Speed Painting Challenge no. 82
Topic: Scary
Idea: What’s your worst nightmare, what gives you the creeps, makes your skin craw, bugs you out, keeps you up at night. Draw that.
Deadline: 11:59 pm (GMT) Sunday November 2nd (use the time zone thread to make sure your done in time)
Prizes: (must be at least 6 entries)
Winner gets to choose one of the following options:
- 6-month subscription to the 2DCreative magazine
- 6-month subscription to the 3DCreative magazine
Rules:
-Any medium is allowed, as long as it can be put into digital form - scanned, photographed, etc.
- Since it's a speed painting, it should be finished in the smallest amount of time possible, but if you paint a whole day, you won't get disqualified . But for example, 4 days is too much
- IF YOU PAINT MULTIPLE ENTRIES, YOU NEED TO STATE BEFORE THE DEADLINE WHICH ONE YOU LIKE THE BEST. IF NOT – I’LL DO IT FOR YOU
- References can be used - 3D or photograph, BUT you can't paint over them. It has to be your own painting.
- Custom brushes can be used, but to some extent - they can't be pre-made parts of the future painting, like a whole tree, brush, cloud, an explosion, lighting... you get the point. They can be - a couple of leaves, a couple of grass blades

hi everybody, im done. I made the concept art in 4 hours. I wanted to create a dreamworld and make it scary bud i don't like gore, so i tried to work with color and feeling. And to me this would freak me out when im dreaming..
Hope its something you like, i made 2 different versions, so you can choose for yourself which version is better.

I agree, I like that in the first one the corpses look like they are suspended from strings that ascend all the way into the sky. Very good concept though! Gives of a very eerie vibe..

Yes, its all painted in photoshop with a custom brush that acts like a palet knife, also traditional brushes are used and offcourse all of this is made by using a wacom tablet.
I Have a intuos 3 tablet with touch strips. I have assigment my brush size to this touch strip, so when i stroke up the brush becomes bigger and when i stroke down the brush becomes smaller, by using this method i can paint very fast. Still its hard to hit the concept the right way.
I used a 2-way perspective on this concept and for the people hanging i watched references on google. Its pretty disturbing to see real people hanging on ropes.......
hope this answered your question.

You should look at some perspective tutorials when working on concept art. Its a good idea to test this out when drawing with a pencil first. Make thumbnail sketches to see if your perspective view works. You can see rather quickly if its a good view or not...
Also try to sketch light and shadows. So try to draw a cube or sphere but make it look 3d, like its touchable.
Check this small study sketch of mine to see what i mean.

Knowledge is a key factor in sketching. Use real reference where necessary. Alot of art looks like its made by the hands of a genius mind, and perhaps it is, but when unfolded the artist uses alot of real references to redraw his main idea. This is a normal process and a learning process.
Here is a concept of mine which has been redrawn with use of many real reference material pieces.

Research is 75% of your drawing.
Hope this helps a bit

nice revise on that 3rd one tjerkotten. I think I will also compete in this challenge and I am trying to get a friend to compete as well. I think one of the most horrifying things I can think of would finding smoke rising up from my computer and a cracked monitor. But I think I will go with something different. Probably won't get to paint it till Sunday or Monday :(

Yeah sure did^^.
Like your new concept, but i don't get why there is a huge blast in the middle?.
Idea: you could do the same pic but without the explosion, but the guy is holding a torch (not torchlight) which illuminates the spider partially and overall dampens the light^^.
And maybe the same idea but with a flashlight^^. that would make sharper light edges and giv a different look ^^
PS: as you can see i like coming up with ideas even if I don't do that many things myself^^

( The concept is sort of a dream, i usually dream every night and dreams come and go in flashes. In the explosion is more a portal or the feeling that people have when they experience a near death experience. They always feel like its something good, or like they are going to heaven. Thats why i used an old man with a cane that is walking to the light, not knowing that its evil lurking behind it. So its more like a dream state, and in that dreamstate nothing is really clear and all can be different. Thats what i like about concepts, they make you wonder. )
Idea: you could do the same pic but without the explosion, but the guy is holding a torch (not torchlight) which illuminates the spider partially and overall dampens the light^^.
( The guy or human in the concept isn't aware of the spider lurking on the other upper side of the light. )
And maybe the same idea but with a flashlight^^. that would make sharper light edges and giv a different look ^^
PS: as you can see i like coming up with ideas even if I don't do that many things myself
( The fact that you see things different than the creator of the concept is very good because that happens to every creative mind. There is always a perfect version for yourself, rather than the perfect version of the creator. Its very good to create and re create. Thanks for you comment )

I think yours is the best so far, the painting techniq isn't the best, but the dark emotion that is in the piece is very good.

Thanks Jerkotten! I can definitely do better on painting technique, I wanted to be quick on this one. I think it is kind of a scary image though. You got a lone young girl peering behind a doorway once the motion light turns on, only to see your worst fears coming true.
I've liked the other entries, but they just arent scary to me, great painting skills regardless. I would vote on yours and Darchands.

Posting this here even though it is to concern the final submission thread. This also regards what tjerkotten said based on Qbanpensil entry. Didn't take but 2 seconds on google image search to find this

While Qbanpensil entry is by far scary and show some extremely good painting skill it would nice to see an original piece.

needs more splat. I'm guessing she fell from the building, but because there isn't any sign of a fall, I guess she just got tired of walking and decide that was the best place to take a nap.

I found out about this forum today and I'm glad I spotted this challenge this evening.
Just in time to work out one of my ideas (just under three hours).
Hope you like it ...

Wildbrew: she must have been dead for a few weeks, before she fell, if there is no blood. But your right, it not my nightmare, dead girls don't scare me, cavity searches scare me.
