweet and scary at once and not to forget the detroit rock city kid - great concept.

looking forward to see all entries finished.

I've been kicking around a few ideas for the pedestal, one is a moonlit hallway another is a forest setting, or just outside by a street curb under a single lamp post with the "lonely trick-or-treater" look. Not sure which one to go with.

Joseph Pomeisl I like what you've got going on there with the setup for you final pose, though I'm not sure exactly whats going on, it is bedazzling none the less.
Poopipe Looking at you lil witch character now, it looks like it could be some sort of Zelda character.

Martin_x
21-11-2008, 05:19 PM
I've finished maps(color,normal,spec) and rig.

poopipe
21-11-2008, 11:53 PM
Martin_X:
I think your specular maps could do with some more work - he's looking a bit plasticy, expecially on the shirt & trousers. If you darken the values and add some colour to the spec it'll look more like cloth - breaking up the smoothness with a texture would be a big help too.

Right...

So i did some goggles and the rest of the maps for the body. I decided to do the lot so we have diffuse, spec colour, spec value, ambient colour and normals. There's still a bit of tidying to do on the diffuse but otherwise they're pretty much done I think

The mesh comes in at 7950 polys - there's not enough left for the jar and I had to do a real number on the hat to get the goggles in so there's no more poly removal happening in the body.

I've got a rig too but you'll be able to see from the picture that I've not gone into the skinning yet.

scanline render with area shadows

Martin_x
22-11-2008, 01:09 AM
Thanks poopipe I'll try to reduce specularity tomorrow. I tried some textures for pants but plain color works better.
But for now here's couple poses for winning pose. I think I'll go with 1st one.

Joseph Pomeisl
22-11-2008, 03:28 AM
Martin_x: maybe try having a fabric texture on the pants only in the bump map.
Psycho Mantis: Definately give it a go!

Rendered at 2048x2048, scanline. Set to best settings (as far as I know), then reduced in size in Photoshop. Do they look any crisper, better quality? It's rigged shoddily for now; still alot of painting to do and I'd really like to make a pedastal as well.

if you got photoshop or flash, make a texture that's faded dots of blue and then a darker blue.

I could have allot of fun with this model, I'd pose him as if he's taking a leak on a tree behind a circus, you'd see only his back of coarse. Just my mind at work.

he's a very funny looking clown too.

@ others,....and what's with the naked succubus?

poopipe
22-11-2008, 08:09 PM
why not a naked succubus?

That was the most difficult skinning session I've sat through in well over a year. Partly bad planning on my part and partly because anything with a skirt is a nightmare anyway.

I can't decide which angle to go with for the single pose sheet - these two are feeling good but I'm not sure yet. I'll hopefully get to do a bunch of em for the beauty sheet.

I'll probably ditch the pot thing from the pedestal and replace it with a simple bit of wood/stone.

just some material fiddling and the renders to go then :)

Joseph Pomeisl
22-11-2008, 10:03 PM
why not a naked succubus?

...exactly.
There are several reasons, just look through the old pages and they should be obvious.

Got a pedastal done:) The opacity map for the hair is probably the biggest thing left to be done.
Also, for everyone who doesn't know, CTRL-X in max gets expert mode - makes for larger screen grabs.
Noticed that it's comp 26, not 27 - sorry about that.
